England elect to bat; Pujara dropped

England captain Joe Root has won the toss and elected to bat against India in the series opener in Birmingham.

"We were looking to bowl on this wicket," says India captain Virat Kohli at the toss.

India have made a big decision to drop their No. 3 Cheteshwar Pujara as KL Rahul takes his place.

While Ravichandran Ashwin is the lone spinner in the playing XI, as the visitors go in with three fast bowlers in Mohammed Shami, Umesh Yadav and Ishant Sharma.

India have gone in with five batsmen with wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik slotted at No. 6 and all-rounder Hardik Pandya providing the balance with both bat and ball.
