STUMPS - DAY 2

SA 121-all out (49.3 ovs) vs India 334 | Scorecard

India have decided not to enforce the follow-on and will come out to bat in their second innings.

But with South Africa deciding to start with their fast bowlers, the umpires have decided that light is not sufficient for play to continue and called for stumps because of bad light.

India end the second day with a huge first-innings lead of 213 runs and will look to stretch their advantage when play resumes on Day 3.
16:45   Five-star Jadeja sends South Africa crashing for 121

SA 121-all out (49.3 ovs) vs India 334 | Scorecard

Last man Imran Tahir has a wild swing against Ashwin but holes a high catch on the leg side but Kohli running back fails to hold on to a tough catch. That was an straightforward opportunity and Ashwin won't be too happy with his captain.

But it doesn't India much as Tahir falls to the same bowler two balls later.

He goes for another wild swing and this time substitute KL Rahul does well at deep midwicket to take a good catch.

Morkel remains unbeaten on nine as South Africa fold for 121 in 49.3 overs in their first innings to concede a huge first innings lead of 213 runs.

Jadeja was the star for India with the ball, claiming five for 30 in 12 overs, while Ashwin and Yadav claimed two wickets each.
16:37   De Villiers out for 42 as Jadeja claims 5th wicket

SA 118-9 (47 ovs) vs India 334 | Scorecard

A good contest between de Villiers and Ashwin, with neither willing to give an inch. AB comes down the track as Ashwin shortens his length forcing the batsman to defend. The fourth ball is fired down the leg side with Ashwin expecting AB to come down but it spins away and beats wicketkeeper Saha for four byes.

Jadeja getting a lot of turn and bounce to some deliveries as de Villiers decides to withdraw from the shot at the last minute and sensibly so.

The left-arm spinner completes his five-wicket haul with the big scalp of de Villiers, who is brilliantly caught by Ishant at long-on inches inside the ropes.

De Villiers came down the track to loft Jadeja down the ground but failed to make proper connection and was caught quite close to the ropes by the lanky Ishant, who did well to judge the catch and hold his balance.

De Villiers walks back after scoring 42 from 78 balls, to leave South Africa on 118 for nine in 47 overs, with another 16 runs needed to avoid the follow-on.

16:22   Jadeja strikes again, South Africa lose 8th wicket

SA 103-8 (43 ovs) vs India 334 | Scorecard

A single each to de Villiers and Piedt brings up South Africa's 100, in the 41st over as just two runs come from Jadeja's eighth over followed by a maiden over from Ashwin.

Jadeja gets one to turn and spit off the surface, beating Piedt all ends up and even wicketkeeper Saha as they get a bye.

De Villiers gets an inside edge which flies past the fielder at short leg, he barely had time to react.

But the change of pace proves costly for South Africa as Jadeja gets the wicket of Piedt, who is caught at first slip for five.

South Africa are 103 for eight in 43 overs, needing another 31 runs to avoid the follow-on. Will de Villiers go on the attack now and look to score some quick runs before he runs out of partners?
16:13   Batsmen flop to leave South Africa in trouble on Day 2

SA 98-7 (40 ovs) vs India 334 | Scorecard

De Villiers clips a full delivery from Ishant to deep square leg for a single. Piedt gets an inside edge which saves him from a possible leg before wicket and also fetches him a single to get off the mark.

Meanwhile, AB makes his presence felt as he smashes a short wide delivery from Ishant square on the off-side for a four. Ishant bowls a similar delivery and AB is happy to hit him again through the same region for another boundary.

Piedt drives Ashwin through the off-side for two runs and takes a single from the fifth ball.

De Villiers decides to retain strike as he plays a risky reverse sweep shot for a single on the off-side.

16:05   Ashwin scalps Abbott as South Africa continue to slip

SA 84-7 (38 ovs) vs India 334 | Scorecard

De Villiers sweeps Ashwin from well outside the off-stump but gets just a single. New batsman Kyle Abbott comes forward and drives a full delivery from Ashwin straight down the ground for a four.

However, Ashwin gets revenge off the very next delivery, trapping Abbott leg before wicket for four. He went way back in his crease to defend but missed and was caught plumb in front of the stumps to give Ashwin his first wicket of the innings.

South Africa slip to 84 for seven after 38 overs, with another 51 runs needed to avoid the follow-on.
15:58

SA 79-6 (37 ovs) vs India 334 | Scorecard

Ishant beats Vilas with one that leaves the right-hander who plays away from his body but misses.

Ishant bowling from wide of the crease and trying to get the ball in and also make use of some reverse swing.

He bowls a beauty to break through the defences of Vilas, who looks to defend but is beaten as the ball crashes into the off-stump.

Vilas is bowled for 11 as South Africa slip to 79 for six, in the 37th over, they still need another 55 runs to avoid the follow-on.

AB, who is batting on 24 from 51 balls, holds the key for the visitors.
15:52   Ishant dismisses Vilas, SA lose 6th wicket

SA 79-5 (36 ovs) vs India 334 | Scorecard

De Villiers gives Jadeja the charge and takes one to long-off before Dane Vilas gets off the mark with a single on the off-side.

Yadav bowling it full and get some swing. Vilas inside edges it to fine leg as he goes for a big drive through the off-side but ends up getting two runs in the process.

Off-spinner Ashwin comes back into the attack as Jadeja gets a break after taking three for 22 in seven overs.

De Villiers is looking quite solid and is keeping the scoreboard moving against the spin-pace combo which India has employed at the moment.

Vilas drives Ishant through the covers for two runs before he flicks the next ball through midwicket for his first boundary.

Ashwin gets one to go straight as Vilas gets a thick edge which stays low and goes past slips for one as Proteas reach 79 for five in 36 overs.
15:27   Duminy bowled for 1 as South Africa collapse

SA 65-5 (31 ovs) vs India 334 | Scorecard

JP Duminy gets off the mark with a single before AB plays down the wrong line and gets an inside edge but is safe. Jadeja gets the next ball to turn but the edge goes past the fielder at first slip for two runs. He is mixing it quite well and giving the South Africans a lot to think about.

The wickets continue to tumble and this time Yadav produces a peach to get rid of Duminy.

The left-hander is beaten by a full delivery which moves away slightly, going past the edge and crashes into thee stumps to bowl the left-hander for one.

South Africa have lost their last three wickets for nine runs in the space of five overs to find themselves reeling on 65 for five in 31 overs.

Interestingly, the last four South African wickets have all come off the last deliveries of the over -- three to Jadeja and now one to Yadav.

Yadav also completes his 50 wickets in Tests in his 17th match, justifying his inclusion ahead of Varun Aaron.
15:16

SA 62-4 (28 ovs) vs India 334 | Scorecard

AB comes down the track to Jadeja and smashes him back over his head for a four before taking a slip on the off-side.

Faf du Plessis has struggled for runs in the Test series. He is struck on the pads off the very first delivery but the umpire turns down the LBW appeal, maybe going down the leg side.

However, he plays a reckless shot to cause his own downfall. He looks to paddle Jadeja fine but ends up spooning a simple catch to Rahane on the leg side, who runs across from slip to take it.

Faf walks back for a duck as South Africa slip to 62 for four in 28 overs, with Jadeja taking three for 17 in five overs.

AB is visibly disappointed as he shows his frustration from the other end. Once again he is left with a lot to do with not much support from his team mates.

15:07   Jadeja claims 3rd wicket to leave SA in a mess

SA 56-3 (26 ovs) vs India 334 | Scorecard

Ishant from the other end and he starts with a superb unplayable which drags Amla forward before beating him with some slight movement.

AB de Villiers defends the first four deliveries from Jadeja before he drives one through the covers for a four. He punches the next delivery through midwicket for another boundary to show his positive intent right from the start.

A single for Amla courtesy of a pull shot to deep square leg which brings up South Africa's 50, in the 23rd over.

AB guides a wide delivery from Ishant behind point for two runs and repeats the shot off the fifth delivery as substitute KL Rahul does well to run after it and retrieve it inside the ropes to keep it down to two.

Out of nowhere, Jadeja bags another wicket as Amla is caught behind for a painstaking innings of three for 34 to continue his poor run in the series.

He tried to cut a short ball but ended getting an edge and was caught by wicketkeeper Saha and immediately set off without even waiting for the umpire's decision.

Amla's dismissal leaves SA in a spot of bother at 56 for three in 26 overs.
14:37   Jadeja strikes, South Africa lose 2nd wicket

SA 40-2 (20 ovs) vs India 334 | Scorecard

Change of bowling straightaway after the tea interval as Ravindra Jadeja comes into the attack, in place of Ashwin.

The first ball turns and beats Bavuma, a puff of dust on the spot where the ball bounced on the pitch. The next ball is straight as Bavuma nudges it fine for a couple before he defends a full delivery off the backfoot and looked very clumsy doing it.

The ball kept a bit low and went straight on and Bavuma, who played from the crease, missed it completely and was bowled for 22.

A wicket in the first over of the post-tea session to leave South Africa on 40 for two in 20 overs.

14:14   South Africa 38-1 at tea on Day 2 after India post 334

SA 38-1 (19 ovs) vs India 334 | Scorecard

Yadav and Ashwin building the pressure with some disciplined bowling, as they bowl three maiden overs on the trot.

Infact, Amla had a close shave against Ashwin as the inside edge popped on the leg side but Rohit Sharma at short leg barely had the time to react. A difficult chance, if you can call it.

Yadav to bowl the final over of the session. Bavuma turns the fourth ball on the leg side for a single for the first run after the space of 24 deliveries.

At tea on Day 2, South Africa are 38 for one in 19 overs with Bavuma on 20 and Amla on one.

Yadav was the only wicket-taker for India, as he took one for 29 in eight overs, while Ashwin and Ishant bowled tight spells.
14:07   Yadav strikes, South Africa lose 1st wicket

SA 37-1 (15 ovs) vs India 334 | Scorecard

Ishant tries the short ball to Elgar, who has struggled against that length, but this he manages to guide it to fine leg for one.

The last ball is a half-volley on the pads which Bavuma punches down the ground past mid-on for a four, the first boundary conceded by Ishant in six overs.

Ashwin giving it a lot of flight but the Proteas are not willing to try anything fancy against him as the off-spinners bowls his second maiden over in succession.

Yadav comes back into the attack, replacing Ishant. And he continues to give away runs as a short ball is pulled in confident fashion by Elgar behind square on the leg side for a four.

Ashwin getting some extra bounce but Bavuma manages to get a single on the leg side and Elgar takes one two balls later.

Bavuma looks to sweep but is beaten and there is a soft appeal for LBW but the umpire is not interested but tries it again, and only for a single.

Yadav makes the first breakthrough for India with a full delivery, swinging away from Elgar, who pokes his bat and only manages an edge.

Elgar walks back for 17 as South Africa are reduced to 36 for one in the 15th over.

Captain Hashim Amla gets off the mark with a single on the leg side.
13:37

SA 22-0 (10 ovs) vs India 334 | Scorecard

Ishant bowls another maiden over on the trot. A hint of reverse swing for the tall pacer bowling on his home ground as he keeps slanting the ball away from left-hander Elgar and sends down another maiden over.

Yadav is taken off the attack as spin is introduced in the form of off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin. Bavuma defends the first few deliveries before he attempts the sweep but is unable to beat the fielder behind square on the leg side for another maiden over as South Africa reach 22 for no loss in 10 overs.

Bavuma, opening for the first time at any level, is looked quite assured on 11, while Elgar has had a few close shaves and is on the same score.

13:34   South Africa off to a good start after India post 334

SA 22-0 (8 ovs) vs India 334 | Scorecard

Elgar is having a few close shaves. He offers no shot to Ishant and is struck on the pads but the umpire turns down the loud confident appeal by the Indians.

Bavuma is looking much more assured as he taps a full delivery from Yadav through midwicket for a four.

The right-hander turns a short delivery off his hips square on the leg side for two runs as Yadav continues to leak runs from his end.

Elgar turns a short ball on the leg side and hits Pujara at short leg on the left wrist and Kohli gifts away five overthrows with a wild unnecessary throw at the bowler's end. Those five runs make it South Africa's best opening stand of the series, beating the 17 by Elgar and Stiaan van Zyl in Nagpur.

Those five runs spoil Yadav's figures even further, he has gone for some runs with the new ball, giving away 21 runs in four overs, while Ishant has conceded just one run in four overs, including three maidens.
13:03

SA 10-0 (4 ovs) vs India 334 | Scorecard

Ishant has a huge appeal for LBW turned down against Elgar. The left-hander went on the backfoot to defend but missed a straight delivery but luckily for him the ball pitched outside the leg stump.

Elgar takes a single from the fourth delivery on the leg side to get off the mark before Bavuma defends the last two deliveries of the over.

In the next over, Elgar is squared up as he edges one but it goes along the ground past gully for a four.

The next ball is on the pads but the left-hander can't beat the fielder at midwicket before Yadav beats him which moves away slightly, at a good pace.

Yadav bowls a good short ball as Elgar looks to fend it and nearly ends up gloving it to Pujara at short leg but it bounces a bit short. Good bouncer!

Elgar turns the last ball to the fine leg region for a single.
12:53

SA 4-0 (2 ovs) vs India 334 | Scorecard

A big challenge awaits South Africa's batsmen on a pitch not exactly easy for batting as they look to go after India's healthy first innings total of 334.

Ishant Sharma to open the bowling for India as South Africa's new opening pair walks out.

Dean Elgar has a new opening partner with him in Temba Bavuma, who will open the batting for the first time in his career.

Ishant looking to slant it away from left-hander Elgar, who defends the first ball before he offers no stroke to the next three deliveries.

Umesh Yadav to bowl the second over. The first ball swings away as Bavuma opts to leave it alone before doing the same with the next two deliveries. Yadav gets it closer to the batsman, who defends it off the backfoot with soft hands before tucking the fifth ball off his hips through square leg for a four to get himself and the team off the mark.
12:45   Abbott claims 5 wickets to bowl out India for 334

India 334-all out (117.5 ovs) vs SA | Scorecard

The field is spread around for Ashwin. He drives a wide delivery from Abbott to deep point and turns the single off the second ball not wanting to expose Yadav so early in the over.

Ashwin showing good awareness of the situation as he taps the last ball gently to mid-on and scampers across for one to retain strike.

In the next over, Ashwin takes a single from the third ball. Yadav can't resist the temptation and eventually decides to have a go, slog sweeping Tahir over midwicket for his first boundary.

Abbott gets the key wicket of Ashwin in the next over. The right-hander top edges the pull shot and is caught on the leg side after a fine innings of 56, having hit six fours in his 140-ball knock.

A superb knock from the right-hander as his partnership with Rahane helped India crossed the 300-run mark.

Ishant Sharma last just two balls as he is trapped leg before wicket by Abbott for a duck as India are bowled out for 334 in 117.5 overs in their first innings.

This is Abbott's second five-wicket haul in Tests as he finishes with superb figures of five for 40 in 24.5 overs, while Piedt claimed four for 117.

Rahane was instrumental in India getting to this score as he played a superb innings of 127. Ashwin was the next best scorer as he played a valuable innings of 56, while Virat Kohli made 44.
12:19   Ashwin hits half-century to build India's score on Day 2

India 328-8 (115 ovs) vs SA | Scorecard

Pacer Kyle Abbott to resume proceedings after the lunch break. Ashwin taking his time to get his eye in as he comfortably plays out a maiden over. Infact, he played a good drive through the covers which was well stopped by the fielder to save some runs.

Imran Tahir straightaway from the other end after the lunch break. Surprisingly, Piedt, who took 4 wickets on Day 1 and bowled a lot of overs, has been used sparingly on the second day.

Yadav gets the first run of the session as he drives Tahir down to long-on and Ashwin does the same next ball, off a full toss as two runs come from the over.

11:35   Rahane gets century, Ashwin hits 53; India 326-8 at lunch

LUNCH - DAY 2

India 326-8 (113 ovs) vs SA | Scorecard

What a crucial innings from Ashwin, at a time when the team needed it the most. The Indian lower order has shown more commitment and focus than some of their team mates batting higher up the order.

Off-spinner Piedt comes back as he replaces Ashwin. Yadav is beaten by one which goes straight but manages to see off the over as lunch time approaches.

Tahir to bowl the final over of the session. Ashwin turns the fourth delivery, a googly on the leg stump, fine on the leg side for two runs before he takes a single from the fifth ball while Yadav defends the last ball.

At lunch on Day 2, India reach 326 for eight in 113 overs, having scored 95 runs from 29 overs while losing just one wicket.

Ashwin is unbeaten on a solid innings of 53 from 121 balls, while Yadav is on five from 22 balls with the duo putting on 30 runs so far.

Rahane played a splendid innings of 127, the first century of the series, before he was dismissed by Tahir after he had added 98 runs from 194 balls for the eighth wicket with Ashwin.

The session belonged to India, who find themselves on top at the moment. With Ashwin out in the middle and batting relatively untroubled they would look for a few more runs after the lunch interval.

We will be back in the post-lunch session. Stay tuned!

11:24   Ashwin hits half-century to take India past 300

India 323-8 (111 ovs) vs SA | Scorecard

Ashwin picks an easy single on the off-side off Elgar before Umesh Yadav crashes a full toss down the ground as Piedt misfields at long-off to give away a four. That boundary also brings up India's 300, in the 106th over of the innings.

Another misfield from the South Africans in the next over as Ashwin steers Tahir towards point where the fielders lets it go through for a four. A few deliveries later, he drives a full delivery through the covers for two runs before paddling the fifth ball fine for one.

Elgar is taken off as South Africa decide to bring back their pacers. Morkel errs with his line as he bowls a full delivery on the pads to Ashwin, who flicks it stylish through square leg for a four to take his score to 40.

Yadav is being watchful against Tahir fully aware that Ashwin at the other end is doing well with the bat. Yadav is capable of holding his own with the bat, he recently hit a century in Ranji Trophy for Vidarbha against Odisha.

Morkel trying to direct short balls at Ashwin, who leaves a couple of them before guiding one delicately over the wicketkeeper for a four.

In the next over, Ashwin comes down the track to Tahir and lofts him straight, over long-on for a six to complete his half-century, from 116 deliveries.
10:59   Rahane dismissed for 127, India lose 8th wicket

India 296-8 (105 ovs) vs SA | Scorecard

Not much of bowling to Piedt, who bowled a lot on Day 1, before Amla decides to bring leg-spinner Imran Tahir into the attack.

The first ball is a bit straight as Ashwin tucks it on the leg side for one and Rahane takes a single from the fifth ball. There is a huge appeal for LBW off the last ball of the over as Ashwin was struck on the pads while looking to defend but the umpire turns down the appeal.

Rahane plays a cracking inside out lofted shot off Elgar, lofting him over the covers for a boundary. Two more singles follow as the scoreboard continues to tick at a good rate for the Indians.

Elgar gets one to turn sharply as Rahane throws his bat at it but is beaten and the turn takes the ball to first slip. Ashwin at the other end will definitely relish watching the ball turn so much.

Tahir beats Ashwin with the googly as the leg-spinner continues to tray a mix of variations, who picks a single on the leg side.

It is Tahir, who makes the first breakthrough for South Africa on Day 2 as he claims the key wicket of Rahane.

The right-hander once again attempts the inside out lofted shot but ends up hitting it straight to the fielder in the covers. He walks back after a splendid innings of 127 from 215 balls, having hit 11 fours and four sixes, which rescued India after they were struggling on 139 for six at one stage.

He put on 98 runs for the eighth wicket with Ashwin, who has looked quite solid on 28, from 94 balls.

10:43

India 281-7 (100 ovs) vs SA | Scorecard

A single each off  Piedt and Elgar in successive overs as India reach 281 for seven in 100 overs, having scored 48 runs in 14 overs without losing a wicket so far on Day 2.

Rahane has been instrumental in building India's score as he registered the first century of the series. He has got good support from Ashwin, who has made 24, with the duo putting on 84 runs for the eighth wicket so far.

India, who were struggling on 139 for six at one stage, have made a good comeback courtesy of Rahane and his good partnerships, first with Jadeja and then Ashwin.

From hereon, India will be looking towards a score of around the 350-run mark, which should put them in a good position going forward in this Test match.

10:39   Rahane hits century to boost India

India 279-7 (98 ovs) vs SA | Scorecard

Off-spinner Dane Piedt comes into the attack as the new ball didn't work to plan for the South Africans.

Ashwin defending watchfully against his opposite number as just two singles come from the over.

It will be spin from both ends as part-timer Dean Elgar comes into the attack from the other end ahead of specialist spinner Imran Tahir.

The first ball spins sharply beating Rahane as Vilas fails to collect it and Elgar is disappointed. Looks like Rahane got a thin edge but replays are not conclusive. He retains strike with a single from the last ball.

Rahane looking to be a bit more positive after getting to his century. He decides to go after Piedt as he comes down the track and lofts him over long-on for his third six as the runs continue to come at a good rate.

Two balls later, he comes down the track again, makes a bit of room and lofts it over the off-side for another six, this time it carries comfortably over the fence at long-off.

Once again he takes a single from the last ball to retain strike.

10:17   Rahane hits century as India make good progress on Day 2

India 257-7 (94 ovs) vs SA | Scorecard

Rahane taps Abbott on the off-side for a single to move to 96 and within a boundary of his century.

The pacer bowls a short ball to Ashwin, who is looking quite confident now, and pulls it to fine leg for a single.

Rahane plays a cracking straight drive, back past the bowler for a boundary to complete his hundred in grand style, from 180 deliveries, having hit 10 boundaries in total.

And incidentally, Rahane brings up his first hundred in India on the very ground he made his debut on. His debut match didn't go to plans as he failed in both the innings but he has made up for it in a big way. He also makes up for his poor run of scores in the first three matches of the series.

This is the first hundred of the series from both sides and Rahane deserves a lot of credit for working hard on a pitch not exactly easy for batting. He also got two lifelines along the way and how much South Africa will rue those drops.

10:11   Rahane, Ashwin build India's score on Day 2

India 251-7 (93 ovs) vs SA | Scorecard

Morkel tries the bouncer but Ashwin is content to leave it alone before he plays a nice straight drive two balls later which the mid-off fielder dives but half-stops it to give only a single.

Abbott gets Ashwin to edge a full delivery as he goes for a drive through the covers but Hashim Amla at first slip is unsure if he has taken the catch cleanly. The umpires refer the decision to the third umpire with a soft signal saying not out and replays indicate that the ball could have touched the ground before Amla took it. And the third umpire rightly turns confirm that the catch was not taken cleanly.

He turns the third ball on the leg side before Rahane plays a cross batted swat but gets only one run.

Morkel attempts a short ball but this time Rahane plays the pull shot but slow running between the wickets from his partner gets him just a single.

Ashwin then plays a delightful shot through the covers, going back and hitting a short delivery through the gap in the off-side, for a boundary which would have made many a batsman proud.

That boundary brings up the 50-run stand for the eighth wicket between the duo from 120 deliveries as India continue to build.
09:56   Rahane closes in on century as India make good progress

India 234-7 (90 ovs) vs SA | Scorecard

Morkel bowls a quick bouncer which goes high over the batsman as keeper Vilas does well to stop it, leaping high. Ashwin again pulls the last ball but this he can't find the gap at midwicket.

Slowly but surely, Ajinkya inching towards his century as he collects a single off Abbott to take his score to 92.

Two balls later, Ashwin plays a nice wristy flick through midwicket for his second four. He is timing the ball really well this morning as he plays a couple more good shots but fails to find the gap both times.

Morkel bowl a good line and length to Rahane in the channel just outside the off-stump. He goes hard at the fourth ball only to get an edge towards thirdman for a single and Ashwin also gets a single in the same region.

After defending the first five deliveries from Abbott, Ashwin throws his bat at the last ball of the over for a single to retain strike.

India reach 243 for seven in 90 overs. Rahane closes in on the first century of the series, having made 93 from 171 balls, while Ashwin is looking solid on 13 from 50 balls.
09:41

India 234-7 (86 ovs) vs SA | Scorecard

Morne Morkel to open the bowling for South Africa on Day 2 as the visitors take the second new ball.

The first ball is short and swings into Ajinkya Rahane, who offers no shot and is hit on the thigh pad. Three balls later, Morkel has a LBW appeal turned down after Rahane looked to play a full delivery across the line before he takes a single to fine leg.

Ravichandran Ashwin plays a loose shot off the last delivery, trying to flash at a delivery wide outside the off-stump.

As expected, Kyle Abbott to start off from the other end. He appeals for a caught down the leg side against Rahane but the umpire is not interested before he drives the fourth ball to thirdman for one and Ashwin picks a single from the fifth ball.

Rahane plays a good straight drive off the last ball but unfortunately for him it is a bit too straight and strikes the stumps at the non-striker's end to deny him some runs.

09:39   Stay at the wicket, runs will come: Gavaskar

India 234-7 (86 ovs) vs SA | Scorecard

Former captain Sunil Gavaskar has advised Indian batsmen to show patience and lauded Ajinkya Rahane for his unbeaten 89-run innings which helped India end the opening day at 231-7 against South Africa in the fourth and final Test in New Delhi.

"If you see the temperament that Rahane showed despite not getting runs in last few appearances in Bangladesh and Sri Lanka...I think when you get into a situation and you show believe in yourself and show the patience, then it can happen," Gavaskar said.

"My honest advice to everybody is don't get too fussed about the fact that you are not making runs on pitches where the ball has done something. I think you need to show patience like Rahane showed. You stay at the wicket, runs will come.

"These are not impossible wickets, they are difficult wickets to bat on, where the ball doesn't come on to the bat as quickly as you want as strokeplayers. I think, because of so many limited over cricket, players get eager and get out. So my advice is have patience," Gavaskar told NDTV.

09:10   'Rohit Sharma is almost on self-destruction mode'
Former batsman Sanjay Manjrekar feels that Rohit Sharma is on a self-destructive mode and said it will be difficult for him to retain his place in India's Tests squad.

"He would be hoping for a second innings and he gets an opportunity to bat and he needs to score to save his Test place. It has come to that situation where the selectors will be thinking hard if Rohit Sharma deserves a test place," Manjrekar said.

"What goes against him is the way he gets out. Even today, at a crucial juncture trying to hit a bowler for a six and getting out. His game is built on lofted shots. the sixes and big shots are part of his DNA, his basic game.

"What he has struggled to do is rein it in. In England also he got out while playing a big shot. He plays a lot of them in other format of the game. He is almost on self-destruction mode," he said.

08:56   Rahane the key for India, SA eye early wickets on Day 2
Welcome to the coverage of Day 2 of the fourth and final Test between India and South Africa in Delhi, on Friday.

India will be hoping Ajinkya Rahane can register the first century of the series and also guide them towards a healthy first innings total.

On Day 1, Rahane rallied India with a gutsy, unbeaten 89 as India's much-vaunted top-order failed yet again. At stumps, the home side was 231 for 7 in 84 overs, when bad light forced an early end to the day's proceedings.

Along with Rahane, Ravichandran Ashwin was unbeaten on 6.

India's tormentors were off-spinner Dane Piedt (4-101 in 34 overs), playing his first Test of the series, and pacer Kyle Abbott (3-23 in 17 overs), who was economical as well as incisive with his swing bowling.
