Kanpur ODI! India fall short by five runs, SA take 1-0 lead

A six of Steyn takes Rohit to 148, and raises the 50-run partnership for the fourth wicket. 

Tahir (10-0-57-2) strikes twice in his final over, first having Rohit (150) caught and bowled and then having Raina (3) caught by Duminy at long on.  

India require 11 off the last over. Rabada to bowl. He strikes with his fourth ball, catching Dhoni (31) off his own bowling. 

Binny (2) perishes in the next ball, caught by Amla.

India manage only 298 for seven. South Africa win by five runs.

Bowling change. Rabada replaces Steyn (8-0-32-1) in the 42nd over. 10 runs come off the over with Rohit finding the fence. 

South Africa miss a great run out chance as De Kock somehow fluffs an opportunity to run Dhoni out. 

A six by Rohit, off Morkel, helps India get past the 250-run mark, in the 45th over.

Steyn's perseverance pays off and he has Virat Kohli (11) caught by Morkel at short fine leg. 

Captain MS Dhoni joins a rampant Rohit at the crease, the latter easing the pressure with a huge six over midwicket off Tahir.

South Africa: 303-5 (50 overs)

Against the run of play, Behardien picks up a wicket, having Rahane (60) caught by Miller at extra cover. 

Rahane's 82-ball innings was inclusive of five boundaries and he helped Rohit add 149 runs (off 157 balls) for the second wicket. 

Virat Kohli is the new man in. 

A boundary off Behardien helps Rohit complete his eighth ODI hundred, his first against South Africa and his third this year.

Another single off his blade helps raise the Indian 200, in thae 36th over of the innings.

South Africa: 303-5 (50 overs)

A boundary off Behardien, by Rahane, helps raise the 100-run partnership for the second wicket, one that has come off just 120 balls. 

A single by Rahane, off Tahir, helps India get to the 150-run mark, in the 28th over.

A single off Tahir helps Rahane complete his 11th ODI fifty, his second against South Africa.

Rohit and Rahane are frustrating the South Africans now, while making it easy for India.

The second wicket partnership is closing in on the three-figure mark. And the visitors seem clueless at the moment. 

It is good going for the home side.

Ajinkya Rahane is the new man in.  Rohit eases successive boundaries off Morkel to ease the pressure. 

JP Duminy is handed the ball in the 11th over, replacing Rabada (4-0-23-0). He gives away six runs first up. Rabada, meanwhile replaces Morkel (2-0-11-1) at the other end. 

Rohit helps himslef to a boundary in the over before hoisting Duminy for a huge six over long-on. 

A single by Rahane, off Morkel, helps raise the 50-run stand for the second wicket. India reach 94 for one at the first drinks break (after 16 overs).

Imran Tahir is introduced immediately after. Rohit hits a boundary in the over to reach 49. 

He duly completes his 27th ODI fifty - only his second against South Africa - with the boundary off Morkel. He celebrates it with another boundary.

South Africa: 303-5 (50 overs)

An expensive Steyn (3-0-15-0) is replaced by Farhaan Behardien in the seventh over. Rohit welcomes the new bowler with a boundary through point. Three balls later, Rohit gets another boundary past short third man. 

It's twin bowling change, with Morne Morkel replacing Rabada (3-0-17-0) in the eighth over. He strikes with his third ball having the dangerous-looking Dhawan (23) out leg before.

Dhawan's 28-ball innings was inclusive of five boundaries, and he helped Rohit add 42 for the opening wicket.

South Africa: 303-5 (50 overs)

Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan to open the batting for India and it will be Dale Steyn first up for SA. Five off the over, with Dhawan finding the fence. 

Kagiso Rabada to bowl the second over. He gives away only one. However, Dhawan gets his second boudary in Rabada's second over. 

Dhawan gets a couple of boundaries in Steyn's third over and another in Rabada's third.

South Africa: 303-5 (50 overs)

At the end of the 47th over, the visitors have reached 250 for five. They get another 13 in the 48th over, Behardien finding the fence twice in that Yadav over. 

The penultimate over of the innings, by Kumar (10-0-67-0) fetches South Africa another 19 runs, with De Villiers hitting successive sixes and a boundary. 

Yadav to bowl the final over of the innings. Behardien hits successive boundaries off the first two balls, followed by a six off the third.

And De Villiers ends it with a six, one that not only helps him complate his 21st ODI Ton - his fourth against India - but also takes the South African total past 300 (303 for five). 

This is the highest ever total in Kanpur, with SA getting 109 off their final 10 overs. 

Behardien remains unbeaten on 35, having helped De Villiers (104) add 65runs (off just 29 balls) for the sixth wicket.

South Africa: 240-5 (46 overs)

Amit Mishra ends his spell with decent figures (10-0-47-2). 

Ashwin (4.4-0-14-1) has gone off the field again and Binny replaces him. JP smashes the second ball over square leg for a six.

AB then switches gear, first with a boundary, followed by a huge six over long on. AB ends the over with another boundary as 21 runs comes off the over spoiling the analysis for Binny (8-0-63-0).

However, Umesh Yadav returns to have Duminy (15) caught behind. 

Duminy, dismissed for the first time on this tour, helped his captain add 41 runs (off 28 balls) for the fifth wicket.

South Africa: 209-4 (42 overs)

Mishra replaces Binny (7-0-42-0) in the 41st over. He strikes with his third ball, having Miller (13) stumped. Miller helped AB add 45 runs for the fourth wicket.

JP Duminy joins his captain at the crease for the final stretch. A single by him helps SA reach the 200-run mark, in the 41st over.

A couple off Kumar helps De Villiers complete his 48th ODI fifty, his sixth against India.

South Africa: 194-3 (40 overs)

Raina is back, replacing Mishra (9-0-41-1) in the 35th over. De Villiers ends the over with a massive six over deep midwicket.

Ashwin is back on the field. News is he can bowl from 11.55 am onwards.

Binny continues and De Villiers smashes him for a huge six over midwicket.

South Africa: 154-3 (34 overs)

Amit Mishra has a change of ends, replacing Raina (6-0-27-0) in the 29th over. He gives away four runs. 

During his fourth over, Ashwin hurts himself while driving and is forced off the field. Kohli completes the over. 

A single by Du Plessis, in Mishra's ninth over - the 33rd of the innings, helps South Africa reach the 150-run mark.

Umesh Yadav is handed the ball in the 34th over. He strikes first ball, having Du Plessis (62) out leg before. 

Du Plessis' 77-ball innings was inclusive of five hits to the fence and one over it, and helped his captain add 48 runs for the third wicket.

David Miller is the new mn in. He gets off the mark with a couple.

South Africa: 134-2 (28 overs)

A lucky boundary off Mishra, and a huge six off Raina over midwicket, helps Du Plessis complete his 17th ODI fifty, his third against India. 

What an innings it has been?

Ashwin replaces Mishra (6-0-28-1) in the attack in the 28th over. He gives away five runs.

South Africa: 113-2 (25 overs)

However, just when things seemed to be settling for South Africa, Amit Mishra manages to breach Amla's (37) defenses. 

Amla's 59-ball innings was inclusive of three boundaries and he helped Du Plessis add 59 runs for the second wicket. The wicket has come against the run of play.

Captain AB de Villiers is the new man in. Du Plessis eases the pressure with a boundary off Raina.

South Africa: 104-1 (23 overs)

Amla and Du Plessis are combining well here for the visitors. Their second wicket stand has put India in concern. 

Dhoni has so far not got the wickets he hoped for.

South Africa: 101-1 (22 overs)

Suresh Raina replaces Mishra (3-0-14-0) in the attack in the 17th over. Amla (on 28) almost gets himslef bowled in the over. India 82 for one (17 overs) at the first drinks break. 

A single by Du Plessis, off Binny, ensures the 50-run partnership for the second wicket. The runs have come in quick time as well. 

Mishra replaces Binny (5-0-24-0) in the attack in the 22nd over. A single by Du Plessis, off the third ball, helped raise the South African 100.

South Africa: 75-1 (15 overs)

After 10 overs, the visitors have reached 48 for one. 

Ashwin, playing in his 100th ODI, is replaced after just one over, by Amit Mishra. Just one off his first over. 

Another bowling change happens in the 12th over, Stuart Binny replacing Kumar (5-0-21-0). A single by Amla helps SA reach the 50-run mark in the over. 

Amla (on 18) almost hits one back to Mishra, in the latter's second over. Du Plessis helps himself to a boundary in the over. 

Binny's second over is an expensive one, 12 coming off it, with Du Plessis helping himslef to a couple of boundaries.

Amla gets his third in Mishra's third over.

South Africa: 45-1 (9 overs)

With the seamers failing to make the breakthrough, Dhoni is forced to introduce spin. Ashwin replaces Kumar (4-0-18-0) in the ninth over. 

The change works, Ashwin having De Kock (29) caught by Raina at slip off his fourth ball. 

De Kock's 33-ball knock was inclusive of five boundaries and he helped Amla add 45 for the opening wicket. 

Fafa du Plessis is the new man in.

South Africa: 34-0

De Kock (on 8) survives a run out attempt by Kohli in the fourth over. Kumar's third over, the fifth of the innings, earns De Kock and South Africa their second boundary. The third comes in the same over, in the next ball to be precise.

Amla gets his first boundary in Yadav's third over. His second comes in Kumar's fourth over.

Hashim Amla and Quinton de Kock to open the batting for Soouth Africa while it is will be Bhuvneshwar Kumar first up for the home side. Five runs come off the first over. 

Umesh Yadav to bowl the second over. De Kock hits the first ball to the midwicket fence.
