STUMPS - DAY 3

Ind 2nd inns: 23-1 (8 ovs); Target: 176 | Scorecard

Dhawan is hurried into the stroke as he opts to play from the crease against Tharindu, who gets one to grip and turn. He takes a risky single after the cover fielder misfields calling his partner Ishant across. Surprisingly, Dhawan is trying to protect the nightwatchman and keeping as much strike as possible with him.

Ishant goes after a wide delivery from Tharindu as he drives behind point for a four.

Dhawan giving Herath the charge to get to the pitch and smoother the spin. He sweeps the fifth ball through the vacant fine leg region for a four as Dhawan continues his good form from the first innings despite having an injury.

Kaushal to bowl the final over of the day. He defends the first two balls before trying to drive the third but gets an inside edge to short fine leg. He switches to round the wicket but Ishant manages to see off the over despite being beaten off the last ball.

At stumps on Day 3, India are 23 for one in eight overs, needing another 153 runs for victory with two more days left in the match.

Dhawan, battling an injury, was unbeaten on 13, while Ishant was not out on five.

Herath comes on from the other end as he replaces pacer Prasad. He gets the wicket of Rahul, who plays on the backfoot, but is beaten and is trapped plumb in front of the stumps. Rahul fails for the second time in the match as he walks back after scoring just five.

A wicket for Herath after 35 overs in the match, he went wicketless in 33 overs in the first innings.

Ishant Sharma is the nightwatchman for India. He has a big crowd around him and has as many as six close-in fielders around the bat.

Ishant takes a single to get off the mark before Dhawan keeps strike with a single from the last ball.
17:17

Rahul flicks the last ball of the over through midwicket for two runs as seven come from Herath's first over.

Prasad bowls a good second over to Dhawan, who is content to play with caution with not many overs left before stumps.

Change in the bowling as Herath makes way for Tharindu Kaushal after bowling just one over with the new ball.

Rahul flicks the first ball to fine leg and is called for a single by his partner Dhawan. The left-hander goes back to the second ball and gets an inside edge on to his pads. The third ball is short as Dhawan pulls it through midwicket for two runs and sees off the rest of the over.

India bring up the field for the last ball trying to deny Chandimal a single and he hammers the last ball down the ground past mid-off for a four.

Pace from both ends as Ishant comes back from the other end. He strikes with the first delivery with the wicket of Kaushal, who throws his bat at wide one but gets an edge and is caught behind for seven.

Lastman Nuwan Pradeep is beaten off the first ball he faces before he drives a full toss through the cover for three runs.

Chandimal gets back on strike and hammers a full delivery over the off-side for a four but misses the next as he tries to flick it on the leg side.

Ashwin cleans up Pradeep with one which skids through straight and crashes into the stumps.

Sri Lanka are bowled out for 367 in their second innings as Chandimal is left stranded on a wonderful innings of 162 from 169 balls, having hit 19 fours and fours sixes.

Ashwin finishes with four for 114 in 28.2 overs to end with 10 wickets in the match after he had taken six for 46 in the first innings.

India need 176 to win the first Test match with around nine overs left on Day 3 and two more full days play left.

It remains to be seen whether Shikhar Dhawan has recovered from his injury and would be able to open the batting in India's second innings.

The target is not that big but a few early wickets could easily make it an interesting run chase on Day 4.

16:16

SL 337-8 (76 ovs) & 183 vs Ind 375 | Scorecard

Unfortunately for Herath and Sri Lanka, the deflection came off the thigh pad and not the bat. So another poor decision from the umpires.

Chandimal pounces on a short ball from Ashwin and pulls it over midwicket for a six. The last ball is again short as Chandimal pulls it over midwicket for a four. So India manage to somehow keep him off strike for the next over.

Tharindu Kaushal getting behind the ball and watchfully defending it. He tries the quicker ball but it slips down the leg side giving Kaushal his first runs of the match.

India miss a chance to get another wicket as Ishant fails to collect the ball at the non-striker's end and throw the stumps with the batsman Kaushal struggling to make his crease.

Ishant tries the bouncer to Chandimal, who is beaten by the first one, but pulls the next fine on the leg side for a four.

Ishant tests Herath with some bouncers but the left-hander is happy to duck under it.

Kohli ringing in the changes as Mishra replaces Harbhajan and he decides to bowl from round the wicket, in the rough outside the leg stump to Chandimal.

Mishra gets the wicket of Herath, who is caught at first slip by Rahane for one.

Rahane manages to set a new WORLD RECORD, claiming his eighth catch of the match, a feat never achieved before in Test cricket.

Sri Lanka have a lead of 127 runs with just two wickets in hand. It remains to be seen if Chandimal go on an all-out attack and score some quick runs.
15:45   Harbhajan finally strikes, SL lose 7th wicket

SL 303-7 (69 ovs) & 183 vs Ind 375 | Scorecard

The odd ball is turning as Ashwin once again zips past the outside edge of Mubarak's bat. He sweeps the fifth ball fine for two runs and gets another couple through midwicket off the last ball.

Harbhajan, into his 15th over of the innings, is still struggling to make an impact with the ball. Chandimal takes a single off the first ball as the lead reaches the 100-run mark.

In the next over, Chandimal finds the gap with the sweep for another boundary followed by a single as the runs continue to flow.

Harbhajan's struggles continue as he drops short and Mubarak pulls it through midwicket for a four.

But the veteran spinner gets his revenge as Mubarak gets the edge and is caught by Rahane at first slip for 49.

A wicket finally for Harbhajan in his 16th over of the innings. He had gone wicketless in eight overs in the first innings.

India have a chance to run through the order with the tailenders to follow. Rangana Herath gets off the mark with a single.

Mishra comes back into the attack. Jehan Mubarak, on a pair, comes down the track and lofts it over long-on for a six to get off the mark in style. He slog sweeps the last ball of the over to get a boundary and also signal his intent.

No stopping Chandimal, however, as he plays the switch hit to smash Ashwin through the covers for a four to take his score into the 80s.

He repeats the shot two balls later for three more runs. This is a clear strategy to disrupt the rhythm of India's best bowler by playing the reverse and the conventional sweeps.

Mishra bowls a short wide delivery which Chandimal cuts through point for a couple. He paddles the next ball from way outside off-stump for a single to fine leg.

A single to Mubarak on the leg side takes the lead past the 50-run mark.

SL 220-6 (51 ovs) & 183 vs Ind 375 | Scorecard

Ashwin comes back and immediately strikes with the wicket of Thirimanne, who is caught at first slip by Rahane for 44. Once again, Rahane does a superb job in the slips to hold on to a low catch as India get the crucial breakthrough after an aggressive partnership of 125 runs in 148 balls at a scoring rate of nearly five runs per over.

Nine wickets for Ashwin in the match, the only bowler to have consistently troubled the batsmen.
14:13

13:53

SL 202-5 (47 ovs) & 183 vs Ind 375 | Scorecard

Chandimal sweeps Harbhajan to the fine leg region for a single before Thirimanne comes down the track but doesn't hit it cleanly for three runs down the ground.

Huge gaps in the 30-yard circle and singles are now easy to come.

Thirimanne growing in confidence now as he thrashes Ishant through the point region for a four.

In the next over, Chandimal sweeps Harbhajan for one to level scores. The veteran spinner struggling to get the same amount of purchase like Ashwin or Mishra.
13:18   Chandimal blasts half-century, SL on the attack

In the next over, Thirimanne throws his bat at a wide delivery from Mishra, hitting it square on the off-side for three runs to bring up Sri Lanka's 150 followed by a single as Harbhajan struggles to get down and collect the ball.

The partnership is worth 57 runs from 12 overs as India's lead is getting slimmer rather quickly.

Ashwin bowls a beauty, spinning past the bat as Thirimanne while trying to play the front foot defense. He then slog sweeps the off-spinner over midwicket for a four to continue the flow of runs.

Kohli decides to bring back pacer Ishant with the spinners going for runs. The first ball is full and wide and Chandimal crashes it through the covers for a four.

He gets a leading edge off the next ball, which goes through the vacant thirdman region for another boundary.

12:59

SL 132-5 (35 ovs) & 183 vs Ind 375 | Scorecard

Ashwin to open proceedings after the lunch break. Thirimanne picks a single from the first ball before Chandimal plays the sweep for a boundary behind square on the leg side.

He tries it again off the next ball but this time he mishits it, going over the fielder at leg slip for a single.

Mishra comes on from the other end. He starts with a short ball and Chandimal pulls it square on the leg side for a six before he defends the rest of the over.

Thirimanne also decides to join in the party. He tries a wild slog sweep off Ashwin but is beaten by the turn as it beats everyone including the keeper, past first slip for a couple of byes.

Sri Lanka are 132 for five in 35 overs with Chandimal on 30 from 33 balls and Thirimanne on six. They still need another 60 runs to make India bat again.
12:13   Sangakkara and Mathews perish, SL 108-5 at lunch

LUNCH - DAY 3

SL 108-5 (30 ovs) & 183 vs Ind 375 | Scorecard

Dinesh Chandimal decides to take the aggressive route as he sweeps Ashwin for a four behind square on the leg side. He attempts another sweep but the ball looks to have gone off the gloves and helmet to leg slip. The Indians all go up in appeal but the umpire gives it not out and rightly so as the replays confirm. But hold on, the side angle replays show that the ball could have got a slight deflection from the bat.

Chandimal continues to attack as he comes down the track and heaves Ashwin over midwicket for a four.

Mishra might have got another wicket in his next over. Lahiru Thirimanne gets an inside edge and is caught at silly point umpire Nigel Llong turns down the appeal. This is poor umpiring and the Indians also have themselves to blame partly, having not taken the DRS.

Thirimanne has a close shave as he gets the edge but it falls short of Rahane in the slips. The ball is doing things here and batting has suddenly become very difficult.

Mishra getting a lot of turn and bounce. Chandimal drives one which hits the silly point fielder on the shoes and is caught by the fielder on the off-side. There is an appeal for a catch which is referred to the third umpire and again the benefit of doubt goes to the batsman. The Indians seems visibly disappointed with the decision, even the coaching staff in the dressing room.

Chandimal plays out the over as Sri Lanka go into lunch at 108 for five in 30 overs, still trailing India by 84 runs.

Ashwin once again was India's best bowler, taking two for 43 in 10 overs, including the prized wicket of Sangakkara, who threatened to play a big knock before he was dismissed.

Mishra came back late in the day but snapped up Mathews in his first over of the day and was unlucky to bag another one.

Harbhajan didn't make that sort of an impact on a pitch offering a lot of assistance to the spinners.

With Chandimal looking to attack and Thirimanne struggling to read the spinners, it remains to be seen if Sri Lanka can survive the post-lunch session.
11:49   Sangakkara and Mathews perish, SL in trouble again

SL 95-5 (26 ovs) & 183 vs Ind 375 | Scorecard

With the left-hander gone and Chandimal batting at No. 6, Kohli brings in leg-spinner Amit Mishra into the attack for the first time on Day 3. He bowled just one over, on the second day, in which he had claimed the wicket of Kaushal Silva.

Mishra makes it two wickets in two overs, with the wicket of Mathews. Once again the extra bounce does the trick as Mathews is caught at silly point for 39. The Sri Lankan captain came forward to defend but could not control it because of the extra bounce offering a simple catch to KL Rahul, who did well to hold on to it.
11:41   Sangakkara out for 40, SL lose 4th wicket

SL 92-4 (25 ovs) & 183 vs Ind 375 | Scorecard

Mathews looks to sweep Ashwin but misses as there is a faint appeal for leg before wicket. But he gets the sweep right off the fifth ball but only for a single to deep square leg.

In the next over, Sangakkara comes down the track and hits him against the line over mid-on for a four. The next ball is short and wide but Sangakkara is unable to find the gap on the off-side. Both the batsmen looking very comfortable now and the spinners have not been able to make an impact.

Mathews taking a few risks as he plays the reverse sweep against Ashwin, hitting it behind point for a four.

The scoreboard has kept ticking at a fair rate and the Indians have not been able to bowl a single maiden over on day three.

Sangakkara is beaten by Ashwin by one that turns as the Indians, except for the bowler, go up in appeal for a caught behind appeal. Ashwin has mixed it up quite well and has constantly created problems for the two batsmen.

And he is rewarded with the big wicket of Sangakkara, with one that bounces a bit more than expected. He looks to steer it to thirdman but gets an edge as Rahane in the slips pull off a stunning one-handed catch diving to his left.

Sangakkara walks back after scoring 40 from 70 balls to a huge cheer in his final innings in international cricket in Galle.

Sri Lanka are 92 for four in 25 overs, needing another 100 runs to avoid the innings defeat with six wickets in hand.
11:23

SL 75-3 (20 ovs) & 183 vs Ind 375 | Scorecard

Off-spin from both ends as Harbhajan Singh comes into the attack. He starts with a wide half-volley which Sangakkara crashes through the covers for a four and easily defends the rest of the over.

In the next over, Mathews again gives Ashwin the charge and lofts it over midwicket for a four, he was not in complete control of that shot. He sweeps the next ball for one before Sangakkara whips the fifth ball through midwicket as 10 runs come from that over.

The Indian spinners will need to be a bit patient and hope either one of the batsmen make a mistake or the pitch does something. Once the batsmen gets his eye in, it is much easier to deal with the spinners, so the key will be patience for both teams.

Ashwin gets one to turn square beating Sangakkara all ends up who can only smile before he turns it on the leg side for one.

Sangakkara and Mathews doing well to rotate the strike and keep the scoreboard moving. The right-left combination also not helping the spinners with the frequent rotation of the strike.

Sri Lanka have progressed well to reach 75 for three in 20 overs with Sangakkara on 35 from 56 balls and Mathews on 26 from 43 balls.
11:03   Sangakkara, Mathews steady SL after horror start

SL 55-3 (15 ovs) & 183 vs Ind 375 | Scorecard

Finally, spin is introduced on Day 3 as Ravichandran Ashwin is called into the attack.

He immediately gets into a good line and length, keeping it full and making Sangakkara play with three close-in fielders around the bat.

Sangakkara defends the first five balls before taking a single from the last ball to midwicket to keep the strike.

Ishant looking to bring Sangakkara forward as he keeps it full but the veteran left-hander is able to deal with it.

Ashwin giving the ball some rip as Mathews is beaten by one that turns sharply before he sweeps the next behind square for two runs. Another one turns big as Mathews is beaten yet again before he tries the sweep but misses. He then skips down the track but can only defend it back to the bowler.

Aaron replaces Ishant and even he looks to bowl full. Sangakkara drives it to the covers where the fielder misfields to give away a single. A slightly short ball as Mathews looks to pull but is unable to get hold it for just one run.

Aaron bowls it slightly shorter as Sangakkara tucks it off his hips through the vacant fine leg region for a four.

He switches to over the wicket and attempts another short ball which is pulled through fine leg again for another boundary.

Mathews comes down the track to Ashwin and lofts him straight down the ground for a six to bring up Sri Lanka's 50, in the 14th over. That also brings up the 50-run partnership for the fourth wicket.

There is an appeal for a catch at leg slip as Mathews gets an inside edge which taken by Rohit Sharma very close to the ground. The umpires check with the third umpire but the replays are not very conclusive. In the end, the benefit of doubt goes to the batsman.
10:41   Sri Lanka lose early wicket on Day 3, India on top

SL 34-3 (10 ovs) & 183 vs Ind 375 | Scorecard

Ishant looking to bowl short balls at Mathews's rib cage as he strikes the Sri Lankan captain on his body who is forced to get some treatment. A few deliveries, Mathews confidently drives Ishant through the covers for a four and two balls later pulls a short ball to midwicket for another boundary.

Aaron again tries a few short balls to Sangakkara but is unable to get the line right. A full delivery is then driven through the covers by the left-hander for a couple before Mathews defends the rest of the over.

Just a single from Ishant's next over as he gets a bit fuller as Sri Lanka reach 34 for three in 10 overs.

Sangakkara is being cautious and decides not to play at anything wide before the India pacer gets his length closer to the stumps. Sangakkara looks to drive but gets a thick outside edge which goes past the gully fielder for a four.

Mathews gets off the mark as he turns the first ball on the leg side for a single. Aaron bowls another quick bouncer as Sangakkara mishits the pull shot but it falls safely on the leg side for one.

The next ball, another bouncer, goes high over Mathews as Saha somehow gets a glove on it to save some runs.

A full delivery on the pads is turned square by Sangakkara for two runs.
10:10   Aaron strikes early, Sri Lanka lose 3rd wicket

SL 10-3 (5 ovs) & 183 vs Ind 375 | Scorecard

The Indians are charging out to the middle and they look eager to get on with things.

Sri Lanka will be hoping they can see off the first hour and also the shine off the new ball, which is just four overs old.

The firecrackers go off near the Galle fort as Sangakkara walks out to bat for his final Test innings at the venue.

Aaron opens the bowling and strikes with the first delivery of the day, a quick short delivery which rises more than expected and Dhammika Prasad (3) can only fend it to be caught by Rahane at gully, diving to his left.

Captain Angelo Mathews comes out to bat at No. 5 and he has a huge task ahead of him.

Aaron greets him with a bouncer which goes very high and flies over the keeper for five wides before he manages to see off the rest of the over.

Virat Kohli seems unstoppable in matches he has captained the Indian team, scoring four centuries in his first four games as the Test captain -- 15 and 141 at Adelaide, 147 at Sydney against Australia and now 103 against Sri Lanka.

Kohli is only the third player to score four hundreds in first four Tests as captain, emulating fellow countryman Sunil Gavaskar and Englands Alastair Cook. Cook, in fact, scored hundreds in his first five Tests as captain.

09:36   India in control of Galle Test, SL hopes rest on Sanga

SL 5-2 (4 ovs) & 183 vs Ind 375 | Scorecard

Welcome to coverage of Day 3 of the opening Test between Sri Lanka and India in Galle, on Friday.

On Day 1, centuries by opener Shikhar Dhawan and skipper Virat Kohli helped India gain a big first innings lead before their spinners dismissed both the Sri Lankan openers to put the tourists in control.

Resuming the second day on 128-2, India were all out for 375 in the final session to claim a first innings lead of 192 runs and Sri Lanka's troubles did not end there.

Openers Dimuth Karunaratne and Kaushal Silva were both dismissed in the first two overs with the hosts reeling at 5-2 in their second innings at stumps, still trailing India by 187.

Earlier, Dhawan (134) and Kohli (103) frustrated the Sri Lankan bowlers with a 227-run stand that was the cornerstone of the Indian innings.

Bowled out for 183 in the first innings, Sri Lanka had a few half chances in the morning session but otherwise failed to trouble the batsmen on the slow pitch at the Galle International Stadium.

The hosts made a stronger comeback in the later sessions, riding on off-spinner Tharindu Kaushal's second five-wicket haul and three wickets from paceman Nuwan Pradeep.
