Woakes was unbeaten on 120, while Sam Curran made 22 not out to guide England to 357 for six in 81 overs, stretching their lead to 250 runs, before bad light play ended early.

Jonny Bairstow was unlucky to miss his century as he fell caught behind for 93, after he had put on 189 runs for the sixth wicket with Woakes.

England lost a few quick wickets in the morning session as they were reduced to 89 for four at the lunch interval.

Jos Buttler fell for 24 as England slipped to 131 for five before Woakes and Bairstow put the innings back on track with some positive batting during their sixth wicket stand.

But the two spinners struggled with Ravichandran Ashwin giving away 68 runs in his 17 overs and Kuldeep Yadav conceding 44 runs in his nine overs.

England 321-6 (75 ovs) vs India 107 | Scorecard

It is proving to be quite easy for the two England batsmen with nothing much happening for the Indian bowlers.

Ashwin is picked for three singles off his 16th over, he has conceded 64 runs so far at over four per over.

And to add to India's grief is that captain Virat Kohli is battling a stiff back and time and again is going off the field for some treatment.

The partnership between Woakes and Bairstow is 176 at the moment, the highest sixth wicket stand for England against India in Tests.

Ashwin is taken off as left-arm spinner Kuldeep comes into the attack. Bairstow leans forward to defend and is beaten but the leg before shout is turned down by the googly which comes in.

The impact looks outside the line of off-stump but India want to take the review, with the 80-over mark fast approaching.

And as expected the impact is outside the line and the decision stands, with India losing their second and final review.

Sourav Ganguly is unhappy with Kohli's captaincy, especially his field placing.

'The bowler must go up to the captain and tell him to put some fielders close to the bat in catching positions.

"Virat Kohli is letting the game drift," says Dada.

Bairstow was stuck in the 90s for a long time and he misses out a well deserved century. He throws his bat at a wide delivery from Pandya only to get an edge and wicketkeeper Karthik takes a superb diving catch to his right.

Bairstow walks back for 93, after putting on 189 runs for the sixth wicket with Woakes, who has hit a century. Their partnership has put England firmly control as they stretch their lead to 213 runs.

15:10   India face uphill task on Day 3

India 107-all out (35.2 ovs) vs England | Scorecard

Welcome to the coverage of Day 3 of the second Test between England and India at Lord's on Saturday.

It was a horror second day for India after a washed out Day 1 as the visitors were bowled out for a lowly 107, with James Anderson taking five wickets.

After the entire first day was lost to rain, further wet conditions forced a delayed start with England captain Joe Root eventually winning the toss and putting India in to bat.

Root was clearly hoping that the lingering damp and overcast conditions would benefit Anderson and the 36-year-old took full advantage with some outstanding swing bowling.

In the brief morning session, Anderson got England off to a fine start, clean bowling opener Murali Vijay before removing KL Rahul, who was caught behind by wicketkeeper Jonny Bairstow.

After a rain delay, Cheteshwar Pujara was run out by debutant Ollie Pope and a downpour followed immediately.

When play resumed, seamer Chris Woakes, brought in to replace Ben Stokes, who is at a court hearing in Bristol, got the prize wicket of India skipper Virat Kohli for 23 leaving the tourists, who trail 1-0 in the series, at 49 for four.

Only off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, batting at number eight, provided any real resistance, making 29 in a 49-minute knock before he was trapped lbw by Stuart Broad.

India will be hoping for a similar showing from their bowlers but the weather has improved considerably and batting should be much for the easier for the England batsmen.

However, a few early wickets could bring India back into the contest else England look likely to run away with the game with a big score in the first innings.
