Asia Cup Updates! Sangakkara's ton helps Sri Lanka edge India

Timeline  Refresh

21:25

Sri Lanka: 265-8 (49.2 overs)
India: 264-9 (50 overs)

Kumar to bowl the 46th over. It's an expensive over, 11 runs coming off it.

Shami to bowl the 47th over. Sanga welcomes him with a six over midwicket even as 10 runs come off the over.

The 48th over, by Kumar, adds another 11 runs to the Lankan total, Sanga hitting successive boundaries.

A misfiled by Dhawan helps Sanga to a boundary, thereby reaching his 18th ODI hundred. He is out caught on the next ball.

They check for a no ball but he is given. Shami gets a third (3-81).

An edge by Mendis, off Shami's last ball, goes to the fence. Scores are level.

And Dhawan drops a sitter at mid-off. Perera's (on 10) survives and he gets the required single of the next ball.

Sri Lanka win by two wickets.
20:55

Sri Lanka: 221-7 (45 overs)
India: 264-9 (50 overs)

A boundary by Sangakkara, off Rohit, helps Sri Lanka reach the 200-run mark in the 41st over.

Jadeja is brought back to bowl in the 44th over, and he strikes first ball having De Silva (9) out leg before.

Jadeja ends his spell with excellent figures (10-1-30-3). Ditto for Ashwin (10-0-41-2).

Sri Lanka requires 45 runs off the last five overs.
20:30

Sri Lanka: 191-4 (40 overs)
India: 264-9 (50 overs)

It's the 36th over, the batting powerplay. Jadeja continues. He bowls a good first over, giving away just three runs.

Mohammed Shami to bowl the second over. He strikes with his second ball, trapping Mathews (6) plumb in front.

Sachithra Senanayeke joins his captain at the crease with his team in a spot of bother. He hits three boundaries off Shami before hitting the same bowler straight to Rohit at midwicket.

A boundary off Jadeja helps Sangakkara reach his 85th ODI fifty, his 18th against India.
19:55

Sri Lanka: 150-4 (32 overs)
India: 264-9 (50 overs)

It's Sangakkara's (30) turn to get a reprieve now, Karthik fumbles with a stumping from a Jadeja delivery.

Kohli is looking like a clueless captain at the moment and his bowlers aren't exactly helping him.

But just as we say this, Jadeja strikes, having Mahela Jayawardene (9) caught by Rohit at extra cover. In the next ball, Jadeja cleans up Dinesh Chandimal.

In comes captain Angelo Mathews. He takes a couple of the hat-trick ball to help Sri Lanka reach the 150-run mark.
19:35

Sri Lanka: 138-2 (28 overs)
India: 264-9 (50 overs)

Perera completes a well deserved fifty, his third in ODIs.

He helps his captain add 54 runs for the second wicket before Ashwin strikes for a second time, having him caught behind. It is Ashwin 100th international wicket.

Perera's 81-ball 64 was inclusive of four boundaries and a couple of sixes.

Mahela Jayawardene is the new batsman.
18:56

Sri Lanka: 81-1 (18 overs)
India: 264-9 (50 overs)

Ashwin, in his fifth over, finally provides India with the much needed breakthrough, having Thirimanne (38) out leg before.

Thirimanne's 55-ball knock was inclusive of four boundaries and a six and he helped Perera add 80 runs for the opening wicket to help his team lay a solid foundation.

Kumar Sangakkara is the new batsman.
18:51

Sri Lanka: 80-0 (17 overs)
India: 264-9 (50 overs)

Ashiwn comes back into the attack in the 12th over and Stuart Binny replaces Kumar (6-1-14-0) in the next. The duo slow down the pace of the Sri Lankan innings considerably. But the breakthrough remains elusive.

Perera (on 39) gets another reprieve as Jadeja puts him down off Binny. It was a difficult chance but Jadeja, running in from deep midwicket, had covered the ground and should have taken it.
18:24

Sri Lanka: 51-0 (10 overs)
India: 264-9 (50 overs)

A mix up between Dhawan and Rahane helps Kusal (on seven) survive, Shami being the unfortunate bowler.

Shami is unlucky again as Jadeja puts down Thirimanne (on five) at cover. The batsman adds to the pain with two successive boundaries.

R Ashwin is introduced into the attack in the eighth over, replacing Shami (3-0-22-0). Thirimanne smashes the second ball over long-off for a maximum as nine come off the over.

Shami is brought back immediately. Perera welcomes him with a huge six. A single two balls later brings up the fifty of the Sri Lankan innings.
17:56

Sri Lanka: 13-0 (3 overs)
India: 264-9 (50 overs)

Welcome back to the second innings. Bhuvneshwar Kumar to start the proceedings for India.

Kusal Perera and Lahiru Thirimanne have walked in to open the batting for Sri Lanka. Just one run off the first over.

It's Mohammed Shami bowling the second over. Eight runs come off the over with Perera getting a boundary, with a cheeky lemon cut.

Thirimanne gets his first boundary in Kumar's second over, a crackling drive through cover.
17:04

India: 264-9 (50 overs)

R Ashwin is the new batsman in. He settles down well with Jadeja, the duo scoring at a good pace, at more than a run-a-ball.

However, just when things are looking up for India, Malinga gets past Ashwin's (18) defenses. Ashwin and Jadeja add 30 runs (off 27 balls) for the eighth wicket.

Mendis has Bhuvneshwar Kumar (0) stunped for what is his fourth wicket (4-60).

In comes Shami and he gets into the act straightaway, smashing Mendis for a huge six. Two balls later he repeats the feat, in the same midwicket region.

Just five runs off Malinga's last over as India total 264 for nine.
16:36

India: 224-7 (45 overs)

Mendis' double-wicket over has brought Sri Lanka right back into the game.

Ravindra Jadeja is the new batsman at the crease. He starts off with a big six off De Silva. The bowler albeit responds well, having Rayudu (18) caught by Kushal Perera at long-off.

The wicket is the only succour for De Silva, in what has otherwise been an expensive spell (10-0-51-1).

Stuart Binny is the new batsman in.  He survives just four balls and doesn't bother the scorers, becoming Senanayeke's third victim. It's his career best figures.
16:18

India: 203-5 (41 overs)

The second drinks break rejuvenates Sri Lanka, and they strike immediately after. Rahane (22) mishits a Senanayeke delivery and is caught by Lahiru Thirimanne at backward point.

Ambati Rayudu is the new batsman in.

Mendis then ensures double celebration, getting through Dhawan's (94) defences. Dhawan's 114-ball knock was inclusive of seven hits to the fence and one over it.

Three balls later, Mendis has Dinesh Karthik (4) caught by De Silva at mid-off.
15:46

India: 166-2 (34 overs)

Ajinkya Rahane replaces his captain at the crease. Malinga is brought back into the attack in the 30th over, replacing Senanayeke (6-0-28-1). He gives away just four runs in his comeback over.

It's a twin bowling change with De Silva replacing Mendis (6-0-34-1) in the next. India reach the 150-run mark in the over.

Rahane is combining well with Dhawan. After a cautious start, he helps himself to a first boundary, over sqaure-leg off De Silva. The latter is closing in on yet another hundred.

India take the batting powerplay in the 34th over. Senanyeke gives away four runs in the first over.
15:19

India: 132-2 (27 overs)

Sri Lanka desperately need a wicket now.

Perera is back in the attack, replacing Mendis (4-0-22-0) in the 24th over. The bowler's sixth over is an expensive one, 13 runs coming off it, with Dhawan first hitting a boundary and then clearing the long-on fence.

Kohli also helps himself to a six off De Silva. The bowler is taken off and replaced by Mendis in the next over.

The move works as Mendis does Kohli (48) in with a carrom ball. Super dismissal this.

Kohli's 51-ball innings was inclusive of four boundaries and a six and he helped Dhawan add 97 runs for the second wicket.

15:00

India: 100-1 (23 overs)

Mendis hasn't started well. Having gone for seven in his first, he goes for eight in his second, Dhawan getting an exquisite boundary past the deep backward square leg.

A single by Kohli, off Mendis, helps attain the 50-run partnership for the second wicket, in the 20th over.

A single off De Silva helps Dhawan complete his sixth ODI fifty, his second against Sri Lanka. India has never lost a match where Dhawan has scored more than 50.

India also reach the 100-run mark in that over.
14:41

India: 70-1 (16.2 overs)

Senanayeke's fifth over costs Sri Lanka 11 runs, both the batsmen helping themselves to boundaries, and India getting past the 50-run mark.

Ajantha Mendis is introduced into the attack in the 16th over, replacing Senanayeke (5-0-27-1).

There's another bowling change, Chaturanga de Silva replacing Perera (3.4-0-12-0) in the 17th over. Kohli survives a big appeal for stumping in the second ball.
14:11

India: 37-1 (10 overs)

Mathews replaces Malinga (3-1-14-0) at the other end but is forced to go off the field two balls into ninth over. Thisara Perera completes the over.

Senanayeke makes the breakthrough in the 10th over, getting Rohit (13) out leg before. A brave decision from umpire Nigel Llong. The batsman can't believe it.

Captain Virat Kohli walks out to bat. He has been in imperious form.  He begins with a boundary.
13:59

India: 26-0 (7 overs)

Malinga's third over, the fifth of the Indian innings, is an expensive one, 11 runs coming off it with Dhawan finding the fence in successive balls.

With the seamers failing to make the breakthrough, Mathews is forced to replace himself with Sachithra Senanayeke, in the sixth over. Rohit gets his first boundary in the bower's fifth ball.
13:40

India: 2-0 (3 overs)

Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan walk out to bat. Lasith Malinga to start the proceedings for Sri Lanka.

Just one run off the first over, by Rohit.

Angelo Mathews to bowl the second over. It's a maiden from him first up.
