NZ 223-all out (44.3 ovs) vs England 310 | Scorecard


Plunkett finishes off New Zealand's disappointing showing with the bat with two wickets in three balls.

He dismisses Milne (10) and Tim Southee (2) in his his final over to finish with 4-55 as England win by 87 runs to storm into the semi-finals after winning their second successive game.

Except for Williamson, who stroked 87 from 98 balls, none of the other New Zealand were able to come to grips with a difficult wicket.

Along with Plunkett, Jake Ball (2-31) and Rashid (2-47) made important contributions with the ball, while Woods and Stokes claimed a wicket each.

England are the first team through to the semi-finals of the ICC Champions Trophy.

Corey Anderson is New Zealand's last big hope but this task looks beyond him at this stage, with 117 needed from 12 overs on a pitch where getting boundaries has been difficult, especially in the second innings.

Stokes and Rashid concede two runs each in the next two overs as NZ struggle to 198 for six in 40 over,s needing 113 from 10 overs for victory.

Anderson drives the first ball of Stokes's new over through the covers for a four but the pacer makes a good comeback with three dot balls in a row followed by two singles.

Mitchell Santner gives Rashid the charge who bowls one wide down the leg side to get him stumped by wicketkeeper Buttler for three.

Rashid could have picked up another one but drops a low catch off Adam Milne to his left.

However, the leg-spinner finishes with good figures of two for 47 in 10 overs.

The wickets keep tumbling for New Zealand. Plunkett, who replaces Stokes, strikes with the wicket of Anderson, who pulls it straight to deep square leg after scoring 10.

Milne inside edges the last ball for a boundary as NZ are reduced to 215 for eight in 43 overs.

Neesham attempts the reverse sweeps off Rashid but fails to make connection. The umpire turns down the LBW appeal as England decide to take the DRS. The ball tracker shows that the ball has pitched outside the leg stump and the on-field umpire's decision stands.

In the next over, Neesham crashes Plunkett down the ground for a six before the fast bowlers gets revenge off the very next delivery.

Neesham swings it on the leg side but only manages to hole out to the fielder in the deep to be dismissed for 18.

In the next over, Rashid dismisses Neil Broom leg before wicket after he struggled for 11 from 31 balls. He went for the sweep but missed it and was struck in front. He decided to take the DRS but the decision stood with the ball clipping the outside half of off-stump.

The Kiwi hopes suffer another blow as Ball strikes with the wicket of Taylor, who is caught at midwicket after a sedate innings of 39 form 59 balls.

The asking rate is closing in on the nine-run mark as new batsman Jimmy Neesham shows his intent early on. He swings a full delivery from Plunkett over mid-on for a four.

But NZ have a lot to do in the last part of their innings. They are currently on 178 for four in 35 overs, needing 133 runs from 15 overs for victory.

Woods makes the breakthrough with the crucial wicket of Williamson, who is caught behind after a superb innings of 87, hitting eight fours in 98 balls.

The ball kicked off length quite steeply catching Williamson off-guard who gets a glove and is caught behind by wicketkeeper Buttler.

The pitch is playing some tricks as it dries out and NZ's task gets a bit more difficult with the wicket of their captain.

New Zealand are reduced to 158 for three in 31 overs and the onus now lies on Taylor to take them through. He has batted well so far, playing second fiddle to Williamson, to score 33 from 50 balls.

New Zealand ensuring they get a boundary atleast in every Rashid over. This time Taylor gives him the charge as he flicks him off his pads over midwicket for a four.

Rashi has struggled to make an impression, giving away 31 runs in five overs.

Stokes, who has also gone for runs, giving away 38 runs in six overs, is replaced by Woods with England desperate to make the breakthrough.

But no stopping Williamson, who shows his class as he lofts a full delivery from Woods over mid-on for a four. He then tries to chop it over the off-side but mishits it on the bounce to sweeper cover for one.

Ball also comes back as he gives away just three with NZ reaching 156 for two in 30 overs, needing another 155 from 20 overs for victory.

Williamson swings Stokes on the leg side over midwicket for a four before Taylor cuts a short ball past point for another boundary as NZ take charge of proceedings by getting boundaries regularly and looking to seize the momentum.

Williamson gives Rashid the charge and flicks him along the ground through midwicket for a four. Two balls later he swings him on the leg side but gets it off the inside half of the bat for a single and Taylor picks one.

Williamson comes down the track and lofts Rashid over mid-on but the ball stops after it bounces for just two runs with 20 coming from the last two overs.

England are struggling to contain the flow of runs as Williamson continues to attack. He flicks Stokes over the leg side field for a four and two balls later lofts it over the covers for the same result to take his score into the 70s.

New Zealand have made a good recovery to reach 134 for two in 25 overs at the halfway stage, with another 177 runs needed from 25 overs for victory.

Williamson has stroked his way to 73 from 82 balls, with good support from Taylor, who has made 23 from 34 balls.

Stokes comes in from the other end, replacing Plunkett, who bowled a testing first spell of five overs for 26 runs.

Williamson takes a single from the second ball to bring up his fifty from 66 balls.

He has batted quite sensibly and shown great purpose to rally his team after an early wicket.

NZ looking to be positive against Rashid with runs difficult to come against the pacers on a windy day in Cardiff.

Taylor gives Rashid the charge and lofts him over mid-on for his first boundary, from the 27th ball he faces.

That four also takes New Zealand past the 100-run mark, in the 22nd over.

Williamson is struck on the side of the helmet by a quick bouncer from Plunkett as he takes his eyes off the ball at the last minute and looks to duck but has misjudged it.

The physio comes out to attend him and check for signs for any concussion before he rules him fit enough to continue batting.

New Zealand are 64 for two in 15 overs, needing another 247 runs from 35 overs for victory in conditions which have got a bit difficult for batting due to the light drizzle and the wind which has picked quite a bit.

Good bowling by Stokes and Plunkett in tandem before England finally introduce spin as leggie Adil Rashid comes into the attack, to bowl the 18th over.

Williamson and Ross Taylor immediately look to milk the spinner, easily picking up five runs from his first over. Williamson having a few problems against the short deliveries, this time he tries to duck but leaves bat hanging as the ball strikes the back of the bat and goes for a four. He manages two runs each off the last two balls of the over to get 10 from the over.

Rashid goes for five in his second as NZ reach 93 for two in 20 overs, needing 218 from 30 overs for victory at an asking rate of more than seven.

Liam Plunkett comes into the attack, replacing Ball, who bowled a good first spell of one for 20 in five overs.

His first over is tidy as NZ get four runs from it with Guptill benefitting from an overthrow which gets him the second.

Another bowling change as Ben Stokes replaces Wood and he keeps up the pressure with three singles from his first over.

Williamson turns Plunkett for two runs three deliveries in succession before Guptill looks to pull the bouncer but misses and is struck on the shoulder for four byes as 11 come from the over.

Guptill looks to break free as he slams Stokes for a four down the ground before the pacer gets revenge to dismiss the opener for 27. He gets a thick outside edge as he flashes at a wide delivery which moves away and Root does well to take the catch at the wide slip.

New Zealand finally get their first boundary, in the seventh over, off the 33rd ball of the innings as Guptill drives a full delivery from Ball down the ground past mid-on for a four.

He slashes the fifth ball through the covers for another four before Ball beats him all ends up with the outswinger, nearly producing the delivery which accounted for Ronchi's wicket.

That has broken the shackles for the Kiwis as Williamson flicks Woods over midwicket for his first boundary and then takes two runs off the last ball through the off-side.

After a good start, Ball has started to leak runs. Guptill and Williamson hit the pacer for a boundary each to get nine from the over.

Ball has conceded four boundaries in his last two overs, after starting off with two maiden overs in succession.

Wood concedes just a single in the next over as New Zealand reach 40 for one in 10 overs, with Guptill on 19 from 22 balls and Williamson on 18 from 37 balls.

Martin Guptill and Kane Williamson get off the marks with a single each in the second over, bowled by Mark Wood.

Ball follows up a brilliant first over with another maiden over, his second on the trot, as Williamson manages only a leg bye.

Williamson plays a nice drive through the covers off Wood but gets only three runs as England manage to build the pressure in the early overs.

Another leg bye off Ball before Williamson finally gets a run off the bat off the pacer's bowling on the final delivery of his third over.

New Zealand are struggling to get going after the early wicket as they reach 12 for one in six overs.

The game finally gets underway after a brief rain delay.

Pacer Jake Ball strikes in the very first over with the wicket of the dangerous Luke Ronchi, who hit a half-century in the previous game.

Ball bowls a perfect inswinger which breaks through Ronchi's defences to bowl him for a first-ball duck. A dream start for England with the ball.

Captain Kane Williamson defends the rest of the over as Ball starts with a wicket maiden with New Zealand managing just a leg bye.

The start of New Zealand's innings has been delayed because of rain. There is a slight drizzle at Sophia Gardens in Cardiff forcing the covers to come out and currently things are not looking good.

19:00   Buttler props England past the 300 mark

Southee continues. 

Buttler takes a single off the first ball. 

And that is a first ball duck for Wood who came in place of Plunkett. 

He is caught at cover.

Short ball, Ball fends it but a good diving catch by Boult sees the end of England's innings. 

England are bowled out for 310 in 49.3 overs.

Now Plunkett gets into the act and gets a maximum to get England past the 300 mark.

Milne follows that up with a wide but the batsmen run two. 

Buttler gets two runs again. 

Buttler tonks another shot ball to mid-wicket and runs another 2. 

That is another 2 by Buttler. Good batting here by England.

Buttler then scampers for a single. 

Plunkett is out now gone, he tries to go for the big one but he miscues it and is caught by Southee.

After Adil Rashid's dismissal in the 44th over (lbw, Santner) it has been Buttler who has played remarkably. 

He gets to his 50 with a massive six off Milne.

Spinner Santner comes into the attack.

Buttler plays the ball to cover and gets two for it.

Santner bowls a wide. 

Guptill misfields at cover and Buttler gets one run.

Can England up the ante with ten overs to go?

It's Powerplay 3 and Anderson starts with a wide.

Anderson bowls short and Moeen punishes it. He hammers the ball for a six over square leg. He then hits it over extra cover for a couple.

Boult takes a blinder at backward square leg. Anderson bowls on leg side, Moeen tries to get it past the fielder but cannot go past Boult.

Rashid comes to the crease and Anderson bowls on leg side, the ball races down to fine leg for a four.

Rashid then gets two runs down to square leg.

Boult continues. 

Buttler gets a quick single to mid-off.

Another short ball and Moeen pulls it down to backward of square for a single. 

Buttler then gets a single down to third man.

Moeen then pulls another short delivery to the man at deep square leg. 


Anderson continues and he gives 5 runs in his first four deliveries.

It's an inside edge that goes one bounce to keeper Ronchi.

Boult back into the attack and Buttler makes his intent clear. He goes across the stumps in an attempt to play the paddle sweep. But gets nothing.

Buttler takes a single down to cover.

Stokes tries to paddle the ball over keeper only to send the ball down the throat of Milne at third man. 

Moeen Ali digs out the yorker and gets off the mark with a single down to backward square leg.

Buttler plays a dot ball and ends the over with a single down to square leg.

Milne continues.

He bowls wide to Stokes, the batsman plays it down to long on.

Milne bowls a bouncer to Buttler. Umpire calls it wide. Has that woken up the batsman in the sleepy weather?

A short ball and Buttler whips the ball to backward square leg for 2.

A slower delivery now and Buttler gets another two down to deep mid-wicket.

Buttler ends the over with a single down to fine leg.

Santner continues. 

Buttler gets a single behind leg square. 

Stokes gets a run to long on to bring up the team's 200.

Santner loops the ball, Buttler goes after it and hits it down to long on.

A misfield and mid-wicket fails to stop a single. Stokes carries on.

Stokes gets a leading edge but the ball sails over third man and he runs a quick two.

A full-pitched ball and Stokes punches it straight down the ground for 4.

He follows that up with a couple of runs, just a flick off his pads.

Anderson back in the attack and is welcomed by a six straight over mid-off.

He then gets a single down to mid-wicket.

Frustration shows as Root (64) goes for the big heave but he drags the ball on to his stumps and that is a wicket for Anderson.

Root's dismissal brings Buttler to the crease.

England now have two big hitters at the crease.

Buttler gets off the mark with a run down to fine leg.

Stokes play a dot ball to end the over. 

Southee continues, and that is a wide down the leg side.

A slower delivery and pulled to backward square leg for a single. 

The rain is beginning to trickle down here.

Stokes hits the ball to backward point where Broom does a good job to stop it, Root runs off but is back in time at the non-strikers' end. 

Stokes plays a short to deep backward point and gets two runs for the effort.

Southee bowls a widish yorker that Stokes digs out but gets one run down to third man. 

Neesham continues and Stokes gets a boundary off the second ball. It's a crisp boundary through the covers.

He then gets a run to deep square leg.

After playing a dot ball, Root then gets a run down to fine leg.

Stokes then plays an uppish shot to third man and runs two to end the over.

Tim Southee brought back into the attack and almost gets the breakthrough.

Root runs down the track, has no control over the pull shot but thankfully for him the ball falls just short of Neesham at mid-wicket.

Neesham comes back into the attack.

Again two dots balls to begin the over and Stokes is ok with that .

This could be out! Root backs up a little too much. Stokes punches the ball down the pitch, Anderson gets a hand to it and the ball knocks the stumps, thank goodness Root made it back to the crease on time.

Stokes now comes down the track and just clobbers the ball behind the bowler for a boundary. 

Two dot balls again to end the over and that is the drinks break.

Anderson continues and flicks the ball to the leg side for a quick couple down to square. 

He repeats the process and it's an identical shot off the next ball. 

Root gets another run to square.

Stokes plays out two dot balls, good defensive shots for nought.

Stokes gets a single down to deep mid-on off the last ball of the over.

Boult continues and plays out two dot balls.

Nicely bowled but Stokes gets to the pitch of the ball and gets a boundary straight down the ground.

Another two dot balls and then Stokes ends the over with a couple down the leg side.

Anderson continues. He bowls it on the pads and Root flicks it behind mid-wicket for a single.

Stokes plays out three dot balls.

Stokes then plunders Anderson for a six over mid-wicket! What a pull!

Stokes hares down the pitch for a single after a misfield at cover.

Santner gets the ball back.

He starts with a dot and then Root gets to his 50! 50 off 52 balls. What a strike rate. No fuss batting this by the England number 3 bat.

Stokes gets off the mark with a single down the ground.

Root plays a paddle sweep and a superb effort on the boundary by Taylor but he makes contact with the boundary while touching the ball. That is a four to Root. 

Root gets a single to end the over.

Anderson continues and Root takes a single off the second ball with a strike down the ground to mid-off.

Morgan gone! 

He chases a wide and edges it to give Anderson a wicket. 

Ben Stokes replaces Morgan at the crease. He faces three dot balls and is yet to get off the mark.

Boult continues, it's his 5th over.

Morgan gets no leverage as three dot balls are bowled.

Next ball is punched down the ground for two. He follows that with a four, a short ball and he pulls it behind square. He ends the over with another two.

Wicket-taker Milne continues. 

After a dot ball, Root going about his job the way he knows best. He whips the ball through his pads for a single down to leg side.

Morgan then places the ball down to third man for a single.

Root digs out a good yorker! 

Another nice inswinger and Root plays a dot. A dot ball to end the over.

Boult brought back into the attack after that breakthrough.

Root gets a single off the second ball.

England captain Eoin Morgan replaces Hales at the crease. 

His second ball and he plays and misses. 

He gets off the mark with a boundary. He comes down the pitch and gets sends the ball over mid-off. Wow! Nice way to get off the mark. 

The over ends with a dot ball.

Milne continues and a short and wide delivery has been dispatched for a four down to third man. 

He gets a single down to point after a fumble by Broom.

Hales completes his fifty with a single down to the leg side.

Root gets a single to fine leg.

Milne makes Hales smell leather. Wow! Superb delivery.

Hales smacks the ball for a flat six over mid-off.

And that is wicket!

A slower ball and that is revenge for Milne as Hales plays on to his stumps. 

He goes after a well-made 56.

Anderson gives Jimmy Neesham the ball.

Root gets the edge and a streaky boundary through slips as the hundred comes up.

Root plays out two dot balls next.

Root plays it past Broom at point to run a single.

Hales plays a dot ball.

Hales tries to go after the ball, gets no contact. That is five runs off the over.

Milne continues.

Hales gets a run with a pull shot over mid-wicket.

Nice bouncer, Root ducks, ball goes safely to the 'keeper.

Good fielding by Broom at point, not allowing Root to get any runs.

This time, Root gets it past the man at point for a single behind Broom.

Another bouncer to end the over that Hales ducks safely under.

Root comes to the party, Root dances down, gets to the pitch of the ball and dispatches it for a maximum over mid-on. 

Santner follows that up with three dot balls.

Root sweeps it fine for a boundary. 

The last ball of  the over, let's see what happens. Nice dot ball but that is ten big runs off the over. 

Milne continues after the drinks break.

It's a dot to begin with. Hales plays a defensive shot down to the leg side.

An identical shot follows.

A nice bouncer here and Hales ducks. That is the fourth dot ball of the over. 

Nice length there, angled into the leg stump and Hales gets the inside edge on to the pad.

Milne bowls the second bouncer and doesn't get away with. No ball called.

Hales pulls the last delivery for a couple of runs down the leg side. That was a nice, quiet over, save the last two deliveries.

England batsmen are unable to push the scoring here and are just happy with taking the singles and twos.

Santner continues and Root sweeps the ball for a single to fine leg.

Hales gets a run to cover.

Root then gets to 2 runs down to point.

Root then drives the ball for a single and Hales gets another single off the last ball of the over.

Anderson continues, some sloppy fielding by captain Williamson at cover allows Hales to pinch a single.

Root then gets a single. 

Hales gets a dot ball and then a wide ball by Anderson adds to the extras column in the scorecard.

A dot ball later, Hales again pulls the ball for a single. 

Root ends the over with a run off his pads down to backward square leg. 

Santner continues and nearly strikes! Hales gets the leading edge and the ball goes flying jusrt 


Root comes dancing down the track and sends the ball over long-on for a six! 

He then gets a single down to cover.

Hales then gets a single to extra cover. A dot ball to end the over and that is nine runs off the over.

Spin is in and Mitchell Santner comes on to bowl.

A dot ball to begin with.

Hales hares down the pitch to complete a quick single and bring Root on strike.

That is a dot ball. The next ball Root gets a single with a drive down the ground.

Hales then cracks the ball square for another run.

Root ends the over with a run down to mid-on.

Four runs come off the over.

Corey Anderson gets the ball and Root comes across and gets a run on the leg side. 

A leading edge and Hales is lucky as it doesn't carry to cover, he runs a quick single.

Hales pulls it down to fine leg and Milne completes a good collection at the boundary for the batsmen to hare down for just 2 runs.

Milne continues, it's a widesh delivery and Root punches it through the covers and pinches a quick run.

Roy pushes the ball to cover and dashes off for a quick single.

Hales also pinches another quick run.

Roy walks across and smashes the ball down the ground for boundary through the off side.

A straighter delivery, Roy walks across the stumps, only for the ball to crash into his leg stump.

Southee then bowls a bouncer which Hales avoids.

The clock ticks 11 and the teams are now observing a minute's silence to mark the tragic events of the Saturday night's terror attack in London.

Southee continues and Hales hits the ball to the off side for no run.

A wide ball and Hales cuts it, hoping it would go to the boundary but well stopped by the fielder at point.

What an over. That is four dot balls to Roy by Boult. Roy is finding it hard to get going. 

He finally gets one run down to third man.

Boult bowls a full toss and spoils his figures in the over. Hales directs the ball down to deep square for three runs.

That is close! Southee gets one flush onto Hales's pade, the umpire is not interested in the appeal.

Trent Boult comes round the wicket in a change of tactic. 

He bowls wide, Hales doesn't time it well but gets a couple of runs square of the wicket.

Pulled away! Hales gets the first six as he pulls away the short ball over mid-wicket.

Boult comes back with a bouncer. Hales ducks.

Another short ball, Hales tries to go after but he misses, good take by Ronchi behind the stumps.

Southee continues and Hales gets the ball on his pads. The batsman works it well to the leg side for a well run three. 

Hales gets an inside edge as the ball angles in.

Wide ball and Roy drives it again, Santner dives and saves a certain boundary at extra cover.

There is a good breeze at the ground and the ball is getting good shape.

Alex Hales is the other opener for England and starts defensively against Boult.

Second ball is bowled wide and it gets due treatment. Hales sends the ball to the boundary through square.

Hales gets lucky, it's bat and pad and the ball is going down leg. A half-hearted appeal by Boult.

Another widesh delivery and Hales gets a single down to extra-cover .

Jason Roy starts off for England.

Southee opens the bowling and first up its bad-pad. 

Southee bowling a good line here, gets some shape and the ball swings a bit. It's a play and a miss by Roy. 

Roy gets a bit defensive this time and hits the ball to short mid-on.

Southee bowls a bit wide, 

Roy gets off the mark with a sweet cover drive, a wide delivery and Roy times that beautifully through the covers for a four.

Roy defends the last ball. So that is  four runs off the opening over.

At the toss, England captain Morgan said he would have liked to have fielded first too. 

England have made one change in the squad, with Adil Rashid coming in for the injured Chris Woakes. 

Woakes has been ruled out of the Champions Trophy with a left side strain and is replaced by fellow paceman Steve Finn.

New Zealand captain Kane Williamson calls correctly at the toss and puts England to bat in their Group A match at Cardiff.

Pacer Trent Boult plays his 50th ODI as New Zealand go in with the same squad that played against Australia in the rained-out match on Friday.
