India take the second new ball after 82 overs and the spinners continue, with the brand new ball.

Boult plays out another maiden over from Jadeja before Sodhi goes after Ashwin, hitting it over midwicket for a six.

But Ashwin gets revenge immediately to bowl out Sodhi for 17. He bowled a seam up delivery which went straight on and Sodhi, who moved across the stumps, missed it and was bowled.

That gave Ashwin his 19th five-wicket haul in Test cricket in just his 37th match.

In the next over, he survives a huge appeal for LBW as he comes forward to defend but is struck on the pads.

Ashwin finally gets his first wicket of the day and it is the key wicket of Santner, who is caught by Rohit after a fine innings of 71.

That gripped the pitch, turned big and bounced more than expected and Santer, who was committed to playing at it can only fend it to Rohit close on the off-side.

Santner played a superb innings, looked very solid and it needed a special delivery to get him out.

India bowled a total of 36 overs in the morning session, claiming three wickets for 112 runs.

Ronchi and Santner frustrated India quite a lot during the 102-run partnership in the morning session with the former hitting a fluent 80 from 120 balls.

Ashwin is yet to get a wicket on Day 5, but Shami's double strike brought India closer to victory as he claimed the wickets of Watling and Craig with successive deliveries a few overs before the lunch break.

The next ball is again full and this time Santner flicks it stylish through square leg for a four.

Ish Sodhi is facing the hat-trick ball with a lot of men around the bat.

That was so close to the hat-trick. Another good inswinging delivery which beats Sodhi, stays a bit low and passes close to the stumps.

Santner is also beaten by another good delivery, hit on the pads, but doing a bit too much to be considered for the leg before appeal.

BJ Watling is also quite handy with the bat. He also looks to be positive, sweeping Jadeja square on the leg side for his first boundary. In the next over, he cuts a short ball from Ashwin through point for another four.

Jadeja has a huge appeal for LBW turned down against Santner, who just can't believe that umpire Richard Kettleborough didn't give it out.

That was a very good partnership for New Zealand as Ronchi and Santner added 102 runs for the fifth wicket.

NZ 158-4 (56 ovs); Target: 434 | Scorecard

A change in the bowling for India as Yadav replaces Jadeja, who has bowled 20 overs for 20 runs, including nine maidens, in this innings. He has a confident appeal for leg before wicket turned down against Ronchi off the last ball as it looked slightly down the leg side.

In the next over, Santner pulls a short ball from Ashwin through midwicket for a four. A few deliveries later Ronchi chips down the track and lofts Ashwin over mid-on for another four as the Kiwis look to score some runs after a slow start in the morning.

Yadav nearly foxes Ronchi with the slower ball as he looks to loft it down the ground but mistimes and still ends up getting it over mid-on for a four.

Jadeja comes back to replace Ashwin as he hits the first ball through the point region for two runs and then drives the next through the covers for three runs.

Santner slog sweeps the last ball over midwicket for a six as New Zealand's batsmen decide to open up and score some runs on a pitch which seems to have eased up.

Ronchi has changed gears as he flicks pacer Yadav over midwicket for a four  to take New Zealand past the 150-run mark, in 55 overs.

He then smashes one straight back past over Jadeja for a four to take his score to 80, having hit nine fours and a six in his 116-ball knock. That also raises the 100-run stand from 207 balls for the fifth wicket with Santner as the duo continue to frustrate the Indians.

New Zealand have scored 39 runs from the last six overs to take their score to 158 for four in 56 overs.

09:56   Ronchi hits half-century to keep India's spinners at bay

-
NZ 119-4 (50 ovs); Target: 434 | Scorecard

It has been a good fighting partnership from these two New Zealand with the duo bringing up their 50-run stand for the fifth wicket.

Ashwin changes his line to Santner, bowling it outside the leg-stump and nearly gets one to bowl him round the legs.

Ronchi drives Jadeja along the ground to long-off for one and Santner turns the last ball fine on the leg side for two runs.

Ronchi looks to cut Ashwin but can't get the ball in the gap courtesy of some extra bounce. However, he plays a nice drive off the next ball through the covers for two runs to complete his half-century from 83 balls. Once again, a very good knock from Ronchi, who was brought into the side as a specialist batsman.

Ronchi's footwork has been quite positive, and he has been fearless while driving the ball, forcing India to push back a few fielders.

Santner also growing in confidence as he rocks back and cuts a short ball Ashwin past point for a four.

After 50 overs, New Zealand reach 119 for four, still needing another 315 runs for victory.

Ronchi is looking good on 53 from 90 balls, while Santner has defended well for 19 from 96 balls with the duo putting on 63 runs so far for the fifth wicket.

-
NZ 107-4 (45 ovs); Target: 434 | Scorecard

Ronchi gets the first run of the day as he punches it to the covers for a single to bring Santner on strike against Jadeja, with a lot of rough outside his off-stump.

But he continues to defend, trying to play as late and as straight as possible to keep the Indian spinners at bay.

Ronchi looks to hit Ashwin through the off-side but it stays a bit low. Later in the over, he manages to fend a rising delivery from Ashwin past the slip fielder for a single.

While Santner is defending everything, Ronchi is still looking for every opportunity to score. He turns Jadeja against the turns through midwicket for a single to take his score to 41.

Jadeja nearly gets one to break through Santner's defence as a sharp turning delivery beats his forward defence but hits him high on the pads. He then looks to slog sweep the next ball but fails to make proper connection.

Santner finally gets his first runs on Day 5, from the 26th ball he faces in the morning session, giving Ashwin the charge and lofting him over mid-on for a four to take his score to 12.

Ronchi plays another good drive through the covers for a four as New Zealand reach 107 for four in 45 overs.

-
NZ 93-4 (40 ovs); Target: 434 | Scorecard

Ravichandran Ashwin to open the bowling for India on Day 5 with the hosts needing six wickets for victory with three full sessions of play left.

Mitchell Santner defends the first ball before the next one spins across the left-hander who is beaten and then can only sport a smile.

The last ball is even more vicious with a lot of bounce and turn and wicketkeeper Saha does well to get it in his gloves to end a good first over from Ashwin. That pitched on and around the leg-stump and spun right across Santner, who must consider himself lucky not to have edged it.

As expected Ravindra Jadeja is on from the other end. He gets one to kick-off from the rough outside the Ronchi's leg stump, another unplayable delivery. It won't be long before one takes the edge and gives India an early breakthrough.

Santner has shown great resolve but he is looking completely at sea against Ashwin right now. Ashwin gets one to beat the left-hander again, bowling it a bit slow and getting it to turn enough.

Three maidens over in a row to start off Day 5.

09:01   Kanpur Test: India eye big win on Day 5
Welcome to the coverage of the fifth and final day of the first Test between India and New Zealand in Kanpur, Monday.

After setting New Zealand a mammoth 434 for victory, India are sitting pretty after reducing the visitors to 93 for four at stumps on the fourth day.

Luke Ronchi (38) and Mitchell Santner (eight) will return on Day 5 hoping to resist or at least delay India's victory march in the first match of the three-Test series.

Ravichandran Ashwin (3-68), who dismissed four frontline Kiwi batsmen in the first innings, proved once again why he is considered India's premier spinner.

The off-spinner had Martin Guptill caught at silly point for a duck with the first ball of his second over and trapped Tom Latham (two) leg before with the fifth.

Ashwin claimed his 200th Test wicket when he dismissed New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson (25) leg before.

Ross Taylor (17) then ran himself out to compound the tourists' misery.
