Stumps are called as Sri Lanka end the day on 50 for 2 in reply to India's 622 for 9 declared.

Lanka still trail India by a massive 572 runs with Chandimal and Mendis at the crease. 

In the last over of the day, Chandimal sweeps Ashwin over deep mid-wicket for a four and to bring up the team 50.

Since the fall of the wicket of Karunaratne, India have bowled 4 maidens. 

Lanka being tested as the spinners are getting some purchase. 

Dinesh Chandimal comes to the crease and almost immediately takes on Ashwin. He smashes the bowler for a huge six over deep square leg off the 2nd ball he's faced.

Just when Sri Lanka were looking like they were settling in they lose a wicket. 

Ashwin gets some turn, Karunaratne goes after it, gets the outside edge to give Rahane an easy catch at slip.

Karunaratne goes for 25 off 45.

Karunaratne uses his feet well to meet the half-volley and send it to the boundary through covers.

Jadeja continues and the Sri Lankans are finding it tough to pierce the field. 

Jadeja hits the batsman flush on the front leg, the on field umpire gives not but India insist on going for the review.

They take the review and replays show it's not out.

India's spinners are getting some turn and asking questions of Lankan batsmen.

Kusal Mendis sweeps Ashwin for a four through square leg. Five runs come off that over.

Jadeja is also getting some good turn, foxing the batsman.

Ashwin gets some turn and bounce and Karunaratne is all over the place.

Ashwin is testing the batsmen here with a drifter.

Karunaratne plays the short ball for a quick couple.

The batsmen run quickly, putting pressure on the fielder and they get four overthrows.

Jadeja replaces Shami and he has 2 slips and a short point in place for Mendis and Jadeja starts with a maiden. 

Ashwin continues and Karunaratne starts with 2 runs off the over. 

Ashwin gets some turn and Karunaratne is beaten twice. 

Karunaratne gets Sri Lanka their first boundary, he punches the ball down the ground and it races past R Ashwin to meet the advertising hoardings.

Sri Lanka pick 6 runs off the Shami over. 

No 3 batsman Kusal Mendis gets off the mark to open Sri Lanka's account. 

Shami continues and he bowls a good line. The ball keeps low and makes Mendis play, who luckily misses.

Kohli throws the ball to R Ashwin who will open the bowling at the other end. 

Tharanga is challenged at get go and he is gone! 

Short ball and Tharanga tries to play the ball to the on side. The ball goes right into the chest of KL Rahul at short leg, who does well to hang on to the ball to dismiss the batsman for a duck.

Karunaratne and Tharanga open the batting for Sri Lanka. 

Shami starts around the wicket and he gets good bounce. Well taken by Saha and he starts with a maiden.

India declare on 622 for 9 after 158 overs.

Jadeja has played a good hand with 70 off 85 balls to prop India's total late in the innings.

This is India's 2nd highest total vs Sri Lanka in Sri Lanka.

Jadeja continues the onslaught and sends Herath for a six over long-off.

He is getting good support from Yadav who is running well between wickets and attempts the odd slog.

He slogs Perera on the on side for a four and that is the declaration.

Jadeja continues to go after the bowling and this time hitting Dilruwan Perera for a four to bring up 600 runs for India on the scoreboard.

Umesh Yadav gets off the mark with a single.

India stepping on the gas here and this time it's Shami going after Herath. 

He takes the veteran left-armer for two big sixes before holing out to Upul Tharanga at deep mid-wicket. That ends Shami's 19-run cameo.

Jadeja gets back-to-back boundaries and reaches his half-century -- 51 off just 70 balls -- and he celebrates in his unique fashion.

Sri Lanka have struck just three overs after tea, 

Herath gets the wicket of Saha off the very first over of his new spell.

Herath sends the ball in a bit quicker, beats Saha who comes down the tracks, nice take by the keeper who breaks the stumps in one action.

Saha gone for 57. 

India go into tea at 553 for 7 with Saha and Jadeja having completed their 50-run partnership.

India scored 111 runs in this second session, having lost 2 wickets.

It looks really tough for Sri Lanka as the visitors pile on the runs.

Dhananjaya de Silva comes into the attack, replacing Pushpakumara.

The Indians are getting easy runs here. There is no challenge whatsoever from the Lankan bowlers. 

Seems like the Lankan bowlers are out to frustrate Saha. Pushpakumara has a slip in place but Saha finally gets to his 50 with a shot down to long-off. 

Jadeja then goes after the Pushpakumara and hits a six straight over the bowler's head.

Dilurawan continues and Saha is still stuck on 49 not out.

Pushpakumara continues and he does well to keep the scoring in check. Jadeja tries to go after the bowler but only gets a single down to long off for his effort. 

Dilruwan, who has replaced Herath has given just 4 runs in his two overs. 

The game has slowed down even more since the fall of Hardik Pandya. 

Jadeja is struggling to get going with 9 runs off 27 deliveries while Saha is inching towards another Test 50.

India bring up the 500 as Jadeja hits Pushpakumara through mid-wicket for a single.

Saha holding fort for India and getting close to another Test fifty, He is batting responsibly and getting runs at will, punishing the bad ones. 

Pandya is also slowly but surely picking up the pace in his scoring. He has walloped Pushpakumara for consecutive boundaries now batting  more than a run a ball. 

Hardik tries to go after Pushpakumara and the bowler gets his man!

Hardik dances down the track and is beaten by the flight, he sends the ball straight down the throat of Angelo Mathews at long on.

Sri Lanka lose a review. Pandya gets struck flush on the back pad. Herath and the Lankans go up. No says the on-field umpire.

Lanka captain asks for DRS. The review shows the ball pitching in line but the height factor saved Pandya.

Saha settling in well and is going along nicely in the company of Hardik Pandya who is slow . 

He us cleaned bowled off the very next ball. Herath bowls it in a little quicker and Ashwin is beaten all ends up. 

Ashwin goes for 54 and India lose their 6th!

R Ashwin gets to his 50 in style. He goes down the track and sends Herath for a one-bounce four to get to his half-century and get to his 2000 runs in Tests.

Pushpakumara starts proceedings after lunch and gives away just 2 runs.

That is lunch and India have scored 98 runs in the morning session on Day 2.

This first session has gone to Sri Lanka who have picked 2 wickets in the 30 overs bowled before lunch.

India have not done too badly either, batting at 3.27 runs an over and Ashwin closing in on another Test 50. 

It was a see-saw battle in that session but Lanka left-armer Pushpakumara has done well to keep the scoring in check since taking out Rahane.

This a good battle as Pushpakumara as Ashwin nears his 50. 

He has put a slip for Saha and he is bowling in the right area giving nothing away and that is another maiden.

The bowlers have put a lid on the scoring since the wicket of Rahane.

Lanka fielders are also impressive, not allowing 

This is a crucial period of play for both teams as lunch nears. 

With the fall of Rahane, India will look to get to a decent enough total with Ashwin and Saha batting steadily.

Sri Lanka on the other hand will look to take another wicket to force lunch early.

Saha gets off the mark with a four off Perera but there is very little that they are giving away. 

Ashwin is going strong on 39, while Saha is slowly getting the runs against his name. 

Perera and Pushpakumara have kept India's scoring down and Rahane has gone for 132.

Rahane is beaten and Dickwella just collects the ball and removes the stumps. 

Saha comes in and that is a wicket-maiden.

Sri Lanka make a smart move as Pushpakumara comes around a wicket to Ashwin. 

Ashwin goes after Pushpakumara and gets a boundary through point. 

Perera gives away 3 runs. 

Slow left-arm bowler Pushpakumara brought in to bowl and he gives away five runs in the over. 

India batsmen are content with the ones and twos and the odd boundary. Sri Lanka on the other hand are not bowling a challenging spell, they are just going through the grind.

Ashwin again plays on the backfoot and sends Dilurawan for 3 runs through 3rd man. The field is shuffled around a bit and Rahane gets another 2 runs on the off side. 

Rahane whips one off his pads, gets a run on the on side and brings up the 50-run partnership and 400 on the board as drinks are called.

Herath offers width and Ashwin just times it well for a boundary through point. 

India mixing it up well, the boundaries and the ones and twos adding to the tally on the scoreboard as Herath gives 8 in that over. 

Spinners operating at both ends now and Herath gives away just one run and the next over Dilurawan gives away 2 runs.

Sri Lanka make bowling change as off-break bowler Diluwan Perera brought in.

He starts off with a short ball and Rahane cuts it square for a boundary.

The bowler is getting some turn and Ashwin has some problem reading him. 

Ashwin and Rahane now holding fort for India well. Ashwin in particular is scoring at a brisk pace while Rahane has taken a backseat.

Ashwin is getting the odd boundary and the batsmen are running the ones at will.

Karunaratne is getting some seam movement but him bowling the odd bad ball and he gets punished. 

Centurions on the opening day of the 2nd Test, Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane, would like to continue from there they left off as play is set to resume shortly on Day 2.

India are in the driver's seat and with a placid track, it is only expected of  the visitors to pile the pressure on the hosts.
