Timeline  Refresh

There were some doubts over Ishant Sharma's fitness problem, but it seems he will be fit enough for the World Cup and was named in the squad.

"Ishant has a temporary injury but he is doing well. He was not advised to play in the current Test but he will be fit for the World Cup. He has some issues with his knee," BCCI secretary Sanjay Patel said.

For the tri-series, pacers Dhawal Kulkarni and Mohit Sharma are the back-up players.

So not many surprises in the World Cup except for Stuart Binny, who makes the cut as the seam bowling all-rounder.

India's have a host of spin options in R Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, while Suresh Raina and Rohit Sharma can also chip in with some useful overs.

The pace battery comprises of Ishant Sharma, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Mohammed Shami, Umesh Yadav with Binny expected to play a role with the ball.

The batting looks quite solid with Dhoni leading the way along with Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan, Ajinkya Rahane, Suresh Raina and Ambati Rayudu.

But never say never! Remember the last World Cup team, how Piyush Chawla was a surprise pick and came out of nowhere because the team management wanted a leg-spinner.

Former India opener Aakash Chopra on Twitter: "I'd be least surprised if Mohit or Binny are picked ahead of Aaron...just that I'm tempted to carry back-up for pace."

Haryana pacer Mohit Sharma might have done his chances of making it to the World Cup a lot better following his timely hat-trick against Delhi in the Ranji Trophy match in Lahli.

He took the wickets of overnight centurion Virender Sehwag, Parvinder Awana and Navdeep Saini. Check out the video courtesy of BCCI

14:24   Will Yuvraj make the cut?
Yuvraj Singh's brilliant domestic form will also weigh on the selectors. Punjab batsman Yuvraj, who was not selected in the preliminary list of 30 probables in December, has since come back into contention by striking three back-to-back hundreds against Haryana, Maharashtra and Saurashtra in the Ranji Trophy.

The hard-hitting left-hander, significantly the player of the tournament in the 2011 World Cup that was won by India and scorer of over 8000 runs from 293 ODIs, also got among the wickets with his left-arm spin on the placid track in the match against Saurashtra at Rajkot.

The selectors will go through the fitness report of Ravindra Jadeja, who is currently from a shoulder injury. He was forced to return from the ongoing Test series in Australia due to a shoulder injury and was replaced by Axar Patel.

But it seems he would be included in the World Cup squad as he is likely to recover by the month end in time for the mega-event.
14:20
While the debate about Yuvraj Singh's inclusion continues, Robin Uthappa has thrown his hat into the ring. He played a splendid knock of 156 for Karnataka on a difficult wicket against Jammu and Kashmir in the Ranji Trophy?

Will he get the nod for the World Cup?

Australia: 348-2 (90 overs)

The second new ball is due now...and is taken. An otherwise good over by Bhuvneshwar is poiled by last ball boundary by Smith.

Yadav replaces Shami (15-2-54-1) in the 86th over. Smith welcomes him with a boundary past backward point.

The Indian quicks fail to take advantage of the new ball, with Ashwin dropping Watson (on 57) at first slip, off Yadav, in what was the lone genuine chance.

Australia end the day comfortably placed at 348 for two, having added 106 runs in the third session.

Smith is batting on 82, and giving him company is Watson (on 61), the two having added 144 runs for the third wicket so far.

Day One has entirely belonged to Australia. And from the looks of it, Team India is in for more woes come Day Two.
11:13

Australia: 317-2

A single by Smith, off Ashwin, helps Australia get to the 300-run mark, in the 75th over.

A single by Smith, off Ashwin, brings forth the 100-run partnership for the third wicket.

Bhuvneshwar replaces Ashwin (28-5-88-1) in the attack in the 79th over, just after the drinks break. The new ball is dew shortly. He gives away two runs.

It's a twin change, with Shami replacing Raina (10-2-35-0). A couple by Watson helps him reach his 24th Test fifty, his second of the series.
10:33

Australia: 284-2

Bhuvneshwar Kumar to bowl the third over after the breather. Australia get past the 250-run mark in the over, courtesy a three by Watson.

Another boundary in that over, by Smith, helps raise the 50-run partnership for the third wicket.

After trying his three seamers, for an over each, from the Paddington End, Kohli hands the ball back to Raina. So it is spin from both ends now. Watson pulls him to the fence for his first boundary.

A single off Ashwin helps Smith reach his 10th Test fifty, his third against India.
10:12

Australia: 249-2

Welcome back, to the third and final session on Day One.

Ashwin to start the proceedings. Its a maiden.

Shami to bowl the second over, from the Paddington End. He gives away just a single.

Smith gets the first boundary off the session, in Ashwin's second over.
09:41

Australia: 242-2 (60 overs)

Smith starts off with a boundary off Ashwin. After 50 overs, Australia has made 215 for two.

Ashwin gets a break after 19 overs (19-4-55-1), and Suresh Raina comes in to bowl, in the 53rd over. Smith welcomes him with a boundary.

A boundary off Yadav takes Smith's total in the series to over 600 runs.

Bhuvneshwar replaces Yadav (12-1-70-0) in the 58th over. He gives away a single.

Australia reach 242 for two at the second break (60 overs), having added 119 (in 32 overs) in the second session.

Smith is unbeaten on 28 and Watson on 10, the two having added 38 runs for the third wicket.
08:53

Australia: 204-2

Shane Watson is the new man in.

However, it is a double blow for Australia as Shami gets past the defense of Rogers (95).

Captain Steven Smith comes out to bat. So two new batsmen at the crease. Chance for India.
08:46

Australia: 200-1

A boundary off Ashwin takes Rogers into the 90s. He has had four 50-plus scores before this, but failed to convert them into big knocks.

He follows it up with a single that takes Australia to 200, in the 45th over.

However, the over also ends India's wait for a wicket, Ashwin having Warner (101) caught by Vijay at gully.

Warner's 114-ball knock was inclusive of 16 hits to the fence and he helped Rogers add 200 runs for the opening wicket.
08:45

Australia: 200-1

A boundary off Ashwin takes Rogers into the 90s. He has had four 50-plus scores before this, but failed to convert them into big knocks.

He follows it up with a single that takes Australia to 200, in the 45th over.

However, the over also ends India's wait for a wicket, Ashwin having Warner (101) caught by Vijay at gully.

Warner's 114-ball knock was inclusive of 16 hits to the fence and he helped Rogers add 200 runs for the opening wicket.
08:32

Australia: 189-0

A boundary past mid-on, off Bhuvneshwar, gets Warner to the 90s. Another boundary, in front of square, takes him to 95.

He gets to his 12th Test hundred with a boundary off Kumar. His conversion rate seems to be getting better.

It is his fourth Test hundred against India, and third in this series, after having scored 145 and 102 in the two innings in the first Test in Adelaide. His other ton (180) came at the WACA in 2012.
08:20

Australia: 173-0

Bhuvneshwar Kumar replaces an expensive Yadav (8-0-55-0) in the attack in the 34th over. Rogers welcomes him with a boundary straight past.

Another boundary off the last ball, between extra cover and mid-off, helps the Australian total past the 150-run mark.

With his front line bowlers proving expensive, Kohli is looking clueless.

Even Ashwin is going for runs now, his 12th over costing India 13 runs, Warner using the reverse sweep to good effect against him.
07:55

Australia: 142-0

Welcome back to the afternoon session. Shami to bowl. He gives away three runs.

Yadav to bowl the second over. The only scoring shot in the over is a boundary through cover, by Rogers.

Ashwin is back, replacing Shami (7-0-34-0) in the 31st over. He gives away three runs.

Warner helps himself to successive boundaries in Yadav's second over.
07:02

Australia: 123-0 (28 overs)

A boundary over extra cover by Warner, off Ashwin, helps Australia get past the 100-run mark, in just 20th over.

Shami replaces Bhuvneshwar (8-0-30-0) in the attack in the 25th over. Rogers welcomes him with a boundary behind point.

A single off Ashwin helps Rogers reach his 10th Test fifty, his fifth on the trot. Australia reach 123 for no loss at lunch (28 overs).

Warner is unbeaten on 63, and Rogers on 52.
06:28

Australia: 97-0

Yadav's sixth over is an expensive one, Warner hitting three boundaries in succession. Stand and deliver seems to be mantra for the in-form opener.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar replaces an expensive Yadav (6-0-42-0) in the 19th over. A couple off his first ball helps Warner reach his 14th Test fifty, his third against India, coming off just 46 balls.

He also has 11 centuries in his 36-match career.
06:16

Australia: 80-0

Change of ends for Yadav, replacing Bhuvneshwar (5-0-23-0) in the 11th over. He gives away a single.

Shami, who started off well, is erratic in his fourth over and is punished. Warner hits the first ball through extra cover for his fourth boundary. Two balls later, Rogers smashes it in front of square for his fifth boundary.

Australia dominate the first hour of play, reaching 72 without loss (after 13 overs). Spin is introduced immediately after, R Ashwin replacing Shami (4-0-24-0). Three runs off his first over.
05:42

Australia: 51-0

Yadav gives away 11 in his second and Rogers hits a wonderful drive straight past the bowler, in Bhuvneshwar's third.

With both Bhuvneshwar and Yafav proving expensive, captain Kohli is forced to make his first bowling change early, Mohammed Shami replacing Yadav (2-0-18-0) in the sixth over.

He starts off with a beauty to Warner but the batsman manages a boundary two balls later, a streaky edge to the third man.

Shami is unfortunate in his second over as KL Rahul puts down Rogers (on 19) at second slip. The batsman expresses his gratitude by hitting the next ball to the deep point fence, the shot helping raise the Australian fifty, in the eighth over.
05:16

Australia: 22-0

Chris Rogers and David Warner to open the batting for Australia and it will be Bhuvneshwar Kumar first up for India. He gives away six runs first up.

Umesh Yadav to bowl the second over. He gives away seven runs, with Warner finding the fence.

Rogers gets his first boundary in the first ball of Kumar's second over, a drive between point and gully. He gets his second four balls later.
05:04
