World Cup Live: Dhawan ton helps India maintain their unbeaten run

Riding high on a brilliant century from Shikhar Dhawan and a timely half-century from Rohit Sharma, India beat Ireland by 8 wickets at Seddan Park.

After restricting Ireland to 259, Indian openers put on 174 runs for the opening wicket. 

Stuart Thompson made the breakthrough when he removed Rohit Sharma for 64. 

But a half-century stand between Ajinkya Rahane and Virat Kohli ensured that India closed the game with 79 balls to spare.

Alex Cusack comeback for another spell as Virat Kohli hits one through long-on for a single. 

Ajinkya Rahane keeps the strike rotating with another single. 

Kohli then cuts one through point and gully region to collect a boundary. 

After 34 overs, India were 235-2. Kohli is on 32, while Rahane is on 22. India need 24 runs for victory.

Shikhar Dhawan smashed a 84-ball century to put India in cruise control in the chase. 

Dhawan rode on his luck as he was dropped thrice as he smashed the bowlers to all corners of the park to score his second century of the tournament. 


Dhawan reached the landmark with a single off Stuart Thompson. 

The southpaw was however dismissed after he skied one to William Porterfield off Thompson in the same over. 

India were 191-2 after 28 overs.

Rohit looking to run one down towards the third man area, chopped one back on to his stumps, thus ending a brilliant 174 runs stand between him and Dhawan.

Rohit Sharma completes yet another half-century with a maximum off Paul Stirling in just 49 balls.

This is a welcome return to form for Rohit Sharma, who has been struggling in this World Cup. 

Meanwhile, Dhawan is going strong, looking good for yet another century of the tournament.  

Kevin O'Brien was welcomed to the crease with a huge six by Dhawan. O'Brien corrected his line as Indians were more than happy to collect single. 

The duo completed 150 runs stand in just 127 balls. At the end of 21 overs, India were 152-0. 

Dhawan is on 78 off just 67 balls, while Rohit is on 60 off 59 balls.

India need 108 runs from 29 overs.

Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan are making quick work of the chase of 260. Dhawan has looked the aggressive of the two batsmen, with couple of chip shots and fearsome cut shots. 

Indians have also benefited by some poor bowling as the duo has hit some big sixes already. 

Dhawan reached the landmark with a single off Paul Stirling, which included three boundaries and three sixes. 

After reaching his half-century, Dhawan smashed a six and a boundary as India were 121-0 after 17 overs.

Dhawan is on 61, while Rohit is on 46.

Rohit was severe on John Mooney as he smashed him for a six and a boundary. 

Dhawan then hit Alex Cusack for consecutive boundaries. Cusack tightened his line as India were 44-0 after 8 overs. 

Dhawan is on 19, while Rohit is on 23.

Mohammad Shami got the big fish for India as he had Naill O' Brien walking back after he hit one straight to Umesh Yadav. 

O'Brien looking for the short boundary, flicked one to Yadav, who was stationed at backward square leg. He made 75, which included seven boundaries and three sixes. 

Ireland have lost at regular intervals for their liking.


Stuart Thompson too was on his way after he was run out for 2. 

John Mooney hit one to off side and called for a single before sending Thompson back. 

Virat Kohli, who was at covers, shattered the stumps directly to find Thompson short of his crease. 

Ireland were 227-8 after 43 overs.

Mohammad Shami strikes in his comeback spell as he had dangerous Kevin O'Brien for 1. 

O'Brien was undone by a gentle outswinger as he edged it to MS Dhoni. 


Ravindra Jadeja then struck at the other end as Gary Wilson succumbed to a reverse sweep. 

Wanting to clear the in-field, Wilson, top-edged one to Ajinkya Rahane, who dived to his left to complete the catch. 

Ireland were 222-6 after 21.2 overs. Naill O'Brien is on 73 and he is joined by Stuart Thompson.

R Ashwin back into the attack now in the batting Power Play. Naill O'Brien gets a single off the first ball. 

Andy Balbirnie sweeps one for a single. 


O'Brien chips down the track and smashes it over the ropes for a maximum to complete his 14th ODI half-century.

However, Ashwin provides a timely wicket as Balbirnie was caught by Mohammad Shami for 24. 

Balbirnie looking to sweep one from outside off stump top-edged it, which also ended the partnership of 61 runs. 

Ireland were 206-4 after 39 overs.

Courtesy off a half-century partnership between Nail O'Brien and William Porterfield, Ireland have revived their innings after quick wickets dented their progress. 


Ireland were off to a great start with Porterfield and Paul Stirling putting on 89 runs for the opening wicket, before spinners put a break on their scoring. 

But just as we speak, Mohit Sharma strikes for India as he removes Porterfield for 67.

The Irish skipper chipped down the track, only to get a leading edge and was caught by Umesh Yadav at long off.

Porterfield gave the team an ideal start, before dropping the anchor with wickets falling around him.
