South Africa thrash Sri Lanka by nine wickets, with a whopping 32 overs to spare and break their 'knockout jinx'.

Mathews is left to eat his words. He said at the toss that SA will feel the heat.

A commanding performance by SA in every which way. They dominated the hapless Lankans. Spare a thought for Sanga, Mahela and Dilshan - all playing their final match in the World Cup.

That's all for the day. Goodbye.

Scorecard:

South Africa: 100-1 (14 overs)
Sri Lanka: 133 (37.2 overs)

A single off Chameera helps De Kock complete a well deserved half century, his fifth in ODIs, coming off just 39 balls.

After struggling with the bat in the group phase, the South African is back among runs.

A single by Du Plessis, off Kaushal, helps raise the South African hundred, in the 14th over. It's the fastest 100 in this World Cup for SA. Lanka had made their slowest, in more than double the overs.

Scorecard:

South Africa: 79-1 (12 overs)
Sri Lanka: 133 (37.2 overs)

Tharindu Kaushal continues, giving away just a sigle in his second over.

A three by De Kock, off a Malinga no ball, helps SA reach the 50-run mark, in the ninth over. The Proteas reach 61 for one after the first 10 overs.

Dushmantha Chameera replaces an expensive and ineffective Malinga (5-0-32-1) in the attack in the 11th over. De Kock welcomes him with successive boundaries.

Sri Lanka: 133 (37.2 overs)

Dilshan (1-0-2-0) is taken off after just one over. Nuwan Kulasekara to bowl the fourth over instead. De Kock helps himself to successive boundaries, three in four in fact, as 13 runs come off the over.

The young batsman also drives Malinga past point for another boundary.

Kula (1-0-13-0) is taken off after just one over. Tharindu Kaushal replaces him. He gives away five runs first up.

Malinga strikes in his fourth over, having Amla (on 16) caught by Kulasekara at deep third man. South Africa go into the break at 40 for one, needing 94 runs in 43.2 overs.

Steyn gets another spell, in the 30th over, replacing the very impressive Tahir (7-0-24-2).

However, Morkel (6-1-21-0) is taken off at the other end, Duminy replacing him. He gives away just two runs.

The change works, Duminy having Mathews (19) caught by Du Plessis at short midwicket.

Sri Lanka: 93-3 (27 overs)

Mahela Jayawardene joins Sanga at the crease. So we have the two most experienced at the crease, at a very crucial juncture.

Mahela survives a big appeal, and review, off Tahir, when on two. However, his luck doesn't last long, Tahir having him caught by Du Plessis at short midwicket in his next over.

Angelo Mathews is the new man in. The captain has an uphill task ahead of him.

A beautiful drive by Thirimanne, off Abbott, ensures the first boundary of the Sri Lankan innings, in the sixth over. The second comes in the next ball, another beautiful drive.

A bowling change for SA in the seventh over, Morne Morkel replaces Steyn (3-1-5-1), the latter having some stiffness at the back. He gives away two runs first up.

08:37
Good morning and welcome to the live coverage of the first quarter-final of the World Cup between South Africa and Sri Lanka in Sydney.

Angelo Mathews has won the toss and Sri Lanka will bat first.

"We look to put the runs on the board," reasons the Lanka captain. His opposite number, AB de Villiers, tries to put up a brave face.

"Probably, yes (batted first). But we are prepared to face anything," he says.

SA have a pathetic record in the knock out stage. Can they turn the tide today?
