16:37   Kolkata Test: Sri Lanka escape with a thrilling draw

SL 75-7 (26.3 ovs); Target to win: 231 | Scorecard

The umpires call the players off the field as the Test finishes in a thrilling draw.

Sri Lanka finish on 75 for seven in 26.3 overs to escape with a tense draw, saved only by the fading light in Kolkata.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar bowled his heart out, claiming four for eight in 11 overs, and Shami bowled a splendid spell to claim two for 34 as the two pacers made life hell for batsmen on a placid fifth day wicket.

And for the first time in India in a Test match, an Indian spinner failed to take a wicket in a Test match. Infact, Ashwin didn't bowl a single over in the second innings while Jadeja got just one over.

Earlier, captain Virat Kohli led a stunning India fightback against Sri Lanka with a superb unbeaten hundred.

Kohli propped up his side's batting with an unbeaten 104 to register his 18th Test hundred, and 50th across formats, after paceman Suranga Lakmal's inspired spell in the first session had lifted Sri Lanka in the morning session.

India, however, rode out the storm before declaring their second innings on 352 for eight immediately after Kohli hit a six to get to three figures, setting Sri Lanka 231 for victory.
16:25   Bhuvneshwar strikes again, SL 7 down

SL 75-7 (26 ovs); Target to win: 231 | Scorecard

The light is fading quite fast at the Eden Gardens and Sri Lanka are somehow surviving and every delivery kept out is proving to be like gold dust.

Shanaka drives Shami down the ground for two runs, the first runs scored after 26 balls. He clips the next delivery through midwicket for a four.

Shami then draws Shanaka forward who is beaten and then blocks the last ball.

Bhuvneshwar continues to bowl as he strikes yet again. Perera is beaten all ends up as Bhuvi sends his stumps scattering to claim the seventh wicket for India.

Three wickets to go for India but not much time with the light continuing to fade.

Rangana Herath keeps out the remaining four deliveries before the umpires check on the light metre and India get another over.

Bhuvneshwar strikes from the other end with the wicket of Dickwella. The ball takes the inside edge as he pokes at one outside the off-stump and wicketkeeper Saha does well to take a low catch to his right.

The decision is referred upstairs with the umpires wanting to check whether the ball bounced before it was taken by Saha.

The TV umpire zooms in and rules that the ball has touched the ground before it was taken by Saha. A close escape for Dickwella and Sri Lanka.

Dickwella is struggling after he switched to playing defensively and is having a few nervy moments.

Bhuvneshwar strikes with the key wicket of Dickwella, who shuffles across but misses and is given out leg before wicket. The umpire gives it out and Dickwella takes the DRS but the decision stands with the ball going on to clip the stumps.

Bhuvneshwar strikes again as Perera misses a full delivery and is struck right in front of the wickets. The batsman takes the DRS and the ball tracker shows that the ball would have gone over the stumps as Sri Lanka survive.

He follows it up with a good bouncer as Perera somehow avoids it efore he manages to see off the over.

Shami gets his man soon after with another cracking delivery. The fast bowler gets it to reverse swing as it comes in late and breaks through the defences of Chandimal to bowl him for 20.

Five wickets for victory and with around 30 minutes for stumps.

15:31   Mathews out for 12, SL 4 down

SL 51-4 (16 ovs); Target to win: 231 | Scorecard

It will be interesting to see Niroshan Dickwella's approach, he is a naturally attacking batsman but needs to bat for time here.

Dickwella gets off the mark with a single before Chandimal edges the last ball from Umesh for a four through thirdman.

Shami replaces Bhuvneshwar, who bowled a fantastic first spell of two for three in seven overs including five maidens.

Shami starts with a short ball and Dickwella goes for the pull as he manages to get it over the fielder on the fine leg fence for a six. Two balls later, he shuffles across a long way and back before he flicks Shami behind square on the leg side for another six. He immediately points out to umpire Nigel Llong that were three fielders behind square on the leg side following which it is ruled a no-ball.

Few words exchanged as India's players have a go at Dickwella, who then calmly picks a single on the leg side.

In between overs, Ashwin exchanged a few words with Dickwella as Chandimal had to intervene and then Kohli speaks to the umpires.

Umesh has not been able to make an impression so far. He drops one short as Mathews slaps him through the covers for a four.

However, the next ball is full and comes in as Mathews is struck on the pads but the umpire turns down the LBW appeal.

India take the DRS and the decision is overturned with the ball tracker showing it would have hit the leg stump.

What a superb review from the Indian team as Sri Lanka lose their fourth wicket with Mathews dismissed for 12.

The wicket has further boosted India's chances of pushing for victory. Niroshan Dickwella is the last recognised batsman for Sri Lanka and another wicket here and India will be among the tail.

Pacers Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Mohammed Shami claimed a wicket each, that of the openers to raise India's hopes of pushing for victory.

With light expected to fade later in the evening, India could possibly bowl another 20-25 overs in the post-tea session. If Sri Lanka don't lose a wicket or two quickly after the tea break, then it would brighten their chances of drawing the game.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar opens the bowling as he bowls a few outswingers to right-hander Sadeera Samarawickrama before he cuts him in half with one that comes in sharply.

He gets his man off the next delivery as the youngster looks to play a drive through the off-side but ends up inside edging it back on to his stumps to be bowled for a duck.

The delivery was well wide and Sadeera threw his bat at it without any feet movement but only managed to drag it back. A poor shot from the opener as India strike early.

Just one over from Gamage before he makes way for Shanaka. And the move pays off as Shanaka bowls Ashwin through the gate for seven to revive some Sri Lankan hopes.

Ashwin went for the big drive through the off-side playing away from his body but the ball seems to have hit a crack and jagged back in to rattle the stumps.

The match is interestingly poised as far as Sri Lanka are concerned. India have been reduced to 269 for six in 74 overs, for an overall lead of 147 runs.

11:38   Kohli keeps India afloat as Test looks set for a draw

India 251-5 (69 ovs) & 172 vs SL 294 | Scorecard

It has been another good session for the Sri Lankan as they picked up four wickets in the morning session. Lakmal was once again the wrecker-in-chief with the ball for the visitors as he picked up three wickets.

India were 251 for five in 69 overs at the lunch break for an overall lead of 129 runs.

Captain Kohli kept India afloat with a solid innings of 41 while wickets fell around him in the morning session on Day 5.

Rahul again failed to convert his half-century into a triple figure mark as he was bowled by Lakmal for 79, who then scalped Pujara (22) and Rahane (0) in a single over.

Ravindra Jadeja promoted to No. 6 failed to make most the opportunities as he fell after scoring just nine.

Except for a batting collapse for India immediately after lunch, the Test match looks set for a tame draw with not much time left to push for a result.
11:33   Jadeja out for 9, India 5 down

India 251-5 (69 ovs) & 172 vs SL 294 | Scorecard

Perera bowling to his opposite number Ashwin, who is content to watchfully defend the over with lunch just round the corner.

Interesting field for Kohli with two fielders in the drive on the off-side and Lakmal bowling it full and wide trying to tempt the Indian captain.

First four balls were wide and left alone by Kohli before he ducks under a bouncer before he confidently blocks the last ball of the session.
image
11:22   Jadeja out for 9, India 5 down

India 249-5 (66 ovs) & 172 vs SL 294 | Scorecard

Perera ends Jadeja's painful innings as he gets him caught in the slips for a slow knock of nine from 41 balls. Offie Perera got one to bounce more than expected, getting the edge which wicketkeeper Dickwella failed to collect but the rebound went to Thirimanne at first slip, who does well to dive forward and taken it cleanly.

India continue to chip away at the wickets, picking their fourth of the morning session.

And if Sri Lanka could now scalp Kohli they would stand in with a good chance to push for an unlikely win.

India, who have a lead of 127 runs, are still not completely safe and all hopes rest on Kohli, who is looking solid on 39.

Are India looking to attack the Sri Lankans through Jadeja? Or are they looking to give the left-hander some batting practice?

Lakmal produces another good delivery to beat Jadeja but the leg before appeal is turned down. Jadeja is up against a good spell by Sri Lanka's pacers and so far he can only defend.

Gamage tries a short ball to Kohli, who pulls it to deep square leg for a single and Kohli clips the last ball to fine leg for one.

Shanaka comes back into the attack, replacing Lakmal, who bowled a superb eight over spell, claiming two wickets.

The umpires decide to consult with the TV umpire, who confirms that the catch is clean and Pujara has to make his way back after scoring 22.

India in trouble as Lakmal strikes again in the over as Ajinkya Rahane is given leg before wicket.

He decides to take the DRS after consulting with his captain Kohli. The ball tracker shows the ball is clipping the top of the stump which means the umpire decision stays and Rahane makes his way back for a duck.

The field is well spread out as Rahul collects another easy single on the off-side to slowly inch his way towards the century.

But all hopes that Rahul harboured of getting to a hundred are foiled by Lakmal. The pacer produces a beauty to find the gap between the bat and ball to bowl Rahul after a good innings of 79. The right-hander, who was playing sedately in the morning session, played all over a straight delivery as he tried to turn it on the leg side.

Captain Virat Kohli, who has a below-par record at Eden Gardens, walks out to bat to a huge cheer. Lakmal nearly accounts for the India captain with the away going delivery as he comes forward to defend.

08:59   1st Test: Will India push for victory on Day 5?
Welcome to the coverage of the fifth and final day of the first Test between India and Sri Lanka in Kolkata on Monday.

India staged a superb turnaround on Day 4 courtesy of their openers -- Shikhar Dhawan and KL Rahul -- who put on a rollicking opening stand of 166 runs.

Dhawan threw away his wicket at 94, but Rahul was unbeaten on 73 when bad light stopped play with the hosts on 171-1.

Cheteshwar Pujara was on two at the other end with India 49 runs ahead with nine wickets in hand, after they were bowled out for 172 in their first innings.

Earlier, Sri Lanka were dismissed for 294 in their first innings after number nine batsman Herath top-scored for the tourists with a defiant 67.

It remains to be seen if India continue their positive approach and push for victory on Day 5, but pacer Bhuvneshwar said it all depends on how things pan out in the first hour of the day.

"We would love to give them batting and get them out but all depends on the first hour of play," said Bhuvneshwar.

"It is a bit tricky. If we give them 250 in around 40-45 overs, they could chase it down so we have to play it safe," he added.
