13:23   Ashwin FASTEST to 300 wickets as India crush SL

SL 166-all out (47 ovs) & 205 vs India 610-6 | Scorecard

Off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin picked up four for 63, including eight in the match, to become the fastest in the history of Test cricket to 300 wickets.

Ashwin achieved the landmark in just his 54th Test, beating Dennis Lillee's record, who picked up 300 wickets in his 56th Test match in November 1981.

Ashwin's haul helped India bowl out Sri Lanka for a lowly 166 in their second innings as the hosts registered a huge victory by an innings and 239 runs.

This equal India's biggest victory in Test cricket by an innings margin and gives them a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

It was a disappointing effort from the Sri Lankans, who resumed on 21 for one, before they lost seven wickets in the morning session.

Deservedly, Ashwin finished off the match with Gamage's wicket which also helped him complete 300 wickets in Tests.

The next Test will be played in New Delhi from Saturday, December 2.

While Ashwin is chasing the record of the fastest to 300 Test wickets, on the other end Umesh is looking for his 100th Test wicket.

Umesh beats Lakmal for pace and some reverse swing as it hits him on the pads before he has a wild swing but is beaten.

Umesh then gets one to keep low as Lakmal fails to make connection again and is beaten off the last ball as he tries to slash it square.

Ashwin gets one to move away as Gamage is beaten and the Indians take the DRS with the bails having come off. The replays confirm that Gamage is bowled as India register a crushing victory in the second Test to take a 1-0 lead.

Chandimal looks to loft the last ball down the ground but fails to make proper connection as it goes on the bounce to the fielder at mid-on.

Umesh gets one to bounce extra as Chandimal again is struck high on the bat as he fends it awkwardly. He slices it straight to deep square leg to perish after a good innings of 61 as Sri Lanka stand just one wicket away from a huge defeat.

Lakmal also swings his arm as he comes down and looks to loft Ashwin down the ground but he has not made a clean connection. However, he manages to beat Umesh, who is halfway down at long-on, as he runs backward but can't get to the ball.

Chandimal also chances his arms as he slog sweeps Ashwin over midwicket, clearing the fielder who is also halfway down, for another boundary.

With the two batsmen attacking the spinners, India bring back Ishant. And he nearly claims a wicket as Lakmal hits one straight back but the tall pacer is unable to hold on despite getting his hands to it and drops an easy return catch.

He gets a leading edge off the next ball and once again the ball falls in empty spaces and goes over the covers for a four.

Lakmal takes a single before Chandimal steers it behind point for a four to bring up his second fifty of the match.
