Guyana board will not support boycott call over Hooper
Guyana's cricket board will not support any call for a boycott of the first Test between the West Indies and South Africa if Guyanese Carl Hooper is not appointed captain of the national side.
Media in the Caribbean have been awash with rumours that Guyanese fans would stay away from the first Test at Bourda next month if Hooper is not appointed in place of Jimmy Adams, who captained the West Indies in their 5-0 series defeat in Australia.
Board spokesman Terrence Holder told the Caribbean news agency CANA: "We certainly do not support any call for a boycott of the game in the event that Hooper is not named captain."
Holder said the Guyana board expected the West Indies Cricket Board to select the team in the best interest of West Indies cricket.
Hooper, who retired in 1999 and is a former West Indies vice-captain, has scored 889 runs -- with four centuries -- in the Busta Cup this year.
The WICB is due to announce the captain for the five-Test series against South Africa this week.
