STUMPS - DAY 3

Eng 352-9 (106 ovs) vs India 457 | Scorecard

- Bhuvneshwar claimed 4-61 and Ishant took 3-109
- Joe Root's unbeaten fifty (78 not out) helps England survive Day 3

Root hit an unbeaten half-century to help England survive the third day. He made 78 from 158 balls, hitting eight fours, putting on an unbroken stand of 54 runs from 87 balls with lastman James Anderson, who stroked 23 from 31 balls.

Ishant Sharma's triple-wicket burst triggered England collapse in the post-lunch session as the hosts lost a flurry of wickets after the lunch break.

He finished with three for 109, while Bhuvneshwar kept chipping away at the wickets to claim four for 61 and Shami bagged two for 98.

India would have been disappointed at not being able to claim the final wicket and finish up England's innings. They are still 105 runs ahead and if they manage to take the last wicket quickly on Day 4, it would put them in pole position to push for a victory on the last two days.

Root drives Jadeja through the off-side for a couple to bring up England's 350, in the 105th over.

There is time for just one more in the day and Dhoni gives the ball to Stuart Binny. He starts with a full delivery which Root steers to thirdman but refuses the single before he takes one from the fourth ball and Anderson plays out the last two balls as England survive the third day.

He plays another lovely drive through the covers off the last ball of Jadeja's 22nd over as Dhoni brings the field in to save the single.

Anderson is not holding back as he mistimes Bhuvneshwar down the ground past mid-off for a boundary. In the next over, he reverse sweeps Jadeja fine on the off-side for another four to take his score to 16, all coming through boundaries.

Ishant strikes Anderson on the gloves with a quick bouncer who takes his eyes off and sustains a painful blow, forcing the physio to come out to attend him.

After 100 overs, England are 332 for nine, still trailing India by 125 runs.

Root is playing a vital knock, unbeaten on 66 from 133 balls, while Anderson has made 16 with the duo having added 34 runs so far.

Root is on 46 from 99 balls, a hit away from his half-century, while Plunkett has made five from 15 balls.

The right-hander completes his fifty with a single on the off-side in the 92nd over bowled by Kumar.

But Kumar cripples England further with the wicket of Plunkett, who plays down the wrong line and is bowled for seven.

Broad on the attack now! The left-hander smashes a half-volley from Ishant through the covers for a four before he repeats the shot four balls later to race to 47 from 39 balls, having hit nine fours.

England are threatening to run away with the game, smashing 65 runs from the last 10 overs and India's bowlers are looking to find the way to stop their charge.

Bhuvneshwar makes the all-important breakthrough with the crucial wicket of Broad, who is trapped leg before wicket as he misses one which goes through straight. Umpire Dharmasena did well to rule that out as the ball looked to be heading to hit the middle and leg stump.

Broad though is not convinced as he walks back after a quickfire innings of 47 from 42 balls, having hit nine fours.

Ishant then slips one down the leg side which Root flicks on the leg side to make three fours in the over.

England are 249 for seven in 80 overs, still needing nine runs to avoid the follow-on. The second new ball is available but India decide against taking it rightaway as Jadeja continues.

In Shami's next over, Broad punches it down the ground past mid-on for another four as England look to adopt a positive approach and bail themselves out of trouble.

Root finally finds the middle of the bat against Ishant as he flicks a full delivery through midwicket for a boundary. But he gets an inside edge off the next delivery trying to drive it through the covers and it goes for a four behind the wicket leaving the bowler shocked.

Eng 202-7 (71 ovs) vs India 457 | Scorecard

Bhuvneshwar comes back for a new spell, replacing Jadeja with around 10 mins to go for the tea break.

Prior slaps the first ball through the covers for a boundary but is dismissed two balls later.

Dhoni, standing up to the stumps, holds on to a wonderful catch to send back Prior for five. The England wicketkeeper is disappointed with the decision from umpire Dharmasena and replays indicate the ball missed the edge by quite a distance.

Two balls later, Ben Stokes is caught behind by Dhoni for a duck and this time it is a healthy edge.

Bhuvneshwar got the ball to leave the left-hander who dabs at it only to get the edge and Dhoni completes an easy catch.

Can England avoid the follow-on? 55 runs more needed...

Eng 197-5 (70 ovs) vs India 457 | Scorecard

Bhuvneshwar gets Root to edge the outswinger but it falls short of the fielder at first slip. He then takes a couple of steps down and across but is beaten and survives a LBW shout with the ball looking to slip down the leg side. Root is looking very shaky out in the middle as he edges another one which goes on the bounce to first slip.

Dhoni comes up to the stumps in a bid to stop Root from skipping down the track to the pacer.

Meanwhile, Ali, who hit a century in his previous Test, seems to be continuing in the same vein of form. Shami overpitches and Ali plays a beautiful drive through the covers off the first ball of the over and ends the over in same fashion with another magnificent drive to take his score to 14.

Time for some spin as Jadeja comes back for a fresh spell. Root tries to make room and play it through the off-side but the ball darts in sharply and he defends it at the very last minute. He turns the last ball fine on the leg side for a couple.

Shami finally gets it right. He attempts a bouncer which doesn't rise as much as expected and Ali takes his eyes off it but gets hit on the back of the bat and is caught in the slips for 14.

England continue to slip, losing their fourth wicket of the session and are reduced to 197 for five after 70 overs.

Ishant will continue, maybe for one more over, his seventh of the spell in the post lunch session. Left-hander Moeen Ali plays an elegant straight drive which speeds past mid-off for a boundary down the ground to get off the mark in style.

Shami induces an edge from Root as he looks to drive a full delivery which moves away but it flies past the slips for a four.

19:20   Ishant's triple strike leaves England in a mess
Eng 173-4 (60 ovs) vs India 457 | Scorecard

Ishant is all charged up at the moment. He is bowling full and getting the ball to dart in sharply. Joe Root is tentative to come forward and nearly drags one back on to his stumps as it goes on the leg side.

The pacer then leaves Root hanging as he gets one to move away, missing the edge of the bat by a whisker.

Meanwhile, Bell hits Bhuvneshwar for three boundaries in the 59th over as England look to settle down after those two quick wickets after the lunch break.

Bell looks in good touch as he flicks Ishant through the leg side for his sixth four to take his score to 25.

However, against the run of play Bell loses his wicket to Ishant after being caught in two minds. The right-hander initially decided to steer the ball to thirdman before deciding to let it go but it caught the bottom part of the bat on the way to wicketkeeper Dhoni to fall for 25.

Ishant has been wonderful with the ball after the lunch taking three for 23 in six overs post the lunch break. His total figures read three for 57 in 17 overs.

18:55   Ishant's double strike puts India on top
Eng 154-3 (57 ovs) vs India 457 | Scorecard

Ishant is in the middle of a really good spell. He gets another edge of Ballance but it flies past the slip cordon for a four which takes his score to 67.

Jadeja continues with his role to hold one end up as India's pacers attack from the other end. Bell flicks him for a four through the leg side but Jadeja has only conceded 22 runs from 14 overs.

Ballance nudges Ishant fine on the leg side for a four before the pacer gets revenge. Ballance plays all over a full delivery which goes straight and is struck on the pads right in front of the stumps to be trapped leg before wicket after a good innings of 71 from 167 balls, having hit nine fours.

Ishant's double strike has reduced to 154 for three in the 56th over with two new batsmen out in the middle as Joe Root walks out to join Ian Bell.

With Ishant getting the ball to move, Dhoni decides to replace Jadeja with Bhuvneshwar. He gets the first ball to swing away as Bell plays away from the body driving it to the covers and defends the next as Kumar starts his new spell with a maiden.
18:24   Robson out for 59, England lose 2nd wicket
Eng 139-2 (50 ovs) vs India 457 | Scorecard

Ishant strikes in the second over of the post lunch session. He beats Robson with the incoming delivery and traps him leg before wicket for 59. The Hot Spot shows some marks indicating it could have been an edge but replays from front on make it clear that the ball missed the edge and hit Robson right in front of the wickets.

Robson played a good innings of 59, adding 125 runs for the second wicket with Ballance to lay a solid foundation for England.

New batsman Ian Bell starts off with a boundary off the first ball he faces, pulling a short ball comfortably on the leg side.

England put on 88 runs in 31 overs in the morning session as the Indian bowlers toiled hard without any success.

For India, none of the bowlers were able to make any impression except for Jadeja, who had a tough catch dropped by Kohli at leg slip.

Bhuvneshwar did a steady job giving away 17 runs in 11 overs and Jadeja conceded 15 runs in 10 overs. But Shami struggled to maintain his control and was hit for 41 runs in 11 overs and Binny gave away 21 runs in five overs, while Ishant bowled 11 overs for 34 runs.

So far, Jadeja has done his part by rushing through his 10 overs for 15 runs, but Binny has gone for 21 runs in his first five overs.

Shami called back to bowl the final over of the session. He again drifts on the pads which Robson flicks to deep square leg for a couple. The right-hander picks a single two balls later as Shami again bowls it on the legs and flicks the last ball for a four tucking it off the hips.

He drives the first ball of the 38th over through midwicket for a four before he hits the fourth and fifth delivery through point and square leg for successive fours to get 12 runs from the over and take his score to 41.

Robson (43) gets a lifeline as Kohli puts down a tough chance at leg slip off Jadeja, in the 39th over.

Stuart Binny comes into the attack to replace Ishant. Ballance overtakes his partner Robson as he crashes an overpitched delivery from Binny through the covers for a four which also raises England's 100, in the 40th over.
