16:41   Kohli, Vijay hit centuries to guide India to 451-7 at stumps

STUMPS - DAY 3

India 451-7 (142 ovs) vs England 400 | Scorecard

Captain Virat Kohli led from the front with an unbeaten century, while opener Murali Vijay scored 136 to help India take the first innings lead, on Day 3, of the fourth Test match.

Kohli was unbeaten on a magnificent innings of 147 at close, while Jayant Yadav was not out on 30 with the duo involved in an unbroken stand of 87 runs for the eighth wicket to give the hosts the lead.

Vijay and Kohli lifted India after the early dismissal of Pujara (47) with a 116-run stand for the third wicket.

Part-timer Root claimed two quick wickets, that of Parthiv and Ashwin, to check India's charge in the post-lunch session before Kohli took centrestage.

With the pitch offering a lot of assistance to the spinners, India would be looking to claim a sizeable lead on Day 4 and let their spinners loose on England in their second innings.

Kohli has played one of the best innings I have seen. It looked like England might get a lead, but Virat Kohli has denied them that: Sunil Gavaskar on BBC TMS

16:26   Captain Kohli hits century as India stretch lead

India 450-7 (140 ovs) vs England 400 | Scorecard

Jayant looks to drive Moeen through the off-side but gets a thick inside edge which misses the bat and goes past the wicketkeeper, fine on the leg side for a four. He does get the next ball through the gap in the covers for a couple and then picks one.

After a brief rest, England's marathon man Rashid comes back into the attack. Jayant drives the third ball through the covers for a four and repeats the shot off Moeen in the next over for the same result to take his score to 28.

Kohli continues his superb shot making as he flays a full delivery from Rashid straight down the ground for a four and then takes a single as his score advances to 143.

Jayant gets a lifeline as the England players appeal for a catch down the leg side off Moeen but umpire Oxenford turns it. And interestingly, replays show Jayant had got a fine tickle before wicketkeeper Bairstow caught it but England have no reviews left to challenge the on-field umpire's call.

India have taken their score to 450 for seven in 140 overs, stretching their lead to 50 runs.

Kohli is looking in total control on 146, while Jayant is batting on 30 with the partnership worth 86 runs now.

India 417-7 (132 ovs) vs England 400 | Scorecard

Rashid finally gets a well-deserved break after a marathon 28-over fourth spell in which he took two wickets for 88 runs.

He is replaced by pacer James Anderson from the Pavilion End as England finally take the second new ball, after a long wait of 129.2 overs.

Captain Cook brings in the second slip for Jayant (8) and the right-hander obliges edging it straight to Stokes, but he puts down a straightforward chance.

Chris Woakes comes on from the other end. Kohli plays a delightful straight drive for a four, punching a full delivery off his front foot, reminding many of Mumbai's batting great Sachin Tendulkar.

England take another poor DRS review after an appeal for caught behind for Jayant off Anderson is turned down. Infact, even some of the England players also didn't seem convincing when they decided to take the review. So England have lose both their reviews with another 49 overs left before they get two fresh ones.

Kohli plays a stylish flick off Anderson in the gap between fine leg and deep square leg for a wonderful boundary to raise the 50-run stand for the eighth wicket, from 82 balls.

Kohli decides to cut loose as he upper cuts a short ball from Anderson for a single to thirdman.

India 404-7 (129 ovs) vs England 400 | Scorecard

Rashid beats Kohli with one that grips and turns big and even beats wicketkeeper Bairstow for four byes.

The next ball is flicked in quite some style by Kohli through midwicket for another boundary as the scoreboard continues to move at a good rate.

He edges the fifth ball but it goes wide of the slip fielder for three runs to the Indian total which moves to 399 for seven in 128 overs.

Kohli whips Moeen through midwicket for a couple to take India past the 400-run mark, and also take the lead.

India 385-7 (124 ovs) vs England 400 | Scorecard

Rashid has a confident shout for LBW turned down as Jayant is struck on the pads, looking to defend off the front foot.

On-field Erasmus rejects the call and the England team decide to go for the DRS.

And the review goes India's way as the ball tracker shows that the ball would have missed the off-stump comfortably. That is a poor review by England, a rather desperate call with India getting close to 400.

Pacer Chris Woakes comes into the attack for the first time on Day 3, to bowl the 123rd over of the innings with a very old ball.

Jayant plays a nice straight drive past mid-on for three runs before Kohli slaps the last ball of the over from Woakes through point for a four.

India 375-7 (121 ovs) vs England 400 | Scorecard

Kohli turns Rashid to square leg and sprints the first run in search for the second run but Buttler swoops in quickly to keep it down to just a single.

Jayant drives the fifth ball through the off-side for two runs to get off the mark and plays out the last ball to keep Kohli, who is on 99, on strike for the next over.

Kohli drives pacer Ball through the covers where a misfield gives him a single and gets him his century from 187 balls. This is his second century of the series following the 167 he made in the second Test in Visakhapatnam.

This is Kohli's 15th century to go along with 14 fifties in his 52nd Test match as his average inches closer to the 50 mark.

Yadav takes one before Kohli slaps the last ball through the covers for a four.
14:53   Jadeja dismissed for 25, India lose 7th wicket

India 366-7 (118 ovs) vs England 400 | Scorecard

England strike just at the right moment to dent India's hopes of getting a sizeable lead. Jadeja looks to cart Rashid down the ground but can't get enough power and is caught at mid-on for 25 after he had added 57 runs for the seventh wicket with Kohli.

Kohli flicks the last ball of the over through square leg for a couple to take his score to 98.

He will need good support from Jayant Yadav, who has shown great temperament with the bat in his first two Tests, and even registered a fifty in the Mohali Test.
14:42   Kohli, Jadeja rally India after quick wickets

India 361-6 (116 ovs) vs England 400 | Scorecard

England continue with spin after the tea break as Rashid comes on from the pavilion end with the old ball. Jadeja flicks the second ball straight into the hands of Jennings at short leg, who is unable to hold on. He did well to take a similar catch to dismiss Ashwin but this time he is unable to repeat the magic.

Three singles from the first five balls before Kohli pulls the short ball over midwicket for a four as India go past the 350-run mark, in the 114th over.

Kohli cuts a short ball from Rashid through the vacant thirdman region for a four to raise the 50-run stand for the seventh wicket from 66 balls.

Kohli also takes his score to 94 courtesy of that boundary and within a stroke of getting to another century.

The post-lunch session saw India score 101 runs in 30 overs, but they lost four wickets including two wickets in successive overs to part-timer Root, who accounted for Parthiv and Ashwin.

Vijay was the first wicket to fall in the session, when he was caught and bowled by Rashid for 136, but the same bowler dropped Kohli when he was on 68.

Karun Nair failed with the bat as he was trapped leg before wicket for 13 by Moeen.

14:13   Kohli, Jadeja rally India to 348-6 at tea on Day 3

TEA - DAY 3

India 348-6 (113 ovs) vs England 400 | Scorecard

Jadeja has come out all guns blazing. This time he takes full toll of a short delivery from Root, pulling it over midwicket for a six.

In the next over, Kohli sweeps Rashid fine on the leg side for a four as the Kohli-Jadeja combine look to adopt a positive approach to hit back at the England bowlers, who have been on top since the lunch break.
Kohli misses out on a full toss from Root as he turns it to deep midwicket for just a smile and Jadeja takes one followed by two more singles to make it four runs from the over.

Root is taken off after a superb spell of four in which he claimed two wickets for 14 runs to bring England back into the contest.

He is replaced Moeen, who starts with a long hop which Jadeja pulls over midwicket for a four to take his score to 18 from 22 balls. The two batsmen keep the scoreboard moving with three more singles from the over.

Both the batsmen have shown great resolve to rally India after Root's two-wicket burst, with a brisk stand of 39 runs from 47 balls for the seventh wicket.

England introduce pacer Jake Ball to bowl the final over of the session as Jadeja and Kohli take a single each to take India to 348 for six in 113 overs at the tea break.

13:43   Root's twin strikes leave India in trouble

India 319-6 (106 ovs) vs England 400 | Scorecard

The onus will now be on Kohli, to firstly take India as close as possible to England's score, and also look for a sizeable lead once he manages to get some partnerships going with the lower order.

Ashwin has been a revelation with the bat in the series and he will need to produce another good innings.

Part-timer Root has struck again, for his second wicket in as many overs. This time Ashwin hits it straight into the hands of the fielder at short leg for a duck. Infact, Jennings at short leg did well to pouch a flick right off the middle of Ashwin's bat as India slip to 307 for six.

New batsman Ravindra Jadeja makes his intentions clear right at the start as he smashes the fourth ball he faces back over Root's head for a four.

It could have been worse for India but Rashid puts down a straightforward caught and bowled chance off Kohli (68 from 148 balls).

Kohli hit two fours in the over, sweeping Rashid and pulling a short ball to take his score to 72.

13:31   Parthiv dismissed for 15, India lose 5th wicket

India 305-5 (103 ovs) vs England 400 | Scorecard

England bring in part-timer Joe Root into the attack, in place of Moeen, who has so far taken two for 111 in 37 overs.

He strikes in the first over of his new spell as Parthiv goes after a wide delivery but gets an outside edge and is caught by wicketkeeper Bairstow for 15.

Captain Kohli must be a worried man as India keep losing wickets at regular intervals in the post-lunch session, with England claiming three for 43 in the space of 20 overs.

13:23   Kohli, Parthiv take India past 300

India 300-4 (101 ovs) vs England 400 | Scorecard

Rashid drops one short as Kohli cuts it past point for a four, his first boundary after a long wait of nearly 30 overs.

The two England spinners have kept India's batsmen in a tight leash, looking to build up pressure with some tight bowling.

India still quite a few batsmen to follow including Ravi Ashwin and Ravi Jadeja, who have both got runs in the series.

However, they will need Kohli and Parthiv to put up a sizeable partnership and take India as close as possible to England's score.

Patel makes most of a short ball from Moeen, pulling it through midwicket for a four before a single brings up India's 300, in the 101st over.

12:58   Nair fails with the bat as India lose 4th wicket

India 281-4 (95 ovs) vs England 400 | Scorecard

The match has turned after lunch, it looks like with England getting two quick wickets.

The young Nair is trapped leg before wicket for 13 by Moeen as India slip to 279 for four, in the 55th over.

On-field umpire Bruce Oxenford ruled him out forcing England to take the DRS which went in their favour.

India, who were 247 for two at lunch, have suddenly slipped to 279 for four, having lost two wickets for 32 runs in 11.1 overs.

Parthiv Patel looks to defend but gets a thick outside edge which lobs on the off-side but thankfully for the Indians it falls safely.

India 272-3 (92 ovs) vs England 400 | Scorecard

Kohli gets his half-century with a single from 111 balls, having hit five fours in the 91st over.

Nair having some problems with Rashid and in his next over he survives a confident call for LBW as England decide against going for the DRS. Nair then turns the fifth ball fine on the leg side for a couple.

India 266-3 (88 ovs) vs England 400 | Scorecard

Vijay gets going with a flick off the first ball of Moeen's 29th over for a couple to deep midwicket before he picks one on the leg side and Kohli takes a quick run to square leg.

Vijay gives Moeen the charge in his next over and smashes him straight past mid-off for a four before he sweeps the last ball to deep square leg for one.

Rashid strikes in the next over with the key wicket of Vijay, who is caught and bowled for 136. He must have been disappointed to hit a full straight back to the bowler after playing such a wonderful knock to be dismissed 14 minutes after the lunch break.

Vijay laid the foundation with a third wicket partnership of 116 runs from 212 balls with captain Kohli.

Karun Nair gets off the mark with a four as Rashid presents him with a short ball which he pulls through square leg.

Vijay led India's superb batting display as he hit a splendid 124, while Kohli made a fluent 44 with the duo involved in an unbroken stand of 101 runs from 184 balls for the third wicket to rally India after the early dismissal of Pujara.

Pujara, who made 47, was dismissed off the second ball of the day when he was bowled by Jake Ball.

Overall, India scored 101 runs in 31 overs in the morning session as both Vijay and Kohli looked completely in control. They would look to continue their good showing after lunch and take their team to a big first innings total.
11:33   Spin from both ends now as Moeen comes in to replace Anderson, from the Media End. Vijay, on 116, survive

LUNCH - DAY 3

India 247-2 (83 ovs) vs England 400 | Scorecard

Spin from both ends now as Moeen comes in to replace Anderson, from the Media End.

Vijay, on 116, survives a leg before shout courtesy the DRS. He is given out leg before wicket to Rashid as he looks to defend the one going straight on. Umpire Erasmus had given him out as the Indians took the DRS, which showed that Vijay had got a slight inside edge but the ball hit the pads. Vijay survives a close call while England lose one of their two reviews, 12 minutes from lunch.

Vijay then steers a wide ball from Rashid past the slip fielder to collect two runs.

India are 240 for two after 80 overs, scoring at exactly three runs per over. The second new ball is available but England are not taking it straightaway as spinners operate from both ends.

Vijay turns Rashid fine on the leg side and the balls looks destined to hit the ropes till Stokes runs all the way from slips and sprints all the way to fine leg before coming up with a dive just inside the ropes to keep it down to three.

Rashid bowls a beauty to Kohli, gets one to turn big, beating Kohli all ends up, who was looking to defend fro the pitch.

Vijay edes Moeen for two runs to bring up the 100-run stand for the third wicket from 182 balls as India continue to make good progress on Day 3.

Rashid gets Vijay to edge one but it goes wide of the slip fielder for three runs. In the next over, he takes on Anderson lofting him over mid-on for a four although he didn't make proper connection. The pacer tries a short and this time Vijay pulls it between fine leg and square leg for two more runs and then tickles the next ball fine for another couple.

India 216-2 (72 ovs) vs England 400 | Scorecard

The Kohli vs Stokes battle is turning out to be an interesting and so far the Indian has been holding the upperhand. Stokes once again tries the short ball and Kohli pulls it in emphatic fashion through midwicket for a four, to take his score to 35, and bring up his 1000 runs in Tests in 2016.

Finally, we have James Anderson into the attack, from the Media End. Kohli turns the first ball on the leg side for a single before Vijay keeps out a yorker and then punches a half volley down the ground for two runs to move to 99 as England bring their field in to deny him the single.

Vijay brings up his century with a quick single off Moeen to roar back to form in grand style, after a poor showing in the last couple of Tests.

This is Vijay's eighth Test century and it came off 231 balls to make up for his failures in the last two matches.
10:35   Vijay, Kohli take India past 200-run mark

India 204-2 (68 ovs) vs England 400 | Scorecard

Meanwhile, a single to Kohli in Moeen's next over helps India raise their 200, in the 66th over.

Stokes trying to test Kohli with bouncers with two men in the deep, however, the right-hander manages to keep the ball on the ground as he pulls for a single followed by three singles in Moeen's next over.

Despite the early dismissal of Pujara, India have done well to score at a brisk rate and reach 204 for two in 68 overs, having added 58 runs in 16 overs in the first hour in the morning session on Day 3.

10:12   Vijay closes in on century as India make good progress

India 189-2 (63 ovs) vs England 400 | Scorecard

Vijay gets his first runs of the day in commanding fashion, lofting Moeen straight back over his head for a six and then takes one on the off-side. England have a fielder at deep midwicket for the flick which the Indians love to play against the off-spinner and Kohli hits the last ball along the ground to the same fielder for just one.

England have now put a fielder back at thirdman for Kohli, who has already hit three fours through that same region. He again steers Ball to thirdman but this he can get just a single.

Ball has been bowling well but England certainly missing a trick by not having James Anderson bowl to Kohli early on.

Meanwhile, Vijay plays a nice cover drive off Moeen for two runs and sweeps the next ball for a four to take his score into the 80s. Kohli ends the over with a brilliant cover drive for another boundary, his fourth of the innings to take his score to 19, he has been quite busy since his arrival at the crease.

Ben Stokes replaces Ball as England continue to hold back Anderson. Vijay turns the second ball on the leg side and is pushed by his captain to come back for the second run. Vijay goes after a wide half volley but is beaten. The India opener then drives Stokes through the covers where Adil Rashid is unable to get down quickly to give away two runs but the next ball is perfectly in the gap for a wonderful four as Vijay takes his score into the 90s.

09:49

India 160-2 (57 ovs) vs England 400 | Scorecard

No James Anderson at the start of the day as off-spinner Moeen Ali starts off from the other end. The off-spinner also starts off with a maiden to Murali Vijay, who likes to take his time when he starts off his innings or at the start of a new day.

Kohli gets off the mark in some style as he hits a short wide delivery from Ball square on the off-side for a four which also gives India their first runs of Day 3.

Vijay gets a leg bye before Kohli picks a single in Moeen's next over before the India captain hits two boundaries off Ball, in the 57th over.

Both times, Kohli opens the face of the bat and steers wide deliveries through the vacant thirdman region.

India 146-2 (51 ovs) vs England 400 | Scorecard

Jake Ball strikes with the second ball of the day as Pujara offers no shot and sees the ball come in sharply to strike the stumps.

Pujara left the first ball alone and tried to do the same to the next delivery but misjudged the bounce, hoping it would carry over the stumps but it didn't. A big error of judgement from the Indian No. 3 but the Mumbai crowd don't mind it all as India's start batsman Virat Kohli walks out to the middle to a huge ovation.

Kohli manages to see of the remaining four deliveries of the over as Ball starts the third day with a wicket-maiden.
