16:33   Kuldeep shines on debut, Australia bowled out for 300

STUMPS - DAY 1

India 0-0 (1 ov) vs Aus 300 | Scorecard

India will have to face just one over before stumps are taken on Day 1. Josh Hazlewood to bowl the opening over for Australia and facing him is the in-form KL Rahul, who has hit four fifties in this series already.

The first ball is full and on the channel just outside the off-stump as KL Rahul leaves it alone before he defends the next to point.

He defends the next ball too confidently before Hazlewood sends down a beauty, bounce and swing which the right-hander does well to avoid.

The fifth ball is wide as Rahul is happy to see it go through to the wicketkeeper and leaves the last ball too.

So Rahul successfully negotiates the first over from Hazlewood as India end a good first day to take the upperhand at stumps.

Australia were cruising on 144 for one at one stage before Kuldeep Yadav broke through the middle order, claiming four for 68, to restrict Australia to 300 in their first innings.

For the visitors, Smith shone again with a cracking innings of 111, while David Warner and Matthew Wade hit half-centuries.

Aus 300-all out (88.3 ovs) vs India | Scorecard

India take the second new ball as Bhuvneshwar Kumar comes back into the attack. The first ball is a beauty, full and swinging away, as Lyon is beaten as he looks to play away from his body.

Two balls later he plays an uppish drive on the leg side but is caught at square leg for 13 as Australia are bowled out for 300.

Good captaincy from Rahane, as it has been for the last two sessions, except in the morning when he let the game drift with Smith and Warner scoring runs at a quick pace.

But India made a good comeback in the post lunch-session led by debutant chinaman spinner Kuldeep Yadav, who took four for 68 in 23 overs.

Umesh Yadav also produced a good showing with the ball to pick up two for 69, while Ashwin, Jadeja and Bhuvneshwar picked up a wicket each.

Steve Smith continued his magical run with the bat against India, hitting his seventh century against them, before he was dismissed for 111.

Earlier, David Warner got back among the runs with a patient innings of 56 before Australia lost a few quick wickets after the lunch interval.

Wade chipped with a useful knock of 57 to ensure Australia touched the 300-run mark before they were bowled out late in the day.
16:16   Wade dismissed for 57, Australia 9 down

Aus 300-9 (88 ovs) vs India | Scorecard

Change of bowling as Jadeja replaces Ashwin. He has a huge appeal for LBW turned down against Lyon, who looks to flick across the line but is beaten as the ball also looks to be slipping down the leg side.

Lyon top edges the sweep against Kuldeep but Umesh on the boundary lines is done in by the turn on the bounce as it goes for a four. However, he gets the next ball bang off the middle sweeping through square leg for another boundary as Australia inch closer to the 300-run mark.

Jadeja rushes through a super quick over as Wade takes one before Lyon defends the rest of the over.

Kuldeep is taken off as Ashwin comes back into the attack with India still not taking the second new ball. He bowls another quiet over as Wade picks another run off the fifth ball.

Meanwhile, Jadeja finally picks up his first wicket, in his 15th over, as he looks to sweep but misses the ball completely and is bowled. Wade walks back after a good hand of 57 from 125 balls, which has brought Australia closer to the 300-run mark despite a flurry of wickets in the post-lunch session.

Josh Hazlewood edges the last ball of the over past the slips for a couple as Australia bring up their 300.
15:54

Aus 283-8 (83 ovs) vs India | Scorecard

Lyon takes a risk as he sweeps Kuldeep for a couple to deep midwicket before he beats him with the one going the other way as he comes forward to defend. Top stuff from the debutant as except for Smith and Wade, no other Australian batsman has been able to pick him.

Ashwin bowls a poor delivery down the leg side as Wade looks to flick but gets it off the pads for four leg byes.

Lyon is nearly done in by the full delivery as he plays the sweep and manages to somehow make connection for a single on the leg side.

Wade flicks Kuldeep through midwicket for a couple to bring up his fifty from 113 balls.
15:45   O'Keefe run out for 8, Australia lose 8th wicket

Aus 271-8 (80 ovs) vs India | Scorecard

Substitute fielder Shreyas Iyer makes his presence felt as his quick work on the field earns India a run out courtesy of a direct hit. Wade tapped it on the leg side and set off for a quick single but Iyer at square leg swopped in quickly and scored a direct hit with one stump to aim at.

There is some doubt over whether Saha's gloves dislodged the bails but eventually the decision goes in the batsman's favour.

O'Keefe walks back for eight as Australia lose their eighth wicket.

Australia are 271 for eight in 80 overs as they don't take the second new ball right away with Kuldeep continuing to bowl from the other end, after a long discussion with captain Rahane and senior spinner Ashwin.
15:33   Kuldeep picks 4th wicket, Australia 7 down

Aus 269-7 (79 ovs) vs India | Scorecard

Another Yadav from the other end as Umesh is called back into the attack as India go for the kill and look to finish off the tail as soon as possible.

Wade picks a single to take his score to 30 before Umesh beats Steve O'Keefe with a superb delivery which moves away enough to beat the right-hander.

Wade is playing a good hand with the bat, as he turns Kuldeep on the leg side for a couple and keeps strike with a single from the last ball.

In the next over, Wade gets an edge which goes low and through the slips for a four as Karun again lets it go through, he has been poor in the field today.

O'Keefe plays a nice flicks which goes through the legs of the fielder at short leg through square leg for a four.

Wade goes after Kuldeep, smashing one straight back past mid-on for a four to take his score into the 40s.

O'Keefe also growing in confidence as he plays a cracking straight drive for his second four.

Wade and O'Keefe has steadied Australia's innings somewhat as they take the score to 269 for seven in 79 overs at the final drinks break on Day 1.

Wade has done well to hold the innings together, hitting 45 not out from 98 balls, while O'Keefe has made eight.

Aus 245-7 (73 ovs) vs India | Scorecard

Cummins making his intent clear as he smashes Jadeja straight down the ground past mid-off for a four.

In Jadeja's next over, he is beaten by one which turns big. However, he heaves the next two deliveries across the line on the leg side for successive fours to race to 20.

With Cummins on the attack Wade has been content to play it safe from the other end as he sees off another maiden over from Ashwin, who has done well to hold his end up with some disciplined bowling.

With Jadeja going for runs, India bring back Kuldeep in his place. Cummins playing with caution, defending the full deliveries with a straight bat, not trying anything fancy.

Australia get three singles from Ashwin's next over as India look to check the flow of boundaries, especially against Cummins.

Kuldeep strikes again with the wicket of Cummins, who is caught and bowled for 21. The wrong one again does the trick as Cummins is unable to read it as he goes for the big drive but ends up chipping it straight back to the bowler.
14:52   Kuldeep claims 3 wickets to lead India's fightback

Aus 222-6 (65 ovs) vs India | Scorecard

Senior pros Ashwin and Jadeja start off after the tea break. Pat Cummins plays out a maiden over from Ashwin, the first of the post-tea session.

In the next over, Wade sweeps Jadeja for a couple square on the leg side. He paddles the next ball and again gets a couple of runs before he defends the remaining two balls.

Cummins gets off the mark with a bang as he lofts Ashwin over long-on for a huge six.

Wade comes down the track and flicks Jadeja through midwicket for a four. It remains to be seen how long before India bring back Kuldeep, who had Australia's batsmen in all sort of problems with his variety.

14:15   Kuldeep claims 3 wickets, Australia 208-6 at tea

TEA - DAY 1

Aus 208-6 (61 ovs) vs India | Scorecard

A brilliant comeback by India led by the debutant chinaman bowler Kuldeep, who claimed three for 41 in 15 overs in a brilliant exhibition of top class spin bowling.

The other Yadav -- Umesh -- continued his consistent showing with the ball as he picked up two for 54 in 12 overs.

Smith continued his scoring spree against India as he hit a fluent 111 before he was caught at slip off Ashwin.

Overall, Australia lost five wickets in the post lunch session as they were reduced to 208 for six in 61 overs at the tea break.

With the pitch consistently offering the spinners a lot of turn and bounce, India would be looking to bowl out the Aussies as soon as possible in the post-tea session.
14:11

Aus 208-6 (61 ovs) vs India | Scorecard

Quick thinking from Rahane as he brings back his wicket-taking bowler Kuldeep in place of Jadeja as he looks for another wicket before the tea break.

Like some of his team mates before him, Wade fails to read Kuldeep as he plays right back to a full delivery and is lucky that the ball spun away from the stumps as he offered no stroke.

Australia go into lunch at 208 for six in 61 overs, having lost five wickets for 77 runs in 30 overs in the post-lunch session.

14:08   Smith out for 111, Australia lose 6th wicket

Aus 208-6 (60 ovs) vs India | Scorecard

Ashwin and Jadeja have settled into a nice rhythm. Ashwin bowls one short which turns big and stays a bit low as Wade goes for the pull but is beaten. He gets another ball to hit the crack and turn big as Saha fails to collect to give away a bye.

The next ball goes straight as Smith plays for the turn but gets an edge and Rahane does well to take a sharp low catch at slip.

Smith walks back after a superb knock of 111, having hit 14 fours in his 173-ball knock as Australia continue to lose wickets after the lunch interval.
14:03

Aus 207-5 (59 ovs) vs India | Scorecard

Matthew Wade takes on the short ball from Umesh as he pulls it high over the fine leg fielder for a six. India won't mind Australian batsmen taking such risks as it gives them another opportunity to make a breakthrough.

In the next over, Kuldeep bowls another beauty as Wade comes forward to drive but the ball turns big past the edge of the bat.

Ravichandran Ashwin comes back into the attack after a couple of overs from Umesh. Smith and Wade take a single each as two runs come from the over and they do the same in the next over from Kuldeep.

Around 20 minutes to go for lunch as Ashwin looks for another wicket. He gets one to rip and turn as Wade is again beaten outside the off-stump before he sweeps the last ball for a single.

Another change as Kuldeep finally gets a break after a long first spell of three for 41 in 14 overs, bowled on either side of the lunch break.

He makes way for left-arm spinner Jadeja, who concedes three singles as Australia cross the 200-run mark, in the 57th over.

Ashwin nearly does in Wade with the variation, the straighter delivery which holds its line and passes close to the off-stump as the left-hander leaves alone the delivery.

Jadeja drops one short as Smith goes back and cuts it behind point for a four. However, the next ball is pitched up and turns quite a lot as Smith is beaten before he takes a single and Wade picks one too.
13:38   Captain Smith hits third century of the series

Aus 185-5 (51 ovs) vs India | Scorecard

All the five Australian wickets have been picked up the two Yadavs, with Kuldeep claiming three of them and Umesh bagging two.

And no wonder Rahane brings back Umesh from the other end, to replace Bhuvneshwar as India go in for more wickets.

Smith picks another single on the leg side before Matthew Wade plays out a good probing over from Umesh.

In the next over, Smith gives Australia something to smile about for the first time after the lunch break. The Aussie captain glances Kuldeep fine on the leg side for a four to bring up his 20th Test century, from 149 balls. This is his third century of the ongoing and his seventh century in his last eight Test matches against India to continue his golden run against them.
13:30   Debutant Kuldeep claims 3rd wicket, India on top

Aus 178-5 (49 ovs) vs India | Scorecard

This is terrific bowling from the young Kuldeep Yadav. He deceives Glenn Maxwell with the wrong one as he plays for the turn and is bowled for eight.

Australia have collapsed after lunch to be reduced to 178 for five in 49 overs with Kuldeep claiming three wickets.

Earlier in the over, Maxwell had smashed Kuldeep for a boundary straight down the ground over mid-on before the spinner got revenge.

Kuldeep continued to pitch it up and mix it up well, using his variations to good effect. He bowled two chinamans in a row to Maxwell one of which was a four before he bowled the wrong one which went the other way to beat the batsman and crash into the stumps.

13:13   Kuldeep dismisses Handscomb, Australia 4 down

Aus 169-4 (45 ovs) vs India | Scorecard

Bhuvneshwar comes back into the attack, replacing Umesh, who bowled another good spell, having taken two for 47 in 10 overs.

Handscomb steers Bhuvi on the off-side for a single while Smith turns the next ball on the leg side for one.

In the next over, Handscomb comes down the track to Kuldeep and hits a low full toss through midwicket for a four.

This is turning out to be a dream debut for Kuldeep. He bowls a beauty to Handscomb, who is bowled through the gate for eight as Australia continue to slip after lunch.

Good flight from Kuldeep as Handscomb tried to drive it against the spin through the covers but was beaten all ends up as the ball spun back in sharply.

India have done well after the lunch break to claim three wickets and reduce Australia to 169 for four in the 45th over, with both the Yadavs claiming two wickets each.

12:59   Warner and Marsh perish, Australia 3 down

Aus 157-3 (41 ovs) vs India | Scorecard

One wicket leads to another as Umesh gets the wicket of Marsh, who is caught down the leg side for for four. A short ball on the body which Marsh looks to turn fine but gets an edge which is taken by wickeetkeeper Saha as Australia slip to 153 for three, having lost two wickets for 22 runs in the space 40 balls since the lunch interval.

Peter Handscomb is the new batsman and he has also been in the runs in the series.

The two Yadavs have bowled well in tandem, they have not only managed to take wickets to check Australia's progress but also built the pressure with some tight overs.

Australia are 157 for three in 41 overs having lost two wickets for 26 runs in 10 overs after the lunch interval.

Smith has slowed down considerably since lunch but is still on course for another century, having made 88 for 132 balls, while Handscomb is on two.
12:29   Debutant Kuldeep dismisses Warner for 56

Aus 145-2 (35 ovs) vs India | Scorecard

Umesh starts off proceedings after the lunch interval. Australia take no time to getting going as they pick four singles from the first over of the second session.

The two Yadavs bowling in tandem as left-arm chinaman spinner Kuldeep continues from the other end.

Smith takes a single from the second ball before Warner plays out the rest of the over.

Umesh bowls a superb delivery to beat Smith as the ball goes straight on, past the edge of the bat. Smith then shuffles across before he flicks Umesh through midwicket for a four. He goes after a wide delivery as he gets a thick edge which falls short of captain Rahane at gully. The last ball is short and Smith has no problems pulling it through the leg side for the second four of the over as he races into the 80s, and in sight of yet another century against the Indians.

Meanwhile, Kuldeep strikes against the run of play with the wicket of Warner. He gets one to bounce extra as Warner goes for the cut but gets an edge which is well held by Rahane at slip.

Warner walks back after a good knock of 56, adding 134 runs for the second wicket with Smith, as he becomes the first Test victim of the young Kuldeep Yadav.

Kuldeep nearly foxes new batsman Shaun Marsh who plays back to the full delivery but manages to get his bat down in time to the wrong one.

Marsh turns the next ball on the leg side for one before Smith picks a couple of leg byes off the last ball.

11:36   Smith and Warner hits 50s, Australia in control

LUNCH - DAY 1

Aus 131-1 (31 ovs) vs India | Scorecard

It has been a superb session for Australia as they recovered quite well after an early wicket to score 131 for one in 31 overs in the morning session after they had elected to bat.

Smith dominated right from the start as he smashed his way 72 not out from 101 balls, hitting 10 fours, to continue his magical run against the Indians.

He put on an unbroken stand of 121 runs with Warner, who finally got back to form, with an unbeaten 54. He was dropped off the very first ball of the match by Karun Nair in the slips off Bhuvneshwar and he made the Indians pay for that lapse.

Umesh was the only wicket taker for India as he took one for 29 in five overs, while Jadeja did create a few problems for Smith but the rest of the bowlers struggled to make an impression in the morning session.

If India don't pick a few wickets after the lunch break, they would be doing a lot of chasing and staring at a huge Australian score.

11:27   Smith, Warner hits 50s, Australia in control

Aus 125-1 (29 ovs) vs India | Scorecard

This time Warner targets Ashwin as he comes down the track and lofts him straight down the ground for the first six of the match.

A single to Smith in the next over helps raise the 100-run stand for the second wicket between the two batsmen. Jadeja drops the next ball short which Warner smashes through the covers for a four followed by a single as the left-hander gets into the 40s for the first time in the series.

The Indian bowlers have been pretty disappointing. This time Ashwin errs with his length, bowling it as Warner rocks back and blasts it through the covers for a four. The next ball is even shorter but this time he cuts it to deep extra cover for one.

Debutant Kuldeep Yadav is called into the attack with around nine minutes left for lunch. Warner looks to cut the second ball but gets a thick outside edge which flies past the slip fielder for a four. That boundary helps Warner bring up his fifty for the first time in the series, from 72 balls as Australia take control.
11:17   Smith slams fifty to push India on the backfoot

Aus 102-1 (25 ovs) vs India | Scorecard

Smith continues to flick the spinners through the leg side as he hits Jadeja through square leg for a couple. Jadeja then produces another beauty to beat Smith, who tries to defend before he edges the next ball. The ball rolls along the ground through thirdman where Ashwin half-heartedly gives charge and watches the ball go over the ropes for a four. India have looked completely flat on the middle and missed the energy on the field in the absence of their captain Virat Kohli.

Smith goes after Ashwin as he comes down the track and lofts him back over his head for a six. Two balls later, he cuts a short ball past point for the second four of the over to continue Australia's brisk start.

Jadeja is bowling a good spell. This time he gets Warner to edge one as it flies past the slips for a four as Australia go past the 100-run mark, in the 25th over.

Aus 82-1 (20 ovs) vs India | Scorecard

Bhuvneshwar gets a break after a long first spell of eight overs for 37 runs in which he started off well but lost steam as he continued to bowled.

Smith defends the first four balls before he miscues one to mid-on as the ball seems to have bounced a bit more but he still manages to pinch a single.

Smith is cruising towards a half-century with the Indians again looking clueless against him. He flicks Jadeja through midwicket for two runs to move his score to 49 before he is beaten by a beauty from Jadeja, turning enough to beat the edge of the bat.

Ashwin getting some bounce as Warner is beaten and hit on the pads as he looks to defend. The off-spinner then bowls a long hop which Warner pulls but only for a single to fine leg.

Smith flicks the last ball of Ashwin's over through square leg for a single to complete his fifty, from 67 balls.

Australia are looking in control on 82 for one one in 20 overs, scoring at more than four runs per over.
10:46   Smith, Warner rally Australia after early wicket

Aus 74-1 (15 ovs) vs India | Scorecard

Smith has been quick to seize the initiative, hitting boundaries regularly, while Warner also is looking to get back into the groove and register his first major innings of the series.

A tired Bhuvneshwar bowls a short wide delivery which is crashed through the point region for a four by Smith, who takes his score to 29.

Spin introduced as Ravichandran Ashwin comes into the attack, to bolw the 12th over. Warner defends the first four balls before he has a go but fails to make proper connection as the ball goes in the air but falls short of the fielder rushing in from deep extra cover and Smith picks an easy single off the last ball.

A long first spell for Bhuvneshwar as he continues, to bowl his seventh over on the trot. Two singles before Smith takes toll of another wide delivery, hitting it past point for another four.

Ashwin concedes just two singles in his second over before Smith continues his positive approach. Bhuvneshwar bowling his eighth over bowls a short and wide delivery which Smith slaps through the covers for a four. He then steers a wide delivery through point for a couple followed by a single each to the two batsmen.

Australia are scoring at a very quick rate, having made 74 for one in 15 overs at nearly five runs per over.

10:21   Smith, Warner rally Australia after early wicket

Aus 52-1 (10 ovs) vs India | Scorecard

Bhuvneshwar gets one to come in but it slips down the leg side, taking the pads for four leg byes fine down the leg side. He then bowls a quick bouncer which hits Warner's outside edge and goes over the slips for a four.

This has been a superb comeback by Australia after losing an early wicket. Smith has been quite positive right from the start and looking to score off every delivery. He drives a wide delivery from Umesh square on the off-side for a four and then smashes another short wide delivery through the covers for another boundary.

The next ball is again wide as Smith hits it wide of the fielder in the deep at covers for two more runs.

Umesh bowls a bouncer which Smith looks to pull but gets it on the gloves for a single to fine leg.

Australia have raced to 45 for one in eight overs with Smith on 19 from 21 balls and Warner on 21 from as many balls.

Smith is looking on fire at the moment. Umesh bowls it a bit straight as Smith whips it through the midwicket region for a four before he drives the next through point for two runs as Australia go past the 50-run mark, in the 10th over.
10:04

Aus 26-1 (6 ovs) vs India | Scorecard

Warner turns Bhuvneshwar on the leg side for one before the pacer bowls Australia captain Steve Smith a few testing deliveries, which he manages to keep out.

In the next over, Smith gets off the mark with a single to midwicket off Umesh before Warner steers a wide delivery past the point fielder for his third four.

Bhuvneshwar getting some swing as he looks to come closer to the stumps but Smith is able to turn him through midwicket for a couple. Interestingly, the pacer then switches to round the wicket as Smith again flicks it through the same region for two more runs and then nearly inside edges one back to his stumps as he shuffles across and defends.

Umesh gets a bit of swing as Warner gets a leading edge trying to hit it across the line but picks a single on the off-side.

This is a new strategy by the Indians, having their pacers to bowl round the wicket of Smith, who picks two more runs to square leg.
09:44   Umesh strikes early, Renshaw out for 1

Aus 10-1 (2 ovs) vs India | Scorecard

Bhuvneshwar Kumar to open the bowling for India in his comeback game and facing him is David Warner, who will be desperate for runs in this game after a run of poor scores in the series so far.

Bhuvi gets one to swing in as the tall Matt Renshaw defends before clipping the next to midwicket where Ashwin misfields to give away a single. The last ball is wide and this time Warner gets it off the middle as he crashes through the covers for a four.
