Earlier, South Africa recovered after a horror start to post 286 in their first innings. AB de Villiers (65) and Faf du Plessis led the recovery with a 114-run partnership for the fourth wicket.

The lower order also left the Indians frustrated with useful contributions with the bat. Quinton de Kock hit a quickfire 43 from 40 balls, Vernon Philander made 23, Keshav Maharaj scored a useful 35 and Kagiso Rabada made 26, while Dale Steyn was unbeaten on 16 as the last four wickets added 82 runs to help the hosts finish on a high.

Rohit Sharma has his task cut out against a firing South African bowling attack. He is beaten all ends up off the last ball, which is similar to one which Kohli but Rohit does well to play inside the line.

Bhuvneshwar gets it right off the next ball, pitching outside the off-stump and moving away, as Elgar pokes and gets an edge to be caught behind for a duck.

A dream start for India with the ball as Bhuvneshwar strikes in the very first over.

Bhuvneshwar nearly makes it two out of two. New batsman Hashim Amla gets an unplayable delivery first up, bounce and movement as the right-hander nearly gets an edge. The pacer does it again off the last ball of the over as Amla is beaten again to end a wonderful first over.

13:34   SA elect to bat; Rahane dropped, Bumrah debuts
South Africa captain Faf du Plessis has won the toss and elected to bat against India in the first Test match at Cape Town.

South Africa are going in with four fast bowlers plus the spinner in Keshav Maharaj.

Losing the toss is no bother for India captain Virat Kohli, who admits that he would have also bowled after winning the toss.

The big news is that Jasprit Bumrah has been handed his Test debut as India go in with three fast bowlers. Ravichandran Ashwin is the lone spinner, while all-rounder Hardik Pandya is also included as India go in with five bowlers.

13:19   World No. 1 India face stiff examination vs South Africa
Welcome to the coverage of Day 1 of the opening Test between India and South Africa in Cape Town, on Friday.

India's long winning streak in Test cricket is under threat in a quick-fire three match series against South Africa, where their status as the top ranked nation in the format faces a stiff examination.

Virat Kohli's side have won nine successive series to climb to the top of the International Cricket Council's rankings but most of the success has come on batting friendly wickets.

But while past touring sides have crumbled under the barrage of pace, this is an experienced India squad, 13 of whom have previously toured South Africa and will know what to expect.

Though India, top of the International Cricket Council's (ICC) Test rankings, have won their last nine Test series in a row, stretching back to August 2015, their record in South Africa is poor.

Since 1992, they have won just two of the 17 Tests played there, losing five of the six series, with the 1-1 draw in 2010-11 their best return.
