Australia crush Windies

Australia crushed the West Indies by 74 runs in the opening clash of the tri-nation one-day series at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Thursday.

Batting first after winning the toss, Australia made 267 for six in their 50 overs before holding the West Indies to 193 for seven in their knock.

Andrew Symonds, with figures of 4 for 33 in 10 overs, was the pick of the Australian bowlers.

Earlier, a 74-run sixth-wicket partnership between Damien Martyn and Andrew Symonds helped Australia to 267-6.

he pair's total came from only 52 balls before Martyn was run out off the final delivery for 42. Symonds finished unbeaten on 38 off 26 balls, making the West Indies pay for dropping him on five, 17 and 23.

The two came together with Australia 193-5 in the 42nd over after skipper Steve Waugh had holed out for 29 in his 300th one-day international.

Earlier Australia got off to a great start thanks to a 111-run partnership for the second wicket between Mark Waugh and Ricky Ponting.

Waugh eventually fell for 51, well caught by Wavell Hinds at long-on for 51 while Ponting went in the 37th over for 73 when Ricardo Powell took a great diving catch at deep midwicket.
