Anderson and Broad bowling in tandem with the second new ball as India's two batsmen are content to play it safe and reach close of play without any further damage.

Stokes has done a lot of bowling today and he comes back for another spell with the new ball and once again ahead of Plunkett.

Plunkett to bowl the final over of the day. Dhoni steers the second ball to thirdman for a single to bring up his half-century from 64 balls.

At stumps on the opening day, India are 259 for four in 90 overs.

Vijay has batted beautifully to bat through the day and finish unbeaten on 122 from 294 balls, hitting 20 fours and a six in the process. Dhoni has batted positively to hit 50 from 64 balls as the duo put on 81 runs for the fifth wicket to give India slight edge on the opening day.

Strangely, England decide not to take the new ball as another part-timer spinner Joe Root comes into the attack.

Dhoni helps himself to a freebie as a full toss is driven down the ground past mid-off for a four followed by a single to take his score to 40.

Captain Alastair Cook realises his mistake and Anderson is called upon immediately for the next over to bowl with the second new ball.

Vijay again resorts to leaving majority of the deliveries outside the off-stump especially against the new ball as Anderson starts with a maiden and Broad concedes just a single in the next over.

Dhoni then cuts Anderson over point and collects two runs in the process as India reach 252 for four in 84 overs.

Off-spinner Ali comes back. Dhoni sweeps the second ball for two runs and then drives the fifth ball for another couple and picks another two runs from the last ball to get six runs from the over.

India have not taken Ali to the cleaners but have ensured that they have scored at a good rate against the part-timer.

Vijay gives Ali the charge in his next over and lofts him over the cover region for the first six of the match. It also brings up the 50-run partnership for the fifth wicket from 102 balls as India continue to progress at a good rate in the post tea session to reach 228 for four in 77 overs.

In Ali's next over, Vijay again gives him the charge but this time he whips him through midwicket for a boundary.

Vijay lifting the tempo with some lovely boundaries as he punches Plunkett through the off-side to take his score to 121 to take India to 243 for four in 80 overs.

The thirdman region has proved to be a profitable area for India on the opening day with a lot of runs coming through the region. Dhoni gets a thick outside edge which flies through the vacant thirdman region for another boundary to take his score to 23.

Vijay is ensuring that he doesn't lose his focus after getting to the century as he watchfully plays out a maiden over from Anderson.

India have scored 34 runs for one wicket in 15 overs after the tea break to reach 211 for four in 74 overs.

Vijay completes his century from 214 balls with a single on the leg side off Anderson in the 68th over. And Dhoni slams the next ball through the off-side for his first boundary of the innings.

Dhoni then hits a full delivery from Anderson through the covers for a four before he steers the fifth ball behind point for the same result.

With around an hour's play left in the day, India have reached 205 for four in 72 overs with Vijay on 102 and Dhoni on 18.

Vijay a run away from his century as he drives a full delivery from Broad straight down the ground for a boundary which takes his score to 99.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni has tried to adopt a positive approach and is going hard after the deliveries but is yet to score from seven balls.

He finally finds the gap as he punches Plunkett past point for three runs to bring Vijay back on strike.

Plunkett bowls from round the wicket and aims short deliveries at Vijay's body, who sways out of the way and continues be a run away from his century at the end of the over.

England strike in the very first over of the post tea session. Rahane goes for the pull shot as Plunkett drops it short but gets it off the bottom and is caught on the off-side after scoring 32.

TEA - DAY 1

Part-time spin of Ali is proving to be a big relief for India with some easy runs on offer. Rahane plays a lovely drive through the covers only to be denied a boundary by a good effort on the ropes by Broad to keep it down to three.

After a maiden over from Plunkett, Ali comes on to bowl the final over of the session.

Rahane again goes back and smashes a short ball through the covers and again he gets only three as Stokes makes a diving stop on the ropes.

At tea on Day 1, India are 177 for three in 59 overs.

Vijay is looking set for his century as he is unbeaten on 92 from 176 balls, having hit 17 fours, while Rahane has made 32 from 77 balls. The duo have been involved in an unbroken stand of 70 from 26.1 overs for the fourth wicket to steady India after a couple of quick wickets.

Vijay plays the cover drive to perfection as he takes full toll of some width from Plunkett. Two balls later he rocks back and steers a slightly short delivery through the point region for the second four of the over to take his score to 80, with the help of 15 fours.

Time for some spin as England bring back Moeen Ali for his first spell of the post lunch session. The first ball is short and Rahane cuts it behind point for three runs and sweeps the last ball powerfully for a four through square leg as India look to lift the scoring rate in the last few overs.

Vijay continues to find the boundaries. This time he steers Stokes through thirdman for a four before he gets an edge for the same result three balls later.

India have scored 28 runs from the last five overs to reach 166 for three in 55 overs.

Plunkett comes in to replace Stokes, who bowled a tight spell after lunch. Vijay drives a wide delivery through the point region for a four before he clips the next through midwicket for two runs.

Change of ends for Stoke, who continues to toil from one end with his main aim being to build the pressure by drying up the runs from his end.

After 50 overs, India are 158 for three with Vijay on 72 from 145 balls and Rahane on 14 from 54 balls with the duo putting on 31 runs so far for the fourth wicket.

Stokes continues to bowl maiden overs from one end. Rahane breaks the shackles as he flicks a full delivery from Broad square on the leg side for a four.

At the drinks break, India are 124 for three in 44 overs with 18 runs coming from 14 overs in the first hour of the post lunch session.

The two quick wickets after the lunch break has seen Vijay adopt a cautious approach to reach 60 from 127 balls,  while Rahane has made 12 from 36 balls.

Rahane gets off the mark in some style as he drives a full delivery from Broad straight down the ground for a boundary.

Rahane showing good application and is content to play a lot of dot balls and wait for the right delivery to score runs. An over-pitched delivery is driven through the covers for a boundary by Rahane as India reach 120 for three in 40 overs.

Stokes looking to hold one end up and dry up the runs. India have hit a roadblock after the lunch break, scoring 14 runs from 12 overs of the second session to reach 120 for three in 42 overs.

Vijay is batting on 60 from 121 balls, hitting 12 fours in total and Rahane is on eight from 30 balls.
18:44   Kohli fails with the bat, India slip after a good start

Kohli has failed with the bat as he is caught in the slips off Broad after scoring just one as India slip to 107 for three, losing two wickets for one run in the space of nine balls.

Kohli opens the face of the bat as he looks to steer it but ends up edging it straight to Bell at second slip.

The pitch has suddenly come to life as Anderson bowls a beauty to Vijay, who is beaten all ends up outside the off-stump.

The ball is moving much more than in the morning session and England's bowlers seem a lot more sharper.

Ajinkya Rahane is the last specialist batsman in the line-up with Dhoni and the tailenders to follow.

Broad induces another edge, this time from Rahane, who again plays away from his body trying to play the drive but the ball falls just short of the fielder at second slip.

Vijay brings some cheer back to the Indian fans as he flicks a full delivery from middle stump through midwicket for a cracking boundary.
18:25   Pujara out for 38, India lose 2nd wicket

The players walk back on to the field for the resumption of play in the post-lunch session.

Broad to resume proceedings in the second session with England desperate for a few quick wickets to check India's good progress in the morning session when they made 106 for one in 30 overs with Vijay hitting a half-century.

Vijay is beaten outside the off-stump in that over as the ball shapes in slightly but he manages to easily negotiate the rest of the over.

Anderson provides the breakthrough immediately after the lunch break with the crucial wicket of Pujara. The slower delivery foxes Pujara, who is too early into the push and ends up lobbing it on the leg side where Bell takes a stunning catch diving full length to his right.

An opportunity wasted by Pujara as he falls for 38, having hit seven fours in 69 balls, after putting on 73 runs for the second wicket with Vijay.

New batsman Virat Kohli is off the mark with a quick single on the off-side.

LUNCH - DAY 1

Vijay hits Stokes for back to back boundaries through the off-side to bring up his half-century from 68 balls as India continue to make good progress in the first session.

Pujara comes down the track to Ali and hits him on the leg side for a one. Vijay then gets a thick outside edge which goes fine on the off-side for two runs as India reach 94 for one in 25 overs.

Pujara is getting very busy as he flicks Plunkett through the leg side for a couple. He then steers the next ball past the slip cordon for a couple for a boundary to bring up India's 100.

Ali is taken off after just two overs in his first spell and he makes way for Broad with the lunch time round the corner.

Vijay realises the situation and is happy to play out the over with caution.

Pujara decides not to offer a stroke to a short ball and is hit on the body by a short ball from Plunkett as both the batsmen look to have pulled down shutters and are playing for lunch.

Despite using so many overs of pace England have maintained an excellent over rate. Plunkett comes on to bowl the 30th over of the morning session which could also be the final one before the lunch break.

At lunch on Day 1, India sitting pretty on 106 for one with Vijay on 55 from 89 balls and Pujara on 38 from 67 balls. The two batsmen have added 73 runs from 138 balls for the second wicket to put India on top in the morning session.

Pujara seems to have got a measure of the pitch, which looks absolutely flat now. The right-hander comes forward and drives it confidently through the covers for a cracking boundary to take his score to 22.

India introduce spin in the form of part-timer off-spinner Moeen Ali. He starts from round the wicket to Pujara, who is happy to use his feet but can't find the gap. The last ball is a high full toss which Pujara lofts over midwicket for a four as it bounces just inside the ropes to raise the 50-run stand for the second wicket from 96 balls.

Pujara dabs the second ball to midwicket for a single before Vijay defends the rest of the over.

Pujara smashes a short wide delivery from Stokes behind square on the off-side for his third boundary.

Vijay has a close shave as a yorker nearly rolls back on to the stumps but Vijay is able to stop it with his bat.

India are well placed on 71 for one in 20 overs with Vijay on 41 from 57 balls and Pujara on 17 from 39 balls.

Former England captain Alec Stewart is unhappy with the Trend Bridge pitch, which has hardly offered any help to the English pace bowlers in the first hour. "Not sure England camp will be happy with the lack of live green grass on the pitch. No home advantage at all," he writes on Twitter.

Vijay getting better with every passing over. This time he punches a full delivery from Stokes straight down the ground past mid-on for a delightful boundary before he takes a single from the next ball.

Vijay hits another lovely straight boundary off Plunkett in the next over before he takes a single on the leg side to take his score to 40.

Liam Plunkett comes into the attack in place of Anderson, who bowled a long first spell of one for 40 in seven overs.

Pujara, having learnt from his mistake against Anderson, play with caution against Plunkett to play out a maiden over.

India have progressed to 53 for one in 15 overs. Vijay edged a few through the slips before playing confidently to reach 30 from 37 balls, while Pujara has made 10 from 29 balls.
16:29   Dhawan falls early but India off to a good start

Anderson will continue as he comes on to bowl his sixth over. Vijay continues to find the boundaries against the pacer as he hits one through point where the fielder gets a hand to it but fails to stop as it rolls away for a four.

England make their first bowling change of the innings as Ben Stokes comes in to replace Broad, who bowled a tidy first spell of nine runs in five overs.

Stokes concedes just a single in his first over as Pujara turns it to fine leg for one.

Pujara plays a risky steer shot as it goes uppishly over the slip cordon for a boundary to get four runs from Anderson's seventh over.

India's former No. 3 Rahul Dravid might have been very unhappy with that shot but Pujara survives that judgement of error.

India are 51 for one in 13 overs.

New batsman Cheteshwar Pujara defends four balls in a row from Broad, who has given just five runs in four overs.

Anderson beats Vijay with one that moves away before the right-hander steers one past point for a four three balls later to take his score to 25.

Pujara is beaten by the inswinger from Broad which hits him on the thigh pad. The right-hander was struck on the crease as he looked to come forward to defend. However, he ends the over in some style crashing a full delivery through midwicket for a four to get his first runs in England.

Despite the wicket of Dhawan, India are off to a good start as they reach 42 for one in 10 overs with Vijay on 25 from 26 balls.

Vijay finally gets his first single as he taps Anderson on the off-side with soft hands. Dhawan waits for one on the pads which he clips square for one.

However, Anderson strikes the first blow for England with the wicket of Dhawan, who is caught behind for 12.

Anderson, bowling from round the wicket, got the ball to leave Dhawan. The left-hander pushed at it half-heartedly and ended up getting an edge which was pouched by Prior diving to his left as India are reduced to 33 for one in seven overs.

Broad bowls a good tight over to Dhawan, who is content to play it safe for the first maiden over of the innings. Broad has given just one run in two overs, while Anderson has given away 17 in his two overs.

Anderson continues to leak runs. This time Vijay steers a short delivery outside the off-stump behind the point region for a boundary. He edges the last ball past the slip region for the second four of the over as India race to 26 for no loss in five overs. Vijay has hit 20 from 17 balls, with the help of five fours, while Dhawan has made six from 13 balls.

Vijay gets India off the mark with three boundaries in a row. The first two are edged past the slip cordon as the right-hander defends it with soft hands before he stylishly flicks a full delivery through midwicket for the same result.

15:10   India elect to bat in first Test, Binny makes debut
India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni has won the toss and elected to bat against England in the first Test match.

Stuart Binny, son of former India all-rounder Roger Binny, makes his Test debut.

Ajinkya Rahane is preferred ahead of his Mumbai team mate Rohit Sharma, while Ravindra Jadeja gets the nod as the lone spinner.

India have gone in with five bowlers including Mohammed Shami, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Ishant Sharma, Jadeja and all-rounder Binny.

England have included Ben Stokes in place of Chris Jordan while Matt Prior is declared fit to play the match.

14:51   Binny to make debut in Nottingham Test
Welcome to the coverage of the first Test match between India and England at Trent Bridge, in Nottingham, on Wednesday.

Stuart Binny will make his Test debut in the first match. He received his Test cap from India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni and was congratulated by all his team mates.

India will look to make a good start in the five-match series in Nottingham and look to bounce back after suffering a humiliating 0-4 whitewash from their last tour in 2011. They will also seek to improve their overseas record having lost their last two series in South Africa and New Zealand.

Hosts England also have a few problems of their own. England will aim to avoid a third consecutive series defeat and ease the pressure on captain Alastair Cook, who has also struggled for runs recently.
