IPL updates: Rohit hits half-century to lift Mumbai to victory

Rohit finishes unbeaten on a superb innings of 56 from 37 balls to help Mumbai win by five wickets with one ball to spare.

The Mumbai captain timed the run chase to perfection and never looked in any trouble during his innings.

Even when wickets fell from the other end, Rohit kept his cool and ensured he stayed till the end to take his home. He got good support from Pandya, who hit 14 not out from nine balls.

RCB are out of the tournament as they suffer their eighth defeat in 11 games, while Mumbai have all but confirmed their place in the play-offs with their eighth win, which also sees them jump to the top of the IPL standings.

Aravind to bowl the 19th over. Rohit punches the first ball to the covers for a single and Hardik picks one off the next.

Rohit then shuffles across before sweeping Aravind over the square leg fence for a six which makes the equation very comfortable for Mumbai.

He drives the next ball to the covers where Chahal misfields to give away a run and Hardik takes one off the next.

Rohit takes one off the last ball to bring up his fifty from 34 balls, with Mumbai needing seven from the last over for victory.

RCB are not letting Mumbai run away with the match. Watson gets the wicket of Karn, who pulls a short ball ball straight into the hands of the fielder at deep square leg to perish for nine.

Mumbai still in control of the chase with 33 needed from 21 balls for victory and Rohit looking in good touch at the other end.

Watson has had a good outing with the ball so far, taking one for 19 in three overs.

Choudhary to bowl the 18th over. He starts with a slower ball which Rohit taps on the off-side before Hardik hits the next to deep extra cover for another run and his partner picks one off the next.

Hardik then drives the fourth ball through the covers and comes back for the second before he strangely lets a short ball go through.

Choudhary gifts Mumbai a wide and the extra ball hurts RCB as Hardik pulls the last ball over midwicket for a six.

Mumbai are 145 for five in 18 overs, with another 18 needed from two overs for victory.

Karn finally gets his first boundary as he slams Chahal back over his head for a four. Mumbai would be hoping for a few more boundaries from the left-hander in order to bring the asking rate down. They are 125 for four in 16 overs, with another 38 needed from 24 balls.

Chahal goes for 11 in his final over to finish with one for 36 in four overs.

Krunal Pandya, who has been struggling with some injury which has restricted his running between the wickets, has to rush for a quick single to long-on. That aggravates his injury further and he is forced to retire after scoring just two.

Interestingly, Mumbai have promoted Karn Sharma higher up the order ahead of Hardik Pandya, who has been kept back to finish off the match at the end.

Mumbai get six runs from Negi's final over, who finishes with splendid figures of two for 17 in four overs.

Rohit looks to paddle scoop left-arm pacer Choudhary fine on the leg side but fails to make connection before he cuts a short ball to thirdman for one.

He tries a quick short ball to Karn, who attempts the pull shot but fails to make connection before he drives a yorker to long-on for one.

Choudhary gives Rohit some width who drives it through point for a four. The last ball is hit through the covers in fine style as he gets another boundary.

Mumbai are 114 for four in 15 overs, needing 49 runs fro the last five overs for victory.

Pacer Milne comes back as he bowls a short wide delivery which Rohit slashes past point for his second boundary.

Later in the over, he drifts on the pads as Pollard glances the fifth ball fine for two runs and then gets the last ball finer for a four.

A poor over from Milne under the circumstances as he gives away 12 runs in his second as Mumbai manage to take off some pressure after a few good overs.

Negi continues to keep it tight, with another good over, giving away just four runs. He has given away just 11 runs in his two overs, while picking up two wickets to help keep the Mumbai batsmen in check in the middle overs.

Pollard targets Chahal as he chips down the track and lofts him wide of mid-on for a four. He clips the next ball square on the leg side and comes back for two runs.

But the leg-spinner gets revenge as Pollard hits one straight into the hands of the fielder at deep square leg to perish for 17.

Shane Watson makes a good start with the ball as he gives away just three singles in his first over with RCB looking to build the pressure with some tight overs in the middle.

The pressure tactics pay off as Pawan Negi strikes in the next over with the wicket of Buttler, who is caught in the covers after scoring 33 from 21 balls, as he tries to flay it over the off-side.

In his next over, Negi strikes with the wicket of Rana, who is brilliantly caught by Head on the midwicket fence. He does well to judge the ball just inches inside the ropes before his balance trips over as he lobs the ball back and then comes back inside the boundary to complete the catch.

Rana walks back for 27 as Mumbai are reduced to 74 for three after 10 overs at the halfway stage. They need another 89 runs from 10 overs for victory, with seven wickets in hand.

Choudhary, who claimed a wicket in his first over, comes back. The in-form Buttler plays a nice straight drive as Chahal does well to stop the boundary and keep it down to just two runs but only four runs come from the over.

Sreenath Aravind comes into the attack. Rana punches the second ball straight down the ground past mid-on for a four. Three balls later, Buttler smashes it back over the bowler's head for another four.

In the next over, Buttler launches Chahal over the long-on fence for a six as Mumbai race to 55 for one in six oves, with Buttler on 30 from 17 balls and Rana on 23 from 18 balls.

Left-arm pacer Aniket Choudhary gives RCB a dream start with the wicket of Parthiv Patel with the first ball of the innings. Parthiv looks to pull a short but fails to make proper connection and Yuzvendra Chahal does well to take a low to his right.

Nitish Rana and Jos Buttler get off the mark with singles before the former glances Choudhary's last ball fine on the leg side, for a four.

Leg-spinner Chahal to bowl the second over. Just a single from three balls before Rana plays the sweep which falls just short of the fielder at short fine leg who dives for the catch but fails to stop the ball to give away a four. Two balls later, he plays a nice drive through the covers for another four.

Adam Milne comes into the attack after just one over from Choudhary. Jos Buttler plays a beautiful drive through the covers for his first boundary and then pulls the next on the leg side for another boundary.

Rana get a leading edge which goes high on the leg side as Choudhary makes a good attempt running back from short fine leg but fails to get to the catch.

Buttler plays another good drive through the covers off the last ball for the third four of the over.

Milne goes for 17 as Mumbai race to 32 for one in three overs.

17:44   Negi's late attack lifts RCB to 162


RCB 162-8 (20 ovs) vs Mumbai | Scorecard

A good finish for RCB, who get 40 runs from the last four overs, to finish on a healthy 162 for eight in their 20 overs and give their bowlers something to bowl after their recent failures with the bat.

RCB could have got a few more but for McClenaghan, who bowled a splendid final over, giving away just five runs and picking up two wickets to finish with excellent figures of three for 34 in four overs.

Negi provided the boost in the final few overs as he smashed a quickfire 35 from 23 balls after AB had earlier smashed 43 from 27 balls.

RCB had looked in danger of another batting flop show after they were reduced to 108 for five following Watson's dismissal but the 54-run stand between Negi and Jadhav (28) helped them swell their total at the end.

Negi goes after Malinga, hitting the veteran pacer for a couple for sixes, in the 18th over. He slashes the first ball over the covers for a six and then lofts the fifth ball over long-on for another maximum.

Malinga goes for 15 in his final over to finish with 31 runs from his four overs.

Negi is getting the boundaries for RCB in the final few overs. This time he swings Bumrah over midwicket for his third six in the space of nine deliveries as the Mumbai misses his length after two successive yorkers.

Bumrah gives away 10 in his final over to finish with one for 33 in his four overs.

McClenaghan to bowl the final over. He starts with a slower ball as Jadhav miscues it on the off-side, trying to hit the inside out lofted shot, and gets just a single as it falls short of the fielder at thirdman.

While Jadhav has struggled to get the boundaries in the last few overs, Negi is doing well at the other end.

He smashes McClenaghan straight down the ground through long-off for a four. Negi has another go at the next ball but this time only manages to hit it straight to Pollard at long-on to fall for a good innings of 35 from 23 balls.

Jadhav has a go at the next ball but he also fails to get it off the middle and is caught by Pollard running to his left at long-off to be dismissed for 28 from 22 balls.

McClenagahan on a hat-trick. Adam Milne is beaten by the slower short ball as Sreenath Aravind looks to steal a bye but Parthiv manages to run out the batsman.

The boundaries have dried up for RCB as McClenaghan sends down another good. Jadhav trying his best to break the shackles but the visitors manage only singles for seven runs in the 16th over.

RCB have not hit a boundary for 23 balls with Mumbai taking control of the proceedings.

Jadhav finally breaks the shackles, hitting Bumrah for a four through midwicket for the first boundary for RCB after a long wait of 26 balls.

Bumrah goes for 10 runs in his third over as RCB reach 132 for five in 17 overs.

RCB 115-5 (15 ovs) vs Mumbai | Scorecard

The wickets keeps tumbling for RCB. Shane Watson (3) looks to swing Bumrah on the leg side but misses it completely and is bowled for three.

RCB in danger of crashing out for a below-par score yet again on a good batting wicket as they are reduced to 111 for five in 14 overs.

Meanwhile, Mumbai going for the kill as they bring back Malinga. Pawan Negi is beaten off the first ball before he plays another couple of dot balls and finally manages to get off strike with a tight single to point.

RCB struggling on 115 for five in 15 overs and the onus now lies on Jadhav (15 from 11 balls) to score some runs in the final few overs in the company of the tailenders.

Just when it looked RCB were stringing together a good partnership, Mumbai strike just at the right time with the wicket of Travis Head.

The left-hander slog sweeps Krunal through midwicket for a four and perishes trying to repeat the shot.

He hits the spinner straight into the hands of his younger brother Hardik to fall for 12, after a 45-run stand for the third wicket with AB.

New batsman Kedar Jadhav goes after Karn lofting him straight down the ground for a four.

AB continues his aggressive approach as he slogs Krunal over midwicket for another his third six. However, the spinner gets revenge off the very next delivery as AB top edges the sweep and is caught at short fine leg after an entertaining innings of 43 from 27 balls.

RCB continue to lose wickets at regular intervals to be reduced to 106 for four in 13 overs.

AB de Villiers looks in good form right from the start. Malinga overpitches as AB plays a nice drive through the covers for a four.

In the next over, the South African right-hander steers a wide delivery past point for a four. He slog sweeps the next ball over midwicket for a six to race to 29 from 15 balls, having hit two sixes and three fours.

Karn bowls another quiet over, giving away just four runs as RCB reach 80 for two in 10 overs.

Mandeep tries the slog sweep two balls later but only manages to hole out to deep midwicket to fall for 17.

Mumbai juggling their bowlers around as Jasprit Bumrah comes into the attack, the fifth new bowler in a row. Five overs, five new bowlers!

Kohli chips down the track and lofts Bumrah off his pads over the fence at midwicket for a six. Travis Head gets off the mark with two runs as Rohit Sharma misfields in the covers with RCB reaching 40 for one in five overs.

Kohli gets off the mark with a single from the first ball before Mandeep hits the next ball square on the off-side for a four. Two balls later, he pulls a short ball through midwicket for another boundary and keeps strike with a single from the last ball as nine come from the first over.

Lasith Malinga to bowl the second over. Two singles before Malinga bowls a full toss on the pads as he misses his line and Mandeep easily glances it fine on the leg side for a four.

Welcome to the coverage of the 38th match of the Indian Premier League between Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bangalore in Mumbai on Monday.

RCB captain Virat Kohli has won the toss and elected to bat at the Wankhede stadium.

Mumbai suffer a blow as the in-form Harbhajan Singh is ruled out with injury, with leg-spinner Karn Sharma replacing him in the only change for the hosts.

Meanwhile, RCB have made three changes with Shane Watson, Mandeep Singh and Aniket Choudhary replacing Samuel Badree, Sachin Baby and Stuart Binny.
