India retain out-of-form Ganguly as captain

India have retained Sourav Ganguly as captain for the tour to Zimbabwe despite his lack of batting form.

Sourav Ganguly "Ganguly's selection was a mere formality," Jaywant Lele, secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), told Reuters by phone from Baroda.

Ganguly led India to a memorable 2-1 home test series win against Australia last month but the left-handed batsman averaged just 17.66.

Australia won the subsequent one-day series 3-2, with the 28-year-old -- under pressure to retain the captaincy during the test series and who was ordered to put in some extra batting practice -- again struggling, making 93 runs in his five innings.

Lele said the board would name a list of probables for the Zimbabwe tour later on Sunday. The players would attend a training camp in Bangalore from May 13 to 18, after which the tour squad would be named.

India play two tests and a triangular one-day series also involving West Indies in Zimbabwe. The tour starts on May 27.
