Timeline  Refresh

16:31

England: 231 (41.5 overs)
Australia: 342-9 (50 overs)

James Taylor is on 98 when he is adjudged leg before. He goes for a review and the decision is reversed. The ball was clearly missing leg. Hazlewood is deprived of his first wicket.

But the umpires also check for a run out of James Anderson (8) and this time the batsman is caught short. Unfortunate for Taylor. He remains stranded on 98.

Australia by 111 runs to start their campaign on an emphatic note. England, well, they have to regroup and focus more on their death bowling.

Marsh (23 and five for 33) should be the man of the match.
16:20

England: 221-9 (41 overs)
Australia: 342-9 (50 overs)

Steven Finn is the new man in. He survives for six balls before being caught and bowled by Johnson, giving the latter his second wicket.

England reach the 200-run mark in the 38th over, courtesy five wides.

And James Taylor is into his 90s, with James Anderson for company.
15:58

England: 194-8 (36.1 overs)
Australia: 342-9 (50 overs)

James Taylor and Chris Woakes (37) add 92 runs, off 84 balls, for the seventh wicket before the latter hits a Johnson delivery to Smith at mid-off.

Taylor meanwhile has completed his fifth ODI fifty. What an innings it has been.

Unfortunately for Taylor, it will count to a nought.

Starc returns to clean up Stuart Broad (0).
15:27

England: 141-6 (29 overs)
Australia: 342-9 (50 overs)

A stunning catch at short cover by Steven Smith cuts short Jos Buttler's (12) stay at the crease and helps Mitch Marsh to his maiden five-wicket haul.

Chris Woakes is the new man in. A single by Taylor, off Hazlewood, helps England reach the 100-run mark, in the 24th over of their innings.

Taylor and Woakes are putting together a good little partnership for the seventh over but it has come in a little too late in the day.
14:49

England: 73-5 (19 overs)
Australia: 342-9 (50 overs)

Marsh strikes twice in his third over to end all English hopes. He first has Ian Bell (36) caught by Starc at midwicket boundary.

And in the next ball he has Root (5) caught behind.

Eoin Morgan and James Taylor join forces with England in all sorts of trouble. And the captain can do little as Marsh strikes a fourth time, having him caught behind. A spectacular catch.
14:03

England: 50-2 (10 overs)
Australia: 342-9 (50 overs)

Australia make the first bowling change in the seventh over, Mitchell Johnson replacing Starc (3-1-10-1). He gives away just two runs first up.

The 10th over witnesses a second bowling change, Mitchell Marsh replacing Hazlewood (4-0-30-0).

Marsh strikes with his fourth ball, having Ballance (10) caught by Finch at short midwicket. Joe Root walks out to bat with England in trouble. A single from him helps England reach the 50-run mark.
14:02

England: 50-2 (10 overs)
Australia: 342-9 (50 overs)

Australia make the first bowling change in the seventh over, Mitchell Johnson replacing Starc (3-1-10-1). He gives away just two runs first up.

The 10th over witnesses a second bowling change, Mitchell Marsh replacing Hazlewood (4-0-30-0).

Marsh strikes with his fourth ball, having Ballance (10) caught by Finch at short midwicket. Joe Root walks out to bat with England in trouble. A single from him helps England reach the 50-run mark.
13:40

England: 29-1 (5 overs)
Australia: 342-9 (50 overs)

Moeen Ali and Ian Bell to open the batting for England and it will be Mitchell Starc to start for Australia. It's a maiden first up.

Josh Hazlewood to bowl the second over. He gives away five runs.

The first boundary of the England innings comes in the third over, Bell hitting Starc to the third man.

However, Starc strikes in his third over, having Ali (10) caught by Bailey at mid-on. Gary Ballance is the new man in.
12:50

Australia: 342-9 (50 overs)

Finn returns in the 46th over to account for Marsh (23), caught by Joe Root at long-off.

Marsh's 20-ball knock was inclusive of three boundaries and he helped Maxwell add 53 runs (off 42 balls) for the sixth wicket. The latter hits four successive boundaries in the over to complete his 10th ODI fifty.

A single by Brad Haddin, off Woakes, helps Australia get past the 300-run mark, in the 47th over.

Woakes ends with figures of one for 65. Broad, having conceded 11 in his final over, ends with two for 66. Anderson has had a poor day (0-67).

Maxwell and Haddin have added 50-plus runs for the seventh wicket in under four overs.

Finn gets his third wicket in the final over, having Haddin (31) caught by Broad at deep third man.

Haddin's 14-ball innings included five boundaries and he helped Maxwell add 61 (off 27 balls) for the seventh wicket. The latter (66) is also dismissed in the next ball, thanks to an excellent catch by Root.

And Finn completes a hat-trick by having Mitchell Johnson caught by Anderson at mid-off. He ends with figures of five for 71.

But Australia have piled up 342 for nine and it is going to be tough for England.
12:16

Australia: 281-5 (45 overs)

Broad is back in the attack in the 42nd over, replacing Ali (9-0-60-0). Maxwell hits the last two deliveries for successive boundaries.

Woakes replaces Finn (8-0-45-1) at the other end in the next over. Marsh hits the first ball past mid on for his first boundary. In Woakes next over, Marsh hits successive boundaries.

Anderson replaces Broad (9-0-55-2) next and bowls a good over, that is spoilt by a last ball boundary by Maxwell.

Maxwell and Marsh have now added more than 50 runs for the sixth wicket.
11:54

Australia: 237-5 (40 overs)

Glenn Maxwell joins his captain in the crease, with Australia well in control.

However, Bailey having played so well for his 55, plays a Finn delivery onto his stumps. Mitch Marsh replaces his captain at the crease in the 39th over.
11:42

Australia: 219-4 (37 overs)

In the opening match co-hosts New Zealand have thrashed Sri Lanka by 98 runs in Christchurch.

Back in Melbourne, Bailey has completed 2,000 ODI runs, at 57 matches the third fastest by an Australian batsman.

Australia manage 33 runs in the batting powerplay. More importantly, they don't lose a wicket.

Ali's seventh over, the 36th of the innings, is an expensive one, 16 runs coming off it, with Finch hitting a couple of boundaries and a six over midwicket. Australia get past the 200-run mark in the over.

Bailey takes three off Finn to complete his 15th ODI fifty. However, Finch (135) is run out in the over.

Finch's 128-ball innings was inclusive of 12 boundaries and three sixes and he helped his captain add 146 runs for the fourth wicket, making England pay heavily for their early blemish.
11:17

Australia: 176-3 (32 overs)

Australia take the batting powerplay in the 31st over, with the score on 161 for three. Finn to bowl.

Finch hits the first ball to the long leg boundary and that makes him the fourth Australian to score a hundred on his World Cup debut.

He celebrates the milestone with another boundary, one that also helps raise the 100-run partnership for the fourth wicket.
11:00

Australia: 156-3 (28 overs)

Spin is introduced in the 20th over, Moeen Ali replacing Finn (4-0-20-0) in the attack. He gives away just a single first up.

Finch gets his first six in the 23rd over, by Anderson, one that doesn't quite come off the middle of the bat.

Joe Root replaces Anderson (7-0-40-0) in the attack in the 25th over. Finch welcomes him with a boundary to long-on followed by a six.

Having conceded 11 in his only over, Root is replaced by Broad. To no avail though as Bailey finds the fence in the over, the shot helping Australia get past the 150-run mark.
10:28

Australia: 102-3 (18 overs)

A single off Woakes helps Finch to his seventh ODI fifty. A good innings under pressure, one in which he has taken advantage of getting dropped on nought.

Bailey takes three off Finn to help raise the Australian 100, in the 18th over.

Anderson replaces Woakes (5-0-19-1) in the attack in the 19th over.
10:07

Australia: 82-3 (14 overs)

England's first bowling change happens in the ninth over, Chris Woakes replacing Anderson (4-0-28-0). He gives away three runs first up.

Woakes strikes in his second over, making Smith (5) edge one onto his stumps. From 57 for no loss, suddenly it is 70 for three.

Meanwhile, in the other match in Christchurch, New Zealand is clearly on top.

George Bailey, the Australian captain, comes out to bat. He is not in the best of form.

And there's a second bowling change for England in the 12th over, Steven Finn replacing Broad (5-0-35-2). He gives away five runs first up.
09:44

Australia: 60-2 (9 overs)

A boundary by Finch, in Anderson's fourth over, helps raise the 50-run partnership for the opening wicket. Finch has 31 off them. Quite an achievement considering Warner is at the other end.

Against the run of play, Broad provides England the breakthrough.

In his fourth over, he gets one to swing and Warner (22) drags it onto his stumps.

Warner's 18-ball innings was inclusive of three boundaries and he helped Finch add 57 runs (off just 45 balls) for the opening wicket.

Shane Watson is the new man in. He survives just a ball, Broad having him caught behind.

Steven Smith comes out to bat. He survives the hat-trick ball.
09:22

Australia: 41-0 (5 overs)

Aaron Finch and David Warner open the batting for Australia and it will be James Anderson first up for England.

He is unlucky as Chris Woakes drops Finch (on nought) at midwicket in the fifth ball.

Stuart Broad to bowl the second over. He gives away just three runs first up. However, his second over is an expensive one, with Finch helping himself to a couple of boundaries.

Anderson too, is expensive in his third over, giving away 18 runs.
