My aim is to unite the winning candidates: Pawar

Former Maharashtra Chief Minister Sharad Pawar, who is contesting the January 19 Mumbai Cricket Association elections for the president's post, says his main aim is to unite the winning candidates after the elections.

Pawar, on Wednesday, declared his job is to ensure that there is just one team working after the elections. For that to happen, he added: "I should stand like a rock."

"Basically people who occupy these posts do not have to interfere with selection and technical committees. The aim is to use their position in society for the betterment of the game.

"I am not at all worried about defeat, as even former greats like Madhav Apte, Vijay Merchant and Duleepsinghji have lost elections related to sports.

"In fact, I honestly feel that a person like Sunil Gavaskar should lead this organisation and he truly deserves it," Pawar said.

He also praised his opponent, former Indian captain Ajit Wadekar, for his immense contribution to the game as player, captain, manager and selector.

Meanwhile, Wadekar said he is confident of winning and, with his vast experience as cricketer, administrator and vice-president of the MCA for eight years, should be able to do a good job.
