Baroda pile huge total
A classy 181 by former India stumper Nayan Mongia and an enterprising 86 by skipper Jacob
Martin helped hosts Baroda amass 568 runs in their first
innings on the second day of the five-day Ranji Trophy
semi-final against Orissa, at the GSFC ground, near Baroda, on Friday.
Resuming at their overnight score of 319 for two wickets,
Baroda lost skipper Jacob Martin, who made a useful 86 runs while adding 177 runs for the third wicket with Mongia.
After the loss of Martin's wicket, Mongia then held centrestage as he scored 181, which contained 25 fours and a
huge six, in a 452-minute knock.
This is the second time that Mongia has helped Baroda to a good total. He contributed 61 runs against Tamil
Nadu in the quarter-finals on the same ground.
Experienced Tushar Arothe, who came to crease after the
fall of his skipper's wicket, also gave good support to Mongia
in a 75-run stand for the fourth wicket.
The tailenders also played a crucial role in helping
Baroda pile a huge total and the main contribution came
from medium pacer Irfan Pathan (Jr), who remained unbeaten on
40.
He was also involved in a ninth wicket partnership of 56
runs with Valmik Buch.
At draw of stumps, Orissa were four without loss, with
captain Shiv Sunder Das batting on four while his opening
partner Suresh Kumar is yet to open his account.
