Record partnership by Laxman and Dravid

A record partnership between V V S Laxman, who scored a swashbuckling double century (217), and skipper Rahul Dravid (188) helped South Zone score 595 for 4 declared in their first innings on the third day of the four-day West Zone Duleep Trophy match at the Lalbhai Contractor stadium in Surat on Saturday.

South resumed at their overnight score of 296 for two and added 299 runs before declaring immediately after the tea break. They have a first innings lead of 219 runs.

West, in their second innings, lost Connor Williams at 43, when Sriram caught him in second slip off Ashish Kapoor's bowling in the last over of the day. He faced 68 balls and hat six boundaries.

The other opener, skipper Nayan Mongia was not out on 21 when stumps were drawn for the day.

The third wicket partnership of 409 runs between Laxman and Dravid became a new record for any wicket in the history of the Duleep trophy.
