Lara to play for English village team

Brian Lara, scorer of the highest individual Test and first class innings, is to play for an English village cricket team this season, the club's chairman said on Wednesday.

Lara will not be paid directly for his services for the Lashings club, in Kent, southern England, but will be financed by a bat sponsorship deal, David Folb told BBC Radio 5-Live.

The West Indian, whose 375 is the highest Test innings and his 501 for Warwickshire the best first class score, will make his debut on May 18. He will be available for a month and possibly again later in the season.

Folb said the team would also include West Indians Richie Richardson, Junior Murray, Jimmy Adams and Stuart Williams. Williams scored 3,000 runs for the club last season.

The Lashings club is financed by multi-millionaire Simon Noble, the head of a Caribbean-based Internet betting company.
