Mumbai 188-4 (19.1 ovs) vs KKR 187-4 | SCORECARD

Captain Rohit Sharma led the way with the bat with a splendid innings of 84 not out from 54 balls to steer Mumbai Indians to a convincing six-wicket victory against Kolkata Knight Riders in Kolkata, on Wednesday.

Rohit hit 10 fours and two sixes his 54-ball knock, while Jos Buttler played a vital cameo of 41 from 22 balls as defending champions Mumbai powered their way to 188 for four in 19.1 overs, in reply to KKR's 187 for five, to win with five deliveries to spare.

Earlier, Gautam Gambhir and Manish Pandey stroked half-centuries to power Kolkata Knight Riders to a huge 187 for five in their 20 overs.

Mumbai 188-4 (19.1 ovs) vs KKR 187-4 | SCORECARD

Australia's death over specialist Hastings bowls a brilliant 18th over, his final of the innings, conceding just four runs to keep the KKR slightly ahead in the closing stages.

He manages to keep both Buttler and Rohit quiet at a crucial juncture, finishing with 31 runs from four overs.

Mumbai need 18 from two overs for victory with seven wickets in hand. Buttler is going great guns, on 41 from 21 balls, while Rohit has 67 from 49 balls.

Russell to bowl the 19th over. Rohit lofts the first ball straight back over the bowler's head for a four to make a perfect start to the over.

The next ball is full and wide as Rohit drives it uppishly to sweeper cover for just a single.

Buttler goes after the next delivery but only skies it high and is caught at mid-off as the right-hander walks back after a superb innings of 41 from 22 balls.

Mumbai need 13 from nine balls.

The two batsmen had crossed while the catch was being taken and that proves crucial.

Russell bowls a wide slower ball as Rohit steers it fine on the off-side for a four and lofts the next ball over mid-off for another boundary.

He slog sweeps the last ball of the over through midwicket to make it a hat-trick of fours and level scores.

23:23   Buttler's attack brings Mumbai back into the contest

Mumbai 166-3 (17 ovs) vs KKR 187-4 | SCORECARD

Buttler on the attack as he goes after Russell. He walks across his stumps and flicks Russell fine on the leg side for a boundary before he smokes the next ball over the off-side for a six.

He repeats the shot off the very next delivery for another maximum as Russell suffers some of his own medicine, giving away 18 runs in his third over.

The match is well within Mumbai's grasp with 31 needed from four overs for victory.

Buttler turns Hogg on the leg side for a couple to raise the 50-run stand from just 26 balls but surprisingly the English batsman misses an easy full toss.

Rohit is gifted a boundary as Yusuf Pathan misfields one on the deep square leg fence and lets it go through followed by two runs from the last ball.

Mumbai inching closer as they need 22 from three overs for victory with two well set batsmen out in the middle.

Mumbai 139-3 (15 ovs) vs KKR 187-4 | SCORECARD

Pacer Hastings comes back as Buttler gets off the mark with a single and Sharma does the same. Two more singles as Hastings bowls a good tight over to take the asking rate beyond the 10 mark, with 75 needed from seven overs for victory.

Buttler gets the much-needed boundary for MI as he makes room and lofts Yadav over the off-side for a four followed by a reverse sweep but only for one.

Meanwhile, Rohit continues his love affair with Eden Gardens as he cruises to his fifty, from 39 balls.

Rohit turns the fourth ball on the leg side for two runs and picks one from the next as Yadav finishes with one for 37.

Hogg comes back as Rohit sweeps the first ball to get a boundary early in the over. Buttler opens up his left leg and blasts Hogg straight back down the ground for another four. The last ball is short as Buttler rocks back and pulls it high over midwicket for a six to get 17 runs from the over.
23:07   McClenaghan dismissed for 20, Mumbai lose 3rd wicket

Mumbai 109-3 (12 ovs) vs KKR 187-4 | SCORECARD

McClenaghan is turning the match on it's head. This time he swings Kuldeep over midwicket for his third six in the space of four balls to bring Mumbai's innings back on track.

The next ball is a full toss as McClenaghan mishits it to long-on where Suryakumar is slow to get to the ball and misses a possible chance.

However, he doesn't last much longer and is caught on the off-side from the fifth ball as he again mishits a full toss.

McClenaghan walks back after a brief cameo of 20 from eight balls.

22:52   Pandya out for 9, Mumbai in a spot of bother

Mumbai 101-2 (11 ovs) vs KKR 187-4 | SCORECARD

Kuldeep's second over is ruined by extras. The fourth ball is a big wide down the leg side as wicketkeeper Uthappa can't get to it to give away five wides. Rohit drives the last ball down the ground and comes back for two runs, and with the throw at the striker's end, he ducks at the very last minute only to confuse wicketkeeper Uthappa, who lets it go through for four extra runs, and a total of six runs.

15 runs from that over as Mumbai reach 87 for one at the halfway stage, with another 101 needed from 10 overs for victory.

Chawla ends Pandya's misery with the right-hander unable to get going at all. He made nine from 10 balls before hitting it straight into the hands of the fielder at long-off.

A surprise move from Mumbai Indians as left-handed Mitchell McClenaghan comes in at No. 4, ahead of Kieron Pollard and Jos Buttler.

And he gets into the task immediately, carting Chawla for back to back sixes over long-off. Infact, Surya had a chance to catch the second six, but he misjudged it big time and let it go over the ropes.

Mumbai are 101 for two in 11 overs, with 87 needed from nine overs for victory.

22:41   Mumbai Indians off to a good start after KKR post 187

Mumbai 72-1 (9 ovs) vs KKR 187-4 | SCORECARD

With the Powerplay gone, Mumbai bring spinners from both ends. Leg-spinner Piyush Chawla takes over from Hastings and he makes a tidy start, giving away just five runs in his first over.

Hogg, who bowled two overs for 11 runs, makes way for another left-arm spinner Kuldeep Yadav.

The young spinner also does well to keep the two Indian batsmen quiet, conceding five runs in his first over as KKR look to build up the pressure with some tight overs.

Rohit breaks the shackles as he pulls a short ball from Chawla over midwicket for a six. Hardik Pandya, who is promoted to No.3, is content to take his time to get going, taking six runs from his first six balls faced.

Rohit looks for the big heave over the leg side but bottom edges a full toss followed by a single.

Mumbai are 72 for one in nine overs with Rohit on 38 from 28 balls and Bumrah on six. They need another 116 runs from 11 overs for victory at an asking rate of 10.5.
22:28   Parthiv run out for 23, Mumbai lose 1st wicket

Mumbai 53-1 (6 ovs) vs KKR 187-4 | SCORECARD

Change of ends for Hastings, who replaces Russell. He starts with a leg side wide and then bowls it wide on the off-side as Rohit drives him through the covers for a four. The fifth ball is on the pads and this time Rohit helps it fine on the leg side for another four as Mumbai get 13 runs from the over to race to 50 for no loss in five overs.

After a poor first over, Hogg keeps it tight in the second over. Just three runs from the first four balls of his second over before the pressure pays off. Parthiv taps the ball on the leg side and sets off for a quick single as Rohit sends him back but Hogg does well to rush to his left, and throw in a quick return to the keeper to catch Parthiv short.

Parthiv walks back, run out for 23, after he put on 53 for the opening wicket with Rohit.

Mumbai 37-0 (4 ovs) vs KKR 187-4 | SCORECARD

Patel flashes at a short wide delivery from Russell but gets a thick edge which goes fine on the off-side for a four. He smashes the next right off the middle past mid-off for another boundary before Russell manages to get it right, conceding just one from the last four balls of the over.

KKR introduce spin early as stand-in captain Suryakumar Yadav calls veteran Brad Hogg into the attack, to the bowl the fourth over.

Rohit pulls the second ball through square leg for a four and Parthiv repeats the shot off the last ball for the same result as Hogg goes for 10 runs in his first over.

Mumbai are off to a good start, as they race to 37 for no loss in four overs.
22:08

Mumbai 18-0 (2 ovs) vs KKR 187-4 | SCORECARD

Mumbai have a new opening pair in Rohit Sharma and Parthiv Patel, with the latter coming in for the injured Lendl Simmons, who has been ruled out of IPL 9 with an injury.

Andre Russell opens the bowling for KKR. Rohit wastes no time in getting going as he flicks the third ball over square leg for a six to get off the mark in grand style. However, he inside edges the next ball for a single on the leg side with Parthiv taking one from the last ball.

Pace from both ends as John Hastings come in to the bowl the second over. Parthiv pulls the second ball through square leg for a four and Rohit plays a cracking straight drive back over the bowler's head for another four as Mumbai reach 18 for no loss in two overs.

After KKR were put into bat, captain Gambhir top scored with 64 from 52 balls, while Pandey smashed a quickfire 52 from 29 balls.

21:45   Gambhir out for 64, KKR lose 4th wicket

KKR 187-4 (20 ovs) vs Mumbai | SCORECARD

Gambhir, on 55, gets another lifeline as Bumrah puts down the easiest of chances. The left-hander is foxed by a slower ball and ends up lobbing it high straight back on the pitch but Bumrah is unable to take the easy offering.

Gambhir mishits the next ball but again it falls safely as Bumrah's change of pace keeps Russell quiet. But not for long as Russell pulls the last ball over midwicket for a six.

McClenaghan brings Mumbai some relief with the wicket of the dangerous Russell, who inside edges it back on to his stumps. He walks back after an entertaining knock of 36 from 17 balls, having hit a four and four sixes, putting on 43 runs from 22 balls for the third wicket with his captain Gambhir.

Pandya to bowl the crucial 19th over. He gets the wicket of Gambhir with his first delivery after the KKR is foxed by the slower ball and spoons it high behind the wicket where wicketkeeper Parthiv Patel does well to take the catch.

Gambhir walks back after a good innings of 64 from 52 balls as Mumbai manage to take a couple of quick wickets to check KKR's charge.

Yusuf Pathan smashes the next delivery through the covers for a four followed by a single.

New batsman Colin Munro also gets off the mark with a single before Pathan pulls a slower bouncer to deep square leg for one.

Colin Munro pulls the last ball through square leg for two runs as KKR reach 180 for four in 19 overs.

Bumrah to bowl the final over of the innings. The first ball is a yorker as Pathan digs it out for just a single before Munro is foxed twice in a row by Bumrah's slower balls.

He comes down the track to the next ball for a single before the Kiwi left-hander is run out, going for a tight second over after Pathan had it through the off-side.

Suryakumar Yadav reverse paddles the last ball fine on the off-side for a four.

A good comeback from Mumbai in the last few overs, as KKR managed just 24 runs in the last three overs for the loss of three wickets.

21:26   Russell's attack puts KKR on course for a huge total

KKR 151-2 (16 ovs) vs Mumbai | SCORECARD

Andre Russell comes in at No. 4 and he would be keen to continue Kolkata's positive approach.

He doesn't take time to get going. Two bouncers from Russell are left alone before the tall West Indian smashes the third short ball through midwicket for a six. Two balls later, he clubs it powerfully down the ground for another maximum as Southee continues to leak runs, finishing with expensive figures of 43 runs in four overs.

KKR looking for a total around the 200-run mark as they reach 138 for two in 15 overs.

In the next over, Russell goes after Harbhajan, crashing the first ball over midwicket for a six. He swings hard again at the fifth ball but gets a thick outside edge for a four past the wicketkeeper.

Harbhajan ends up giving away 13 runs in his final over to finish with one for 31 in four overs.

Russell looks in a rush, smashing his way to 27 from 12 balls, while Gambhir is on 55 from 45 balls.
21:14   Pandey out for 52, Kolkata lose 2nd wicket

KKR 122-2 (14 ovs) vs Mumbai | SCORECARD

Bumrah comes back for his second spell, he still has three overs in hand. Pandey lofts the first ball on the leg side for two runs before he hits the next square on the off-side for a four. A single from the next ball helps Pandey race to his fifty, from just 26 balls, having hit three fours and three sixes.

Even the pacers are going for runs, with Bumrah also giving away 10 runs in his second over, the same as McClenaghan in the previous over.

Harbhajan comes back into the attack. A single from Gambhir raises the 100-run stand for the second wicket from just 61 balls as KKR continue to prosper at a very good rate.

But Harbhajan raises Mumbai's spirits with the key wicket of Pandey, who is caught and bowled after a splendid innings of 52 from just 29 balls.

Pandey looks to turn it on the leg side but closes the face a bit too early, to get a leading edge which lobs straight back to Harbhajan.

A good over from Harbhajan, giving away four runs, while making the crucial breakthrough.

21:03   Gambhir and Pandey slam 50s, KKR set for a huge score

KKR 108-1 (12 ovs) vs Mumbai | SCORECARD

Pandey continues his attack as he comes down the track to Suchith and lofts him straight down the ground, over long-on for a six. He turns the next ball through the leg side for a couple followed by a single.

Gambhir joins in the party as he chips down the track and lofts the left-arm spinner over midwicket for the second six of the over.

Suchith has been hit for 18 runs in his second over, with KKR racing to 99 for one in 11 overs, scoring at nine runs per over.

Mumbai are desperate for a breakthrough as they bring back pacer McClenaghan. Gambhir hits the first ball through the leg side for two runs to bring up KKR's 100, in the 12th over.

Gambhir turns the fifth ball of the over to thirdman for a single to bring up his fifty from 39 balls.

Despite not conceding a four, KKR manage to get nine runs from McClenaghan's third over as they reach 108 for one in 12 overs.
21:01
Meanwhile, Mumbai Indians head coach Ricky Ponting said that New Zealand's run machine Martin Guptill has been called up as the replacement for the injured Lendl Simmons, who has been ruled out of the tournament with injury.

Interestingly, Guptill, despite his red hot form in the last year or so was ignored by all the franchises in the IPL Players' Auction earlier this year.

20:51

KKR 81-1 (10 ovs) vs Mumbai | SCORECARD

Spin from both ends as left-armer Jagadeesha Suchith comes into the attack. He is unlucky not to pick a wicket rightaway as Rohit puts downs a straight forward chance at midwicket with Gambhir (30) looking to play it over the fielder.

Pandey looking to be positive and keen is hit a couple of fours in every over. He looks to heave Suchith on the leg side but fails to make proper connection and gets two runs. However, he connects off the middle with the sweep to get the boundary before taking another couple on the leg side followed by two singles as Suchith goes for 13 in his first over.

Pandey goes after Harbhajan in his next over, slamming him over midwicket for a six. Gambhir is content to play it safe as he tucks the off-spinner on the leg side for two runs.

Pandey then hammers a full delivery straight back over the bowler's head for a straight six followed by a single to keep strike.

Southee continues despite going for 13 runs in his previous over and again he is taken for runs.

Gambhir edges the first ball, it is a thick edge as Bumrah does well to run around and stop the ball at thirdman to keep it down to two. Two singles before Gambhir ends the over with back to back fours, through the leg side as Southee gives away 12 runs in his third over.

Out of KKR's total of 34 for one in five overs, Southee has conceded 27 runs in three overs.

New batsman Manish Pandey shows Uthappa how it is done as he confidently pulls a short ball from McClenaghan through midwicket for his first boundary.

He attempts another pull a few deliveries later but fails to make proper connection and gets a single and Gambhir picks one from the next.

McClenaghan does well to make a comeback after the boundary off the first ball to give away just six runs in his second over.

KKR have recovered after Uthappa's early wicket to reach 40 for one in six overs with Gambhir on 23 and Pandey on six.

A good start by McClenagahan, making the breakthrough while conceding just three runs.

19:08   Champions Mumbai Indians hope to bounce back vs KKR

Welcome to the coverage of the fifth match of the Indian Premier League 2016 between Kolkata Knoight Riders and Mumbai Indians, in Kolkata, on Wednesday.

Defending champions Mumbai Indians will be aiming to get back to winning ways when they take on Kolkata Knight Riders, who have been boosted by the return of mystery spinner Sunil Narine.

While KKR clinically decimated Delhi Daredevils by nine wickets having bowled the opposition for a sub-100 score, the Mumbai Indians were at the receiving end with league debutants Rising Pune Supergiants giving them a sound thrashing by nine wickets.

Narine, who had left for the Caribbean after his father's demise is back in Kolkata, and with clearance from the International Cricket Council will like to forge a lethal combination with 45-year-old
chinaman exponent Brad Hogg, if both are picked as overseas recruits.

Narine with 74 IPL scalps from four seasons has been instrumental in Gautam Gambhir leading the Shah Rukh Khan co-owned franchise to titles in 2012 and 2014.

If Mumbai Indians, who had won their two IPL titles at this venue in 2013 and 2015, will have to bounce back from the defeat against debutants Pune Supergiants in the IPL opener, the onus will be on their batters to decode the spin puzzle of KKR at their happy hunting venue.

Mumbai captain Rohit Sharma who will have to lead by example up front at the same venue where he had scored an ODI world record 264.

"Hopefully, we will go back and come back with a positive frame of mind. Never thought the ball would do that much having played a lot of cricket here. They swung it a lot and our shot selection wasn't great. We have good memories in Kolkata. It's just the start of the tournament, no need to panic," Rohit had said.

With their team think-tank boasting the legendary duo of Sachin Tendulkar and Ricky Ponting to go with a star studded line-up captained by Rohit Sharma, there's an overflowing of talents in the most decorated dressing room.
