World T20 Updates: South Africa edge England to make the semis

Timeline  Refresh

23:04

England: 193-7 (20 overs)
South Africa: 196-5 (20 overs)

Parnell has finished his spell with figures of three for 31, his otherwise good day somewhat spoiled by successive boundaries by Bopara off his last two balls.

Hendricks to bowl the penultimate over. Crucial over this. A spectacular catch by De Villiers, off the third ball, ends Jordan's (16) innings.

England need 22 off the final over. Steyn to bowl. He has Bopara (31) caught by Miller off the first ball. It's all over for England.

Tim Bresnan (17 not out) hits a six and a boundary and another six in a valiant late burst. But it is too little, too late.

England have been forced to bow out of the tournament.

South Africa win by three runs to get through to the semi-finals.
22:49

England: 163-5 (18 overs)
South Africa: 196-5 (20 overs)

Imran Tahir (4-0-27-2) has Buttler (34) caught by Albie Morkel at backward point in his final over to probably draw the final blood.

England need 64 runs from the final five. They are going at the better rate than South Africa at the moment but have lost plenty of wickets en route.

The good news is Bopara is still fighting for them.
22:28

England: 128-4 (14 overs)
South Africa: 196-5 (20 overs)

Eoin Morgan and Jos Buttler are the two new batsmen at the crease. These two will have to do a bulk of the scoring if England are to win this match.

They reach the 100-run mark in the 12th over, courtesy a single by Buttler, off Steyn, who bowls a good come back over. In fact, England have had no boundary for 22 balls now.

The pressure tells as Tahir has Morgan (14) caught behind. Ravi Bopara is the new batsman in.

Hendricks is back and Buttler welcomes him with successive boundaries and ends it with a six as 17 runs come off it.
22:02

England: 84-3 (9 overs)
South Africa: 196-5 (20 overs)

Moeen Ali is the new batsman. Steyn is taken off after an over. Hendricks is back in the sixth. Hales smashes the fourth ball to the fence to help raise the England fifty.

Another bowling change. Imran Tahir to bowl the seventh over. Nine runs come off his first over, with Ali finding the fence.

Parnell strikes again in his second over. And it is the big one. Miller takes the catch again, this time at deep cover, as Hales' flight is cut short.

Hales' 22-ball 38 was inclusive of six boundaries and a six but there'll be no further heroics.

Parnell picks up his third wicket in the next ball, having Ali (10) caught behind.

His triple strike has put South Africa back in control.

21:40

England: 47-1 (5 overs)
South Africa: 196-5 (20 overs)

Beuran Hendricks to bowl the third over. Lumb smashes the second ball for a huge six over long-on.

Finally, Dale Steyn is brought in to bowl, in the fourth over. His otherwise good over is spoiled when Lumb smashes the last ball for a six over cover. Spectacular shot this!

It's five bowling change for South Africa in five overs, with Wayne Parnell coming in to bowl. He starts off with a wide. Lumb smashes the fourth ball to the fence, straight past the bowler.

However, Parnell has the last laugh, having Lumb (18) caught by David Miller at extra cover.
21:24

England: 22-0 (2 overs)
South Africa: 196-5 (20 overs)

JP Duminy to open the bowling for South Africa. Alex Hales and Michael Lumb start for England.

Hales hits the fourth ball past extra cover for a boundary. The fifth ball is swept backward of square. Another boundary.

Remember, he is the guy who single-handedly won it for England against Sri Lanka, in what is the highest chase so far.

Albie Morkel to bowl the second over. He's out caught. But wait! It is a no-ball. He survives and gets a free hit.

TV replays show it is a harsh decision. To rub salt into the wound, Hales hits the free hit delivery to the fence. And the next one as well.
21:04

South Africa: 196-5 (20 overs)

A six by Miller, off Chris Jordan, helps raise the 50-run partnership for the fourth wicket. However, Jordan has the last laugh, having Miller (19) caught by Moeen Ali.

Miller's 15-ball knock was inclusive of two boundaries and a six and he helped his captain add 54 runs (off just 25 balls) for the fourth wicket.

Albie Morkel is the new batsman in.

A six over midwicket by De Villiers (69 not out) followed by a boundary off Bresnan, in what is the final over, helps South Africa pile up a mammoth 196 for five.

England have a tough job at hand in what is a must win game.
20:52

South Africa: 167-3 (18 overs)

De Villiers has come a party it seems. He is enjoying the English bowling in a party mood.

Having hit Broad for a couple of boundaries, the South African captain hits a six off Dernbach.

David Miller also gets going with successive boundaries off Dernbach, who is clearly struggling with the red ball.

Another six off Dernbach helps De Villiers complete a well-deserved half century. At 23 balls, it is the fastest fifty by a South African batsman.

It is De Villiers' fifth T20 fifty.
20:30

South Africa: 121-3 (15 overs)

Having had to wait for 11 overs for their first breakthrough, England get their second fairly quickly.

Tredwell has De Kock (29) stumped in his third over. In comes JP Duminy to join his captain.

Successive boundaries by De Villiers helps SA get past the 100-run mark. However, there's more trouble for SA as the in-form Duminy (5) is run out by Ravi Bopara.
20:14

South Africa: 97-1 (12 overs)

A change of ends for Stuart Broad. And it ensures rewards, a big one at that.

Amla hits the fifth ball to Alex Hales.

Amla's 37-ball 57 was inclusive of six boundaries and two sixes and he helped De Kock add 90 for the opening wicket.

AB  de Villiers is the new batsman.
20:03

South Africa: 85-0 (10 overs)

Play resumes after 10 minutes and Amla hits the third ball after resumption to the fence. The batsman completes a well-deserved half century with a single in the next over by James Tredwell.

Amla's maiden T20 fifty has put South Africa in command.

Adding to England's woes is the fact that South Africa have still got 10 more overs to bat.
19:52

South Africa: 62-0 (7.3 overs)

The 50-run partnership for the opening wicket is reached in the sixth over. However, with South Africa on 62 for no loss (after 7.3 overs), the floodlights fail.

Yet again the floodlights cause a problem in Chittagong.

19:30

South Africa: 42-0 (5 overs)

Hashim Amla and Quinton de Kock have helped South Africa to a good start in Chittagong.

Amla, in particular, has been at his aggressive best, so far having scored four boundaries and a couple of sixes.

The Proteas have reached 42 without loss after five overs.
18:37
England won the toss and invited South Africa to bat first in their Group I match in the World T20 in Chittagong.

"We are happy chasing," reasoned captain Stuart Broad. His South African counterpart, AB de Villiers, concurred.

"With the results in the last few games it was an obvious decision," he said.

If England lose this game they are out of the tournament.
