STUMPS - DAY 2

Eng 43-1 (17 ovs) vs India 457 | Scorecard

- England lose captain Cook early for 5, reach 43-1 at stumps
- India post 457 courtesy of fifties from Bhuvneshwar and Shami
- Opener Vijay top scored with 146, while Dhoni made 82

Ballance is quick to work Ishant off his pads for a couple on the leg side. Ishant once again finds the edge with another beauty but yet again the edge falls short of the slips. The lanky pacer is making things exciting on the odd occasion on a lifeless wicket.

Debutant Stuart Binny is called into the attack for his first bowl in Test cricket. The first ball is on the mark which right-hander Robson defends before he takes one from the third ball and Ballance easily plays out the rest of the over.

Ishant to bowl the final over of the day. Robson takes a single from the second ball and Ballance flicks the fourth on the leg side for two runs. There is a loud appeal for caught behind off the final delivery of the day as Ballance shuffled across his stumps but umpire Dharmasena turns it down and calls it stumps for the day.

At stumps on Day 2, England are 43 for one in 17 overs, still trailing India by 414 runs with nine more sessions left in the match on a pitch which has gone completely dead as far as the bowlers are concerned.

Robson looked solid to score 20 not out from 48 balls, while Ballance had a few edges falling short of the slips for 15 from 46 balls.

Eng 37-1 (14 ovs) vs India 457 | Scorecard

India introduce spin early in the form of Ravindra Jadeja, who comes in place of Shami after an excellent first spell of one for 15 in five overs with the new ball.

Ballance sweeps the fourth ball for one before Robson turns the next down the leg side for a couple to get three runs from the over.

Ballance gets an edge off Ishant in the next over but the fails to carry to the fielder at first slip. However, he drives the next ball off the middle of the bat through the covers for his first boundary.

Jadeja rushes through his second over, bowling flat and quick which is easily defended by Robson.

22:32   Robson, Ballance steady England after early wicket
Eng 28-1 (10 ovs) vs India 457 | Scorecard

A poor effort in the field from Bhuvneshwar gifts Robson his second boundary as he flicks Shami square on the leg side, in the eighth over.

With England on 24 for one in eight overs, India make their first bowling as they bring in Ishant Sharma to replace Bhuvneshwar, who bowled four overs for 12 runs.

A steady start from Ishant, but he oversteps in his first over, giving away a no-ball, one bad habit which has troubled him a lot in recent years.

Left-hander Gary Ballance clips Shami to the fine leg region for a couple to take England to 28 for one in 10 overs.
22:03   Cook fails again as England lose early wicket
Eng: 9-1 (4 ovs) vs India: 457 | Scorecard

The struggling Alastair Cook walks out to open the batting with Sam Robson, while Bhuvneshwar Kumar will bowl the first over for India.

Cook gets off the mark with a single from the first ball before Robson plays out the rest of the over.

In the next over, Cook flicks Shami square on the leg side for the first boundary of England's innings. Robson gets off the mark with a four as he slams Kumar through point as England reach nine for no loss in three overs.

Shami makes the early breakthrough for India with the wicket of Cook, who shuffles across but ends up flicking it back on to the leg stump to bowl him for five.

India 1st inns: 457-all out (157 ovs) vs Eng | Scorecard

Moeen Ali comes in to bowl with third new ball available after the completion of this over.

Bhuvneshwar decides to target the part-timer as he comes down the track and lofts it back over the bowler's head for a four. He tries to repeat the shot but offers a simple catch to Root at mid-on as India are bowled out for 457 in their first innings.

Bhuvneshwar is dismissed after a superb innings of 58 from 149 balls, having stayed at the wicket for 161 minutes to swell India's total.

Last man Mohammed Shami also hung in bravely, hitting a few shots in the process to finish unbeaten on 51 from 81 balls.

The duo added 111 runs from 38.1 overs for the last wicket to completely turn the Indian innings on it's head after they were reduced to 346 for nine at one stage.

21:15   Shami, Kumar guide India to safety; England frustrated
India 1st inns: 439-9 (156 ovs) vs Eng | Scorecard

The action resumes in the final session of the day. Plunkett starts from round the wicket and immediately targets Shami on the body with short balls but it hardly rises as the right-hander tries to sway out of the way.

He then tries to swat one over the off-side but misses and then awkwardly blocks the fourth ball which drops on the pitch. Shami then makes a bit of room and slaps it through the covers for a couple of runs.

Anderson from the other end as Kumar drives the fifth ball to sweeper cover for one. Shami lofts the last ball over the off-side and gets one to the same fielder.

Two more runs from the next Plunkett over as India reach 439 for nine in 156 overs.

TEA - DAY 2

India 1st inns: 424-9 (150 ovs) vs Eng | Scorecard

One of the most extra-ordinary sessions of Test cricket.

India imploded in the post lunch session, losing five wickets for 42 runs including captain Dhoni after a good innings of 82 from 152 balls.

But the last wicket pairing of Shami and Kumar have scripted an amazing turnaround with the bat to leave England totally frustrated.

Shami (39 from 62 balls) and Kumar (46 from 120  balls) have so far added 87 runs from 181 balls for the final wicket, having stayed at the wicket for two hours and two minutes so far.

It is advantage India at the moment, having posted a handy first innings total on a pitch which is getting slower and lower.

Kumar's technique is encouraging and his footwork is getting better with every passing over. He is slowly inching towards a half-century and Shami is catching up soon. Shami plays another cute flick off Broad to take his score to 37, having hit six fours in the process.

Plunkett from round the wicket bowls a short ball slanting across Shami who plays and misses as England's players make a belated appeal but the umpire is unmoved.

The session is extended by half an hour but England are still unable to get the final wicket as tea is finally taken with India looking good on 433 for nine in 153 overs.

The scoreboard continues to tick along much to the delight of the Indian dressing room.

Both Shami and Kumar have shown great concentration and their shot selection except for a few times has been top class and could serve as a great example for their illustrious top order colleagues.

India have taken their score to 424 for nine in 150 overs, with 27 runs coming from the last 10 overs.
20:12   Last pair Shami, Kumar take India past 400

Kumar edges Stokes which flies past the slip fielder for a boundary to bring up the 400-run mark for India, in the 143rd over of the innings.

The runs are coming at a fair pace now with the two batsmen also managing to rotate the strike with ones and twos.

After 145 overs, India are 412 for nine with Kumar on 37 from 86 balls and Shami on 27 from 48 balls with the duo having put on 66 runs for the final wicket and still going strong.

Kumar continues to take majority of the strike as he steers Anderson to thirdman for one from the fifth ball of the over. Shami is growing in confidence as he flicks the last ball from Anderson behind square on the leg side for a delightful boundary.

Ali continues and Kumar helps himself t another boundary, lofting a full delivery over the off-side. He repeats the shot in the next over, this time he gets it straighter for another four to raise the 50-run stand for the 10th wicket, from 103 balls.

India 1st inns: 374-9 (135 ovs) vs Eng | Scorecard

India's last pair -- Mohammed Shami and Bhuvneshwar Kumar -- are really frustrating the England bowlers out in the middle.

They are content to bide their time out in the middle before Shami clobbers one from Anderson over midwicket for his first boundary of the innings.

Kumar has scored 16 from 64 balls, while Shami has made 10 from 20 balls with the duo batting for 12.1 overs so far to take India to 374 for nine in 135 overs.

Kumar has tried to keep majority of the strike with singles from the fifth or the last ball in the last three overs.

But he is unable do the same off Broad as Mohammed Shami comes on strike against Plunkett for the 128th over.
18:56   India collapse after lunch, England on top
India 1st inns: 346-9 (123 ovs) vs Eng | Scorecard

The wickets continue to tumble for India after lunch. This time, Binny goes after a wide delivery from Stokes but ends up hitting it straight into the hands of Joe Root at point to fall for one.

From 342 for five at lunch, India have collapsed to 345 for eight in the space of 3.4 overs to hand the initiative back to England.

And the procession continues as Ishant Sharma offers no stroke to the incoming delivery from Broad and is bowled for one.
18:31   Dhoni out for 82 as India stumble after lunch
India 1st inns: 345-7 (121.1 ovs) vs Eng | Scorecard

Interestingly, Stuart Broad is bowling to Stuart Binny, and both of them have had their fathers playing Test cricket for their respective countries.

And in the very next over, India suffer another big blow as captain Dhoni is dismissed run out. He set off for a quick single to mid-off but was caught short by a direct hit from Anderson.

Dhoni played a good innings of 82 from 152 balls but his dismissal has left India in a spot of bother and a total of 400 looks a bit difficult now.

18:24   Jadeja falls for 25, India lose sixth wicket
India 1st inns: 345-6 (120 ovs) vs Eng | Scorecard

Broad to resume proceedings after the lunch break as Dhoni and Jadeja pick a single each in that over.

LUNCH - DAY 2

India 1st inns: 342-5 (118 ovs) vs Eng | Scorecard

It was a session that belonged to India as they scored 83 runs in  28 overs while losing the wicket of Vijay in that session.

Vijay played an excellent innings of 146 runs and showed exemplary patience and concentration to build India's total. He added 126 runs from 313 balls for the fifth wicket with Dhoni before he was dismissed courtesy of a dubious decision from umpire Bruce Oxenford.

Dhoni, who was dropped on 50 by Prior, continued to bat with patience and was unbeaten on 81 from 147 balls at the lunch interval.

Jadeja hit a quickfire 24 from 18 balls, hitting Ali for a couple sixes in one over to provide some entertainment towards the end of the morning session.

Anderson toiled hard yet again for England to register good figures of three for 95 in 30 overs on a pitch not offering any help to the bowlers. Broad was excellent with the new ball in the first spell on Day 2 as he beat the batsmen lot of times and was unlucky that Dhoni was dropped off him.
17:34
India 1st inns: 342-5 (118 ovs) vs Eng | Scorecard

Anderson having a few words with Jadeja, who is looking to attack the bowlers and score some quick runs. Jadeja angers Anderson further as he flicks him fine on the leg side for a four and the pacer's chatter continues before umpire Kumara Dharmasena has a word with him.

In Anderson's next over, there is a huge appeal for caught behind against Jadeja but the umpire is not interested.

At lunch on Day 2, India have reached 342 for five in 118 overs.
17:30   Vijay out for 146 but Dhoni continues to thwart England
India 1st inns: 327-5 (115 ovs) vs Eng | Scorecard

Left-hander Ravindra Jadeja walks in to bat at No. 7. He gets off the mark with a boundary courtesy of a freebie from Ali, a short ball which is pulled over midwicket quite confidently.

Dhoni tries to keep strike with a quick single off the last ball of Anderson's over. He taps it on the off-side and sets off but Stokes misses with the throw at the striker's end with Jadeja struggling to make the crease and India profit as the ball goes for five overthrows.

Jadeja decides to target off-spinner Ali for some special treatment. He lofts the third ball of the 115th over back over the bowler's head for a six and two balls later he crashes it over long-off for the second six of the over.

Jadeja survives a huge shout for LBW off the final delivery as he got an inside edge before it hit the pads.

India are 327 for five in 115 overs with Dhoni on 74 from 138 balls and Jadeja racing to 16 from nine balls.
17:09   Vijay out for 146, India lose 5th wicket
India 1st inns: 304-5 (112 ovs) vs Eng | Scorecard

England introduce spin for the first time on the second day with part-timer Moeen Ali coming in for another spell.

Dhoni tries to reverse sweep the first ball but fails to connect and gets two leg byes in the process. He gets an outside edge off the third ball which flies through the thirdman region for two more runs.

England's most experienced bowler Anderson finally provides the breakthrough for the hosts.

Vijay is beaten by the incoming delivery and is given out leg before wicket by umpire Bruce Oxenford even though he is struck high on the thighpads.

Vijay walks visibly dejected after a good innings of 146 from 361 balls, hitting 25 fours and a six. Replays confirm that the ball would have gone over the stumps comfortably but in the absence of DRS the Indians can't complain and after all it is their own choice.

Vijay along with Dhoni build India's total as they put on 126 runs for the fifth wicket and keep them on course for a total well in excess of 400.
16:59   Vijay, Dhoni take India past 300 on Day 2

Dhoni finally finds the gap as he takes a couple of steps and drills it through the covers beating the fielder close in for a four off Stokes.

In the next over, Vijay plays another delightful flick through midwicket off Plunkett to bring up the 300-run mark for India, in the 108th over.

India have scored 41 runs from 20 overs on Day 2 to continue their slow but steady progress in the morning session.
16:35   Vijay, Dhoni build India's score on Day 2
India 1st inns: 290-4 (105 ovs) vs Eng | Scorecard

Stokes into the attack as both Broad and Anderson are taken off after a testing spell in the morning session.

Dhoni taps the first ball on the off-side for a single and gets one courtesy of an overthrow to raise the 100-run stand for the fifth wicket.

Dhoni then takes a few steps down the track and flicks Stokes for a boundary as India look to lift the tempo after a slow start on Day 2 as eight runs come from the over.

With nothing much happening, both Stokes and Plunkett looking to bowl one side of the wicket and frustrate the Indians by drying up the runs.

England are once again keeping up with the over rate as they are bowling their 15th over of the session on the hour mark.

Vijay leans forward and plays another crisp drive square on the off-side for a four.

India have played out the first hour on Day 2 quite well without any damage. The visitors made 31 runs from 15 overs to reach 290 for four in 105 overs with Vijay on 142 from 339 balls and Dhoni on 60 from 109 balls.

Dhoni was dropped on 50 by Prior off Broad in the third over of the day and despite a few plays and misses he has survived the testing spell in the morning.
16:13
India 1st inns: 277-4 (100 ovs) vs Eng | Scorecard

India's batsmen are doing well to play out the opening spell from England's two best bowlers on Day 2. Run scoring is not their priority but seeing off the spell from Anderson and Broad seems to be their top agenda for the moment.

After a couple of maiden overs, Vijay steers Broad to the right of the fielder at point for a boundary and the next ball is driven to the left of the same fielder for a couple.

Liam Plunkett comes into the attack. A confident shout for LBW against Dhoni is turned down as India reach 277 for four in 100 overs with Vijay on 137 (324 balls) and Dhoni on 52 from 94 balls.
15:56   Vijay and Dhoni start off cautiously on Day 2
India 1st inns: 270-4 (96 ovs) vs Eng | Scorecard

DROPPED! Dhoni gets a lifeline as Prior puts down a straightforward chance stretching to his right. Dhoni (50) went after a wide full delivery which moved away but ended up getting an edge which was dropped by Prior to give the Indian captain two runs.

The next ball is a bit short but again Broad gets a lot of movement as Dhoni is beaten again. After leaving the next couple of deliveries, Dhoni cannot resist the temptation to have a go after another wide ball but again it goes past the edge of the bat.

England continue with their pressure tactics as Anderson and Broad bowl a maiden over each in succession.

Vijay breaks the shackles with another fantastic shot through the covers for a magnificent boundary, coming forward to a full delivery from Anderson and timing it perfectly off the middle to take his score to 130.

India are 270 for four in 96 overs, having scored 11 runs from the six overs in the first 30 minutes of the day.
15:39
India 1st inns: 263-4 (92 ovs) vs Eng | Scorecard

Vijay and Dhoni walk out to another sunny and bright morning at Trent Bridge to begin the second day of the first Test match, on Thursday.

Just one slip in place as Stuart Broad starts off with the ball for England with the second new ball just eight overs old.

The second ball stays low and bounces a couple of times on the way to the keeper.

Dhoni easily sees off the first over of the day easily with Broad bowling wide and the right-hander not bothering to go after it.

Anderson to bowl the second over of the day. The first ball is again outside the off-stump which Vijay lets go but has to defend the next ball which is on the stumps. The third ball again stays low and bounces again before going to the keeper. Vijay gets the first runs of the day as he steers it through his favourite thirdman region for a boundary.

At stumps on the opening day, India were 259 for four in 90 overs.

Murali Vijay batted beautifully through the day to finish unbeaten on 122 from 294 balls, hitting 20 fours and a six in the process. Captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni adopted a positive approach to hit 50 from 64 balls as the duo put on 81 runs for the fifth wicket to give India slight edge on the opening day.

England struggled with the slow pitch in Nottingham but took wickets at the beginning of each session to ensure they kept India within touching distance in good batting conditions at the start of the five-test series.

Shikhar Dhawan, Cheteshwar Pujara, Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane all fell early in a session, but Vijay's patience and expansive repertoire of shots helped keep the score ticking over.
