Captain Hashim Amla walks out to bat with his team in a spot of bother.

The wicket is turning and this is only the first day. South Africa have to bat really well to get something out of this disappointing wicket.

Aaron is off after just one over. And we have a third spinner operating, in Amit Mishra. Amla welcomes him with a boundary, left of mid-off.

Mishra is taken off after one over, and Aaron is back.

South Africa end Day One on 28 for two (20 overs), trailing by 173 runs.

Elgar is batting on 13 and with him is Amla (on nine).

Philander persisted with his plan for Jadeja, and was rewarded in the end.

Umesh Yadav is the new man in. He starts off with a boundary, the shot taking India to the 200-run mark, in the 67th over.

However, Yadav's innings is shortlived, Tahir getting past his defence soon enough.

Tahir repeats the feat with Varun Aaron two balls later.

India 201 all out. The South African bowlers have nullified the toss loss.
15:19
Scorecard:

India: 196-8

First bowling change of the final session is effected in the 60th over, Vernon Philander replacing Tahir (5-1-16-0). It's a maiden.

Changes of ends for Tahir, replaces Steyn (11-3-30-0) in the 61st over. Just two runs off it.

Jadeja and Ashwin are frustrating the South Africans now, having added 42 for the eighth wicket.

Just as we say this Philander, after being denied thrice, finally gets Jadeja (38) out leg before.
14:40
Scorecard:

India: 173-7

Welcome back for the opening day's final session.

The visitors have dominated so far. Let's see how the final session goes. Imran Tahir to begin the proceedings. Three off it.

14:14
Scorecard:

India: 168-7

Elgar is back, replacing Harmer (14-1-51-1) in the 51st over. And he strikes with his fifth ball, having Mishra (6) caught by Steyn at mid-on.

R Ashwin is the new man in. India risk being bowled out under 200, and that will be a shame, considering Kohli won the toss.

Rabada helps himself to his second wicket, having Ashwin out leg before. Oh! wait. It is a no-ball.

Ashwin survives.

India reach 168 for seven at tea (55 overs).

Jadeja is unbeaten on 26, and Ashwin on four.

The second session witnessed India scoring 86 runs (in 28 overs). Crucially though, they lost four wickets.
13:47
Scorecard:

India: 153-6

Amit Mishra is the new man in.

The idea of going in with six batsmen has cost India dear in this match.

Despite getting a vital wicket (Vijay) Harmer has struggled to find his range. And he is struggling against the tail as well.

Both Jadeja and Mishra hit boundaries in his 14th over, the latter's hit taking the home team past the 150-run mark..

Amla is going for the kill here. He has brought in Rabada, replacing Tahir (3-0-12-0) in the 50th over, in an attempt to polish off the tail before tea.
13:34
Scorecard:

India: 140-6

It's not very surprising that the Indian batsmen are playing the regular spinner (Harmer) quite well, but struggling against the part-timer (Elgar).

Still no Imran Tahir for South Africa though.

Just as we say this, South Africa's lead spinner is handed the ball, replacing Elgar (5-1-16-3) in the 44th over. Just two off his first over. But seven come off his second, all off Vijay's blade.

Vijay's extravagance costs him his wicket, Harmer finally get a reward for his hard work, having the batsman out leg before.

Vijay's 136-ball 75 was inclusive of a dozen hits to the fence.
13:14
Scorecard:

India: 116-5

New batsman Ravindra Jadeja avoids the hat-trick.

A boundary towards third man helps Vijay complete his 12th Test fifty, his second against South Africa. What a resolute innings it has been.

He celebrates his feat with a boundary apiece of Elgar and Harmer.

India get to 116 for five after 41 overs. Time for drinks.
13:05
Scorecard:

India: 102-5

Wriddiman Saha joins Vijay at the crease with the home team in all sorts of trouble.

He doesn't last long, becoming Elgar's third victim, again caught by Amla at first slip.
13:01
Scorecard:

India: 102-4

Philander and Steyn have kept things tight since resumption. The first seven overs in the second session have produced just 10 runs.

The first bowling change happens in the eighth over of the session, Harmaer replacing Steyn (9-3-22-0). Rahane despatches the third ball to the fence.

A single by Rahane, off Harmer, helps India reach the 100-run mark, in the 37th over.

Dean Elgar is again introduced, replacing Philander (11-4-24-1) in the 38th over. He strikes again, breaking what was turning out to be a vital partnership, having Rahane (15) caught by Amla at first slip.
12:19
Scorecard:

India: 90-3

Welcome back after lunch.

Philander to bowl. Rahane to face. A misfield by Tahir gifts Rahane a boundary off the last ball.

Steyn to bowl the second over. Vijay welcomes him with a boundary through covers. That's the lone scoring shot in the over.
11:34
Scorecard:

India: 82-3

Elgar (2-1-3-1) has done his job, and is replaced by Harmer in the 26th over. Vijay welcomes back the spinner with a boundary.

At lunch, India has managed to reach 82 for three (27 overs).

Murali Vijay is unbeaten on 40, and giving him company is Rahane (on three).

The day's opening session has clearly belonged to South Africa, with the visitors taking three vital wickets.
11:20
Scorecard:

India: 70-3

Apologies, it was Elgar who took out Pujara, and not Harmer as mentioned previously.

The part-timer has put South Africa back into the game.

Kohli's dismissal was a disappointment for sure, coming off a leading edge.
11:16
Scorecard:

India: 69-3

So it wasn't a very 'happy birthday' for Virat Kohli after all.

The Indian captain survived just four balls before a leading edge off Rabada was comfortably taken by Dean Elgar, at cover.

Ajinkya Rahane replaces his captain at the crease. He starts off with a boundary.
11:12
Scorecard:

India: 65-3

Virat Kohli, the birthday boy, is the new man in.

The Indian captain doesn't last long, becoming Rabada's first Test wicket, Elgar taking the catch at short mid-on.
11:06
Scorecard:

India: 63-2

After 20 overs, the home side have reached 60 for one. Both Vijay and Pujara are looking increasingly comfortable on a wicket that has nothing for the bowlers.

Against the run of play, Harmer strikes having Pujara (31) out leg before.

Pujara's 66-ball innings was inclusive of six hits to the fence, and he helped Vijay add 63 runs for the second wicket.
10:54
Scorecard:

India: 55-1

Welcome back after the drinks break. It's a second straight bowling change for South Africa.

Debutant Kagiso Rabada replaces Philander (6-2-17-1) in the attack in the 14th over. Pujara gets his fourth boundary, wide of gully, in the over's third ball.

A boundary by Pujara, off Harmer, helps India get past the 50-run mark, in the 17th over. The shot also helps raise the 50-run partnesrhip for the second wicket.
10:30
Scorecard:

India: 38-1

After 10 overs, India have managed 24 for one. Both Vijay and Pujara have settled down well.

More importantly, Steyn and Philander aren't getting any purchase from the wicket.

South Africa make their first bowling change in the 13th over, Simon Harmer replacing Steyn (6-2-17-0). Vijay hits the fourth ball wide of mid-on for a boundary.
10:02
Scorecard:

India: 18-1

Cheteshwar Pujara is the new man in. He starts off with a boundary towards mid-off, the same also happens to be the first runs for India.

Vijay also gets his first runs courtesy a boundary, but it's a cheeky shot that flies over the gully fielder.

Pujara gets into his groove, first with a nice flick off Steyn that goes wide of the midwicket fielder and then gets a 'lucky' boundary off Philander.
09:38
Scorecard:

India: 0-1

Murali Vijay and Shikhar Dhawan to open the batting for India and it will be Dale Steyn first up for the visitors. It's a maiden.

It's Vernon Philander next. He strikes early, having Dhawan caught by Amla at first slip.

Dhawan failed to open his account.
09:16
Rohit Sharma, Lokesh Rahul and Bhuvneshwar Kumar miss out for India.

Ishant Sharma obviously is out.

For South Africa, we have Vernon Philanader and spinner Simon Harmer in the squad. Morne Morkel is out injured. So we have Kagiso Rabada making his debut.
