Eng 2nd inns: 105-4 (46 ovs); Target: 319 | Scorecard
India are looking to claim the remaining six wickets and complete a famous victory against England on Day 5 of the second Test at Lord's, in London, on Monday.
It would be a big boost for India, who were whitewashed 0-4 in England in 2011 and then lost 1-2 to England on their own backyard a year later.
At stumps on Day 4, England were struggling on 105 for four in 46 overs, still needing 214 runs for victory.
Root (14) and Ali (15) survived a tense last hour in the post-tea session as the Indian bowlers made most of a pitch offering a lot of uneven bounce and spin.
Ravindra Jadeja was India's star performer on Day 4 both with the bat and ball. He stroked a quickfire 68 from 57 balls, putting on 99 runs with Bhuvneshwar (52), who hit his third half-century in four innings in the series.
India finished on 342 in their second innings setting England a challenging target of 319 on a pitch getting increasingly difficult for batting.
Jadeja claimed the wicket of England opener Sam Robson (7) before Ishant left England reeling with the wickets of Cook and Bell.
