16:39   Smith hits half-century, Australia's lead 298 at stumps

STUMPS - DAY 2

Aus 143-4 (46 ovs) & 260 vs India 105 | Scorecard

Australia are in complete command at stumps on the second day as they reach 143 for four in 46 overs, having stretched their overall lead to 298 runs.

Captain Smith, who was dropped thrice, played a good innings on a difficult wicket to be unbeaten on 59, while Marsh hit a few boundaries to be not out on 21.

Ashwin claimed all three wickets to fall in the Australian second innings but Jadeja bowled a lot of overs without much luck on a turning wicket still offering a lot of assistance to the spinners.

It was a horrible batting display by the Indians as were bundled out for a paltry 105 to concede a huge 155-run lead.

Left-arm spinner Steve O'Keefe was outstanding with the ball, claiming six for 35 as India suffered a sensational collapse in the post-lunch session, losing seven wickets for 11 runs in eight overs.

Rahul top scored with 64, the only Indian batsman to get past 20, but his dismissal after he played a rash shot proved to be the turning point and the trigger point for India's batting collapse.

Australia are sitting pretty at the moment with a lead of nearly 300 runs and it would take some extra-ordinary effort from the Indians to win from here.
16:32

Aus 143-4 (46 ovs) & 260 vs India 105 | Scorecard

Jayant has once again gone for runs, giving away 27 runs in his five overs, while Jadeja has conceded just 25 runs in 15 overs and has been quite unlucky.

A desperate India now bring pace bowlers from both ends as Ishant replaces Jayant and Umesh came in for Jadeja.

Smith and Marsh have shut down shop it looks like with a few minutes to go for stumps.

Jadeja comes back to bowl the final over the day as Marsh easily sees off the over to end a successful day for the Australians.
16:10   Smith's half-century builds Australia's lead

Aus 140-4 (42 ovs) & 260 vs India 105 | Scorecard

Jayant strikes with the wicket of Renshaw, who looks for a big hit down the ground but ends up lofting a simple catch to Ishant at long-off.

Another good knock from the youngster as he walks back for 31 after he had put on 52 runs for the fourth wicket with Smith to swell Australia's lead.

There is an appeal for LBW off the next ball as Smith goes for the sweep but the impact is well outside the off-stump.

Later in the over, there is a loud appeal for LBW against new batsman Mitchell Marsh as the umpire again signals the impact is outside the off-stump.

But the ball tracker shows the ball is turning big and missing the leg stump comfortably which means Marsh survives and India lose one DRS review.

Ishant Sharma comes into the attack for the first time in the second innings, to bowl the 36th over.

Marsh drills a wide half volley through the covers for a four to get off the mark in confident fashion.

In the next over, Jayant has another huge appeal for LBW turned down and the Indians again for DRS, this time against Smith.

Even in normal viewing, it looks to be slipping down the leg side and the replays confirm that the impact is on and around the leg stump with the ball slipping down further.

Again, two poor reviews by the Indians as they did in the first innings.

Marsh slaps a full delivery straight back past Jayant for a cracking boundary down the ground, giving the fielder at long-on no chance.

Just one over for Ishant as he is replaced by Jadeja, who continues to bowl without luck and again goes past the edge a couple of times.

Marsh is looking to be positive as he gives Jayant the charge and smashes him over long-on for a six. The problem with Jayant is that he giving it too much flight, he is a bit slower in the air as compared to someone like Ashwin, who is getting more purchase off the pitch.

With the pitch providing so much assistance, Jayant doesn't need to flight the ball so much, instead bowl it a bit quicker as the ball would do things anyways.

Australia are 140 for four in 42 overs, as the lead closes in on the 300-run mark.

15:40   Smith hits half-century as Australia extend lead

Aus 113-3 (34 ovs) & 260 vs India 105 | Scorecard

A single to Smith off Umesh brings up Australia's 100, in the 32nd over.

Finally, Ashwin gets a break after a long first spell of 16 overs, in which he took all the three Australian wickets to fall so far.

He makes way for off-spinner Jayant Yadav, who was disappointing in the first innings and bowled a lot of poor deliveries.

He is unlucky not to get a wicket in his first over as Renshaw plays the reverse which is going straight to Rahane at first slip but Vijay sticks a hand out and deflects it past Rahane.

Jayant is not happy with Vijay's lazy effort as Rahane was in a good position to catch as India drop another catch.

Smith flicks Umesh through square leg for a four to bring up his fifty from 93 balls to continue his phenomenal record against India.

Australia are 113 for three in 34 overs, to extend their lead to 268 runs.

15:25   Smith, Renshaw take Australia's lead past 250

Aus 99-3 (31 ovs) & 260 vs India 105 | Scorecard

Jadeja beats Smith twice in the over with deliveries that spin sharply past the edge of the bat. Infact, Jadeja appeals off the second ball as the Indians think about taking the DRS but wicketkeeper Saha is not too convinced.

Smith then gets an edge which goes past the slip fielder for a couple as the Australian captain takes a risk while going for the second run.

Matt Renshaw looks desperate to get off the mark as after defending a couple of deliveries, he looks to reverse Ashwin but can't get past point.

Jadeja finally strikes as Renshaw goes for the sweep but misses and is given out leg before wicket. He immediately goes for the review.

There is no bat involved which is confirmed by the Ultra Edge. The ball tracker shows the impact is in line but the ball is bouncing over the stumps which means Renshaw survives.

The tall left-hander finally gets the reverse sweep right as he hits it past the fielder at first slip for a four.

Renshaw gets into a tangle as he looks to sweep but has to change the shot at the last minute as he gets an inside edge for a four fine on the leg side.

He inside edges again two balls later for a single and Smith sweeps the last ball to deep square leg for one.

Finally, the first bowling change for India after a long wait of 27 overs as pacer Umesh Yadav is called into the attack.

Renshaw, who is struggling with a stomach bug, seems to be again in trouble as he looks pretty uncomfortable out in the middle. Yadav bowls a short ball which he looks to fend but is struck on the forearm and the physio comes out to attend.

Smith, on 37, gets a third lifeline as substitute Mukund at short leg puts down an easy chance the ball comes off the inside edge and the pads. The bowler Ashwin and captain Kohli can't believe he has put down such a straight forward chance. He was earlier dropped on 23 and 29 by Vijay and Mukund.

Smith keeps the runs coming as he steers Umesh through the gully region for a four and then takes a single.

The Australia captain goes past 1000 Test runs against India in just seven Tests, at a stunning average of 91.

Renshaw gives Ashwin the charge and flicks him through midwicket for a four and lofts the next ball over mid-on for another boundary.

The left-hander comes down the track again and flicks it to deep square leg for two runs as Ashwin goes for 13 in the over.

Australia are 99 for three in 31 overs, as the lead swells to 254 runs with Smith on 45 and Renshaw on 24.
14:45   Handscomb out for 19, Australia lose 3rd wicket

Aus 61-3 (21 ovs) & 260 vs India 105 | Scorecard

Ashwin starts off after the tea break as Smith drives the first ball down to long-on for one. A few deliveries later, Handscomb comes down the track and lofts Ashwin with the spin over midwicket for a four.

Jadeja continues to beat the bat, going past the edge more times than not. Another quick over sent down by the left-arm spinner as India's over rate continues to hover over 21.

Handscomb is playing some superb shot as he comes down the track and drives Ashwin through the covers for a four.

In the next over, Smith, on 29, gets another lifeline as substitute Abhinav Mukund at mid-on puts down a tough chance despite a valiant full length dive to his right.

And this time Kohli applauds the fielder for his effort unlike on the previous occasion when he seemed visibly angry on Vijay.

Smith and Handscomb looking to score at every opportunity possible. When they are not getting the boundaries, they have kept the runs coming through singles.

Ashwin strikes again, his third wicket of the innings, as Handscomb (19) looks to flick but gets an inside edge and is caught at leg slip off his pads.

14:17   Captain Smith helps Australia swell lead

TEA - DAY 2

Aus 46-2 (16 ovs) & 260 vs India 105 | Scorecard

An eventful session as nine wickets fell for 81 runs in 31.1 overs, including two for Australia.

But the visitors are in total command with a handy lead of 201 runs with eight wickets still in hand.

Smith's positive intent was crucial as Australia managed to keep the runs coming despite the wickets of Marsh and Warner.

Australia will be feeling confident as anything over 200 would be very difficult to chase, batting last on this pitch.

Kohli seems very disappointed as he rushes off the field without waiting for his team mates, who will need to produce an improved showing after the tea break and look to make a match out of it.

Jadeja keeps beating the outside edge of the bat as Handscomb struggles to read him but somehow manages to see off the over.

At tea on Day 2, Australia have reached 46 for two in 16 overs, stretching their lead to 201 runs.

Smith has played a good hand with the bat, scoring 27 runs with the help of five fours, while Handscomb has made eight

Jadeja gets back as he beats him with one that spins away from the right-hander.

Smith not holding as he sweeps Ashwin yet again uppishly through square leg for another four. The Australian captain is looking to get the runs, he is batting on 19 from 27 balls, with four boundaries, as Australia reach 34 for two in 10 overs.

The Indian spinners are rushing through their overs, infact the over rate is 22.1 at the moment.

Smith looks to reverse sweep Ashwin but fails to make proper connection, he is itching to get the boundaries.

Handscomb nudges Jadeja fine on the leg side for a couple and then throws his bat at a wide one but mishits it back to the bowler on the bounce.

Australia are 40 for two in 14 overs, stretching their lead to 195 runs.
13:51   Marsh falls for a duck, Australia lose 2nd wicket

Aus 23-2 (7 ovs) & 260 vs India 105 | Scorecard

Marsh failed to get off the mark from 21 deliveries as Australia are reduced to 23 for two in seven overs.
13:43   Warner dismissed early after India crash for 105

Aus 23-1 (6 ovs) & 260 vs India 105 | Scorecard

Steve Smith shows his intent as he slog sweeps Ashwin over midwicket for a four to get off the mark in style.

He chips down the track again but manages only a single on the leg side before Marsh again sees off the over.

Jadeja beats Smith with the quicker delivery as he looks to play from the backfoot but is unable to make any connection. The next ball is a bit short as Smith goes back and slaps it through the covers for a four.

Marsh somehow manages to see off Ashwin's third over, which is getting plenty of turn and creating a lot of problems for the left-hander.

Smith is beaten twice by Jadeja as the left-armer gets it to grip and turn before the Australian captain jumps down the track and smashes it inside out through the covers for a four.

Australia have reached 23 for one in six overs, stretching their lead to 178 runs.

13:33   Warner out for 10 after India crash for 105

Aus 10-0 (2 ovs) & 260 vs India 105 | Scorecard

As expected, India open the bowling with Ravichandran Ashwin, who strikes in his first over with the wicket of David Warner.

Australia had Shaun Marsh to open the batting in place of Matt Renshaw, who is down with a stomach bug.

Warner was looking to be positive as he reverse swept the second ball from Ashwin through thirdman for a four.

Two balls later, he swept it powerfully through square leg for another boundary before Ashwin got revenge.

Warner was struck on the pads by one which went straight on and the LBW appeal was upheld. Interestingly, Warner decides not to review the decision and walks off straightaway.

Spin from both ends as Ravindra Jadeja comes on from the other end. Shaun Marsh watchfully defends the second over of the innings.
13:21   O'Keefe claims 6-35 to send India crashing for 105

India 105-all out (40.1 ovs) vs Aus 260 | Scorecard

O'Keefe triggered a sensational Indian batting collapse, easily their worst batting showing in the last couple of years.

The left-arm spinner claimed six for 35 in 13.1 overs to send India crashing for 105 as they conceded a huge first-innings lead of 155 runs, which can prove to be decisive on this wicket, offering so much assistance to the spinners.

India were 70 for three in 25 overs at the lunch break, but since then they lost seven wickets for 35 runs in 15.1 overs.

Infact, India were 94 for three at one stage before Rahul's rash shot which resulted in his dismissal changed the script completely as they lost seven wickets for 11 runs in the space of 48 deliveries.

13:17   O'Keefe claims 6-35, India bowled out for 105

India 105-all out (40.1 ovs) vs Aus 260 | Scorecard

Jadeja goes after O'Keefe but fails to make proper connection and is caught at long-on for two.

O'Keefe completes a deserved five-wicket haul as India slip to 101 for nine.

Superb bowling from the left-arm spinner, who claims five for 33 in his 123th over.

India have fallen into their own trap as the Australian spinners make merry on a turning track with the batsmen struggling to get even bat on ball now.

Umesh and Ishant pick a single each as India look to scramble whatever runs they can manage and reduce the deficit.

Australia's lead is over 150 runs now and that could prove to be a match-clinching one.

Interestingly, good captaincy from Smith as change of ends worked wonders for O'Keefe, who since the change has claimed five for five in four overs.

And he finishes off the Indian innings with the wicket of Umesh, who comes down and has a big swing but gets an edge and is caught at first slip by Smith for four.

13:06   O'Keefe claims 4th wicket, India 8 down

India 99-8 (37 ovs) vs Aus 260 | Scorecard

The Australian spin twins -- O'Keefe and Lyon -- are all over the Indian lower order. The pitch also seems to be playing tricks with Lyon getting a fair amount of turn and bounce as Yadav does well to keep his gloves away from it.

Superb glove work from wicketkeeper Wade as he stumps Jayant Yadav, who was dragged out of his crease by a flighted delivery from O'Keefe, which turned enough to beat the bat.

India have lost five wickets for four runs in the space of 26 deliveries to be reduced to 98 for eight, with O'Keefe claiming four of them.

And India seems to have lost another one as Jadeja looks to sweep but is beaten by the bounce and is hit on the gloves and caught at leg slip.

Umpire Nigel Llong rules it out but Jadeja reviews it immediately and it goes in his favour with the ball coming off the arm guard.

India 95-6 (33 ovs) vs Aus 260 | Scorecard

Rahul takes a single off Lyon, who has switched to around the wicket, to complete the 50-run stand for the fourth wicket with Rahane, who has contributed just 13.

Lyon gets one to bounce much more than expected as Rahane gets the glove but the fielder at leg slip fails to take a sharp chance.

O'Keefe comes back from the other end in place of Starc. And he strikes with the key wicket of Rahul, who comes down the track and looks for a big hit down the ground but holes out to the fielder at long-off.

The catch is gleefully accepted Warner as Rahul again slumps in pain, holding his shoulder.

Two balls later, he gets another thick edge which goes through the gully region for another boundary.

Off-spinner Lyon comes back into the attack after two lackluster overs from O'Keefe after the lunch interval.

Rahane gets an inside edge off the last ball but it doesn't carry to the fielder at short leg.

Starc continues with his tactics of drawing the batsmen forward but Rahul is feeling a lot more confident to go after those as he flays a full delivery through the covers for a four. Two balls later he gently defends it on the off-side for a single before Rahane also throws his bat at a wide one but he is beaten.

LUNCH - DAY 2

India 70-3 (25 ovs) vs Aus 260 | Scorecard

Starc, who hit a quickfire 61 with the bat, caused the damage with the ball with the wickets of Pujara and Kohli in a single over for six and duck respectively.

Murali Vijay was caught behind off Hazelwood for 10 as the pacers caused maximum damage with the ball for Australia.

Earlier, Australia were bowled out for 260 with Starc dismissed in the first over of the day, caught at deep midwicket off Ashwin.

With five specialists batsmen in their team, India would hope Rahul and Rahane can stitch a big partnership and guide the team out of trouble.
11:31

India 70-3 (25 ovs) vs Aus 260 | Scorecard

Hazlewood comes into the attack after another short burst from Starc, who rocked with the two big wickets of Pujara and Kohli in his three-over second spell.

The first ball from Hazlewood is overpitched as Rahul plays another good drive past mid-off for a four before he picks a single.

Left-arm spinner O'Keefe comes back into the attack as Lyon is given a break after a good first spell. Three singles from the over as he bowls on both sides of the wicket, trying too many things.

Rahul looks keen to keep the runs coming as he plays another cracking cover drive off Starc for a four and turns the last ball on the leg side for two runs.

India 44-3 (15 ovs) vs Aus 260 | Scorecard

New batsman Cheteshwar Pujara survives a huge shout for leg before wicket against O'Keefe. He is lucky that he gets an inside edge which is why the decision went in his favour else he was in trouble.

Hazlewood bowling a terrific spell as Rahul is beaten all ends up by the incoming delivery before he is beaten by one which leaves him.

Rahul comes down the track and lofts O'Keefe straight back over his head for a big six but immediately pulls up with some pain. He seems to have hurt his shoulder as physio Patrick Farhat rushes out to the middle to attend him and he seems okay to resume his batting after a couple of minutes.

Hazlewood overpitches as Pujara flicks it square on the leg side for his first boundary.

O'Keefe is taken off after bowling five overs in his first spell as off-spinner Nathan Lyon comes into the attack.

Rahul plays another beautiful drive through the covers for his fourth boundary and then defends the rest of the over.

Pujara is happy to bide his time as he plays out a maiden over from Hazlewood, who is bowling a good spell.

Not much turn for the two Australian spinners as compared to how much assistance Ashwin and Jadeja were getting on Day 1.

Rahul and Pujara easily see off Lyon's second over, picking up two singles.

Starc comes back for his second spell and he strikes with the key wicket of Pujara. He gets one to bounce more than expected as Pujara is caught off guard and gets a glove to be caught behind by wicketkeeper Wade.

And two balls later, Starc makes it worse with the big wicket of Virat Kohli, who is caught behind for a two-ball duck. A poor shot from the India captain, who chased a wide one and got the edge which was taken by his opposite number Smith at first slip.

This is the first duck for Kohli in nearly 30 months, with the last one coming way back in August 2014 in Manchester.

India in deep trouble at 44 for three, in the 15th over.

Vijay doing it sensibly, looking to take singles with the field well spread out as he takes another one run off O'Keefe.

The left-arm spinner drifts down the leg side as Rahul nudges it fine for his second four.

Starc also looks to tempt Vijay with wide deliveries but he is happy to let them pass. The pacer then tries an incoming yorker which Vijay does well to punch through midwicket for a four and keeps strike with a single from the last ball.

India's openers doing well to rotate the strike as they pick four singles off O'Keefe in the sixth over.

This is a good start for India as they reach 25 for no loss in six overs, scoring at more four runs per over.
