Captain Virat Kohli hit his fifth double century to steer India to a mammoth 610 for six declared in their first innings on Day 3 of the second Test in Nagpur on Sunday.

India took a commanding lead of 405, before they claimed an early wicket. Sri Lanka opener Sadeera Samarawickrama was bowled for a duck in the first over of the innings by Ishant Sharma.

They finished the third day on 21 for one in nine overs, still trailing India by 384 runs.

Kohli topscored for the hosts with 213 while Murali Vijay, Cheteshwar Pujara and Rohit Sharma also scored hundreds.

The first match of the three-Test ended in a draw in Kolkata.

Karunaratne plays a beautiful drive off Ishant, clipping a full delivery in the gap through midwicket for a four.

Thirimanne watchfully defends the next over from Ashwin, who bowls on a good line just on and around the off-stump.

Ishant switches to round the wicket after a few deliveries in his third over. The ball is bowled on the pads as Karunaratne flicks it fine for a single.

Ishant working up a good pace and making the batsmen play by bowling on a good line and length.

Ashwin gets one to turn square, pitching on the rough and turning big as Karunratne is beaten all ends up but wicketkeeper Saha does well to collect it.

Ishant gets one to hit the crack and bounce more than expected as Thirimanne does well to keep it down with a soft bottom hand, getting hit high on the bat.

The Sri Lankan players are content to bat for stumps as Ashwin bowls his third maiden over on the trot.

Ravindra Jadeja to bowl the final over of the day, as he replaces Ishant, who bowled a good first spell of one for 15 in four overs.

Karunaratne comes down and flicks Jadeja through midwicket as Pujara at mid-on runs to his left and puts in the full length dive to save the boundary.

At stumps on Day 3, Sri Lanka reach 21 for one in nine overs, trailing India by 384 runs.

After taking a huge lead, Ishant Sharma gives India the dream start with the ball. He strikes with the second ball with the wicket of Sadeera Samarawickrama, as he offers no shot this time around and is bowled for a duck.

Lahiru Thirimanne gets off the mark with a boundary fine on the leg side. However, Ishant gets the leading edge off the next ball but it goes through the gap between the slips and gully for another four.

Off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin to share the new ball. He gets into the thick of things rightaway as Karunaratne is struck on the pads off the first ball but the leg before wicket appeal is turned down.

The next ball hits the pads and lobs on the leg side as Ashwin appeals for catch off an inside edge but again it is turned down.

Karunaratne wards off some pressure as he crashes the third ball through the covers for a four to get off the mark and keeps strike with one from the last ball.

Rohit looks in no hurry as he gently drives Shanaka on the off-side for a single. Saha drops the ball at his feet and Rohit calls him for a quick run.

Rohit chips down the track and drives it to sweeper cover for a single to raise India's 600, the 30th time they have gone past that score.

In the next over, Rohit comes down the track and lofts him back over his head for a four. He gets an inside edge off the next ball to take his score to 98, which brings up the double hundred for the bowler Perera.

And that also takes India's lead past the 400-run mark.

Rohit takes a single from the first ball of the next over to bring up his century from 160 balls, the first time has scored a hundred after a long wait of four years.

The Mumbai batsman drives Shanaka through the off-side for three runs to bring up the landmark before Captain Kohli declares the innings.

India declare on a mammoth 610 for six in their first innings to take a huge lead of 405 runs.

Rohit finishes unbeaten on 102, the fourth centurion of the Indian innings after Kohli, who made 213, while Vijay and Pujara also got centuries.

Rohit also keen to complete his hundred. He taps Shanaka on the leg side with the field spread around he is able to rush back for his second and then picks another couple of runs from the last ball to take his score to 89.

Ashwin takes a single to give the strike back to Rohit, who cuts it to deep point for one.

Perera renews himself as he claims another wicket, that of Ashwin, who is bowled for five as India lose their sixth wicket.

Wriddhiman Saha walks in at No. 8 as he blocks the last ball of the over.

Kohli gives Gamage the charge and hammers the pacer through the off-side for a four. He is looking to play a few more shots as 10 come from the over.

In the next over,  Kohli reverse sweeps Perera for a boundary through thirdman. He comes down the track and looks for a big hit down the ground but mishits it straight into the hands of the fielder at long-on.

Kohli walks back after a splendid innings of 213 from 267 balls, having hit 17 fours and two sixes.

New batsman Ravichandran Ashwin has a couple of close run out calls early in his innings as the fielders miss the stumps both times.

India are 590 for five in 172 overs at the final drinks break, having stretched their lead to 385 runs.

Rohit is on course for his century, having stroked his way to 85, while Ashwin is on three.

The Indian players are all in their whites which means that India could declare soon and have a few overs at the Sri Lankan players before stumps.

A single each to the two batsmen off Gamage to raise the 150-run stand for the fifth wicket as India's domination continues.

A couple of more singles takes Kohli to 198 before he picks another run off Gamage to take his score to 199.

He completes his double century, his fifth in Tests, with a single off Perera to reach the landmark off 259 balls.

That will rank as one of the easiest double centuries of Kohli's career, against a mediocre Sri Lankan bowling attack on a flat pitch at Nagpur.

It remains to be seen how long India will continue to bat, having taken their total to a massive 362 runs with 20 overs still left in the day.

Looking at Rohit's intentions it seems India are keen to score some quick runs. He throws his bat at a wide delivery from Perera but only for a single to sweeper cover before Kohli steers it fine for two runs followed by two more singles.

Lakmal comes into the attack in place of Shanaka. He tries the short ball as Rohit eases himself to another pull shot over the leg side for a four.

While Kohli is content to pick singles and make his way to another double hundred, Rohit is ensuring that he gets the boundaries and not let the tempo drop.

A couple of singles before Kohli whips Perera over midwicket for a six to take his score into the 190s and then keeps strike with a single from the last ball.

Kohli closes in on another double century as India reach 558 for four, for an overall lead of 354 runs.

Perera to start with the ball in the post-tea session. Kohli starts off with a single off the first ball and Rohit takes one from the next delivery. Kohli then drives the fifth ball through the covers for a couple to get four from the over.

Medium pacer Shanaka from the other end. Rohit takes a single before Kohli pull a short ball over midwicket for a four. The next ball is down the leg side as Dickwella is unable to stop it cleanly to give away two byes and another bye off the next ball as Dickwella does well to collect it down the leg side but hits the stumps to give away the run.

Rohit keeps strike with one from the last ball as Shanaka gives away nine runs from that over.

Shanaka bowls a full toss as Rohit flicks it through midwicket for two runs. The next ball is short as the right-hander pulls it over the same region for a four and then takes one to sweeper cover.

India are 530 for four in 161 overs, stretching their lead to 325 runs.

Captain Virat Kohli hit his second sucessive century to steer India to a commanding lead on the third day of the second Test in Nagpur on Sunday.

Kohli was unbeaten on 170 from 223 balls, hitting 14 fours and a six, while Rohit Sharma made 51 not out as India reached 507 for four at the tea break, to extend their lead to 302 runs.

Kohli was the third batsmen to score a century in the Indian first innings after Cheteshwar Pujara and Murali Vijay.

Sri Lanka barely managed to trouble Kohli and Rohit as the duo picked up singles and twos at will, while hitting boundaries at regular intervals during their 97-run stand for the fifth wicket.

Kohli hit his second successive Test century on day three of the ongoing second Test against Sri Lanka in Nagpur on Sunday, November 26.

The hundred in Nagpur is his 12th as captain and he surpassed the legendary Sunil Gavaskar's record of most Test hundreds scored by an Indian captain.

The century in Nagpur is Virat's 10th in all international cricket this year.

He now holds the record of most hundreds scored by a captain in a single year in international cricket.

Sri Lanka are running short of ideas and look like just going through the motion.

The going is too easy for the Indians with singles available at will and the regular loose deliveries in between which are going for boundaries.

Part-time medium pacer Dimuth Karunaratne comes into the attack. Rohit tries to glance the first ball fine but misses and get three leg byes and then takes one followed by three more singles to get seven from the over.

Two runs from Herath's next over before a single to Rohit off Karunaratne brings up India's 500, in the 153rd over.

Pacer Gamage comes back into the attack as Kohli picks a single. Rohit, who has been stranded on 49 for 10 balls, finally gets the landmark with a single on the off-side.

Rohit completes his half-century from 98 balls, his fourth in five innings in Test cricket.

India are 504 for four in 155 overs, with an overall lead of 299 runs.

Herath comes back into the attack. Rohit targets him immediately as he comes down the track and lofts him back over his head for a four. A few deliveries later, he heaves the left-arm spinner over midwicket for another boundary.

Five singles off Shanaka's next including three singles and two runs to Rohit off the last ball behind square on the leg side.

Rohit continues to attack Herath as he chips down the track and again and lofts it over midwicket for another four.

The runs are coming at a good rate with both Rohit and Kohli collecting easy single with regular boundaries in between.

The field is pushed back for Rohit against Herath as he steers the spinner on the off-side for two runs and then sweeps the last ball for a single to fine leg.

India are cruising on 483 for four in 148 overs, stretching their lead to 278 runs.

Kohli is looking on course for another double century as he eases his way to 159, while Rohit has been positive from the start to score 42.

Off-spinner Perera to start off with the ball after the lunch break. Rahane turns the third ball to the leg side for a single to get off the mark and Kohli takes one two balls later for his first runs of the second session.

Pacer Gamage from the other end. Three singles from the over as India look to keep the scoreboard ticking and build the total.

Perera bowls a full toss but Rahane is unable to make most as he gently drives it to the fielder in the covers. And that proves to be crucial as Perera strikes with the next ball as Rahane cuts one straight to the fielder to perish for two to continue his run of poor scores in the series.

Comeback man Rohit Sharma, playing his first Test after a long wait of 13 years, gets off the mark in style. He drives a full delivery from Perera through the covers for a four to start off in confident fashion.

Rohit punches another short ball through the off-side for three runs as the fielder stops it inside the ropes. Kohli steers the next ball through the off-side for two runs and keeps strike with one from the last ball.

Meanwhile, Sri Lanka endure another blow as pacer Gamage injures his knee as he slides across at mid-on to stop the drive from Rohit.

With Gamage going off with injury, infact being helped off the ground by the support staff, pacer Lakmal comes into the attack.

Kohli chips down the track and lofts Lakmal over mid-off for a four before he takes a single on the leg side and Rohit blocks the rest of the over.

Since his arrival, Kohli has been quite match aware and not even once during his stay he has let the momentum dip, hitting boundaries at regular intervals.

His positive approach helped Pujara play the patient innings that he did, grinding his way to a hundred while Kohli played the shots at the other end.

Rohit also shows his positive side as he comes down the track and lofts Perera over mid-on for a six.

In the next over, Rohit has a close shave as he inside edges Lakmal but the ball narrowly misses the stumps and goes for a four fine on the leg side.

Kohli takes on Perera as he chips down the track and lofts him down the ground, just about clearing the fielder at long-on for a six to bring up his 150 in grand style.

The India captain brings up his landmark from 193 balls, having hit 14 fours and a six. That also takes India past the 450-run mark as their lead also goes above the 250-run mark.

Captain Virat Kohli led from the front with his second successive century to guide India to 404 for three in 127 overs at lunch on Day 3, to extend their lead to 199 runs.

Kohli, who resumed on 54, played positively to complete his 19th Test century from 130 balls as India continued to swell their lead and maintain their stronghold on the match.

He was unbeaten on 123 at the break, having hit 13 fours in his 161-ball knock, while Ajinkya Rahane was yet to open his account.

Cheteshwar Pujara, who played a patient innings of 143, fell a few minutes before the lunch interval when he was bowled by Dasun Shanaka.

Overall, India made 92 runs in 29 overs for the loss of one wicket in the morning session.

They will look to continue batting in the post-lunch session and look to extend their lead to around the 300-400 mark before putting Sri Lanka into bat late in the day.

Perera beats Kohli with one that goes straight and beats the right-hander as wicketkeeper Dickwella appeals for stumping. The decision is referred to the TV umpire but Kohli's feet are back in the crease before the bails were dislodged.

In the next over, Kohli casually walks down the track and flicks Shanaka through midwicket for a four. India get four more singles to get eight runs from the over.

Kohli then punches off-spinner Perera straight down the ground past mid-off for another boundary and then takes a single which gives him the strike for the next over.

Shanaka finally gets Sri Lanka the breakthrough with the wicket of Pujara. The right-hander is beaten by a yorker which sneaks under his bat and bowls him to end a splendid marathon innings of 143 from 362 balls, ending a 183-run stand for the third wicket.

Kohli seems to be in some discomfort around his hamstring area as he stretches back quickly after Pujara had driven it straight back to the bowler.

Kohli turns Lakmal on the leg side for a single to take his score to 99 before Pujara hands him back the strike.

Kohli clips the fifth ball to deep midwicket for one to bring up his 19th Test century, from 130 balls.

Kohli steals a quick single to mid-off as the fielder has a shy but misses giving the Indian captain two runs. The India captain then drives the next ball through the covers for a four to take his score into the 80s.

Lakmal bowls a good short ball on the body as Kohli looks to avoid but the ball gets hit on the handle and goes fine on the leg side for a four.

He takes a single from the last ball to sweeper cover and again Sri Lanka concede an overthrow due to their shoddy work on their field as Kohli picks the second run to get 12 from the over.

At the first drinks break, India have cruised to 360 for two in 114 overs with Kohli on 91 and Pujara on 132.

Pujara gets his first runs of the day off the 23rd ball he faces, with a single on the leg side off Gamage.

Kohli has no problems in keeping the runs coming as he clips the last ball to deep square for another run, which also helps him keep the strike.

The India captain turns Herath on the leg side through square leg for two runs and again keeps strike with one from the last ball.

Gamage switches to round the wicket but India continue to keep the scoreboard ticking with three singles from the over.

Herath follows it up with a maiden over before Suranga Lakmal comes in for Gamage.

Pujara picks up a run before Kohli keeps strike with one from the last ball. In the next over, Pujara gets his first boundary of the day as he slaps a wide delivery from Herath square on the off-side.

India are 341 for two in 110 overs, having extended their lead to 136 runs.

Pacer Gamage starts off proceedings for Sri Lanka on Day 3. Cheteshwar Pujara is on strike and not surprising that he carefully plays out the first over of the day, which turns out to be a maiden.

At the other end, Virat Kohli wastes no time as he punches the first ball he faces, from Rangana Herath, down to long-on for one. Pujara is beaten by one which hold it's line and goes straight through as he pokes outside the off-stump.

Kohli plays a cracking drive through the covers off Gamage for a four to raise the 100-run stand for the third wicket. He defends the next four balls before retaining strike with a single from the last ball.

Kohli then steals a second run off an overthrow as a casual Sri Lanka take it easy on the field after the fielder at long-on sent the throw back but no one was alert enough to stop it. He picks up another single before Pujara continues to defend.

Kohli keen to keep the runs coming as he flicks Gamage on the leg side for two runs and then takes one and again Pujara blocks everything.

Welcome to the coverage of Day 3 of the second Test between India and Sri Lanka in Napgur on Sunday.

After a dominant showing with the bat on the second day, when they lost only one wicket while taking their total above the 300-run mark, India would be looking for another good day with the bat.

On Day 2, Murali Vijay and Cheteshwar Pujara both hit hundreds and combined in a stand of 209 to hand India a big first innings lead over Sri Lanka.

The hosts reached the close of play on 312 for two with Pujara unbeaten on 121 after his 14th Test hundred and had captain Virat Kohli not out on 54 at the other end.

The world's top-ranked Test side were ahead by 107 in the first innings after Sri Lanka were bundled out for 205 on the opening day.

Vijay, who missed India's three-Test series in Sri Lanka with injury and was left out of the drawn first match in Kolkata, celebrated his return to the side with 128 runs.

He top-edged a full toss from left-arm spinner Rangana Herath to be caught at short fine leg and was the lone success for the Sri Lankan attack after two sessions of fruitless toil.
