Hoggard shines for England

England hustled out the Pakistan Cricket Board XI for 117 after putting them in to bat on the first day of their three-day match on Thursday.

But there was more disappointment for captain Nasser Hussain when England batted. He was out for 23 as his side closed the day on 76-2.

Hussain, badly in need of a long stay at the crease, was passed fit to play after X-rays on his injured wrist and sore back. He opened the batting but after hitting four fours was caught behind the wicket.

The board's main destroyer was Yorkshire paceman Matthew Hoggard who ended with four for 13 off 11.3 overs.

Shoaib Malik was the home team's top scorer with 27, but wickets fell at regular intervals.

The second Test against Pakistan starts in Faisalabad next Wednesday. The first Test was drawn.
