So that is close of play! 

No details yet about where the match stands but play is called off.

South Africa still need 224 for victory with Hashim Amla giving Elgar company at the other end. 

That was a great day for India showing plenty of mettle with the bat to push the lead to 240. 

India are in control of this Test but now it's up to the officials and the law book to take this match to its logical conclusion.

Lots of drama unfolding at the Wanderers after Elgar is struck on the helmet. 

And what do you know, while the captains and the match officials are having a chat, there is a bit of a drizzle now at the ground. 

The groundmen bring on the covers.

This just adds to the drama. 

The umpires have a chat with Kohli and he doesn't seemed too pleased as the umpires have asked the players to come off the field. 

Both captains have been called into the match referees room to have a chat about the situation.

The pitch is doing all sorts of things, making the ball jump and challenging the batsmen. But Amla and Elgar have done well so far to negotiate the bounce.

Bumrah replaces Bhuvi and starts with a stinger as Elgar gets the ball right into his thigh. 

He then gets a couple down to leg side. 

WOW! The short ball hits straight into Elgar's grill! That has shaken up the batsman a bit but the physio comes running and checks on Elgar's well being. 

All seems well with the batsman but the umpires and match referee gather to have a serious chat.

Shami continues. 

The ball comes into Elgar, it's short and he pulls the ball to the mid-wicket boundary for a four.

He then follows that up with a single on the off side.

Bhuvi continues and Elgar gets one coming into him. He plays that to fine leg for a single. 

Amla gets another one right on the gloves. He then leaves the one in the corridor.

One run comes off the over.

Shami continues. After 4 dot balls, Elgar plays the fifth ball, an in-swinger to the leg side for a single.

One run comes off the over as Amla defends the last ball of the over.

Bhuvi continues to Amla. Amla moves across so much. Wow! 

Amla then plays the ball down to third man for a couple.

Well another one takes off and hits Amla flush on the gloves. Thank god for that extra protection in the gloves.

Two runs come off the over.

Shami continues and Elgar gets a snorter as the ball brushes past his sleeve on the way to the keeper.

Good all-round cricket as  that is a maiden over.

Bhuvi continues and the ball rises sharply and hits Elgar on the gloves. The batsman throws the bat in pain and calls for medical attention. 

Elgar plays the fifth ball of the over to covers and scampers for a single.

Amla sees off the last ball as he lets it go. 

Just one run comes off the over.

Shami strikes! The ball climbs on to Markram, who goes after the ball and Parthiv completes a good catch to get their first wicket. 

Shami starts from the other end and he begins with 2 short balls to Elgar. 

The ball comes into Elgar, who does well to play it to fine leg for a single.

Bhuvneshwar opens the bowling for India. 

An in-swinger and Markram gets off the mark with a clean shot off his pads for a boundary to open South Africa's account.

Four runs come off the opening over.

India are all out for 247 in the 2nd innings. They have a 240-run lead and have set the hosts an improbable target of 241 to win this 3rd Test.

With the pitch behaving as it is, it will take a herculean effort from the hosts to go past the target and inflict a series sweep.

Philander is brought into the attack and does the job to end India's innings. Bumrah swings his arm blindly and the ball hits the toe-end of his bat. 

The ball goes aerial and goes straight into Rabada's palms at mid-off.   

Morkel continues and Ishant tries to go after everything, but makes no connection. 

And that is a maiden.  

Ngidi continues and Ishant smacks him through the cover region for a four. 

Ishant then plays the ball for a couple and then a single. 

Bumrah then safely sees off the next two deliveries as India's lead goes up to 240. 

Bumrah comes in to bat. 

Off the third ball he faces, gets hit on the shoulder! Smack!

That is a wicket-maiden. 

Morkel is brought back in the attack and strikes! 

He gets the prized catch of Bhuvneshwar, who is caught behind off the second ball of the over. The ball jumps on the batsman, who gets a faint edge, handing an easy catch to De Kock. 

He goes for a well-made 33.

Ngidi continues and that is two runs come off the over.

Rabada continues and bowls continuous short balls and that is a maiden.

Ngidi comes into the attack. 

South Africa showing no urgency at all as India continue to pile on the lead. 

Shami gets two to cover point before finally dismissing Shami. 

Shami swings his arms but this time the ball goes straight into the hands of De Villiers in the deep on the leg side. 

Shami is dismissed after an entertaining cameo. 

He made 27 off 28 balls.

Ishant safely sees off the over that produced two runs and a wicket.

Rabada continues and this time he goes around the wicket. 

Shami gets a single to fine leg and then Bhuvneshwar plays a shot to the off side and scampers for a single. 

Three runs come off that over. 

Shami and Bhuvi doing a good job to help swell India's lead. India now have a 224-run lead.

Philander continues and the batsmen take a couple of runs. 

Rabada comes back into the attack. 

Shami just going after the bowling here. He gets another maximum, this time over mid-wicket! Wow! 

The tailender then gets a single down to fine leg. 

Bhuvi then plays the ball to cover and sneaks a single to keep the strike.

Philander continues and Bhuvneshwar picks two runs to cover. 

He then sneaks a single down to mid-wicket. Good effort by Ngidi to try and run Bhuvi out but the batsman was way past his crease. 

Shami then swings his arms and gets a four behind  the keeper. 

Shami then gets another 3 runs to end the over.

Morkel continues. That is a full toss and Shami whacks it for a six on the leg side. The first of the match. 

Shami then defends well to see off the over.

Philander continues and Bhuvneshwar plays one to backward point for a single. 

Shami gets off the mark with a couple on the off side. He then plays the next ball to fine leg for a single to bring up India's 200-run lead.

Morkel continues and does the damage. Morkel angles the ball in and Rahane gets a nick as he plays it to the leg side. De Kock completes the catch to dismiss him for 46. 

Shami comes in to bat and sees off the next three balls without damage. 

Philander continues. 

Did Rahane get a nick? Nope. The replays showed that it brushed the batsman's thigh pad. Thankfully the hosts decided against taking the DRS.

Rahane ends the over with a single. 

Morkel opens the bowling in the third session and stats with a wide. Rahane chases it but does not connect.

He then plays the ball to mid-wicket and steals a single to bring up India's 200.

Bhuvi then plays a cracking shot wide of point for a couple. 

Bhuvi then plays it down the leg side and De Kock claims a catch. South Africa ask for a review. Replays show the ball has clipped the strap of the pads and the LBW is also ruled. No damage done for India as the Proteas lose a review.

India have their noses in front at tea, taking a 192-run lead.

This session clearly belonged to India, scoring 99 runs for the loss of just two wickets.

Rahane is batting on 46, while Bhuvneshwar is partnering him at the other with 23 runs against his name.

Phehlukwayo continues. Rahane takes a single off the first ball and then Bhuvneshwar takes a single to bring up the 50-run partnership.

Rahane plays the ball down to third man for a single. 

Bhuvneshwar ends the over with a good leave and that is tea.

Morkel continues. Rahane takes a single. 

Bhuvneshwar does well to see off that over untroubled.

Phehlukwayo continues and Rahane plays the ball to point for a run.

That is the only run that comes in the over.

Morne Morkel continues and what a beautiful over that has been! 

He nearly had Bhuvneshwar out twice!  The only run coning in that over is off the bat of Rahane. 

Rahane (41) and Bhuvneshwar (22) have built a decent partnership 45 as India gets a lead of 186.

Phehlukwayo, right-arm medium pacer, comes into the attack.

He starts with 2 runs to Bhuvneshwar and follows that up with five wides! 

Bhuvneshwar flashes at the ball and it flies over gully for a boundary. 11 runs come off  the over.

Rabada continues and this time it is Rahane who gets a life! 

He goes after the ball and is put down in the outfield by Ngidi.

Four runs come off the over.

Morkel comes back into the attack and Rahane plays the opening ball of the over to the leg side for a single.

Bhuvneshwar then plays it down to gully for a single.

Rahane takes a single and then Bhuvneshwar is dropped in the slips by Dean Elgar. What an expensive miss that could prove. 

Rabada continues and gifts India five wides as the ball went over the keeper's head for a four.

Nasty bounce and the ball flies off Rahane's gloves for a single to square leg.

That has led the concerned umpires to have a chat in the middle. 

There is an intense discussion here but they decide to continue with the proceedings.

Next ball Buvneshwar gets a couple on the off side.

A ball later Bhuvneshwar gets on top of the bounce and smacks it through mid-off for a boundary. 

12 runs come off that over.

Ngidi continues and he teases Bhuvneshwar. After two shot balls, Bhuvneshwar gets hold of a holf-volley and plays it past mid-off for a couple. Nice work by De Villiers at long-off to keep the ball from going to the boundary. 

Rabada continues the batsmen take a couple before Rahane plays a crisp cover-drive for four. 

The batsmen then sneak a couple each. 

India go past the 150-run lead as 8 runs come off the over.

Ngidi continues and Bhuvneshwar times the ball nicely to get two runs through mid-off. India get to 150

Bhuvneshwar fishes outside the off side. 

Another dot to finish the over. Two runs come off the over.

Bhuvneshwar comes in to bat and he starts off well with good defensive shots. 

He gets off the mark with a single on the leg side. 

Rahane gets a little ambitious and tries to go after the last ball of the over. Lucky for him he didn't get a nick as the ball flies straight to keeper De Kock.

Rabada continues. Pandya plays the ball straight into the hands of the bowler, who completes a good one-handed catch on his follow-through. 

Pandya gone for 4 as India lose their 6th wicket. 

Ngidi replaces the expensive Morkel and he starts with a maiden as drinks are called.

Rabada continues and he gives Rahane one run to backward point. 

Pandya gets a bit of clobbering on the gloves and one run comes off the over.

Philander continues.

Wow! Rahane, you beauty!

He starts the over with a beautiful punch through covers and two balls later he plays an impeccable on-drive for a another boundary. 

The last ball of the two produces two runs thanks to an overthrow by Morkel at cover. 

11 runs come off that over.

Rabada continues and the ball just sneaks through Kohli's defences. The ball angles back after pitching and goes right through to take out his off-stump bail.

Kohli is dismissed for 41.

Hardik Pandya comes to the crease and gets a stinger!

The ball flies off his hand, takes the aerial route but falls short off the fielder on the off side.

Pandya is in discomfort here and calls for the physio.

A short ball and Pandya had to duck for safety! Wow! 

Pandya ends the over with a couple down to third man. What an over!

Philander continues and is accurate here and gives just one run in the over.

Morkel continues and bowls a perfect line for Rahane to pounce on it and drive it for a boundary through covers.

Another lovely shot but well fielded by a full-stretched De Villiers at covers and he saved a certain boundary. 

But next ball, Morkel strays to the Rahane's pads and the batsman just guides it down to mid-wicket for a boundary. 

Philander continues and Kohli nearly chops it on to his stumps. No real intent in that shot at all. 

That is a maiden.

Kohli and Rahane have begun well here, post lunch. They've already taken 25 runs off 5.1 overs. 

Morkel continues and the batsmen are happy just playing the ball around and taking the singles.

Philander continues and what a glorious shot by Kohli, just plays a well-cover drive for a boundary. Three runs come off the over.

He then follows that up with a single.

The ball then keeps low as Rahane lets one go past his bat. 

Short and wide, slightly uppish and Rahane cuts it square on the off side for boundary. 

Nine big runs come off the over as India race to a 115-run lead.

Morkel continues and six runs come off his over. 

Philander replaces Rabada and wow! Kohli is beaten all ends up.

The Indian captain then gets a four to push India's lead to a 100.

Morne Morkel continues and Rahane gets off the mark with a single. 

3 runs come off the over. 

Rabada completes his over as Rahane plays one to mid-wicket. 

Lunch is called as Rabada cleans up Vijay to have India four down for 100. 

It's a disappointing turn of events as Vijay, in the company of Kohli, had done well to bat stoically after the South Africans took two wickets in the first 30 minutes of the day's play.

Rabada continues. He bowls a fuller length and gets the wicket of Vijay just before lunch.

Vijay is bowled all ends up bringing an end to his patient stay at the crease.

He is out for 25 and that is lunch.

Philander continues and the 100 comes up for India as Kohli gets two runs down to cover point.

India have now taken a 90 run lead, and going by the way the pitch is behaving getting a 150-run lead will prove decisive for India. 

Rabada continues and Kohli gets a life as the ball bounces just short of Markram at short-mid-wicket. 

One run comes off the over.

After Ngidi gives 10 runs, he is replaced by Philander. 

And the bowler does well to give just one run in the over.

Rabada continues and gives away 3 runs. 

Ngidi continues and gives away 5 runs. Kohli is batting well. 

Rabada continues and Vijay gets hit on the hand. He calls for a medical check while the umpires have a chat with the captains. 

India then get four byes down the leg side.  

Ngidi continues and the batsmen take five runs off him.

India have scored 15 runs off the last six overs as Kohli and Vijay continue to keep up to the challenge. 

Rabada continues and Kohli gets a run to backward point. 

Vijay is under the pump here as the ball whizzes past his stumps.

He then just plays the ball down to mid-off for a single.

Kohli leaves the ball alone off the last ball of the over.

Ngidi continues. 

Vijay plays the ball to covers for a single even as Kohli wants a second.

Two balls later, Ngidi over-pitches and Kohli gets in a good stride and plays it through the covers for a four and then runs a quick single off the next ball of the over.

6 runs come off the over.

Rabada continues and gets Kohli on the glove. The Indian captain calls for medical attention.

Kohli gets a bouncer and he dispatches that to the long on boundary.

Next ball Rabada then gets him to play. Kohli plays a misses. The ball then hits a crack and misses the inside edge of Kohli's bat. Good take by De Kock. 

Ngidi replaces Morkel and starts with a maiden.

After an hour of play, runs have been scarce but India have lost 2 wickets. 

Thanks to the pitch, South Africa have had the better of the morning. 

Rabada replaces Philander and gives a bye as drinks are called. 

Morne Morkel continues and Vijay gets a single. He then bowls a wide -- his second for the morning already. 

Next ball Kohli is let off of a dropped chance by Markram.

Philander continues and he is bowling a brilliant line here to Kohli.

Just one run off the over and India have a 57-run-lead.

Morkel continues and the ball keeps low. 

Vijay then plays the ball to backward point for a single.

Wow! Now the ball gets up on Kohli! 

Kohli fends off the last ball of the over. 

Four runs come off the over. 

Philander continues and Kohli gets off the mark with a four! 

India have a lead of 51 runs now as Morkel continues.

The ball gets the crack and Vijay gets one right in the upper thigh. 

And that is a maiden.

Philander continues and Vijay gets one run off the over.

Morkel replaces Rabada and starts with a maiden. 

After safely playing out the first five balls of the Philander over, Rahul pokes at the last delivery that is bowled wide. A good catch completed by Faf du Plessis in the slip cordon to send back Rahul for 16. 

Kagiso Rabada opens the bowling in the first over of the day and he starts off giving two runs as Vijay starts off nicely.

It will be interesting how the Indian batsmen will play out the first session of Day 3 as the cracks in the pitch get wider and batting will be a challenge
