Kohli turns Maharaj on the leg side for one and Parthiv uses his wrist to good effect to flick the spinner through midwicket for two runs.

In the next over, Kohli picks another single before Parthiv throws his bat at a wide delivery from Ngidi but is beaten. Interestingly, captain Kohli encourages him despite the miss, and points out that if the shot does come off he will get a boundary.

Parthiv then goes after a short ball as he tries to pull but misses again and is all squared up by a beauty from Ngidi, full and slanting across the left-hander.

Parthiv takes a couple of steps down the track, trying to get to the pitch but gets a thick outside edge which flies past the slip fielder for a four. three balls later, he again comes down and this time he flicks Maharaj through midwicket for another boundary.

Parthiv looking to take charge as he drives Ngidi through the covers for a four in the next four, his third boundary in the space of six deliveries.

But the pacer Ngidi gets revenge two balls later as he gets Parthiv caught behind for 19. The left-hander plays away from his body, poking at one outside the off-stump but the ball moves away enough to take the edge.

Local boy Ngidi gets a huge cheer from his home fans after picking up his first wicket in Test cricket.

India are in a spot of bother at the moment on 164 for five, still trailing the Proteas by 171 runs

Captain Kohli is waging a lone battle, he is batting well on 79, having hit seven fours already.

A fielder placed straight behind the slips to counter Hardik Pandya's ramp shot. He gets a bottom edge off the last ball of the over which goes on the bounce and beats the slips for a single.

Morkel comes back into the attack, replacing Maharaj. He bowls a bit wide but Pandya is not interested before he crunches a short ball over midwicket for a cracking boundary.

Pandya keeps walking outside the off-stump but is being careful not to flirt with wide deliveries.

The fielder is still placed fine on the off-side boundary behind the slips anticipating the upper cut and it looks unlikely Pandya could fall into the trap, especially with Kohli at the other end, who is constantly advicing his partner.

Kohli taps Ngidi on the off-side and takes off for a quick single. Pandya keeps walking across his stumps and getting outside the line as Ngidi keeps going wide and wide.

Pandya punches a full delivery down the ground but Markram at mid-on does well to put in the dive and save some runs.

Kohli also takes a couple of steps down before he offers no shot to a wide delivery from Morkel, who then beats him with the wide outswinger.

Kohli looks set for a century and with seven overs left in the day, India will need him to stay unbeaten at close and try and get the landmark tomorrow.
