World Cup: Sarfaraz's ton knocks Ireland out of World Cup

A brilliant century from opener Sarfaraz Ahmed helped Pakistan cruise to a convincing seven wickets win over Ireland. 

The loss means West Indies made it to the quarter-finals as the fourth team. 

Chasing 238 for victory, Pakistan got off to a rollicking start as openers put on a 120 runs for the opening wicket. 

Ahmed Shehzad made a vital 63, before he played an uncharacteristic shot to be dismissed by Stuart Thompson. 

Haris Sohail was run out for 3. But Misbah and Sarfaraz put on 82 runs to ensure Pakistan has a safe passage in the chase. 

Sarfaraz reached the landmark with a boundary off George Dockrell in just 120 balls. 

Umar Akmal finished the game off with a boundary off Paul Stirling.

Misbah ul Haq had one of the most rarest of dismissals -- getting hit wicket off the bowling of Alex Cusak. 

Misbah went to play a defensive shot, only to have his feet touch the off stump. 

Pakistan were 208-3 after 39 overs. Sarfaraz is closing in on a century and is batting on 91, while Umar Akmal is yet to open his account.

Misbah dabs one towards third man to collect an easy single. 

Sarfaraz keeps the strike rotating for another single.

Barely after a couple of overs after Ahmed Shehzad was dismissed, Ireland managed to send Haris Sohail too on his way back after he was involved in a mix up with Sarfaraz Ahmed. 

Sarfaraz dropped one and was called for a single by Sohail, who was at the non-strikers end. 

But Sarfaraz stops in middle with Sohail more than half in the middle of the pitch. 

Andy Balbirine's fearsome throw is on the mark as Dockrell removes the bails  much to the delight for Irish fielders.

Ireland were 134-2 after 26 overs. Sarfaraz is on 63 and he is joined the middle by skipper Misabh ul Haq, who is on 1.

Stuart Thompson finally strikes for Ireland as he removes Ahmed Shehzad for 63. 

Shehzad, who was looking good for a century, played an uncharacteristic shot to be caught by Ed Joyce at mid-on. 

Shehzad's knock included seven hits to the fence.

Pakistan, courtesy of a century stand have taken full control of the match. Ahmed Shehzad, who hit the half-century earlier, was joined by Sarfaraz Ahmed who smashed his second half-century of the tournament.

Ireland bowlers have failed to penetrate the defence of Pakistan batsmen and looking knock off the remaining runs quickly. 

At the end of 22 overs, Pakistan were 116-0.

Its been a brilliant opening stand between Ahmed Shehzad and Sarfaraz Ahmed as the duo has put Pakistan in the ascendancy in the chase. 

Chasing 238 for win, the duo has already put on 96 runs stand for the opening wicket. 

Shehzad has looked the most aggressive off the two with some lusty blows of Kevin O'Brien.

A combined effort from Pakistan pacers have dismissed Ireland for 237 after they elected to bat first in Adelaide. 

Ireland rode on a century from skipper William Porterfield but he failed to get any support from the other end. 

Ireland kept losing wickets at regular intervals, which meant that they didn't have enough firepower for the final flourish. 

For Pakistan Sohail Khan and Rahat Ali picked up two wickets apiece. Wahab Riaz was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 3-54.

Pakistan pacers have pressed hard on Ireland batsmen and they have succumbed to the pressure as Associate nation lost two quick wickets. 

After dismissing William Porterfield, Sohail Khan struck for Pakistan as he removed Gary Wilson for 29. 

Wilson, who was looking to make the most of the Power Play was caught by Wahab Riaz at third man boundary.

Skipper William Porterfield is leading from the front with a brilliant 124-ball century. 

Ireland, who have to win this match in order to make it to the quarter-finals, are giving Pakistan a good run of their money. 

Porterfield reached the landmark, his eight in ODIs, with a single off Rahat Ali. 

His innings included 11 boundaries and one six. 

But just as speak, Porterfield is on his way back after lobbing a  simple catch to Shahid Afridi at mid on.

Just when the Andy Balbirnie and William Porterfield were looking to dominate Pakistan bowling, Haris Sohail strikes for Pakistan. 

Sohail who was just brought in made an immediate impact as he had Balbirnie walking back for 18. 

The right-hander, looking to sweep Sohail, got a top-edge and was easily caught at fine-leg by Shahid Afridi. 

Ireland were 136-4 after 30 overs. Porterfield is on 84 along with Gary Wilson, who is yet to open his account.

Wiliam Porterfield and Andy Balbirnie have steadied the ship after two quick wickets threatened to hamper Ireland's progress. 

Porterfield, who has already completed his half-century is looking to carry on the innings, while Balbirnie is the one who is looking to play some attacking cricket. 

Young Eshan Adil has been impressive with his line and lengths and has created problems for batsmen. 

Porterfield caresses one through the off-side for a couple.

William Porterfield's good run in the World Cup continues as he strikes yet another half-century. 

Porterfield who has been in good knick reached the landmark in 59 balls as he caressed one through the off side for the boundary.

But Rahat Ali strikes for Pakistan as he had Naill O'Brien walking back for 12. 

O'Brien looking to hit one on the up was caught by Umar Akmal at short cover. 

Ireland were 88-3 after 17 overs. Porterfield is on 55 and he is joined by Andy Balbirinie who is on 2

Jason Holder and Jerome Taylor demolished UAE batting as West Indies kept their hopes alive with a convincing six wickets win in Napier. 

Holder picked up 4-27, while Taylor picked up 3-36 as West Indies dismissed UAE for 175. 

Later on in the chase, West Indies did stutter by cruised home with 117 balls to spare. 

Johnson Charles top scored for West Indies 55, while Jonathan Carter made an unbeaten 50. 

Now all will depend on the crucial Ireland and Pakistan match. If Ireland beat Pakistan or even if the match ends in a tie, Ireland would be through.

Rahat Ali now being introduced into the attack. Ali has been impressive in this World Cup as he starts off with a dot delivery. 

He almost had his first wicket only for Ahmed Shehzad to let one go at point. 

Joyce cut fearsomly towards point, but Shehzad dropped a relatively simple chance. 

William Porterfield meanwhile, continued his boundary hitting spree as he pulled Ali for a boundary through square leg. 

Porterfield then scooped one in the air, luckily for him the ball fell short of the fielder.

At the end of 8 overs Ireland were 35-1. Porterfield is on 25, while Joyce is on 6

Stirling was undone by a straighter one as he played all over it and was adjudged leg-before-wicket.

The big news of the day is that Mohammad Irfan is out of this game -- injured, while Younis Khan has been dropped due to poor form.

Haris Sohail replaces Younis, while Ehsan Adil replaces Irfan.
