Kanpur Test: Vijay, Pujara hit 50s to swell India's lead on Day 3

STUMPS - DAY 3

India dominated the third day to finish on 159 for one at stumps, extending their overall lead to 215 runs with nine wickets in hand.

Vijay stroked an unbeaten 64 from 152 balls, while Pujara stroked his way to 50 from 80 balls with the duo having added 107 runs for the second wicket so far.

New Zealand failed to take a wicket in the post-tea session as India scored at a good rate to amass 107 runs in 28.5 overs.

New Zealand must be disappointed at how things unfolded on Day 3 after they had resumed on a strong position at 152 for one but were bowled out for 262.

The lower order capitulated without a fight as the last five wickets fell for just seven runs in the space of 28 balls.

Sodhi comes back and he bowls one which turns big and kicks up a lot more than expected as he gets it to pitch on the rough from round the wicket. Immediately, Vijay calls for the helmet and then turns a full ball through midwicket for one.

For the first time in the match, New Zealand have been totally outplayed in a session with both Pujara and Vijay scoring runs at a good pace to build India's lead.

Sodhi drops short as Pujara pulls it square on the leg side for a four to raise the 100-run stand from 162 balls.

The next ball is again short and Pujara plays the pull shot yet again but hits Latham at short leg flush on the helmet but the Kiwi is good to continue after the physio comes out to check on him.

Santner to bowl the final over of the day. He starts with a short ball which Pujara cuts to the fielder at deep point to get a single and take his score to 49.

Vijay tucks the next ball on the leg side for one to bring his partner back on strike.

Pujara also plays a similar shot for a single to raise his second half-century of the match from 80 balls.

Pujara continues to get the boundaries as he finds the gap in the covers to perfection for another splendid four to take his score to 36, from 39 balls with the help of seven fours.

Vijay looks to continue the momentum as he comes down the track and lofts Craig down the ground for a six.

With around 10-12 overs to go in the day as New Zealand look to build the pressure with a few tight overs.

Vijay looks to break the shackles as he comes down the track to Craig but gets an inside edge for a single on the leg side.

India are well placed on 146 for on 41 overs, having stretched their lead to over 200 runs now.

Vijay is looking in total control on 62, while Pujara has eased his way to 42 with the duo having already 94 runs for the second wicket.

A desperate New Zealand bring in part-timer Martin Guptill to bowl some part-time off-spin.

Part-timer Guptill bowling to heavy leg side field, with six fielders on the leg side and just three on the off-side.

None of three New Zealand specialist spinners are out in operation as India continue to milk the bowlers around to keep the scoreboard moving.

A couple of overs later, Vijay brings up his second half-century of the match from 106 balls with a single on the leg side.

Pujara gives Guptill the charge and hits a full toss down the ground for a four as India reach 120 for on in 32 overs, to stretch their lead to 176 runs.

A desperate Williamson brings his best spinner Santner back into the attack, looking to stop the flow of runs and also break this threatening partnership.

No stopping Pujara, who is scoring at a strike rate of more than 150, as he goes back and cuts a short ball from Sodhi, hitting it on the bounce over the slip fielder to take his score to 20, with all runs coming from boundaries.

Santner also suffers as Vijay hits him for a couple of boundaries to get 10 runs from the 26th over.

New batsman Cheteshwar Pujara gets off the mark with a boundary, cutting a short ball from Sodhi through the point region.

The next ball is short as Pujara rocks back and pulls it through midwicket for another boundary as India start off in positive fashion after the tea break.

Vijay also joins the party as he sweeps Craig through square leg for a four and two balls later repeats the shot for another four.

Pujara is gifted a short ball as he hits his third four in a row as New Zealand leak a lot of boundaries after the break.

The flow of boundaries continues as this time Vijay and Pujara hit a boundary off Sodhi to make it seven fours in the space of 11 deliveries.

Pujara has raced to 16 from 10 balls, while Vijay has made 28 from 66 balls with India reaching 82 for one in 21 overs for an overall lead of 138 runs.

TEA -DAY 3

Leg-spinner Ish Sodhi makes the breakthrough just before the tea break with the key wicket of Rahul, who is caught at first slip after a fluent innings of 38.

That wicket forces the tea break to be taken with India looking good on 52 for one in 18.1 overs for an overall lead of 108 runs.

Rahul played a fine innings of 38, having hit eight fours, putting on a good opening stand with Vijay, who is unbeaten on 14, to lay a solid foundation for his team.

This time Vijay decides to adopt a positive approach as he throws his bat at a wide delivery but gets a thick outside edge which goes past the fielder at wide slip for his first boundary.

Rahul taking a few risks as he goes after a wide delivery from Craig, playing it uppishly past point for another four.

Rahul's positive approach has helped Vijay take his time to get settled as runs have come at a good rate with the lead growing steadily.

This time Rahul paddle sweeps Santner fine on the leg side for a four to take India's lead past the 100-run mark. While hitting the boundaries, Rahul has been quite solid with his defence to lay a solid foundation for his team.

He brings out the reverse sweep yet again for a four through the thirdman region to take India past the 50-run mark, in the 16th over.

He tries to sweep Craig yet again but fails to make connection and is struck on the pads. The Kiwis all go up in appeal but Rahul immediately shows his bat to the umpire who rules it not out.

Rahul is getting the boundaries coming at regular intervals. This time he plays the ramp shot to good effect as he guides a short ball over the slips for a four to race to 19.

Immediately, New Zealand station a fielder back at thirdman, halfway down to the fence to stop him playing that shot again.

Rahul in the look out for runs. This time, he reverse sweeps off-spinner Craig for a four fine on the off-side and tries the sweep off the next delivery but can't beat the fielder at short fine.

India have made a good start as they reach 33 for no loss in 10 overs with Rahul on 24 from 29 balls and Vijay on nine from 31 balls.

Two overs for Boult with the new ball before he makes way for off-spinner Mark Craig.

Vijay edges the second ball past the slip fielder for two runs before he punches it down the ground to long-on for one.

Rahul gets the first boundary of India's second innings as he paddle sweeps Craig fine on the leg side for a four.

In the next over bowled by Santner, Rahul shows his intent as he lofts a full delivery over mid-off for a four. That will put pressure on the New Zealand team as they also need to keep the flow of runs in check, while also look to take wickets.

Bowling change as Neil Wagner comes into the attack in place of Craig. He tries a couple of bouncers at Vijay, who is happy to see off the over without much fuss.

Rahul again targets Santner as he goes down the track and lofts him over mid-on for a four. Two balls later he looks to tuck it on the leg side but ends up hitting it straight to Latham at short leg who barely has time to react, forget holding the catch.

India off to a confident start as they reach 23 for no loss in eight overs, as the lead quickly grows to 79.

The two Indian openers -- Murali Vijay and KL Rahul -- stride out to the middle in confident fashion, having secured a vital lead after NZ were in control for most part of the first two days.

Boult to open the bowling Rahul gets off the mark with a single from the first delivery and Vijay takes one from the fifth ball.

New Zealand waste no time in bringing in the spinners as left-arm spinner Santner, who spent a lot of the time at the crease with the bat, is called to bowl the second over.

He starts with a good testing over to Vijay, who manages to see it off for a maiden over.

India's openers content to play the singles and get their eye in before attempt to play some shots as they reach four for no loss in three overs.

New Zealand lose four wickets for four runs off the last 10 deliveries to be bowled out for 262 and concede a vital 56-run first innings lead.

Jadeja triggered the collapse with three wickets in a single over to end with superb figures of five for 73 in 34 overs.

Ashwin was again superb with the ball, as he claimed four for 93 in 30.5 overs, while Yadav bagged the other wicket.

New Zealand must be disappointed at how things unfolded on Day 3 after they had resumed on a strong position at 152 for one.

The lower order capitulated without a fight as the last five wickets fell for just seven runs in the space of 28 balls.

With the pitch getting more and more difficult for batting, India's 56-run lead might just prove to be decisive.

However, Ashwin gets his revenge two balls later as Watling lobs a simple catch straight back to the bowler to be dismissed for 21.

Jadeja gets Mark Craig with one that stays low as the left-hander stays back to defend but misses and is trapped leg before wicket.

He survived a close shout off the previous ball but this time he was all gone once he missed it as he makes his way back for two.

He strikes again off the next delivery as Ish Sodhi is also trapped leg before wicket for a first-ball duck.

Jadeja on a hat-trick but Trent Boult avoids it as he defends a full delivery watchfully.

The right-hander defends the last ball but it goes off his feet and Rohit at silly point takes a good low catch diving forward to claim the third wicket of the over.

That is Jadeja's fifth wicket of the innings as New Zealand are reduced to 258 for nine, in the 95th over.

After a few listless overs from the pacers, Kohli decides to bring back his spinners. Watling plays an uppish shot square on the off-side but gets it in the gap for a four.

The few overs of pace will have given the Kiwi batsmen some confidence and got them settled before the spinners were brought back.

Ashwin is called back and he strikes with his very first delivery. Santner gets a thin edge and is caught behind after a good knock of 32, from 107 balls.

New Zealand are 257 for six in 92 overs, trailing India by 61 runs. India would be hoping to finish off the remaining four wickets as soon as possible and take some lead going into the second innings.

With the ball just five overs old, India begin the post lunch session with pacers from both ends.

Yadav bowls the first over of the second session. The fifth ball is on the pads as Watling flicks it fine for a boundary to get his team off and running after the lunch interval.

Shami bowls a good delivery first up beating left-hander Santner outside the off-stump. However, he punches the last ball down the ground past mid-off for a four as New Zealand make a confident start after the break.

LUNCH- DAY 3

At lunch on Day 3, New Zealand are 238 for five in 85 overs, trailing India by 80 runs.

India made a good comeback in the morning session, claiming four wickets for 86 runs in the 38 overs bowled.

Santner did well to frustrate the Indians with a dogged innings of 28 not out from 90 balls. Ronchi played a vital knock of 38, putting on 49 runs for the fifth wicket with Santner to steady the visitors after a flurry of wickets in the morning.

Ashwin struck an early blow on Day 3 when he had Latham leg before for 58 and Taylor fell in the same fashion to Jadeja for a duck.

Williamson, who made 75, was done in by a big turning delivery from Ashwin, while Ronchi became Jadeja's second victim.

LUNCH- DAY 3

India take the second new ball straightaway after 80 overs. Shami finally comes into the attack after a long break and he starts with a poor delivery, swinging and down the leg side as its hits Santner's pads and goes for four leg byes.

Ashwin to bowl from the other end as he gets the brand new cherry. Santner smashes the fifth ball straight back down the ground past mid-off for a four to take his score to 22.

Just one over for Shami with the new ball before Jadeja is called back into the attack.

Watling survives a huge appeal for LBW as he goes back to defend but the impact is high, above the knee roll as the umpire turns down the appeal.

Santner gives Ashwin the charge and lofts him back over his head for a boundary as he continues to grow in confidence with the bat.

With 30 minutes to go for lunch, Kohli brings back Ashwin to bowl in tandem with Jadeja and hope to claim a wicket or two before the lunch break.

But after a couple of overs he gives Ashwin, maybe to bring him back with the new ball after 80 overs as part-timer Rohit Sharma is called into the attack.

Ronchi wastes no opportunity as he hits Rohit through the off-side for a four and keeps strike with a single from the last ball.

Jadeja makes the breakthrough with the wicket of Ronchi, who is trapped leg before wicket for 38. He tries to sweep Jadeja but misses a full delivery and is struck right in front of the stumps to walk back after a good innings.

New batsman BJ Watling was nearly done in by the quicker delivery from Jadeja as he played right back and nearly ended up falling over as he tried to defend.

New Zealand are 220 for five in 80 overs, still trailing India by 98 runs.

Jadeja gets Ronchi to edge one but it falls short of Rahane in the slips and a few deliveries later, Ronchi hits a slightly short delivery through the covers for a four.

A longish spell for Yadav who is getting some reverse swing but unable to cause too many problems for the batsmen but no signs of Mohammed Shami yet.

Jadeja gets one to turn and bounce as Ronchi is beaten with Saha whipping off the bails in a flash and the appeal for stumping is referred to the third umpire but is turned down with the batsman's feet inside the crease.

Jadeja comes back as Ashwin gets a break after a good spell, his figures so far read, 2 for 73 in 24 overs, including two crucial strikes on the third day.

After a shaky start, Ronchi looking quite solid now and is deal quite well with the Indian spinners.

Three singles from Yadav's 10th over takes New Zealand past the 200-run mark in the 69th over.

A rare loose delivery from Ashwin as Ronchi takes full toll of a short wide delivery, crashing it through the covers for a much-needed four for the Kiwis.

Later in the over, Santner takes a chance as he heaves Ashwin over midwicket for a four. That was risky under the circumstances and the Indians won't mind it at all.

Ronchi and Santner building together a partnership to bail their team out of trouble.

Meanwhile, Ashwin has a huge appeal for leg before wicket turned down against Santner. The left-hander was beaten by one which went straight on and struck on the back pad but the umpire turned down the huge appeal from Ashwin.

Good decision from Rod Tucker as the ball first brushed the front pad and then hit the back pad, clearly the ball would have gone on to miss the leg stump.

Vijay is taken off after three overs and is replaced by pace bowler Umesh Yadav as Kohli not letting the game drift.

Yadav bowls it full and looks for some reverse swing but is kept out by the two Kiwi batsmen in his first over.

Ashwin seems to be tiring out. A few loose deliveries, full and wide outside the off-stump. Ronchi gets a single from the first ball but gets a four off the fourth ball as he plays a delightful cover drive.

Ashwin goes round the wicket but drops short and Ronchi punches it off the backfoot through the covers for another four.

Strange tactics from Kohli as he brings in part-timer Murali Vijay to replace Jadeja. He has a big appeal for LBW turned down against left-hander Mitchell Santner with a clear inside edge coming to the rescue.

Both off-spinners rushing through their overs as New Zealand look to defend and tire out the spinners.

They are 172 for four in 60 overs, still trailing India by 146 runs with six wickets in hand.

Jadeja gets Ronchi to edge one which flies past Rahane in the slips for a four. He is struggling to read the spinners and looks rushed even with his defensive shot.

Williamson plays a risky sweep shot against Ashwin in the next over as it flies in the vacant space behind square on the leg side for three runs.

Ashwin then gets the big wicket of Williamson with a splendid delivery, which turns miles to knock back the stumps. It pitched well outside the off-stump as Williamson looks to play it through the off-side but could not keep it out as it spun sharply back into the stumps.

A top knock from the Kiwi captain, who made 75 from 137 balls, but struggled to get going on Day 3.

A good fightback from the Indians on Day 3 as they claim three wickets for 18 runs in nine overs bowled by the two spinners.

Ross Taylor doesn't last long as Jadeja gets him leg before wicket for a two-ball duck as New Zealand are rocked back early on Day 3.

The arm ball from Jadeja does the trick as Taylor is caught on the crease trying to defend but ends up getting hit on the pads right in front of the stumps.

Luke Ronchi is the new batsman for New Zealand at No. 5, he is playing as a specialist batsman in this line-up.

Ronchi looks keen to adopt a positive approach against the spinners, going hard against the two spinners and looking to get some runs.

Jadeja also doing well to again beat Williamson, who looks to come forward and defend but the ball spins enough to go past his defences. He bowled it a bit slower than usual and got more spin than his other deliveries. Top bowling from the two Indian spinners, making the Kiwi batsmen work hard to even survive.

Ashwin bowls another beauty which beats Latham before he is trapped leg before wicket off the next ball.

Latham plays down the wrong line to a full delivery and is struck right in front of the stumps to be dismissed LBW after a fine innings of 58 from 151 balls, having added 124 runs for the second wicket with Williamson.

Ashwin finally strikes, in his 17th over, to give India an early breakthrough on Day 3.

Ravichandran Ashwin opens proceedings for India on Day 3. He starts with a full toss which Kane Williamson drives through the covers for a couple to get going on the third day.

Ashwin looking to bowl it full and wide and make the right-hander drive against the turn through the off-side.

Williamson plays a risky sweep which goes uppishly but falls well short of Umesh Yadav at fine leg, for a single.

Left-hander Latham also takes a quiet single on the leg side as two runs come from the first over of the day.

Spin from both ends to start the third day as Jadeja is called to bowl from the other end.

The first ball kicks up from length as Latham lets it go before he sweeps the next from well outside the off-stump for a single. Williamson turns the third ball on the leg side for two runs through the leg side before he is beaten by a beauty from Jadeja, as he comes forward to defend only to see it spin past the face of the bat with some extra bounce.

Ashwin getting the ball to rip and bounce as left-hander Latham is beaten comprehensively. He manages to see off another good over from Ashwin, who is looking very threatening on Day 3.

Welcome to the coverage of Day 3 of the first Test between India and New Zealand in Kanpur, on Saturday.

The entire post-tea session was washed out on Day 2 because of rain.

New Zealand were well on placed 152 for one in 47 overs at stumps in reply to India's first innings score of 318.

Williamson stroked 65, while Latham made 56 with the duo putting on an unbroken stand of 166 runs for the second wicket to lead New Zealand's strong reply.

Play will start early on Day 3, at 9.05am IST, with a total of 98 overs scheduled to be bowled.
