Steve Waugh's the best: Dungarpur

Former Board of Control for Cricket in India president Raj Singh Dungarpur on Friday gave a new dimension to the debate over who the best batsman in the world is, rating Australia captain Steve Waugh higher than some of the greatest names ever.

Close on the heels of former South Africa great Barry Richards rating Brian Lara over Sachin Tendulkar as his choice for the slot, Dungarpur said, in Jaipur, Waugh is the best as he scores runs when they are needed the most.

"As a batsman I think not Brian Lara, not Sachin Tendulkar, but Steve Waugh is the best in the world as he scores runs when they are required the most," Dungarpur said.

"No other batsman, not even Don Bradman or Vijay Hazare, have scored more runs when required than Steve Waugh," he added.

Dungarpur felt India will miss the services of Anil Kumble during the home series against Australia and hoped experienced left-arm spinner Venkatpathy Raju would seize the opportunity provided to him once again and perform well.

"The Australians will not miss Brett Lee as much as the Indians will miss Kumble. After the new ball, India will have nobody to rely on. Perhaps Raju can fill the void if he bowls well," he said.

Reflecting on Australia's winning streak, he said: "Australia have a fine record recently but it is also true that most of their truimphs were against weaker sides -- like New Zealand, Zimbabwe and a much feeble Indian team on Australian wickets.

"But they no doubt have a strong side and much of India's chances will depend on the batting of Tendulkar, [Rahu] Dravid and [Sourav] Ganguly."
