Contempt proceedings against fans dropped

The Delhi High Court Thursday dropped contempt proceedings against two cricket fans for allegedly launching a media trial against the Board of Control for Crickt in India, following the closure of their web site, on which material against the board was uploaded by them.

Accepting the submission of Rahul Mehra and Shantanu Sharma that the web site on which they had uploaded certain material against the BCCI had been closed on August 3, a division bench comprising Chief Justice Arijit Passayat and Justice D K Jain dropped contempt proceedings against them.

The BCCI had filed a contempt petition agianst Sharma and Mehra, himself an advocate, alleging that they had launched a parallel media trial against the board even when their plea against it was pending before the court.

BCCI counsel Radha Rangaswamy stated that their action amounted to clear contempt of court.

Rangaswamy, however, admitted that no new material was uploaded by the duo after court's notices to them.

Mehra and Sharma had filed a PIL against the BCCI accusing it of mismanaging the game in the country.
