India are not going down without a fight. Shami pulls a short ball from Rampaul for a huge six square on the leg side but is struck on the toes by a quick yorker from the pacer.

Rampaul finishes off things with a quick yorker which beats Shami to bowl him for 19.

Jadeja remains unbeaten on 33 as India are bowled out for a paltry 197 in 41 overs to lose by a huge margin of 124 runs.

Samuels was the star performer for West Indies, as he took two for 10 in three overs to follow up his sparkling century with the bat. Dwayne Bravo and Rampaul also claimed two wickets each as India's batsmen disappointed.

West Indies take a deserved 1-0 lead in the five-match series. The next match will be played in Delhi on Saturday, October 11.

Taylor tries the slower bouncer but Jadeja adjusts and pulls it square on the leg side for a six. He cuts the last ball for a boundary to take his score to 32 as India reach 189 for nine in 40 overs with 133 needed from 10 overs for victory.

Taylor keeps it a bit short to Mishra, who is unable to get a run from the 32nd over as the asking rate continues to climb steadily.

Bravo's clever change of pace causes the dismissal of Mishra, who is beaten by the slower ball and is trapped LBW for five.

Mohit Sharma hits a wide delivery over point for a four and tries to repeat the shot but ends up offering a simple catch to the fielder at thirdman.

Jadeja chips down the track to Benn but was beaten by the turn as he got an edge which flew wide of Bravo at first slip for three runs as wicketkeeper Ramdin chased it all the way down to the boundary.

Jadeja makes most of some width from Sammy as he smashes it through the covers for his first four to take India to 132 for five in 28 overs.

Part-timer Marlon Samuels comes into the attack and he strikes in his very first over. Dhawan tries to play the sweep but misses and is bowled after a good innings of 68 from 92 balls, having hit nine boundaries.

Bhuvneshwar survives a huge appeal for LBW against Taylor as India struggle to 137 for six in 30 overs with 185 runs needed from 20 overs for victory.

Sammy cripples India further with the key wicket of Dhoni, who missed an incoming yorker, and is bowled for a struggling innings of eight from 21 balls.

India slip to 114 for five in the 26th over on a pitch getting increasingly difficult for batting.

Ravindra Jadeja gets off the mark with a single before Dhawan pulls a short ball through midwicket for a four.

Dhawan steers the next ball behind point for two runs as India reach 121 for five in 26 overs.

Dhoni gives Benn the charge but is beaten by the bounce and he can only defend with his bat and pad close. He is unable to get a run from five deliveries as just a single comes from that over.

Dhawan slaps Benn through the off-side for a couple before he takes a single from the last ball to bring up his half-century from 71 balls.

India are 105 for four in 23 overs with Dhawan on 50 from 71 balls and Dhoni on six from 17 balls.

Left-arm spinner Sulieman Benn comes into the attack. He immediately gets some turns and nearly gets the wicket of Dhawan, who gets an inside edge but it falls short of Pollard at short leg.

All-rounder Darren Sammy comes into the attack. He offers Dhawan some width who is happy to punish through point for another four to take his score to 44.

After 20 overs India reach 100 for four with another 222 needed from 30 overs for victory.

Dhawan steers Russell past point for a four before Ambati Rayudu punches the fifth ball down the ground past mid-off for another boundary to get 10 runs from the over.

Rayudu plays a rash shot to give his wicket away. The right-hander made 13 from 21 balls before he tried to loft it down the ground but ended up offering a simple catch to the fielder at mid-on.

Suresh Raina throws his bat at the first ball, which is wide, but is beaten. But the left-hander does not survive for long as he inside edges one back on to his stumps to be bowled for a duck by his CSK team mate Bravo.

India in a spot of bother at 83 for four in 16.2 overs.

Dwayne Bravo comes into the attack as West Indies make their first bowling change. He makes a good start by giving away five runs in his first over.

Another bowling for West Indies as Andre Russell is brought into the attack and he makes a tidy start with three runs from the 12th over followed by four runs from the next as India reach 67 for two in the 13th over.

Taylor bowls it on the pads and Rahane helps it fine on the leg side beating the fielder inside the circle for a four and he repeats the shot three balls later for the same result. After the second boundary, the fine leg fielder is pushed back to the boundary but Taylor's struggle continues as he bowls another wide down the leg side. 10 runs from the over takes India to 31 for no loss in six overs.

Rampaul drops short and Dhawan is happy to pull it through midwicket for a four. He smashes the last ball through the covers but gets only a single to sweeper cover.

Dhawan growing in confidence as he steers a wide delivery from Rampaul through point for a four. But against the run of play India lose the wicket of Rahane, who is run out for 23 after a huge misunderstanding with his partner which saw both batsmen finish at the same end.

Dhawan flays the next ball which is again wide past point for a four as India reach 53 for one in nine overs.

Virat Kohli gets off the mark with two runs through midwicket but fails again in the same fashion, as he gets the edge to be caught in the slips for two.

India in trouble at 55 for two in 10 overs.

Fast bowler Jerome Taylor to bowl the second over. Rahane is beaten again outside the off-stump before he takes a quick single from the fourth ball on the leg side. Dhawan gets off the mark with two runs on the leg side.

Rampaul bowls another good over with the new ball, conceding just a single in his second over to make it two runs from two overs.

Rahane gets the first boundary of India's innings as he pulls a short ball from Taylor square on the leg side. Dhawan throws his bat at a wide delivery but misses as it goes through to the keeper.

Rahane repeats the pulls shot off the last delivery for another boundary as 10 runs come from the over.

Rampaul finally errs with his length, bowling it short and wide and Dhawan slaps it through point for his first boundary.

After five overs, India are 21 for no loss with Rahane on 13 and Dhawan on eight.

Shami picks up another wicket in his next over, his third, as Kieron Pollard looks for the paddle scoop but misses the ball and is bowled for two.

Mohit bowls a good penultimate over, giving away just eight runs as West Indies cross the 300-run mark with Samuels hitting a boundary off the fourth ball.

Samuels smashes the third ball of the last over, bowled by Shami, over long-off for a six. Sammy is dropped off the fifth ball and Virat Kohli also ends up lobbing the ball over the ropes to give away a six as West Indies finish on a huge 321 for six in their 50 overs.

Samuels is congratulated by all the Indian players as he walks back after a splendid innings of 126 not out from 116 balls, having hit 11 fours and four sixes.

Shami was India's most successful bowler but went for runs, taking four for 66 in nine overs, while Bhuvneshwar bowled well for 38 runs in 10 overs but the rest of the Indian bowlers disappointed.

Samuels survives a LBW appeal against Jadeja before he takes a single to bring up his century, from 98 balls, in the 45th over. Ramdin comes down the track and lofts it straight back over the bowler's head for a six to take the score to 280 for three in 45 overs.

Shami comes back and Samuels welcomes him by smashing the first ball through the covers for a four.

Shami makes the all-important breakthrough with the wicket of Ramdin, who hits a full toss straight into the hands of Jadeja at long-on.

Ramdin played a superb innings of 61 from 59 balls, putting on 165 runs from 139 balls for the fourth wicket with Samuels to put West Indies on course for a huge total.

Mishra comes back as Samuels again plays the late cut for two runs to thirdman. He repeats the shot off the next ball as Bhuvneshwar lets it go at short thirdman but Jadeja's quick work keeps it down to three.

Ramdin flicks Mohit to midwicket for a single to bring up his fifty from 53 balls, in the 44th over. In the same over, he slams it through point for a four as WI reach 273 for three in 44 overs, having scored at a rapid rate in the last few overs.

Samuels on 99 from 95 balls, while Ramdin is on 55 from 56 balls.

Jadeja is called back to replace Shami. He makes a good start, giving away a single from the first three balls before Ramdin makes room and plays the inside out chip shot over the covers for a four followed by a single as six runs come from the over.

Mohit comes back as Ramdin turns the second ball square on the leg side where a superb piece of fielding from Rayudu saves some runs. Samuels then crashes it through the covers for a boundary as the runs continue to flow for the visitors.

Jadeja continues as India look to make a breakthrough to stop West Indies' charge. The left-armer bowls a big wide down the leg side which Dhoni fails to collect to give away five wides. Dhoni has a confident appeal for stumping off the next ball which is referred to the TV umpire who rules it in the favour of the batsman but only just.

Jadeja bowls another one way down the leg side to gift five more wides as WI reach 239 for three in 40 overs, having scored 52 runs in the five overs of Powerplay.

The Batting Powerplay comes into effect as Shami is called back. Ramdin hits the fifth ball over the off-side for a six to bring up the 200-run mark, while the freehit is slammed for a four as Shami concedes 16 runs in the over.

Samuels hits the second ball from Bhuvneshwar through point for a four before Ramdin gets another boundary square on the leg side courtesy of a misfield from Rayudu.

West Indies looking to lift the tempo as they get 25 runs from the first two overs of Powerplay to reach 213 for three in 37 overs.

Samuels goes after leg-spinner Mishra carting him for back to back sixes to get 15 runs from the 32nd over.

Part-timer Suresh Raina comes into the attack. Samuels looks to have got an edge which stayed low and Dhoni was unable to stop it but the umpire called it a bye. Raina makes a tidy start, giving away four runs.

Samuels comes down the track to Raina in his next over, lofting him down the ground to bring up his fifty in some style, from 58 balls.

After 30 overs West Indies are 151 for three with Samuels on 32 from 46 balls and Ramdin on 12 from 20 balls.

Mishra comes back and he immediately gets the wicket of Bravo. The left-hander literally gifts his wicket away as he lofts the second ball down the ground for a six but is dismissed attempting the same shot off the next ball.

New batsman Marlon Samuels gets off the mark with a single before Bravo takes one to bring up the 100-run mark for the visitors in the 18th over.

Bravo getting his touch back as he punches a short wide delivery from Bhuvneshwar through the off-side as Mohit makes a good diving stop at mid-off to save a certain boundary. Smith flicks the last ball over midwicket for a four as WI reach 77 for one in 15 overs.

Change of ends for Jadeja as he replaces Mishra, who bowled two overs for nine runs in his first spell. Interestingly, Dhoni rotating his bowlers quite regularly giving all of them a few overs each in their every spell.

Bravo mishits the second ball from Jadeja but it falls safely on the off-side for two runs but he cuts the fourth ball past point for a four.

India introduce spin in the form of left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja. Smith wastes no time in getting after his Chennai Super Kings team mate Jadeja as he carts the third ball high over midwicket for the first six of the match. He takes a single before Bravo continues to struggle as he is beaten again.

Spin from both ends as leg-spinner Amit Mishra is called into the attack. Two singles before Smith survives a huge shout for LBW off the last ball of the over. He looked to play the sweep but missed and was struck right in front of the stumps but the umpire ruled in favour of the batsman.

Bhuvneshwar comes back after just a single over from Jadeja. He continues to be miserly giving away two runs from his fifth over.

Shami strikes with the wicket of Bravo, who goes after a wide delivery but gets an edge and is caught at first slip by Shikhar Dhawan for 17.

Darren Bravo comes in to replace his elder Dwayne as he walks out to bat at No. 3. He plays out of the rest of the over as Shami bowls a wicket maiden.

Mohit comes back after a good first spell by Bhuvneshwar. Smith gets a thick edge to thirdman for a couple before he lofts the next which falls a few inches clear of the fielder in the covers for one.

Smith then looks to slam it through the off-side but gets an edge which flies over the slips for a four and then heaves the next over mid-off for the same result.

Mohit continues to offer width as Smith cuts it past point but Mishra makes a good stop on the thirdman fence to keep it down to two as 14 runs come from the over.

Shami is in middle of a good spell. Left-hander Bravo is beaten outside the off-stump as Shami continues to make the ball talk before the West Indian gets a couple from the third ball through the off-side. Shami is left frustrated after another ball breezes past the outside edge as West Indies reach 52 for one in 10 overs with Smith on 21 from 24 balls and Bravo on three.

Bravo is beaten by Shami as the ball keeps low and even beats wicketkeeper Dhoni for four byes. He slams the next one down the ground past mid-on for a boundary before flicking the fifth through midwicket for another four. Shami continues to get late movement but this time it slips down the leg side and WI profit with two wides as Dhoni is unable to stop it. 14 runs from the over take WI to 33 for no loss in six overs.

Bhuvneshwar continues to keep it tight with just a single from his fourth over. He has conceded just three runs in his last three overs for excellent figures of eight runs in four overs including a maiden.

Mohammed Shami comes into the attack after just one over from Mohit. He bowls a wide full delivery as Smith goes after it but misses, who then takes one on the leg side.

Bravo then mishits the pull shot which falls safely on the leg side. The last ball is left alone as it swings a lot away after passing the stumps with Dhoni diving full length to collect it front of first slip.

Bhuvneshwar getting a lot of help with the new ball as he beats Smith is beaten a couple of times. A maiden over to Bhuvi as WI reach 19 for no loss in five overs.

Mohit Sharma to bowl the second over. Bravo and Smith, who have been both playing in India for the last couple of weeks for Chennai Super Kings in the IPL, look quite settled.

Bravo goes back and hits Mohit through the covers for his first boundary and punches the last one in similar fashion, this time past mid-off, for the same result to get 11 runs from the over.

Bhuvneshwar follows it up with a tight over conceding just two singles as WI reach 18 for no loss in three overs.

With Lendl Simmons out due to injury captain Dwayne Bravo has walked out to open the batting with Dwayne Smith.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar to open the bowling for the hosts. Smith smashes the second ball through the covers for a boundary to get WI off the mark in some style. He then throws his bat at a wide one but gets a thick outside edge which goes on the bounce to thirdman for a single.

Kumar bowls a beauty to Bravo as it moves enough to beat the defensive prod of the right-hander as five runs come from the first over.

The West Indies team is not in the right frame of mind heading into the Kochi ODI as the players mulled a strike and skip the match.

West Indies ODI captain Dwayne Bravo wrote a letter West Indies Players Association president and chief executive Wavell Hinds, stating: "The players are of the view that as a matter of principle, we should not accept these conditions whereby we are being asked to play a series against India without any certainty of what are our obligations and what we will be playing for. As we have indicated to you earlier, the players here in India are under tremendous stress and the team morale is at an all-time low."
14:14   LIVE Cricket! India opt to bowl in Kochi as WI players call off strike
India's batting mainstay Virat Kohli will be itching to get back among the runs after a poor run with the bat in England. Ajinkya Rahane will open the innings in the absence of the injured Rohit Sharma, while Ambati Rayudu would be looking to seal his World Cup place after a good showing in the five-match ODI series.

The focus will also be on India's pace attack with Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Mohammad Shami and Mohit Sharma looking to make it count on the flat pitches around India.

India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni has won the toss and elected to bowl in the first ODI against West Indies.

Dhoni says Amit Mishra and Ravindra Jadeja will be the two spinners for India with senior R Ashwin rested for the first three games.

Welcome to the coverage of the India vs West Indies One-Day International Series, beginning in Kochi, on Wednesday.

The first match will begin in 30 minutes as players from both teams have come out to warm up ahead of the game.

Earlier, there were some reports of West Indies players pulling out of the match because of strike over pay dispute but all that has been put to rest as the visitors are busy getting ready for the first ODI.
