The umpires call for stumps after checking on the light meter as Sri Lanka finish Day 4 on 31 for three in 16 overs, still needing another 379 runs for victory on the fifth and final day.

Dhananjaya de Silva is unbeaten on 13 with Angelo Mathews at the other end.

Jadeja bowled a good spell and was rewarded for his persistence with two wickets in the final over of the day. Shami was too to handle for opener Sadeera as he ended up gloving a bouncer to the gully fielder.

Earlier, India declared their second innings on 246 for five, setting Sri Lanka 410 for victory.

Shikhar Dhawan (67) and Virat Kohli (50) and Rohit Sharma (50 not out) hit half-centuries before they declared in the post-tea session.

Sri Lanka were bowled out for 373 in their first innings in the morning session with Ishant taking the final wicket, that of Dinesh Chandimal, who perished for a career-best 164.

De Silva content to take risks with not much time left for stumps as he slog sweeps Ashwin over midwicket for a six.

Jadeja strikes with the wicket of Karunaratne, who is caught behind for 13.

The ball goes straight through as Karunaratne plays for the turn but gets a fine outside edge, which is taken by wicketkeeper Saha.

Interestingly, Suranga Lakmal is sent in as the nightwatchman to bat out the last few minutes in difficult circumstances.

But Lakmal doesn't last long as he is bowled by Jadeja off the third ball he faces. The right-hander ends up playing one back on to his stumps to be bowled for a three-ball duck.

Spin introduced as off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin comes into the attack in place of Ishant and he comes ahead of Jadeja.

A watchful Karunaratne defends Ashwin carefully to play out a maiden over.

Shami is about to continue bowling but in a last minute change he is taken off as Jadeja comes on from the other end, with the light fading considerably.

De Silva flicks the fifth ball on the leg side for two runs before Karunaratne plays out another maiden over from Ashwin.

De Silva tries to heave Jadeja over the leg side but gets an inside edge. He then tries to defend and is given out leg before wicket. He takes the DRS and there is a clear inside edge which saves him.

De Silva again comes down and smashes one straight which is stopped by Jadeja on his follow through as he ends up taking a painful blow on his hand.

Sri Lanka are 16 for one in 10 overs. needing another 394 runs for victory.

De Silva playing a few rash shots as he tries to chance his arm against the two spinners and the Indians are happy to see him take a few risks.

Sri Lanka are somehow surviving as they reach 20 for one in 12 overs.

The light has faded considerably and it won't be long before the umpires bring out the light meters.

Sadeera plays back to Ishant but is beaten by the pace and hit on the pads but the impact is too high.

He punches the last ball past mid-off for a couple of runs as Jadeja does well.

Shami bowls a good testing over to Karunaratne, who does well to play it out.

Samarawickrama looking to be positive as he pulls a short ball from Ishant on the leg side for one before Karunarante flicks the next through midwicket for two runs.

Ashwin is slow to get down at midwicket and gifts Sadeera Samarawickrama a single before Karunaratne takes a risky single off the next on the off-side.

Shami bowls a quick bouncer to Sadeera and nearly takes his head off as the right-hander does well to sway out of the way.

The next ball is again on the body and Sadeera again tries to avoid as the ball goes off his arm and is caught in the slips.

The umpire rules it out but Sri Lanka take the DRS review and the Ultra Edge shows that the ball had kissed the gloves on the way to Rahane at gully.

Top class fast bowling from Shami. He softened Sadeera with a quick bouncer, who merely attempted to fend the next ball in his attempt to save himself.

It seems Shami is also struggling as he is also seen throwing up on the field but he is fit to continue.

Ishant Sharma to open the bowling for India with Dimuth Karunaratne, who fell first ball in the first innings, taking strike. He gets a good ball first up as Karunaratne has a loose poke and is beaten.

Ishant switches to round the wicket as Karunaratne is forced to play and he gets the edge but it goes on the bounce to second slip.

The left-hander gets off the mark with a single from the last ball as he clips a full delivery on the leg side.

Shami gets Karunaratne to edge one but it goes low in the gap between the wicketkeeper and the first slip for a boundary.

Karunaratne gets off strike with a single on the off-side before Sadeera Samarawickrama punches one straight back as the bowler half stops it and he keeps strike with one from the last ball.

As soon as Rohit get his second half-century of the match, India declare their innings on 246 for five, setting Sri Lanka an impossible 410 for victory with three and half sessions left in the match.

We still have around 29 overs left in Day 4 but that looks unlikely with the light fading fast.

India scored at 4.7 runs per over as Dhawan (67), Kohli (50) and Rohit (50) hitting brisk fifties, while Pujara fell for 49.

Sri Lanka batted for 135.3 overs in their first innings with Dinesh Chandimal (164) and Angelo Mathews (111) hitting centuries and they will need another similar effort in their second innings to save the match.

Jadeja turns Sandakan on the leg side for a single to take the lead to the 400-run mark.

The left-hander is only looking for singles to bring Rohit back on strike as he gently taps it to long-on for one.

Six singles from the over as Rohit takes his score to 46.

Rohit swings Gamage on the leg side for two runs before he drives the next ball on the up for two more runs to bring up his fifty, from 49 balls.

Gamage comes back into the attack in place of Lakmal. He finally strikes with the key wicket of Kohli, who has a wild swing but ends up getting caught at long-on.

Kohli walks back after scoring 50 but India still don't declare despite having a sizeable lead of 397 runs.

Kohli was deceived in pace by the slower ball from Gamage as he ended up miscuing it to the fielder in the deep.

Ravindra Jadeja gets a promotion to No. 7 and he gets off the mark with a single from the last ball.

Rohit pulls Lakmal uppishly on the leg side as Sadeera Samawickrama dives full length to his right and almost pulls off a blinder. He gets one hand to it and is unable to hold on but ends up saving the boundary.

The 12th man Vijay Shankar has run out with a message for captain Virat Kohli. He then goes and speaks to coach Ravi Shastri in the dressing room, who discusses with batting coach Sanjay Bangar and vice-captain Ajinkay Rahane. Shankar is sent back out again with another message on possibly how many overs India would like to bat.

Sri Lanka looking to cut down the boundary as Kohli and Rohit pick the singles and twos to keep the runs coming.

Rohit has a close shave as he taps it to the covers and sets off for a run but is sent back, who slips but manages to make his crease.

Another message passed on as Kohli and Rohit continue to bat.

Kohli finds the gap to perfection as he crashes a wide delivery from Lakmal through the point region for a four to inch closer to another fifty.

He smashes the next ball down the ground but gets just a single before Rohit pulls a short ball for another four.

Kohli, who made 243 runs in the first innings, take his tally to 290 runs in the match -- the most by an Indian captain in a Test match.

Three singles off Sandakan's next over helps Kohli bring up yet another half-century, from 55 balls.

40 overs remaining in the day, that is light permitting so it remains to be seen how many overs India bat in this session.

Sandakan starts off with the ball as Kohli picks a single and Rohit also does the same to bring up the 50-run stand from as many balls, for the fifth wicket.

Kohli turns the fourth ball on the leg side for one to get three runs from the over.

Pacer Lakmal from the other end. Four singles from the first four balls before Kohli comes down and crashes one through the covers for a four followed by a single to get nine from the over.

India have progressed in the last hour to take their score to 192 for four at tea on Day 4, stretching their overall lead to 355 runs.

Rohit batted positively to stroke a quickfire 28 not out from 22 balls, while Kohli was unbeaten on 25.

Earlier, Shikhar Dhawan cut loose after a slow start to hammer 67, while Cheteshwar Pujara fell for 49.

Murali Vijay fell cheaply for nine, while Ajinkya Rahane failed yet again in the series as he was dismissed for 10.

With a handy lead of 355 runs and with just four sessions left in the match, it remains to be seen how long India bat after the tea break.

Three singles before Rohit pulls Gamage behind square on the leg side for a four and keeps strike with one from the last ball.

Rohit is looking to take charge. He sweeps a full delivery down the leg side fine for a boundary to race to 25 from 21 balls.

Rohit steers the third ball to thirdman for three runs before Kohli is nearly done in by one which keeps low but he is able to keep it out.

He takes two runs off the next ball and keeps strike with one from the last ball.

Perera to bowl the final over of the session and he does well to concede just a single.

Pacer Gamage comes back into the attack. Rohit Sharma tries to pull the first ball but gets a top edge which flies over the slips for a four. He takes a single before Kohli wristly flicks through the midwicket region for the second boundary of the over followed by a single to get 10 from the over.

Three singles from Sandakan's third over as Kohli and Rohit look to keep the scoreboard ticking along.

In the next over, Rohit plays a beautiful drive through the covers for a four coupled four singles and a no-ball to get nine from the over.

India have scored 71 runs from the last 10 overs to take their score to 173 for four in 40 overs, stretching their lead to 336 runs.

Kohli has been busy from the start, to score 19 from 21 balls, while Rohit has made 15 from 16 balls.

Dhawan on the attack as he gives de Silva the charge and hammers the off-spinner through the covers for a four.

He plants his front foot across and sweeps the second ball fine on the leg side for another boundary and then takes a single to long-off.

Three more singles as de Silva goes for 12 runs in his fifth over, giving away 31 runs in his five overs.

Sandakan makes the breakthrough with the wicket of Dhawan. The left-hander comes down the track and attempts another big hit but is beaten in the flight and wicketkeeper Dickwella completes an easy stumping.

A good knock from Dhawan, hitting 67 from 91 balls, after he started slowly but changed gears quite effectively in the last 15-20 minutes.

Following Pujara's dismissal, Dhawan seems to have taken the onus on himself to keep the runs coming.

Dhawan comes down the track and drives Lakmal through the covers for a couple and then two balls later hammers one through the same region for a boundary.

The left-hander then goes for the cut shot but is beaten and then clips the pacer through midwicket for another couple.

Dhawan has cut loose as he hammers a short wide delivery past point for another boundary to get 12 runs from the over.

Captain Virat Kohli gets off the mark with a single off de Silva on the off-side followed by three more singles in the over.

Finally, left-arm chinaman spinner Lakshan Sandakan is called into the attack, to bowl the 34th over.

Dhawan clips the second ball on the leg side for a single to bring up his fifty from 83 balls.

A single to Kohli before Dhawan smashes Sandakan back over his head for a straight six to complete 2000 Test runs in grand style and keeps strike with one from the last ball.

Pujara chips down the track and flicks de Silva through the leg side for two runs. He glances the fourth ball fine and calls his partner for two runs to take his score to 49.

However, he falls one short of his half-century as he is caught in the slips off the last ball of the over.

Pujara tries to steer it to thirdman but ends up hitting it straight to Mathews at slip, who does well to take a low catch to his right.

Gamage oversteps again as Dhawan suddenly decides to come down the track but drives it gently through the covers for just a single.

Pujara keeps strike with a single from the last ball.

Part-time off-spinner Dhanajaya de Silva comes into the attack in place of Perera, who conceded 42 runs in eight overs. He comes into the attack ahead of left-arm chinaman spinner Lakshan Sandakan, who picked up four wickets in the first innings.

Pujara again comes down the track and slaps de Silva through the covers for a four. That also raises the 50-run stand for the third wicket with Pujara have contributed 36 of those, from just 39 balls.

Pujara flicks the next ball on the leg side for one before Dhawan calmly collects another single.

Change of ends for Pujara. Dhawan takes another single before Pujara is hit on the pads as he tries to defend.

Sri Lanka appeal for LBW which is turned down before they take the DRS. But the review goes against them as the ball tracker shows that it is not turning back enough to go and hit the stumps.

Lakmal comes back into the attack as de Silva is taken off after just one over which helped Perera change ends.

Dhawan chips down the track but can't find the gap before he looks to play the pull but fails as the ball falls short of the keeper, who ends up giving away a bye.

Two singles off Perera before Dhawan steers a wide ball past point for a four followed by two more singles as India look to lift the tempo.

Changes continue as de Silva now replaces Perera. But he is easily dealt by the two batsmen, who easily collect five singles from the over.

India have taken their score to 102 for two after 30 overs with an overall lead of 265 runs.

Pujara has stroked his way to a brisk 45 from 60 balls, while Dhawan has been more patient on 35 from 73 balls, with the partnership growing to 73 from 100 balls.

Off-spinner Perera to start off after the lunch break. Pujara turns the second ball on the leg side for one and Dhawan steers the fourth ball past point for two runs and keeps strike with one from the last ball.

Fast bowler Gamage from the other end. He starts with a short ball with Dhawan pull to square leg for one and Pujara hits the next to the covers but Dimuth Karunaratne dives over it to give away a four.

Two singles from Perera's seventh over as India reach 62 for two in 20 overs.

Gamage bowls a tight over to Pujara, who defends, as he concedes just one run courtesy of a no-ball.

In the next over, Pujara uses his feet and punches a full delivery from Perera down the ground past mid-off for a four. He turns the next ball on the leg side for two runs and glances the last ball fine for two more runs to get nine from the over.

India are 72 for two in 22 overs, to swell the lead to 235 runs.

Pujara has been positive, scoring 31 from 35 balls, while Dhawan has been much more sedate, with 21 from 49 balls.

After bowling out Sri Lanka for 373, India reached 51 for two to swell their lead at lunch on Day 4 of the third Test.

Dhawan batted cautiously to be unbeaten on 15 from 38 balls but Pujara was off the blocks quickly to smash 17 not out from 15 balls.

India lost two wickets in the morning session. Opener Murali Vijay was caught behind off Lakmal for nine.

Rahane, promoted to No. 3, continued his poor run in the series as he was dismissed for 10 after playing a reckless shot against Dilruwan Perera.

India's overall lead is 214 runs and they would look to play positively in the post-lunch session and build their lead before putting Sri Lanka into bat in the final session.

Pujara steers a wide delivery from Lakmal through the off-side for two runs and is beaten off the next outside the off-stump.

Dhawan is taking his time as he comes down the track and drives Perera to long-on for one and Pujara edges the next ball for a single.

Dhawan again chips down as he slaps Perera through the off-side for two runs and takes one.

Pujara also uses his feet as he hits a full delivery straight down past mid-off for a four. The next ball is short and Pujara rocks back and punches it through the covers for another boundary to get 13 runs from the over.

Pujara again goes for his shots as he lofts Lakmal over the off-side for a couple and then gets another one through the off-side for two more runs.

He takes a single from the last ball to end the morning session.

Lakmal comes back after spending some time off. He bowls a good over, beating Dhawan outside the off-stump before the left-hander takes a single from the fifth ball.

Perera comes back as he replaces Gamage. Dhawan comes down but is forced to defend before he takes another single to continue his cautious approach. Rahane picks one off the last ball to take his score to 10, the first time he has got to double digits in this series.

Rahane has looked very shaky as he watchfully plays out an over from Lakmal.

And his painful innings ends in the next over. Infact, Rahane throws his wicket away as he comes down the track and looks to loft Perera down the ground but holes out to the fielder at long-on to perish for 10.

India's aim was to give Rahane some time in the middle ahead of the South Africa tour but he wasted the opportunity with a reckless shot.

Cheteshwar Pujara walks in at No. 4 as he gets off the mark with a single.

With Lakmal going off the field, Sri Lanka are forced to introduce spin early as offie Dilruwan Perera comes into the attack, to bowl the seventh over.

The first ball goes off Dhawan's pads to short leg as Sri Lanka appeal but in vain. He then takes a single before Rahane comes down the track and smashes the off-spinner back over his head for a four to release some pressure.

In the off-spinner's next over, he plays another cracking drive through the covers for a boundary.

A couple of balls later, Rahane goes back to play the pull shot but misses and hit on the pads. The umpire turns it down and Sri Lanka take the DRS.

Rahane survives narrowly as the ball is clipping the outside half of leg stump which means the umpire's decision stays.

A nervous start for Rahane as he survives two reviews, while battling his way nine from 20 balls.

Dhawan is content to bide his time and get his eye in and looks in no hurry at the moment.

Meanwhile, Rahane plays another loose shot, throwing his bat at a wide one and is beaten.

India are 25 for one in 10 overs, with an overall lead of 188 runs.

Lakmal looks to have claimed another wicket as Rahane is hit on the pads by a full incoming delivery and the umpire raises his finger.

Rahane consults his partner Shikhar Dhawan before he decides to take the DRS. And it turns out to be a good review as the ball was coming in a long way and missing the leg stump as Rahane survives.

This could be the turning point for Rahane, who desperately needs some runs after a poor showing in the series so far.

Rahane plays another loose shot off the final delivery of the over as he goes after a wide one but is beaten.

Lakmal is again struggling and is throwing up on the field. The physio comes out to attend the Sri Lankan fast bowler, who also struggled in the first innings.

He is forced to go off the field as substitute Dasun Shanaka comes on to replace him wearing a mask.

India's openers Murali Vijay and Shikhar Dhawan have walked out without any masks as the hosts have been doing for the past four days.

But some of the Sri Lankan players are sporting masks to counter the pollution in Delhi.Suranga Lakmal right on the mark at the start as the first ball is pitched right up to right-hander Murali Vijay and moves away.
 
Vijay leaves the first two balls before he smashes a short ball through the covers for a four to get off the mark.The next ball is fuller as Vijay looks to drive but gets a thick outside edge for another boundary past the gully fielder.

Lahiru Gamage to bowl the second over. Shikhar Dhawan taps the first ball on the off-side for a single to get off the mark.

Vijay looking to be positive as he chases a wide delivery outside the off-stump but is beaten. He keeps strike with a single from the last ball.

Vijay takes his time early on and leaves a lot of deliveries but in this innings he is chasing everything. Maybe India are looking to be positive and score quick runs.

Vijay again flashes at a wide delivery but this time he gets an edge and is caught behind for nine.

A good move from India as they promote the struggling Ajinkya Rahane to No. 3. He gets off the mark with a single on the leg side and Dhawan slaps a wide delivery to deep point for one.

A few Sri Lanka's players have again walked out on the field at the Feroz Shah Kotla stadium in New Delhi wearing anti-pollution masks.

Former captain Angelo Mathews had stated on Monday that conditions were pretty bad on Day 3.

"It was pretty much the same as yesterday, I'd say. Or even a bit worse, I'm not really sure," he had said after the day's play.

Captain Chandimal perished for a career-best 164 as Sri Lanka were bowled out for 373 in their first innings.

India, who had declared their first innings on 536 for seven, got a sizable 163-run lead.

Chandimal had led Sri Lanka's splendid fightback after they were reeling on 75 for three at one eight.

He added 181 runs for the fourth wicket with Angelo Mathews, who made 111.

For India, Ishant and Ashwin picked up three wickets, while Shami and Jadeja bagged two wickets apiece as India used only four bowlers for the 135 overs sent down on Day 4.,

Pace from both ends as Ishant Sharma bowls from the other end. Ishant bowls wide as Chandimal goes for the drive but fails to make connection before he gets a thick edge two balls later for a four.

Sandakan is beaten by a full delivery outside the off-stump as he chases a wide one before he leaves alone the last ball.

India bring the field after the fourth ball to deny Chandimal a single but he flicks a full delivery through midwicket for a four.

The last ball is a bouncer and Chandimal is waiting for it as he ramps it over the slips for another boundary.

Ishant has lastman Sandakan on strike as he is beaten off the first ball and is beaten again two balls later off a full delivery.

Ishant beats the right-hander again before he ducks under a quick bouncer.

Meanwhile, Rohit Sharma at short leg has a few words with Sandakan but it is a friendly banter with both smiling throughout.

The last ball is full as Sandakan is committed into the shot and is beaten but achieves his target of playing out the over.

Welcome to the coverage of Day 4 of the third and final Test between India and Sri Lanka in New Delhi.

India need just one wicket to wrap up the Sri Lankan first innings, who finished the third day on 356 for nine.

Chandimal played a captain's knock and his 10th Test century included 18 fours and one six. Lakshan Sandakan was yet to open his account at the other end with Sri Lanka still 180 runs behind.

Mohammed Shami opens the bowling on the fourth day. Chandimal turns the third ball on the leg side for two runs and then picks to raise his 150 before Sandakan plays out the remaining two deliveries of the over.
