STUMPS - DAY 4

England 12-0 (5 ovs) & 477 vs India 759-7d  | Scorecard

A memorable day for the Indians as Karun Nair became only the second India to hit a double century in Tests. He made an unbeaten 303 after his Karnataka team mate KL Rahul had been dismissed for 199 to steer India to a mammoth 759 for seven declared, their highest score in Test cricket.

In reply, England made 12 for no loss in five overs in their second innings.

Karun, who started the day on 71, looked in total control as he gradually increased the tempo after completing his century. And his scoring rate took a further leap after he went past his double century as he raced from 200 to 300 from just 75 balls.

England face a testing final day on a wicket playing the odd trick but still good enough for batsmen, but India have the quality in their spin department and they would look to push for victory in the remaining 90 overs on Day 5.

England 12-0 (5 ovs) & 477 vs India 759-7d  | Scorecard

Alastair Cook and Keaton Jennings will open the batting for the visitors, who have their task cut out with India have enough runs in hand to push for victory on the final day.

Ishant Sharma to open the bowling for the Indians. Cook turns the second ball on the leg side for two runs to get off the mark before Ishant beats him with one that moves away slightly after pitching.

Off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin comes in from the other end. Keaton Jennings is struck on the pads as the Indians close go up in appeal but the impact is well outside the off-stump. Jennings turns the third ball on the leg side for a couple before he defends one watchfully and manages to see out the over.

Just one over from Ishant before Ravindra Jadeja comes into the attack to replace him. The first ball is on the pads as Cook flicks it fine and just about manages to evade the fielder at short fine leg.

Jadeja has got Cook five times in the series and he will need to be careful against the left-arm spinner.

England have successfully negotiated the first three overs and they have another couple of overs to face before stumps.

Ashwin has four close in fielders on the off-side as Jennings sweeps it fine past the short fine leg fielder for a four before he takes a single.

Cook doing well to defend solidly everything throw at him as England look to avoid any dramas before stumps.

England finish the day on 12 for no loss in five overs, trailing India by 270 runs.

16:43   Karun hits triple century, India declare on 759-7

India 759-7d (190.4 ovs) vs England 477 | Scorecard

Karun cuts a short ball from Rashid through point for a four to bring up his 300, from 381 balls, having hit 32 fours and four sixes. And with that, India declare their first innings as Kohli calls his players back into the dressing room.

He becomes only the second Indian after Virender Sehwag to hit a triple hundred in Tests, who also hit 319 in Chennai, against South Africa in 2008.

This is only the third triple hundred in the history of Indian Test cricket after Sehwag's 319 and 309.

India declare their first innings on 759 for seven in 190.4 overs to finish with a massive first-innings lead of 282 runs.

This is India's highest ever score in Test cricket, beating the 726 for nine declared they made against Sri Lanka in Mumbai in 2009. This is only the fourth time that India have gone past the 700-run mark, in Test cricket.

He walks off to a standing ovation from the Chennai crowd, while all the England players walk up to him to congratulate him on his feat.

England have around five overs left in the day's play and the whole of the fifth day on a pitch, which has started to play some tricks.

India 755-7 (190 ovs) vs England 477 | Scorecard

Nine overs left in the fourth day's play. So India would ideally want Karun to get to his 300 in this over so they could declare and have a short burst against England before stumps.

England make a bowling change as they bring back Dawson to replace Moeen. Karun turns the first ball behind square on the leg side for a single as he turns down the second run.

Jadeja hands the strike back with another quiet single as Karun defends the next ball. He opens the face of the bat and steers it to point for one to take his score to 299.

Jadeja has a go as he slog sweeps Dawson but is caught at deep midwicket after a quickfire innings of 51 as Umesh Yadav strides out to the middle.

Karun tries to paddle sweep the last ball but fails to make connection.

Umesh gets a thick outside edge past point for a single to get Karun on strike, who tries the sweep but fails to connect.

16:25   Karun closes in on 300, India cross 750

India 751-6 (189 ovs) vs England 477 | Scorecard

Karun lofts Rashid inside out over the covers for two runs to go past VVS Laxman's 281 before another couple off a reverse sweep takes him to 284.

He gives Rashid the charge and smashes him through the covers for a four.

Meanwhile, India are 730 for six to register their highest score in Test cricket.

England are looking mentally tired as the fielder at short thirdman misfields and gifts Nair another couple of runs as his scores reaches 290. He tries another reverse but can't beat the fielder at short thirdman.

The last ball is short as Karun pulls it over midwicket for a four to take his score to 294.

Jadeja joins in the party as he comes down the track and lofts Moeen straight down the ground over long-off for a six. A selfless Karun calls Jadeja for two runs as the left-hander flicks the second ball through midwicket.

He takes a single off the fourth ball to deep point to bring Karun back on strike. Karun turns Moeen on the leg side but gets just a single to take his score to 295 and over Sehwag's 293 against Sri Lanka in 2009.

Jadeja again drives the first ball to deep point for a single to give the strike back to Karun.

The youngster chips the second ball to long-on for one to take his score to 296, just a four away from the three hundred.

Jadeja picks another single to a huge cheer from the crowd as he races to his fifty, from 52 balls and also brings up India's 750. Karun in no hurry as he takes another run to take his score to 297.

16:14   Karun hits 250 as India cross 700-run mark

India 722-6 (186 ovs) vs England 477 | Scorecard

The floodgates have opened with the declaration imminent anytime. Karun flicks Moeen through midwicket for two runs before he launches the off-spinner over long-on for a six.

A few more big hits could put Karun on the verge of scaling the elusive 300-run mark. A single to the right-hander takes India past the 700-run mark, after 184 overs.

Karun heaves Rashid over midwicket for a six before he sweeps the leg-spinner for a four to take his score to 271 and go past Dravid's 270 he scored vs Pakistan in 2004.

Karun uses the sweep yet again for another four through square leg and within his sights is now VVS Laxman's magical 281.

He takes a single to long-off to keep strike for the next over. He has already 81 runs from 57 balls in the post-tea session to boost India's scoring rate after tea.

Karun reverse sweeps Moeen but misses before he gets the bottom edge off the next for two runs and then gets a single on the leg side. The partnership is now 105 runs from 92 balls for the seventh wicket.

Will India declare their innings in the next couple of overs or wait for Karun to get his 300?
16:02   Karun hits 250 as India swell lead on Day 4

India 691-6 (183 ovs) vs England 477 | Scorecard

Karun fast closing in on the 250-run mark as he reverse sweeps Moeen fine on the off-side for a four to take his score into the 240s.

Perhaps India will wait for Karun to get to his 250 before they declare their innings with around 20 overs left in the day.

India are 671 for six in 179 overs to register their highest total against England in Tests.

Karun (246) gets another lifeline as wicketkeeper Bairstow misses a regulation stumping. He gives Moeen the charge but is beaten in the flight but Bairstow is unable to gather it cleanly and whip off the bails as the ball turns big after pitching.

Karun has three lifelines so far and he has made England pay so dearly for their lapses on the field.

Stokes keeps it short to Jadeja, who cuts it wide of thirdman for two runs and then takes a single. Karun hits the fifth ball to thirdman for one as India's lead crosses the 200-run mark.

A few singles off Moeen takes Karun one run short of the coveted 250 mark. In the next over, he taps Rashid on the leg side to reach the landmark and become only the fourth Indian batsman to go past the 250-run mark after Virender Sehwag, VVS Laxman and Rahul Dravid.

India are 691 for six in 183 overs for an overall lead of 214 runs, with another 15 overs left in the day's play.

15:42   Karun's double century extends India's lead

India 658-6 (177 ovs) vs England 477 | Scorecard

India in the attack mode as Karun takes on a short ball from Broad and pulls it over midwicket for a four. He is fast climbing the list of India's highest scorers in Test cricket, he is currently on 232 not out with the likes of Virat Kohli, Rahul Dravid, Sunil Gavaskar, Sourav Ganguly and Sachin Tendulkar within touching distance.

A single off Ball takes him to 235, equalling Kohli's score, the highest by an Indian batsman against England in Tests.

Jadeja has had enough of blocking the short balls. He goes hard after a bouncer from Ball and powers it high over the square leg fence for a six to take India past the 650-run mark, in the 176th over.

The next ball is hit perfectly in the gap between deep square leg and deep midwicket for a four as the boundaries start to flow for India.

England bring back their best bowler Stokes into the attack, in place of Broad. Nair takes a couple of singles to take his score to 237 to catch up with Gavaskar, who also got the record at this venue. He held the Indian record for a long time till VVS Laxman scored that magical 281 in 2001.

15:18   Karun's double century extends India's lead

India 633-6 (174 ovs) vs England 477 | Scorecard

Karun gets another lifeline and again the unfortunate bowler is Jake Ball. Karun was dropped by Cook in the slips on 38 and he made England pay big time with a double century and he is put down again by Root in the same position on 218.

Karun is seeing the ball the size of a football at the moment. Broad tries a bouncer as Karun goes low and ramps it over the keeper and the timing is so good that it carries all the way over the fence for a six, to take his score to 225.

England giving Jadeja nothing as they employ pacers from both ends, bowling short balls at his body.

India's overall lead is over 150 runs now, with 24 overs left in the day.
15:07   Ashwin dismissed for 67, India lose 6th wicket

India 616-6 (171 ovs) vs England 477 | Scorecard

With the double century out of the way, Karun is looking to break free as he smashes a short delivery through the covers for a four. Another couple of singles later in the over takes India past the 600-run mark, in the 168th over.

Stuart Broad comes into the attack as England take the third new ball. Ashwin hits the second ball through the point region for a four as the all-rounder becomes the fifth cricketer to take 25 wickets and score 300 runs in a series.

India have upped the ante with 24 runs coming from the first four overs of the post-tea session.

And the flow of runs continue. Jake Ball comes into the attack and he starts off with a short ball and a fielder employed behind the wicketkeeper to stop Karun playing the ramp shot.

The first ball as expected is short as Karun plays a tennis forehand through midwicket for a four. The next ball is again short as Karun pulls it through the vacant mid-on region for three runs.

Joe Root stationed on the boundary behind the keeper is not impressed as Ashwin pulls a bouncer to fine leg for one.

Finally, better sense prevails as Root is called into the circle and placed at first slip.

England finally make the breakthrough as Ashwin is brilliantly caught by Jos Buttler, who takes a stunning one-handed catch to his left at point.

Ashwin walks back after a good innings of 67, after he had put on 181 runs for the sixth wicket with Nair to swell India's lead.

New batsman Ravindra Jadeja gets a quick bouncer first up which he does well to sway out of the way of.

India 593-5 (167 ovs) vs England 477 | Scorecard

Off-spinner Moeen Ali resumes proceedings after the tea break. Karun takes a single from the first ball on the leg side and picks another run two balls later to take his score to 197.

Jennings to continue after a few impressive overs before the break. Nair drives the first ball in some style through the covers for a four to bring up his double maiden in grand style, from 306 balls.

Karun is the third Indian to convert his maiden century into a double hundred after Dilip Sardesai and Vinod Kambli.

India are 593 for five in 167 overs, to extend their lead to 116 runs.

14:19   Karun closes in on double ton; India 582-5 at tea

TEA - DAY 4

India 582-5 (165 ovs) vs England 477 | Scorecard

India dominated the post-lunch session as they scored 119 runs in 30 overs without losing a wicket.

Ashwin continued his good run with the bat, scoring 54 not out as the duo were involved in an unbroken stand of 147 runs for the sixth wicket.

India 582-5 (165 ovs) vs England 477 | Scorecard

Moeen comes into the attack as Karun attempts the reverse sweep but can't beat the fielder on the off-side before he picks a single on the leg side.

Ashwin and Karun content to play it in singles with tea time round the corner as the latter also closes in on the double century.

Karun is lucky as he gets a thick inside edge which misses the stumps narrowly and goes for a four behind the wickets to take his score into the 190s.

Another Karnataka batsman in sight of a double hundred, if you remember, his team mate and good friend Rahul missed the landmark yesterday when he fell for 199.

Even Karun looking a bit nervous in the 190s as he looks to reverse sweep Moeen before changing his mind at the very late minute. He drives the last ball through the covers for two runs to take his score to 195.

Jennings hits Ashwin on the pads as the umpire rules him out LBW but the batsman decides to take the DRS review.

And sensibly so, as the ball tracker shows that the ball swung in too much and would have missed the leg stump.

13:53   Karun hits 150, Ashwin scores 50 as India swell lead

India 568-5 (159 ovs) vs England 477 | Scorecard

Dawson has bowled a lot of overs in this match so far and he looks a bit tired at the moment. He drops short as Karun smashes it through the covers for a four before pulling the next through midwicket for two runs.

Dawson again drops short and gives width as Karun plays the cover drive to perfection for another four before taking a single off the last ball to retain strike.

Part-time medium pacer Keaton Jennings comes into the attack for his first bowl in Test cricket. He starts with a cracker, swinging in sharply to rap Karun on the pads but the confident shout for LBW is turned down.

A few deliveries later, Ashwin flicks a full delivery behind square on the leg side for a fifty to bring up his half-century, his 10th in Tests, from 116 balls.

Another fine innings from the India all-rounder, proving his talent with the bat and also giving India a good chance to push for victory.
13:43   Karun hits 150 as India extend lead on Day 4

India 525-5 (157 ovs) vs England 477 | Scorecard

Karun has used the sweep to good effect against the spinners as this time he hits Rashid through square leg for another four. Ashwin is closing in on another Test fifty as he strokes Dawson through point for a couple to take his score to 43.

Karun again plays the sweep against Rashid, hitting him through the leg side for a four before taking a single.

The last ball is short as Ashwin cuts it past point for the second four of the over to take India past the 550-run mark, in the 157th over, stretching their lead to 75 runs.

With India looking to bat till tea and in the post-tea session, Karun, on 172, has a good chance of converting his hundred into a big double century. He won't get many easy opportunities or a better chance to rake up runs so easily.
13:09

India 525-5 (150 ovs) vs England 477 | Scorecard

India have scored 46 runs in the first 10 overs of the post-lunch session to push the issue a little bit with both Karun and Ashwin hitting a few boundaries and taking regular singles to keep the scoreboard moving.

Moeen drops one short as Karun rocks back and punches it through the covers for another four.

Finally, leg spinner Adil Rashid comes into the attack. He bowled just one over in the morning session and Cook has been reluctant to use him much in this match despite being England's leading wicket taker in this series.

Nair takes a single from the first ball to bring up his 150, from 240 balls, in the 144th over.

Moeen creating a few problems with the ball, as the extra bounce hits Ashwin on the gloves but he will be loving this for sure.

India 417-4 (118 ovs) vs England 477 | Scorecard

Broad nearly accounts for Karun in the same way he did for Kohli, with the slower ball, however, the ball falls short this time around. He edges the last ball but it flies wide of the slip fielder for a four.

09:09   Karun, Vijay hope to build India's total on Day 4

India 391-4 (108 ovs) vs England 477 | Scorecard

Welcome to the coverage of Day 4 of the fifth and final Test between India and England in Chennai, on Monday.

India opener KL Rahul fell agonisingly short of his maiden Test double century as he helped his team to 391 for four in a robust reply to England's first innings total of 477 on the third day.

The elegant right-hander made 199 before throwing his wicket away and squatting at the crease, head-in-hands, after the anti-climactic end to a stellar 311-ball knock.

India, who have taken an unassailable 3-0 lead in the series, finished day three at the M A Chidambaram Stadium, on course for a first-innings lead.

Karun Nair was batting on 71, his maiden Test fifty, at stumps with Murali Vijay, who dropped down the order following a shoulder injury, on 17 at the other end.

They would be hoping to continue their solid batting performance on Day 4 and look to take a good enough lead which would help them push for victory on the final day.
