Flower named players' "player of the year"

Former Zimbabwe captain Andy Flower has been named the international player of the year by his peers.

Flower, a batsman-wicketkeeper with a test batting average of 51.42, was voted the top player by the Federation of International Cricketers Association (FICA), in conjunction with PricewaterhouseCoopers.

Andy Flower Flower was one of seven nominees for the award along with fast bowlers Glenn McGrath, Shaun Pollock and Darren Gough, batsmen Inzamam-ul-Haq and Sachin Tendulkar and off-spinner Muttiah Muralitharan.

"Andy Flower is a deserving and very popular winner," said former England captain Ted Dexter, making the award.

"Not only has he scored a mass of runs in the last year, but the panel noted the extra burdens he has carried of playing for one of the weaker test teams and also having to keep wicket."

Pakistan all-rounder Abdur Razzaq was named young international player of the year and the Australian test side were voted the team of the year.

Previous winners of the main award include McGrath, Tendulkar, Brian Lara and Steve Waugh.
