Shami then left Sri Lanka in a total mess with the wickets of Pushpakumara (1) and Mendis (12) in successive overs in an excellent spell of fast bowling in the morning session.

With not much batting to follow for the hapless, India would be pushing to finish off the match on Day 3 itself.

Double bowling change as Kuldeep comes in for Umesh and he starts his new spell with a maiden over to Mathews.

Infact, it turns out to be a change of ends for Umesh as Pandya is taken off after just one over.

Kuldeep beats Mathews with one that turns in and hits him on the pads but the leg before wicket appeal is turned down.

Shami bowls another excellent delivery, as he gets Mathews to edge one as it goes past the slips for a four. He then clips the fifth ball through square leg for a couple and repeats the shot off the last ball for the same result.

Dinesh Chandimal shuffles across a long way and looks to sweep Ashwin but misses and the LBW appeal is turned down with the impact well outside the off-stump. He is beaten again a few deliveries trying to play the sweep and yet again the point of impact is outside the line of off-stump.

Umesh Yadav comes into the attack, replacing Shami, who bowled a splendid spell first up on Day 3 to leave Sri Lanka in a complete mess, picking up the wickets of Pushpakumara and Mendis.

The first ball is a full delivery as Chandimal drives it down the ground past mid-off for a couple and then picks a single.

Ashwin also looking very threatening as Mendis is caught in two minds, initially looking to sweep but tapping it on the leg side for one.

Shami drops a bit short and gives some width as Mendis cuts it past point for his second four.

And Shami gets revenge immediately off the next ball with the wicket of Mendis, who shuffles across and looks to play across the line but is beaten and is dismissed leg before wicket for 12.

Interestingly, Sri Lanka don't take the review as Mendis walks straight off after having a small chat with his captain Chandimal. And unbelievably, the ball tracker shows that the ball was slipping down the leg side and would have missed the leg stump.

Shami bowls a beauty to new batsman Angelo Mathews, extra bounce and movement as the right-hander has a poke and nearly gets the outside edge.

Young chinaman spinner Kuldeep Yadav to open the bowling for India on Day 3. Left-hander Dimuth Karunaratne defends the first two balls before he flicks the third ball through the leg side for a four.

He is struck on the pads off the last ball but the stifled appeal for leg before wicket doesn't interest the umpire.

Mohammed Shami to start off from the other end. He is bang on target off the first ball, a full delivery on the stumps which shapes in enough to beat nightwatchman Malinda Pushpakumara, but the appeal for LBW is turned down. He tries it again but this time it goes wide down the leg side with Saha unable to collect it cleanly to give away two byes.

Shami has settled into a good rhythm already as Pushpakumara is beaten twice in the over.

Just one over for Kuldeep before Ravichandran Ashwin comes into the attack and he strikes in his first over of the third day with the wicket of Karunaratne, who is caught at slip for 16.

Ashwin bowls it quicker as he gets it to bounce and turn and Karunaratne, who was committed into playing it, has a poke but the extra bounce takes the glove and Rahane completes a regulation catch.

Second innings man Karunaratne is dismissed quite early on Day 3 as Sri Lanka are faced with the prospect of batting nightmare.

New batsman Kusal Mendis plays right back and is squared up as he somehow keeps it out. Ashwin gets another one to turn sharply as Mendis is beaten trying to defend but there is no inside edge as short leg takes the catch.
