Indian colts beat England

In a low-scoring match, India defeated England by three wickets in the first under-19 one-dayer between the two countries at Lal Bahadur stadium in Hyderabad on Friday.

Electing to bat first, England were all out for 127. The hosts, in reply, scored 130 for the loss of seven wickets in 26.1 overs.

The English lads lost opener J Sadler for one and skipper Ian Bell (27) early and never recovered. Nickey Peng (28) tried to stabilise the innings but spinner Vidyut Sivaramakrishna dismissed him, reducing the visitors to 62 for 3.

The Indian bowlers dominated the proceedings thereafter and sent the English batsmen back to pavilion in a quick succession though R Ferley made a defiant 27 as England were bundled out in 46 overs.

India's reply too was not very authoritative as they lost wickets at regular intervals. Openers Goutam Gambhir (18) and Vinayak Mane (12) perished to the tight bowling of Chris Tremlett and soon India were struggling at 61 for four.

However, skipper Ajay Ratra held one end while Maninder Singh (17) and Vidyut Sivaramakrishna (15) chipped in with useful contributions to edge close to the victory target.

Ratra was unbeaten on 22 as India surpassed the target and won the first one-dayer by three wickets.

The second match of the three-match series will be played at Vijayawada on February 4 while the third at Hyderabad, on February 6.
