STUMPS - DAY 2

- NZ 152-1 (47 ovs) vs India 318 | Scorecard

Well, there will be no further play in Kanpur as the umpires have called off play on the second day.

The entire post-tea session has been washed out because of rain which means a total of 34 overs were lost on the second day.

New Zealand were well on placed 152 for one in 47 overs in reply to India's first innings score of 318.

Williamson stroked 65, while Latham made 56 with the duo putting on an unbroken stand of 166 runs for the second wicket to lead New Zealand's strong reply.

They will hope to continue their good work with the bat on Day 3 and look to take a sizeable lead on a pitch which is getting increasingly difficult to bat on.

Play will start early on Day 3, at 9.05am IST, with a total of 98 overs scheduled to be bowled.

RAIN STOPS PLAY

- NZ 152-1 (47 ovs) vs India 318 | Scorecard

The tea interval will continue for much longer as rain has prevented start of play in the post-tea session at the Green Park stadium.

The groundstaff have covered the entire playing area with the drizzle getting quite heavy, not a single part of the outfield is exposed which means that play can get underway when it stops raining.

Stay tuned!
14:14   Williamson, Latham hit 50s to lift NZ to 152-1 at tea

TEA - DAY 2

- NZ 152-1 (47 ovs) vs India 318 | Scorecard

A slight drizzle at the Green Park stadium in Kanpur but not heavy enough to halt proceedings yet.

Another leg before appeal against Williamson, who is again guilty of going back to a full delivery.

The Indians look like striking any moment but so far luck has not been on their side.

Yadav bowls a half-volley on the pads which Williamson drives through the leg side for a four and take New Zealand past the 150-run mark, in the 47th over.

A productive session for New Zealand as they reach 152 for one in 47 overs at the tea break, now trailing India by 166 runs.

Williamson and Latham kept the Indians bowlers at bay, producing the first session of play in this match in which not a single wicket fell.

Williamson battled hard, especially in the last hour of the session, to stay unbeaten on 66 from 115 balls, while Latham made 56 from 137 balls with the duo having added 117 runs so far for the second wicket.

- NZ 143-1 (45 ovs) vs India 318 | Scorecard

Ashwin gets one to turn sharply and there was a puff of dust on the spot where the ball pitched as Williamson is beaten and hit on the pads but the impact is high, saving him from the confident LBW appeal.

Williamson sweeps the fifth ball to fine leg for a single to raise the 100-run stand for the second wicket from 183 balls.

Jadeja struggling to get his rhythm as he drops short again and Williamson eases it through the off-side for a four. However, the left-arm spinner beats him with one that turns away with Williamson also guilty of playing back to a full delivery and is lucky not to have edged it.

Ashwin in middle of a good spell. Latham lets one outside the leg stump go only to see it spin back a long way and pass close to the leg stump.

The last ball is an unplayable delivery and Latham is lucky not to have edged. Ashwin gets it to turn big, from outside leg stump as the left-hander comes forward to defend but the ball passes the edge of the bat.

It's all happening now. Williamson plays another loose shot, playing from the crease to Jadeja, who gets a bit of turn. It was wicketkeeper Saha, who appealed initially, before Jadeja joined in but umpire Kettleborough was unmoved.

The two Indian spinners are all over the Kiwi batsmen as Latham survives a leg before wicket against Ashwin.

Another close shave for Williamson as he comes forward to defend Ashwin but gets an inside edge which goes past the stumps.

A surprise move from Kohli as he gives Jadeja a rest and brings back pacer Yadav to take advantage of some reverse swing.

He also creates some problem for Williamson, as a full delivery moves away late and nearly produces the breakthrough.

13:38   Williamson, Latham hit 50s to put NZ in control

- NZ 134-1 (39 ovs) vs India 318 | Scorecard

Latham completes his half-century, from 119 balls, with two runs courtesy of a punch through the off-side off Ashwin. The next shot is a sweep but can't beat the fielder at short fine leg who has been stationed for the top edge but so far nothing.

In the next over, New Zealand captain Williamson completes his half-century from 121 balls, his 23rd in Tests, with a single on the leg side.

It has been a chanceless innings from the right-hander and except for one delivery when he edged Jadeja which fell short of the slips, he has been in total control.

13:32   Williamson, Latham lead NZ's strong reply

- NZ 127-1 (37 ovs) vs India 318 | Scorecard

Part-timer Murali Vijay is called into the attack in place of Jadeja as India get desperate for a wicket. He produces a beauty, getting one to turn big as Latham is beaten and even the wicketkeeper Saha for four byes. The next ball is short as Latham crashes it through the off-side for a four.

In the next over, Latham survives a leg before wicket appeal against Ashwin as he comes forward to defend but again the decision goes in the batsman's favour.

In the same over, Williamson also survives a LBW chance as Ashwin looks to get into his stride.

Just one over for Ashwin before Jadeja is called back. Latham looks to sweep as gets an inside edge, before the ball hits his shoe and is taken by Rahul at short leg after an initial fumble. TV replays show that the ball hit the grill of the helmet which is why Latham survived that chance and India see a big chance going waste.

Latham still resorts to the sweep, as he hits it to fine leg for a single.

New Zealand continue to bat solidly to reach 127 for one in 37 overs, now trailing India by 191 runs.

Latham is batting on 48, while Williamson is on 49 with the duo having added 92 runs so far for the second wicket.
13:00   Williamson, Latham lead NZ's strong reply

- NZ 103-1 (32 ovs) vs India 318 | Scorecard

India's bowlers, Jadeja and Shami, have not been able to build any sort of impression on the two Kiwi batsmen. The singles have come quite regularly with a few boundary balls in between as the left-right combo has proved to be a problem for the bowlers.

Jadeja oversteps to bowl the first no-ball of the match as NZ reach 97 for one in 30 overs, trailing India by 221 runs.

Kohli continues with his tactics of bowling with seamer from on end as Yadav replaces Shami with Ashwin yet to bowl after lunch. A full delivery which comes in sharply is hit through midwicket where Rahul makes a good stop to save some runs.

Ashwin comes back, replacing Jadeja as India are desperate to make a breakthrough.

Williamson hits the first ball through thirdman for two runs to raise New Zealand's 100, in the 32nd over. He then goes across his crease before paddling Ashwin fine for one and Latham turns the offie on the leg side for a single.

Ashwin gets one to rear off the pitch, hitting Williamson on the jaw protector on the helmet as he comes forward to defend.

Williamson turns the fifth ball again to fine leg for a single as they look to rotate the strike against Ashwin and not let him settle down.

12:43   Williamson, Latham drive New Zealand forward

- NZ 85-1 (27 ovs) vs India 318 | Scorecard

Jadeja has an appeal for a catch at short leg turned down and rightly so as the ball went off Latham's pads and was nowhere close to the bat. All the close-in fielders and the bowler went up in a loud appeal but umpire Rod Tucker was unmoved.

He then resorts to his favourite sweep shot to collect another single. At the other end, Williamson plays a cracking straight drive past mid-off as Shami overpitches. The Kiwi captain is looking in total control out in the middle and is finding it easy to keep the scoreboard moving.

Latham attempts to sweep Jadeja but can't beat the fielder at short fine leg before he gets an edge for a single to thirdman.

Jadeja drops it short and Williamson has enough time to go right back in his crease and slap it through the covers for a four.

Jadeja makes a good comeback, getting one to turn as Williamson comes forward to defend but the edge falls short of Rahane in the slips.
12:20   Williamson, Latham put NZ in control

- NZ 74-1 (23 ovs) vs India 318 | Scorecard

Left-arm spinner Jadeja resumes proceedings after the lunch break. Williamson defends the first two balls before flipping the third through midwicket for two runs and then blocks the remaining three deliveries.

Shami is called back into the attack as India look to make a breakthrough with both Latham and Williamson looking comfortable against the spinners before the lunch interval.

He straightaway starts off from round the wicket to Latham, who is quite watchfully, before he takes a risky single off the last ball to mid-on and is lucky that Rohit missed the direct hit.
11:36   Williamson, Latham steer NZ to 71-1 at lunch on Day 2

LUNCH - DAY 2

- NZ 71-1 (21 ovs) vs India 318 | Scorecard

Ashwin to bowl the final over of the session which Latham sees off easily to end a good morning session for the Kiwis.

New Zealand are looking good on 71 for one in 21 overs, trailing India's score by 247 runs.

Latham has looked quite solid on 25 from 64 balls, while Williamson has eased himself to 21 from 31 balls.

Martin Guptill looked to be aggressive but could only make 21 before he was dismissed by Umesh Yadav.

Earlier, Ravindra Jadeja's breezy unbeaten 42 helped India post 318 in their first innings. Resuming on 291 for nine, Jadeja took the onus of scoring on himself as the pair batted seven overs on the second day. He put on an invaluable stand of 41 runs for the final wicket with last man Umesh Yadav.

11:29   Williamson, Latham put NZ in control

- NZ 71-1 (20 ovs) vs India 318 | Scorecard

Latham plays a risky sweep shot against Ashwin going across a long way and is lucky that he got some gloves on it else he would have been dead in front of the stumps.

Williamson comes down the track and hits a full toss from Ashwin over midwicket for a four.

Latham continues to play the sweep. This time he gets it to deep square leg where Rahul lets it go through and gifts NZ a boundary, maybe there was a bit of bad bounce that played a part.

Williamson looking in total against the spinners, especially against Ashwin. He softly nudges Ashwin behind square on the leg side for two runs before hitting a full toss through midwicket for a four.

Ashwin drops it slightly short as Williamson goes back and plays the late cut for two runs and then picks a single.

Latham again plays a sweep along the ground for one as the left-right combination proves to be a quite tough combo for the two spinners.

After 20 overs, New Zealand are 71 for one in 20 overs, with Latham on 25 and Williamson on 21.
11:14   Yadav dismisses Guptill, NZ lose 1st wicket

- NZ 51-1 (16 ovs) vs India 318 | Scorecard

After a four-over spell, Jadeja makes way for Ravichandran Ashwin. The off-spinner makes a tidy start, conceding just a single from his first over.

Latham looking quite solid as he punches Yadav through midwicket for a couple, while confidently defending the rest of the over.

Williamson paddles Ashwin fine on the leg side for two runs and then punches the next ball through midwicket for two more runs before taking one to deep square leg.

Ashwin struggling to get his right line against right-hander Williamson, bowling too straight and giving away easy runs.

Spin from both ends as Jadeja replaces Yadav, who bowled a good second spell and claimed the wicket of Guptill.

Both Latham and Williamson having no problems against the two spinners bowling in tandem with the scoreboard moving at a good rate.

Latham is batting on 19 from 47 balls, while Williamson is on seven as NZ reach 51 for one in 16 overs.

10:53   Guptill out for 21, NZ lose 1st wicket

- NZ 35-1 (10 ovs) vs India 318 | Scorecard

The odd ball still doing something and the Kiwi openers need to be very careful with their selection on this pitch. Latham does well to defend against Shami in the eighth over before the pacer is replaced by Yadav, after nine overs.

And the move work as Yadav strikes with the third delivery of his new spell. A full delivery which swings sharply hits Guptill on the pads right in front of the stumps to trap Guptill leg before wicket for 21. Guptill played all over that delivery, looking to hit it across the line on the leg side but failed to make connection.

New batsman Kane Williamson gets a similar delivery first up but he hits it straight, down to mid-on as Yadav sends down a wicket-maiden with New Zealand reduced to 35 for one in 10 overs.

10:43   NZ off to a good start after India post 318

- NZ 34-0 (7 ovs) vs India 318 | Scorecard

Change of ends for Shami as Yadav is given a rest after just one over with the new ball.

Guptill going hard at the ball, as he drives a full delivery to mid-off where Rahul misfields to give away two runs. The next ball is flicked to fine leg for a single before Latham defends the rest of the over.

Guptill taking the risk as he slog sweeps Jadeja square on the leg side for a four. Jadeja beats him with the arm ball next up as he is struck on the pads but the umpire rejects the appeal. That was very close as NZ reach 20 for no loss in five overs.

In the next over, Shami tempts Latham to have a good at a wide full delivery which just about goes past Rahane at gully for a four.

Guptill continues his positive approach as he comes down the track and lofts it over mid-off for a four.

Latham looks to sweep one from wide outside the off-stump but Jadeja pitches it in the rough, getting it to bounce and turn, beating both the batsman and wicketkeeper Saha as it goes for four byes.
10:20

- NZ 13-0 (3 ovs) vs India 318 | Scorecard

Mohammed Shami to open the bowling for India and facing him is Martin Guptill with Tom Latham at the other end.

The first ball kicks up after pitching as Guptill lets it go and wicketkeeper Saha collects it at shoulder height. The next ball is again full but doesn't bounce like the previous ball as Guptill drives it through the off-side for a single to get off the mark.

Shami overpitches as left-hander Latham plays a cracking drive square on the off-side for a four to get off the mark in style.

Umesh Yadav to bowl from the other end. He starts with a poor delivery, short and wide, as Guptill crashes it through the covers for a thumping boundary. The next ball again kicks off as Guptill does well to keep it down, behin point for two runs.

This is interesting as Shami is taken off after just one over and he makes way for left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja.

Latham turns the second ball on the leg side for one before Guptill survives a LBW appeal,  but that was clearly heading down the leg side. This will be a big test for Guptill, who has struggled against spinners in the past. He plays a nice drive off the last ball to steal a quick single.

10:04   Jadeja's 42 helps India post 318 in first innings

- India 318-all out (97) vs NZ | Scorecard

Jadeja finishes unbeaten on a quickfire 42 from 44 balls, having hit seven fours and a six, putting on an invaluable stand of 41 runs for the final wicket with Yadav.

They scored 27 runs in seven overs on Day 2 to add some useful runs on a pitch, which should aid the bowlers a lot more as the match progresses.

Murali Vijay (65) and Cheteshwar Pujara (62) scored two half-centuries but got most of their runs in the first session when batting was relatively easier. Ravi Ashwin (40) and Ravi Jadeja (42 not out) made useful contributions lower down the order to push India above the 300-run mark.

The wickets were equally shared by the Kiwi bowlers with Santner and Boult claiming three wickets each, while Wagner bagged a couple and Sodhi and Craig got one wicket apiece.

India would be happy, having managed to cross the 300-run mark and would be looking towards their spinners to make most of the wicket.
09:58   India bowled out for 318 in first innings

- India 318-all out (97) vs NZ | Scorecard

Yadav has not looked into any trouble in his first 20 deliveries, looking to play with a straight bat and defend as much as possible. He does well to take a single off the third delivery to bring Jadeja back on strike.

The left-hander immediately gives Santner the charge and lofts him over long-on for a six before taking a single from the fifth ball.

Interestingly, Yadav is happy to just block everything as he softly taps a full toss back to the bowler.

This is superb batting from Jadeja, who slaps a short delivery from Boult through the off-side for two runs to sweeper cover to keep the runs coming.

The last ball is pitched right up and Jadeja plays a beautiful drive through the covers, timing it to perfection in the gap for a boundary to end the over.

With Jadeja going after Santner, New Zealand bring pace bowler Neil Wagner from the other end.

The bowling change works as Wagner strikes with the last ball of his over. A short ball on the body which Yadav gloves down the leg side to be caught behind for nine.

09:45   Jadeja, Yadav bring up India's 300

- India 304-9 (94) vs NZ | Scorecard

Jadeja not missing out on any opportunity to score. Santner drops one slightly short as Jadeja rocks back and hits it through the off-side for a four. He does well to retain the strike with a single from the last ball which also brings up India's 300 after 93 overs.

In the next over, Jadeja pulls a short ball from Boult but fails to get it off the middle as it falls safely on the leg side. Yadav wants a single as he backs up a long way but Jadeja turns him back. The next ball is full and swings as Jadeja goes for the flick but is beaten.

He has a wild swing off the next ball, looking to smash it over midwicket but gets a thick inside edge which goes to fine leg where Sodhi misfields to give away a four.

Boult smartly bowls two bouncers to end to deny Jadeja the single to retain strike for the next over.
09:37

- India 295-9 (92) vs NZ | Scorecard

Left-arm spinner Santner to open the bowling on Day 2 and facing him is left-hander Ravindra Jadeja, who would be itching to go after the bowlers and score some quick runs.

He defends the first five balls before chipping down the track to the last ball and lofting it over mid-off for a four to get India away on the second day.

As expected, Trent Boult called upon from the other end. Umesh Yadav is showing good temperament to defend everything bowled at him, hoping to stay as long as possible while Jadeja looks to get some runs from the other end.

09:13   India hope to seize back the initiative on Day 2

- India 291-9 (90) vs NZ | Scorecard

Welcome to the coverage of Day 2 of the first Test match between India and New Zealand at the Green Park stadium in Kanpur, on Friday.

It was a great fightback from New Zealand on the opening day as they reduced India to 291 for nine at stumps after the hosts were well placed at 154 for one at one stage.

New Zealand spinner Mitchell Santner and paceman Trent Boult claimed three wickets each to peg back India after Cheteshwar Pujara (62) and Murali Vijay (65) had added 112 runs for the second wicket and rarely looked in any discomfort.

Neil Wagner struck a body blow when he banged it short and enticed captain Virat Kohli (nine) to attempt a pull shot early in his innings, only for the right-hander to top edge a catch to Ish Sodhi.

Batting at six, Rohit Sharma made a fluent 35 but has not fully shown that he can replicate his limited-overs success in the longest format.

Ravichandran Ashwin made 40 but will be expected to make a greater impact with his off-spin bowling in conditions that should suit him.

India would be hoping Ravindra Jadeja (16) and Umesh Yadav (8) can score some useful runs and take them past the 300-run mark.
