Hardik Pandya and Mahendra Singh Dhoni hit half-centuries before a fine showing from their bowlers saw India outclass Australia by 26 runs in the rain-hit opening ODI in Chennai, on Sunday.

India were reeling on 87 for five before Pandya stroked 83 from 66 balls, adding 118 runs for the sixth wicket with Dhoni, to lead India's recovery after a horror start and power them to 281 for seven in their 50 overs.

In reply, Australia never got going with the bat and were bowled out for 134 after being set a revised target of 164 runs in 21 overs following a rain delay of nearly two and half hours.

Leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal was the pick of the bowlers for India as he claimed three for 30, while Kuldeep Yadav and Hardik Pandya picked up two wickets each.
